Right before I walked into the stadium I was told the Yankees have checked in on Ryan Dempster, but they dont expect to trade for him. The Yankees believe he is more likely going to the Dodgers, and one source indicates that the Yankees suspect they are being used as nothing more than leverage for the Cubs to get more in the deal.
Trade deadline is still a few minutes away. Here is the Yankees lineup for the day. No one unexpected listed on the lineup card.

I’ll say it again – this might be the dumbest lineup Girardi has ever put together.
You have two sluggers out so yes, by all means bat your second best power hitter in the 2 spot and the guy coming off a groin injury cleanup. And put another power option on the bench entirely.

The paperwork just has to be turned in to the commish office by 4, so trades can still go down after 4 PM and junk.

I agree about the lineup. Ichiro should be batting leadoff, moving everyone down one slot.

Ichiro should not be batting leadoff. His OBP is awful. He doesnt take walks and he obviously doesnt hit like he used to. He’s fine in the bottom 3rd where he can take risks on the bases once he gets on base.

Howard would be a big dump…. but unless he suddenly became a RH hitter capable of playing 3B and/or LF I’m not interested.
I’m okay with Dempster if the price is low and he replaces Garcia in the rotation. That is unquestionably a significant upgrade.

The Pettitte setback must be more significant than we think if they are going after Dempster … maybe they are doing this so they dont get caught with their pants down come September if/when Andy continues to be delayed with coming back and is questionable for the post season.
Unless there is a second move to go wirh it…..blah…..but hey at least we will get to hear some good harry carey impersonatations

Something is up. More than just Dempster, a rental for 58 game, of which he will pitch in 10 at most. Looks like a stealth flip of one of their other starters, perhaps for something big?

I have MLB tv on. I put it on right after 3 and then found that the drop dead was 4. I can tell you what they say and it is that Demster goes to Rangers.
Well, if Dempster went to Texas, the Yankees were played perfectly. What did they give up?
Yankees need impact bats, not another starter. They have about 7.
MLB said more deals will get done and will be made public in the next hour or so.

Yep. Going to take a while to get used to this new way of doing business. No RH stick, no starter, nothing aside from Ichiro.
Oh well, maybe we’ll get hot in October. Wouldn’t count on these old players sustaining a hot streak for 3 weeks, but I guess stranger things have happened.

Disappointing. Who cares if the Rangers gave up a C level prospect instead of a D level one? As if that is some kind of solace. Totally different than driving up the price for Boston on a FA signing

If the Yankees are not in the world series, I will root for any AL team other than Texas (and the Sux).

Not everyone sees him as a shell of himself, and he can cover the outfield and throw to the plate like nobody’s business. That pickup was gold in terms of Yankee needs.
Also, because the Yanks don’t acquire anyone today doesn’t mean they won’t be acquiring someone. The waiver wire is an interesting mechanism.
Dempster for 2 Class A pitchers? Of course, were it the Yankees, they would have asked for 2 AAA pitchers.
I am not worried about dempster to the rangers,and hopefully their farm system took a hit.

What is scary is the fact that we were even in on Dempster at all. That tells you all you need to know how blind Cash is to this teams needs on offense

I really don’t understand some of the people on here.
You are complaining that we looked into and almost got ryan dempster?
At most we would have traded bichette jr. for him. It would have been a nice move by the yanks if they were able to get him for a cheap price. Offense was not attainable this deadline. Teams like the dodgers and giants went after it a lot more.
It also would bulk up our bullpen for the post-season with hughes going to the pen, and possibly nova.
And how can you complain about mcgehee? He fills a current need and we gave up nothing for him.
What were you all really expecting? Once you see who was traded where and for what, it would have been difficult to get a big bat to help this team.
