Matt Wieters C

Gonzalez has never faced the Yankees

TIME/TV: 7:05 p.m., YES Network

WEATHER: Temperatures in the 70s. After a few days in Missouri, it feels much, much colder.

UMPIRES: HP Ron Kulpa, 1B Derryl Cousins, 2B Alan Porter, 3B Jim Wolf

TEX MESSAGE: Mark Teixeira is hitting .316 with 16 runs, five doubles, a triple, seven homers and 27 RBI in his past 22 games. His 27 RBI are the most in the Majors this month, and his second-most in a single month since coming to the Yankees.

STANDARD FIRST-TIME-STARTER NOTE: The Yankees will face RHP Miguel Gonzalez for the first time tonight. According to Elias, the Yankees are 27-13 over the last two years (2011-12) in games in which they are opposed by a starting pitcher who they were facing for the first time. That includes a 10-8 mark this season. The Yankees?won their last such game after four consecutive losses in such games.

ON THIS DATE: On July 30, 1890, Casey Stengel was born in Kansas City. Stengel managed the Yankees for 12 seasons and won seven World Series.

UPDATE, 7:36 p.m.: There’s a two-out single by Ibanez, first hit of the day for the Yankees.

UPDATE, 7:40 p.m.: RBI single by starting third baseman Eric Chavez, and it’s now a 1-0 Yankees lead in the second.

UPDATE, 7:44 p.m.: Orioles get that run right back on Betemit’s homer in the third. It’s 1-1.

UPDATE, 8:13 p.m.: Cano hit one hard, but it’s an out and the Yankees are held scoreless in the fourth. It’s still 1-1.

UPDATE, 8:21 p.m.: Sac fly. Another sac fly. And now it’s 3-1 Orioles.

UPDATE, 8:33 p.m.: Ibanez’s 14th homer of the year has made this a one-run game. He’s been pretty much exactly what the Yankees thought he would be. He hits for power, which is enough to have an impact despite the low average and OBP.

UPDATE, 9:21 p.m.: Chavez’s ninth homer of the season might have carried more weight had the Orioles not pulled away with two more runs in the top of the seventh. Instead of tying the game, Chavez’s homer simply pulls the Yankees within 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh.

UPDATE, 9:25 p.m.: Ichiro’s first homer as a Yankee is the 100th of his career, and it’s pulled the Yankees within 5-4.

UPDATE, 9:32 p.m.: Teixeira is out of the game after that diving play in the seventh. No word on an injury.

    Hi jackamir! I’l be in and out tonight because my allergies have gotten the best of me.

    I expect a Yankee win and a Tiger win.

    O’s have some nice offense by the way.

    :)

    go Yanks…

  5. DONNYBROOK July 30th, 2012 at 7:11 pm

    No way I deal a promising, young SP\Phelps, for a middle -of-the-road 3B\Headley, who has reached his ceiling. These kinda knee-jerk deadline deals are vintage 80′s George worthy.

  6. astrocityfan July 30th, 2012 at 7:12 pm

    Go yanks! I won’t be able to watch the game tonight so I’ll be getting my updates here ! So let’s keep this space positive and informative :)
    Time to start another win streak!

  7. luis July 30th, 2012 at 7:13 pm

    Go Yankees!!

    blake,

    I meant that Headley solves some problems with the O. I agree we have a problem there. I just think that if their plan is to survive with pitching for the next two or three seasons, Phelps is very important then

  8. jackamir July 30th, 2012 at 7:14 pm

    Trisha, I hope you feel better. We need you here!!!!

  9. tomingeorgia July 30th, 2012 at 7:15 pm

    Hello, All,
    Go, boys!
    And I hope GB7 shows up with an explanation.

  10. Jerkface July 30th, 2012 at 7:16 pm

    No way I deal a promising, young SP\Phelps, for a middle -of-the-road 3B\Headley, who has reached his ceiling. These kinda knee-jerk deadline deals are vintage 80?s George worthy.

    Headley is a better third baseman than anyone we have in our system or on our roster defensively and is an .800 OPS bat away from Petco. Would swap for Phelps with ease, as Phelps is being wasted in long relief and not being given the innings he needs to be penciled in for a rotation spot next year.

  11. Tyler July 30th, 2012 at 7:16 pm

    I’m not quite sure that Headley has reached his ceiling but it would be tough to part with Phelps. The thing is that Phelps wasn’t even that valued on here at this time last year… I kind of wonder how hard it would be to replace him. But i do really like the guy.

  12. blake July 30th, 2012 at 7:16 pm

    Nice work Freddy!

    Luis,

    Again part of the reason I like Headley is cause I think he could help facilitate a J. Upton deal this winter…..now obviously you dont trade for a guy just because he MIGHT help you trade for somebody else later…….but its a potential nice perk.

  13. blake July 30th, 2012 at 7:18 pm

    “I kind of wonder how hard it would be to replace him. But i do really like the guy.$

    If they arent gonna ever put him in the rotation…..pretty easy.

  14. Tyler July 30th, 2012 at 7:18 pm

    1-0 Detroit… I guess that season-defining win the Sox had last night according to Francona and Hersheiser hasn’t kicked in yet.

  15. kd July 30th, 2012 at 7:19 pm

    bucholtz getting smoked

  16. Tyler July 30th, 2012 at 7:19 pm

    blake-

    You would think he would get in the rotation eventually but I think the Yanks like him as a guy who can go multiple innings out of the ‘pen. He’s kind of in an Aceves type role when he was a Yank. I think it’s kind of a waste for him since he’s not getting innings but the Yanks always love those kind of guys.

  17. jr1212 July 30th, 2012 at 7:20 pm

    I dont want to bring down Phelps in any way but I see him as a mid or back end rotation type. If you can get Headley for Phelps without much else, I think its a no brainer. Headley provides some options for next year

    JS,

    Why wouldn’t you?

    Phelps keeps looking better and better. While Nova and Hughes may have more upside, I’d say right now I like watching Phelps pitch more than both of them. I’ve bumped him from 5th starter to 3-5. He could be in the rotation for 5+ years. I’m not trading that guy for a guy that isn’t really needed.

  19. blake July 30th, 2012 at 7:22 pm

    “I’ve bumped him from 5th starter to 3-5. He could be in the rotation for 5+ years. ”

    Not sure how we can make any determination on what kind of big leagie starter he will be until he is actually a big league starter.

  20. theREALkevin July 30th, 2012 at 7:25 pm

    Offense needs to wake up

  21. luis July 30th, 2012 at 7:25 pm

    Regardless of our position on Headley, we all agree in that Phelps is being wasted in that multi-inning role they have put him in..

    serves the purpose for now.

  24. jacksquat July 30th, 2012 at 7:27 pm

    Well we know Phelps has and can start (extensively in the minors), we’ve seen how he can pitch in the majors, he is just (mistakenly) not being used as a starter at this time. But I don’t see how they could ignore him next year, at the latest.

    Yea pretty much…..i understand why they are doing it…..i just dont really like it.

  26. jacksquat July 30th, 2012 at 7:28 pm

    Phelps isn’t being wasted, just partially wasted. He’s useful there but would be more useful starting, especially when Joba comes back.

  27. RSM July 30th, 2012 at 7:28 pm

    Nice play by Cano.

    Stone burner,

    Saying Montero will be an all star is called a prediction. Its what major league front offices do on a daily basis. They forecast players. Wtf are u talking about.

  30. DONNYBROOK July 30th, 2012 at 7:30 pm

    Phelps will get a shot at being a SP whether it’s with the Yanks or elsewhere.

    :)

  32. luis July 30th, 2012 at 7:34 pm

    JS,

    He is…If they keep this up, he won’t reach the 150 innings plateau for the second year in a row…You put him in the rotation next season, and you may risk another “2011 Hughes season” after next season…He needs to build his innings, especially since you are getting back Joba very soon and Aardsma shouldn’t be that far behind…

  33. luis July 30th, 2012 at 7:35 pm

    Mick and Trish…Yeah I know, my bad…

    Kevin,

    Don’t mind that guy

  34. Jerkface July 30th, 2012 at 7:35 pm

    Phelps has to get 90 innings just to be within spitting distance of the 180 Nova had the year before he joined the rotation.

  35. DONNYBROOK July 30th, 2012 at 7:36 pm

    Swish turning into a Big “guess” hitter. He’s deciding to swing Before the pitcher even throws the ball.

  36. Benny Blanco July 30th, 2012 at 7:36 pm

    Is it me or does Swisher get called out on more K’s looking than any other player in the yankee lineup?

  37. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 30th, 2012 at 7:36 pm

    Let him play winter ball.

  38. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 30th, 2012 at 7:36 pm

    Can’t speak highly enough about Ibanez.

  39. Tyler July 30th, 2012 at 7:39 pm

    Swisher is just what the Yanks need: another streaky, guess hitter.

  40. luis July 30th, 2012 at 7:39 pm

    He has nothing to learn from winter ball…Just increase his innings with very little rest to the arm before ST, again risking either injury or dead arm

  41. Jerkface July 30th, 2012 at 7:39 pm

    Let him play winter ball.

    He will have to pitch 30-40 more innings this year just to be able to get within 130 with Winter League.

  42. luis July 30th, 2012 at 7:40 pm

    Chavy!!

  43. theREALkevin July 30th, 2012 at 7:41 pm

    Luis,

    What’s up man? About what you said, you’re probably right….

    Go chaveZ!!

  44. luis July 30th, 2012 at 7:41 pm

    JF,

    They need to build his innings this season…Waiting for winter ball is asking for trouble..he needs to start either here or down in the minors

  45. emorales July 30th, 2012 at 7:42 pm

    The balk costs them. Keep it up, Yankees!

  46. luis July 30th, 2012 at 7:44 pm

  53. luis July 30th, 2012 at 7:48 pm

    Tyler,

    Read your post on the previous thread…I was just trying to figure out a move that would give us a player we may need without giving up big time talent.

    Very opportune DP

  54. theREALkevin July 30th, 2012 at 7:48 pm

    Luis,

    Glad to hear youre doing well. Yeah ive been pretty busy, but I’ll probably be on more as the Yanks get closer to the playoffs. I can’t wait for October!!

  55. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 30th, 2012 at 7:49 pm

    I don’t believe anyone here has seen Phelps pitch as much as 5 (in a row) major league innings. Perhaps I’m wrong. At this point in time he is needed much more in relief than as a starter. He’s invaluable in relief, in a bullpen that has gotten a bit shaky. Garcia doesn’t have the pen versatility that Phelps has. If Freddy goes south, you might get a chance to see it. On top of it, if he does get into the rotation, you’re not looking at more than several go-rounds until Andy gets back. Please don’t even attempt to sell that Phelps will take either Nova or Hughes’s place. And he would definitely be part of September call ups, so he won’t be getting stretched out then either.

    If Wade hadn’t lost his touch, I think Phelps would be starting in AAA. Maybe things change with Joba coming back.

    JMO

  56. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 30th, 2012 at 7:50 pm

    “The Yanks should put some runs on the board…Garcia is not going to keep the game here”

    I’m not so sure about that.

  57. theREALkevin July 30th, 2012 at 7:52 pm

    I like phelps. In my opinion he coUld be like a poor mans Mike Mussina. Hopefully he gets the chance to start for an MLB team sometime soon

  58. Jerkface July 30th, 2012 at 7:52 pm

    At this point in time he is needed much more in relief than as a starter.

    Pitching low leverage innings in relief is not the role ‘next starting pitching prospect in line’ should be covering. Freddy was doing his best work out of the pen this season, so how does he lack the versatility?

    If Phelps got called up in September, he would make some spot starts, like the Yankees do EVERY september, and he wouldn’t be called up until the AAA season+playoffs were finished. So non-argument there.

  59. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 30th, 2012 at 7:52 pm

    Not saying you’re wrong luis. But I don’t know that you’re right either (about Freddy not holding the game). Didn’t he retire something like 11 players in a row last game, after giving up some runs – not sure of how many.

  60. jacksquat July 30th, 2012 at 7:53 pm

    Luis, I agree he should be getting innings, I just meant he is not being totally wasted as he is at least pitching some important innings.

    But even if he doesn’t get enough innings this year, I wouldn’t be too worried about him being a starter next year. He has reached 150+ innings in the minors twice, even though it was 2009/10. He will turn 26 October 9, so he should be relatively safe now from major injuries. And as the 5th starter he could be skipped several times.

  61. luis July 30th, 2012 at 7:54 pm

    JF,

    Spot on…Thank you very well expressed

  62. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 30th, 2012 at 7:56 pm

    “If Phelps got called up in September, he would make some spot starts, like the Yankees do EVERY september, and he wouldn’t be called up until the AAA season+playoffs were finished. So non-argument there.”

    I don’t remember call ups getting spot starts every September. In fact I rememeber them getting innings toward the end of the season after Yankee starters pitch a few innings. At the very end of the season.

    It’s good to be flexible and understand that everything can’t be your way just because you want it a certain way. The Yankees are taking care of now. If circumstances change, then they do.

  63. jackamir July 30th, 2012 at 7:56 pm

    I was really hoping that Ichiro would show me a resurgence but he has not driven one ball since he was inserted into the lineup. Its early but my feeling is that he is toast.

  64. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 30th, 2012 at 7:57 pm

    “But even if he doesn’t get enough innings this year, I wouldn’t be too worried about him being a starter next year. He has reached 150+ innings in the minors twice, even though it was 2009/10. Extremely astute jacksquat.

  65. luis July 30th, 2012 at 7:57 pm

    Trisha,

    Against a very feeble offensive team…That’s what i meant when I said that that West Coast trip would be deceiving, leading people to think that Garcia was good enough for the job…Even if he can do the job, he has no future on the team…I rather give those innings to Phelps and invest in the future that he brings….

  66. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 30th, 2012 at 7:59 pm

    “Freddy was doing his best work out of the pen this season, so how does he lack the versatility”

    You apparently don’t know enough about Freddy if you’re maintaining this. Either that or the definition of versatility.

  67. GregD July 30th, 2012 at 7:59 pm

    I don’t think Phelps is pitching low leverage innings……he has pitched well in the Corey Wade role

  68. theREALkevin July 30th, 2012 at 7:59 pm

    Offense is terrible right now. It feels like Granderson strikes out every other at bat. What a waste when u consider his speed

  69. Jerkface July 30th, 2012 at 8:00 pm

    I don’t remember call ups getting spot starts every September

    Noesi, Nova, Aceves & Kennedy all got spot starts in September. So the Yankees can rest their playoff starters and line them up for the postseason.

  72. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 30th, 2012 at 8:02 pm

    Freddy is a pro luis. Phelps is an unknown as a major league starter. I don’t make that switch right now. Phelps belongs in the pen. You have to just be prepared for whatever changes come and go with them. I understand and respect your postion but I don’t agree with it.

    I’m from the “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it” school of thought. If it breaks, well you look at it then.

    :)

    Anyway, GO CHIEF!!!

  73. Jerkface July 30th, 2012 at 8:02 pm

    You apparently don’t know enough about Freddy if you’re maintaining this. Either that or the definition of versatility.

    What do I not know about him? He pitched 17.1 IP out of the pen this year including multiple innings of relief 7 out of 10 appearances with a 1.56 ERA. The original argument against Garcia in the pen was that he didn’t warm up quick enough, but the Yankees managed to make that work just fine because he relieved during their dominant run.

    He can pitch 1 inning or multiple innings. Is that not the definition of versatility out of the pen? What is Phelps doing that is any different?

  74. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 30th, 2012 at 8:04 pm

    Looks like stealth Cashman is up to good – if Heyman is to be believed.

  75. GregD July 30th, 2012 at 8:05 pm

    Garcia reminds of David Wells in his later years….he would give up two hits an inning with a double play mixed in

  76. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 30th, 2012 at 8:06 pm

    Grrr! Tigers just had the bases loaded, one out, and someone hit into a DP. However, they tied the score.

  78. GregD July 30th, 2012 at 8:08 pm

    How are they lucky, luis? Freddy apparently induced them!

  84. Jerkface July 30th, 2012 at 8:10 pm

    Noesi was in a better situation (only 1 season removed from his career high in innings) than Phelps will be in and the Yankees flat out said in the winter they didnt see him as a starter prospect this season because he needed to get innings. They admit to handling him in not the best manner. Now they are doing the same to Phelps.

  85. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 30th, 2012 at 8:10 pm

    He has done both very well…Usually good SP make outanding RP…This is not about this season, it’s about next and many seasons after that one…Garcia was doing fine in the BP as well, with one slight difference, he has no future with the team.

    He has done both very well…Usually good SP make outanding RP…This is not about this season, it’s about next and many seasons after that one…Garcia was doing fine in the BP as well, with one slight difference, he has no future with the team.

    —————————————–

    good point………I would think that if Garcia starts to falter several starts in a row….Phelps will be in there……another point……in the playoffs, Phelps and Garcia will both be in the pen

  93. Jerkface July 30th, 2012 at 8:15 pm

    Because of the position they found themselves in.

    But a team doesn’t have to specifically pitch Phelps in those situations. Phelps has pitched in 4 games, all where the Yankees were trailing excepting 1 extra inning game. They also lost all but 1! So why derail the development of a great looking starter prospect for this?

    The team should not keep cutting off its nose to spite the face despite constantly hovering a pair of scissors over it. They could just not make the cut :)

  98. Othello July 30th, 2012 at 8:17 pm

    I am shocked how easy it is for a pitcher with a plan can come in and really shutdown Yankees hitters.

  99. GoldGlove9486 July 30th, 2012 at 8:18 pm

    I don’t think there’s right or wrong. I couldn’t do it but it doesn’t mean that it’s wrong for you to do it. At least you’re doing it for the right reasons, believing we’d be better off with Phelps in the rotation.

    If we can say at any point in time “Gardner would have had that” or “Ichiro would have had that if he were playing LF” or “Jones has definitely lost a few steps – he should have had that” – and those times lead to runs, how fair is it to hold it against the pitcher? I’d say not too fair. It counts of course, but so does looking at things fairly.

  140. Tabbert July 30th, 2012 at 8:30 pm

    luis – I am playing devil’s advocate but I really want you to answer this question. How do you know that Phelps is going to work out in the rotation? How? It’s merely a guess on your part, correct? I mean other sure bets turned out to be duds – see Shane Spencer.

    Not everyone here is quite as high on Phelps. I’m not talking me because I have seen his stuff is pretty much untouchable. But I have seen others who have called him nothing more than a back-of-the-rotation starter and some who have said he wouldn’t even crack the rotation. You haven’t seen him as a member of the rotation on a continual basis – the only way you can really begin to assess whether or not he’ll be any good.

    Just sayin.

    I agree that Phelps has a future with the team. I dont agree that your wasting Phelps in the bullpen. I actually think him being in the bullpen benefited him. Tabbert, I understand what you’re saying. But you have to admit that Oakland was its own horror show based on how they’ve been playing. We just got them at a bad time. And they were all one-run losses. I don’t remember exactly which game it was but we had the bad fortune to lose Arod in there sometime, at a time when he was swinging an incredibly hot bat.

    Because of the ebb and flow of a season, it doesn’t pay to ever get too high or too low, especially if you are sitting with the belief that the Yanks are destined for bigger and better things to come. I guess that’s why I just enjoy the season and don’t really bother taking games apart. This team is too good not to win. I expect they have a chance to win every game. When they don’t, oh well. We know that statistically it’s going to happen.

    That’s how I rock and roll.

  185. AndyFTM July 30th, 2012 at 8:52 pm

    Just like in Oakland last week the problem is that we have 0 walks this game. Yes pitchers can come in and pound the zone but these are very accomplished hitters who have gotta do better.

  186. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 30th, 2012 at 8:52 pm

    “I would like to see Ichiro become a Yankee tonight.”

    I do believe it’s a matter of time mick. I know we all want him to become the Ichiro of old, but all players typically take time to adjust to playing for the Yanks. Some take longer than others. I think he’s trying to do too much to prove himself and it’s working against him. When he relaxes, such as when the Yanks go on another tear, coming soon, we’ll probably see more Ichircoesque hitting.

  187. DONNYBROOK July 30th, 2012 at 8:53 pm

    With A-Rod outta the order, I would put a bunter in the 2 hole, (Martin or Stewart), and drop Grandy into the 3 Slot. Girardi continues waiting on a homer for runs.

    =========================

    To be honest…I think they screw up big time with Hughes…Being in the BP was one of the reasons that he is still learning 5 years after his debut…He is becoming what he should have been already by 2009, if he hadn’t been rushed the way he was in 2007… I have been saying that Phelps is ready since ST, he has done nothing but succeed no matter where they have placed him…The only time he struggled a bit was when he wasn’t working regularly…A better example would have been Nova, he was called up after he had a certain amount of innings, so the BP work wouldn’t screw his progression innings wise…If Pehlps doesn’t get his innings he may not be ready to take a spot in the rotation next season or we could risk another “dead arm season”, like Hughes experienced after 2010 for the jump in innings.

  191. mick July 30th, 2012 at 8:53 pm

  196. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 30th, 2012 at 8:55 pm

    I’ll say this before I go. This is a schizophrenic forum sometimes. Sometimes people crab about situational hitting and the Yankees not playing small ball, and then when someone goes to bunt, you crab that they should have hit.

    Bunts are extremely important in getting runners over. We should do more of it.

Then, everyone will start talking about how we will be really good in the playoffs once we get arod back. Sound familiar? That’s all we heard last season. Fast Forward to the ALDS… he did jack squat. Yankee team less able to advance a runner than these guys. And
    there’s some really bad teams in that span (Jerry Kenney, anyone?).
    Yes, these guys mash the ball like few others, but, given their talent,
    this may be the most frustrated I’ve ever been. I find myself not
    able to watch them on TV because I get so angry. This has never
    happened before. And remember, the early 70′s Yankees and early

    Starting to look average in all facets of the game

  228. Jerkface July 30th, 2012 at 9:06 pm

    Some stats:

    Yankees have a successful SAC bunt 44% of the time. League average 66%. They have 27 attempts which is around where most teams are (~32). So they attempt almost as often but fail much more.

    30% productive out rate. 32% is league average.

    14% of base runners score for them. League average is 15%. They advance a runner from third with less than 2 outs 44% of the time. 53% is league average. They advance a runner from 2nd 52% of the time. League average is 55%.

    So they are below average in anything related to moving runners around.

  229. Tabbert July 30th, 2012 at 9:07 pm

    Mick-

    Actually i would bet a lot of people in here did play baseball. That is why they get so frustrated in this teams lack of ability to move guys over and bring them in. Those are basic fundamentals you learn as a child playing the game. Its amazing just how poor a team with SOO much talent cant be so bad at situational hitting. Now, there are also people on here that get way too high or way too low over one game. Teams will get hot, cold, go on win streaks, losing streaks, and i understand all of that. However.. That does not take away from my frustration towards these guys ability to come through with men on base. You honestly have to try to be this bad at situtational hitting with the kind of talent the yankees have.

  230. NYY fan in NH July 30th, 2012 at 9:07 pm

    8 losses in their last 11 if this game ends the way it is. Getting owned at Yankee Stadium by a guy listed as a relief pitcher. Pretty pathetic. Cashman will just turn a blind eye and say this team will bash it’s way to the WS. He couldn’t be more wrong..

    You cant possibly blame relief pitching for last nights loss or this game. When you only muster 2 runs ( at home, no less) you have about a 2% chance at winning games. This offense needs to step it up.

  235. austinmac July 30th, 2012 at 9:09 pm

    A team that relies solely on home runs will not win in the end. They need balance with hitters who can hit with some power with a good average. It is pretty simple. It’s not happening in the next 24 hours.

    I can’t stand to watch this team when it goes into these slumps, because it’s always the same kind of slump. I’m hesitant to say this, just because of the nature of baseball and how talent isn’t a guarentee of postseason success… but barring injuries, this Angels team is going to win the WS. 4 above average to great starting pitchers, best offense in baseball (and most diverse), and a good back end of the pen.

    They have no weaknesses and are young, athletic, and have great pitching and a great manager. I don’t see how they lose in a 5 or 7 game series to anyone unless they just forget how to play baseball like the 06 Tigers in the WS. They are that good. Probably the best overall team since the 1999 Yankees.

  263. blake July 30th, 2012 at 9:16 pm

  266. blake July 30th, 2012 at 9:18 pm

    not really….their offense is basically 3 hitters….it’s not all that deep….6 teams in the AL have scored more runs than them. I do like their rotation though…..the total package of the Angels will be tough.

  267. Tabbert July 30th, 2012 at 9:19 pm

    Well, its not even that the yankee are losing. I understand that we wont go 162-0 and i don’t get too overly upset when we lose. However, this is worse than losing. We simply aren’t playing good baseball. Its hard to watch Any team, let alone The Yankees, play this bad. Its just very flat baseball.

  268. DONNYBROOK July 30th, 2012 at 9:19 pm

    Cashman is doing his players a disservice if he doesn’t get a big bat in here by tomorrow at 4 PM. This team is not a WS contender at all. Unless Cashman/Hal are just conent making the playoffs and being one and done, he has to make some moves.

    This team reminds me so much of the 2011 Spurs in the NBA, a team that had the best record in the NBA, but no one believed was a title contender, and predictably, they got beaten in the 1st round by an 8 seed.

    The “talent” on our team is vastly overrated – it is all names and depth.

    Totally agree. Just flipped over to the TX/LAA game a few mins ago and saw them score 9 runs in an inning. What a sick offense they have now with Trout and Pujols hitting. Their other hitters are all nice fundamental players. Their top players blow away our top ones though. Curtis “HR/BB/K” Granderson leads the way.

  276. Ken Phelps July 30th, 2012 at 9:22 pm

    Yea I agree. Their offense is only difficult because Trout, Trumbo, and Pujols are all hitting .300 (Pujols hitting .320 and opsing over 1 since May 15) with crazy OPSes and Trout is hard to deal with on the base baths and in the field.

    luis July 6th, 2012 at 3:04 pm
    Shame and Mac,

    I don’t know ultimately how good Montero will be…I do know that he will catch…I do know that probably he will be a force in some lineup….I do know that he is going to bat very well, as Pat M pointed out, the league has adjusted to him…He will adjust to the league as well…As for the predictions, he has the tools to become a very especial player…Will he become one?, only time will tell…I do know that he has the tools, the make up and the drive to do so..

    ********

    Well, sounds like hedging to moi AND a very political safe answer – but let’s go deeper into what Luis is saying.

    He first starts off by qualifying – oh my I don’t know what is going to happen – and then digs right into w/ definitive statements such as:

    Montero will be a force
    Montero will bat very well
    Montero will be a catcher
    Montero will adjust to the league

    Then he goes into Montero has the tools to be a special hitter – so here is backing off of the “will” language – which is less certain – but remember he just went through several sentences of someone who: (1) will catcher, (2) will bat very well, and (3) will be a “force.”

    Then luis goes back to a very safe – qualifying answer – by first posing it as a question – “Will he become one?” He answers the question safely – to yet again hedge – “only time will tell.”

    What we call this kind of answer is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-Hb3CRQVQ8

    (emphasis for title only – not content of actual debate)

    Newsflash: A player that is a force, that will hit very well, and can catch – that is a frick’in hall of famer – - – -

    (note: I did not want to participate in this tonight – I tried – but the one thing I do not like is ambiguous, safe wax poetics – either come out and wax the poetics or not – don’t play it safe like the above comment)

    Even Ichiro has caught the HR Bug. Really Not his game.

    ~~~~~~~~~
    No, but he’s smart and that ball was served up.
    I can’t believe anyone really thinks we’re missing a “heart of the order” batter in Arod. Not this season, folks. He’s nowhere near that label.
  302. TheStraw July 30th, 2012 at 9:26 pm
    Why do people persist in posting SJ’s tweets? He is overly reactionary and his predictions are seldom right.
  303. austinmac July 30th, 2012 at 9:27 pm
    Haren has not pitched well this year and that may be why Greinke was necessary for them.
  304. sunny615 July 30th, 2012 at 9:27 pm
    Homerun happy offense. Still has difficulty manufacturing runs.
  305. Tabbert July 30th, 2012 at 9:28 pm
    The Rangers don’t scare me as much as they use to. They have no ACE, and hamilton is a wreck. Their lineup is in a major funk… but their problem is pitching. Darvish and oswalt are their two best starters. Not very scary.
    The angels have great pitching, but their offense is not great outside of the big 3. I think they are scary… but i think we have a better lineup, bullpen, bench, closer, and pretty equal pitching staffs.
    The team that has the most potential to be scary again, is the tigers. If they get Vmart back, young heats up, with the additions of infante… they have a damn good lineup. Not to mention Verlander, Fister, Sanchez, will be no day at the beach.
    Montero will be a force when and if he can lay off breaking balls far off the plate from right handers. Some do, some don’t. See Soriano for one of those who don’t. No doubt he has the hands and strength to be a great success. Time will tell.
    I heard everything in the car and literally started crying when Ichirco hit his homer. I can’t believe I missed the moment he became a Yankee. And I don’t get YES reruns, so I won’t be able to see it. I heard he got a standing ovation.
    I am really sad that I missed that. I’ve been high as a kite since we got him and just knew he was going to be huge for us at some point. I so wanted to see his first defining offensive moment as a Yankee. I’ll still sniffing thinking about it.
    If phelps is in, leave I’m in. He’s not coming back tomorrow. He’s effective, let it go.
    Phelps has been used every 3 days since coming back to the team for around 30-40 pitches.
  401. UnKnown July 30th, 2012 at 9:59 pm
    I am sure the Marlins and Dodgers must have been far down the road on the trade because it literally went down about 2 hours after it was said that Alex had this injury to his hand.
    Hanley would’ve been sweet to have in the Bronx. But again at what cost. It doesn’t seem like the Dodgers gave up that much so who knows.
  402. RSM July 30th, 2012 at 9:59 pm
  404. Curt aint worth a Schilling July 30th, 2012 at 9:59 pm
    What happened on that throw by Cano? He couldve used footwork to step away from the 2B bag and gun it to 1st. But nope. Not for our dear Robbie, who apparently cant be criticized because he’s the most talented player on the Yankees.
  405. blake July 30th, 2012 at 10:00 pm
    “Dodgers ate Hanley’s contract. The Yanks would Not have done that.”
    the AAV is only like 11 million on his deal…..if he plays like he can that’s a bargain.
  406. Captain Clutch July 30th, 2012 at 10:00 pm
    Cano has to get his head back in the game. Now he is starting to take his bad offense into the field. He is a great player but he has to give 100% everyday like Jeter, Arod and Tex do.
  407. Tabbert July 30th, 2012 at 10:00 pm
    Weird seeing Quintanilla playing for the orioles and the mets. Remember watching him play his college ball here at Texas.
    Rapada DFa for Joba
  409. Bret The Hitman July 30th, 2012 at 10:01 pm
    Despite the fact that we need a baserunner, I can guarantee Swisher will be swinging for the fences and setting the tone for Ibanez and Chavez, leaving one less out to work with for his fellow teammates who he obviously respects and trusts (sarcasm).
  410. J. Alfred Prufrock July 30th, 2012 at 10:01 pm
    For anyone who cares about watching prospects, Gerrit Cole is pitching in Trenton tomorrow opposite Brett Marshall.
    Now, that is must see, 15 minutes away. Wednesday is Dealin’ Dellin, coming off one of two of his best starts of 2012. Was great fun to see Wang pitch at Trenton on Saturday and then see bionic Joba throw gas a day later. This has been a week of fascinating pitching down here!
    Yankeefem – you going out to Waterfront tomorrow to see that Benedict Arnold? :mad:
  438. Curt aint worth a Schilling July 30th, 2012 at 10:06 pm
    What a completely wasted at bat. I dont believe it. He didnt have the understanding to get the runner over the 3rd no matter what. He struck out on complete slop.
  439. AZ88 July 30th, 2012 at 10:06 pm
    As usual, Raul with a strikeout in a big spot.
  440. Carlo July 30th, 2012 at 10:06 pm
    In 4 months this team has made more unproductive outs than any team I have ever watched play a season. Horrible.
  441. Captain Clutch July 30th, 2012 at 10:07 pm
    That was a terrible at bat for Ibanez. 3 of those pitches weren’t strikes that he swung at. Of course every other team in baseball grounds the ball to the rigth side very easy. But the Yanks can NEVER do it.
  442. UnKnown July 30th, 2012 at 10:07 pm
    Chavez has been hot tonight. I like this matchup
  443. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 30th, 2012 at 10:07 pm
    “Some people want Cano to display the same effort as Pedroia. Nobody here wants Pedroia.”
    Cano has more natural talent than Pedroia. Therefore Pedroia has to look like the bouncing everyready bunny to accomplish what Cano accomplishes almost with his eyes shut.
  444. DONNYBROOK July 30th, 2012 at 10:07 pm
    He is keeping the ball down. Gotta find a hole.
  445. blake July 30th, 2012 at 10:08 pm
    base hit Ichiro…come on
  446. Captain Clutch July 30th, 2012 at 10:08 pm
    The problem is all of these guys are looking for a homerun here instead of just getting the guy over and in. The approach is terrible. These guys have no idea how to situational hit.
  447. DONNYBROOK July 30th, 2012 at 10:08 pm
    Down and away seems to be the plan.
  448. jr1212 July 30th, 2012 at 10:08 pm
    So because Pedroia dives once in a while and swings out of shoes he gives more effort than Cano… You dont know how much effort any ballplayer puts into the game unless you there when they prepare for the season, game or every at bat.
  449. Curt aint worth a Schilling July 30th, 2012 at 10:08 pm
    trisha, it doesnt take much to hustle out of the batters box and hustle all the way down the 1B line.
    Can you imagine?????
    I have goosebumps thinking about it!!!!
  451. AZ88 July 30th, 2012 at 10:08 pm
    A walk does nothing for us there, with a singles hitter up and the DP now set up for the Orioles. Chavez should have swung
    Atta boy, Chavy. Good AB here, Ichi!
  453. UnKnown July 30th, 2012 at 10:09 pm
    I am very surprised that Girardi isn’t bunting here
    ———
    Right or wrong. Girardi would never have Raul bat there. There isn’t many people in this lineup that would’ve bunted there.
    Come on Ichiro. Make this be your night.
  454. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 30th, 2012 at 10:09 pm
    Imagine if Russell could be our hero…
  455. yankeefeminista July 30th, 2012 at 10:09 pm
  456. RSM July 30th, 2012 at 10:09 pm
    They’ve shown that Japanese photographer more than Ichiro himself.
  457. Captain Clutch July 30th, 2012 at 10:10 pm
    That was a bad pitch to swing at. This would be another bad loss.
  458. RS July 30th, 2012 at 10:10 pm
    Russell Martin has probably been our best late inning clutch hitter…
  459. Curt aint worth a Schilling July 30th, 2012 at 10:10 pm
    Nobody gave either of those as an example.
  462. AZ88 July 30th, 2012 at 10:10 pm
    Pat m, I want you to answer my question. Is that slash line good? Why do you think it is good? Tex is a good glove and very good against lefties, no one has said otherwise. Why do you think his performance against righties is good?
    And jeter is a platoon hitter, how is he not? Do you not understand that they make way less outs vs lefties than righties? The Mark Teixeira of the last 3 seasons is not a 23 million dollar player. Jeter is performing like I said he would, crushing lefties and being below league average against righties.
    You seem to think criticizing Teixeira for being poor against righties = complete demonization of the player.
    To put it into context. Vs righties the past 3 years he is hitting 120 points below his career OPS. Pat M I want you to visualize that number gap in OPS. Its the difference between 2009 Jeter and 2008 Jeter. Do you not think 2009 Jeter was better? Whats going on here?
  464. GoldGlove9486 July 30th, 2012 at 10:10 pm
    Another devastating game. Pretty sickening.
  465. Captain Clutch July 30th, 2012 at 10:11 pm
  473. blake July 30th, 2012 at 10:12 pm
    The Ibanez AB was a killer….you have to put the ball in play there.
  474. Captain Clutch July 30th, 2012 at 10:12 pm
  475. Curt aint worth a Schilling July 30th, 2012 at 10:12 pm
  479. mick July 30th, 2012 at 10:13 pm
    “That’s a shame.”
    Tomorrow’s another day…
  480. UnKnown July 30th, 2012 at 10:13 pm
    So if Martin gets a hit there no way Chad posts that quickly. He would have to write up a new post and the game would be over. I would’ve much rather seen that.
  481. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 30th, 2012 at 10:13 pm
    Once again they battled back. What we need of course is for them not to have to battle back.
    We need DeWayne Wise back up here until Swisher is ready to take the field. Did he accept the AAA assignment, does anyone know?
  482. Jerkface July 30th, 2012 at 10:13 pm
    Jeter’s 5th in BA vs. righties in mlb and 5th in OPS in AL vs. righties. For SS’s.
    9th in wRC, 11th in OPS vs righties out of all SS. But his performance against other SS’s isn’t in question. Its where he should be in the lineup vs righties for the Yankees. When they had Brett Gardner, who succeeded at a higher level vs righties he should have been moved down.
    Thats obviously not really an option anymore.
  483. J. Alfred Prufrock July 30th, 2012 at 10:14 pm
    If Tex is hurt for a period of time Cash will have to do something….cant keep running out Nix, Chavez, Jones and Ibanez in regular lineup….this was supposed to be the bench. With the C position in terrible shape and Grandy man all or nothing this lineup needs help.
    3 bad losses in a row at home after a 2-5 road trip…not good.
