Teixeira gets cortisone injection

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Jul 31, 2012 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Mark Teixeira has been diagnosed with inflammation in his left wrist and given a cortisone injection. The Yankees say he will be reevaluated in three days.

This morning’s MRI revealed no structural damage in the wrist that began bothering Teixeira on Sunday night and forced him out of last night’s game. He was evaluated by Dr. Christopher Ahmad and Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

So Yankees will probably play with a short bench for 3 days at least before making a call on the DL.

    Figure the lineup will include:

    Ichiro – RF
    Swisher – 1b
    Chavez/Nix – 3b
    Jones/Ibanez – LF/DH

  2. EA July 31st, 2012 at 11:35 am

Remember: Perhaps best prospect traded so far is J. Turner, who is not prospect he was a year ago. Teams very protective of young talent.

I guess the news on Tex is positive.
3 days of inactivity due to the cortisone injection could have been worse!

    Whew!!!!

    Hopefully he’s healing well.

    Merry Trade Deadline Day!!

  5. Nick in SF July 31st, 2012 at 11:37 am

Awesome. So they’ll be shorthanded for the next two games pending Tex’s reevaluation on Friday?

    Sigh.

  6. RayVT July 31st, 2012 at 11:44 am

I think Cargo or Upton in a trade centered around Nova & a MLB RP is very doable.

The NYY bench needs an upgrade over Pena with all the shorthandedness. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a BP guy get sent down to bring up a bat & pena getting swapped for Nunez.

  8. DONNYBROOK July 31st, 2012 at 11:51 am

Cashman should be floating a Nova\Phelps Package for CarGo, and a Hughes\Phelps package for Upton. if Arizona insists on Nova, then they gotta include Bloomquist.

  9. JM July 31st, 2012 at 11:51 am

Glad Tex doesn’t have structural damage but wrist injuries are tricky…Didn’t he have some difficulty swinging the bat in 2009 after suffering a wrist injury and getting a cortisone shot?

No he should not. That kind of trade should be looked at in the offseason, not now

  11. DONNYBROOK July 31st, 2012 at 11:57 am

Yanks just played for a week with 24 guys while Swish mended, and Now they are gonna do the same regarding TEX. Yanks should 15 Day DL TEX, and use that depth Cashman likes to brag about. Playing a man short for Another week, when your playing like garbage is foolish.

  12. blake July 31st, 2012 at 11:58 am

Jack Z is crazy for not shopping Felix in this market.

  13. DONNYBROOK July 31st, 2012 at 11:59 am

You guys assume the same players will be available in the offseason. Not necessarily so in general, and Especially if an astute GM beats you to the punch Today.

  14. blake July 31st, 2012 at 12:00 pm

The report was that Tex should only miss like 3 games…..you dont DL him for 2 weeks if thats the case.

Where did you read/hear that Tex could miss a week of time with the
    wrist injury?

    ___

I didnt. It says 3 days and then re-evaluate. In yankeeland, re-evaluate means extra rest. Swish was supposed to be back friday and then he wasnt until sunday. They never come back right when they are supposed to, so i am assuming 5-7 days. Mark my words.

    AWESOME news!!!

Another example of wasted worry – if you indeed did worry!

Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday. And here’s another thing. Even if it was catastrophic – which thankfully it wasn’t – no amount of worry would have changed that nor changed the Yankees course of action.

So in the words of Bobby Ferrin, don’t worry, be happy!

“I felt they rushed back Alex last year unnecessarily.. I just dont want to see them do it again when we’re kicking off August.”

I think its unwise to count on a lot of production from Alex when he gets back…..hand injuries are tricky and Alex generally takes time to find his timing…..he was a total non factor last year in the playoffs after the injury.

  43. ron July 31st, 2012 at 12:14 pm

The yankees could be hiding a bigger injury til after the deadline.
I doubt it,but it would cost more if tex was really hurt.

We can’t trade away our pitching debth,or deplete the farm system.

Young, cost controlled players are the hottest commodity.
This is why teams are trading for them.
We are not going to dramatically alter the team in a big way anyways.

Catcher is a problem.Infield debth is a problem.
    At least good debth,not pena,nunez.

If tex is not out long,we should be ok,and look at upgrading pitching,3b,c,pen.

Headley would be perfect, and solve a lot of uncertainty.
He is 28 yrs old,and ops around .864 on the road, away from that terrible pitchers park he is in.

    But i’m not giving up nova,hughes,m williams,sanchez,austin,banuelos.

    Maybe phelps,but i hold out,and might not do it,but i’d consider it long,and hard.

Next year, even if phelps is in the rotation, his innings are severely limited.

Bad move to have him in the pen, when garcia was great in the pen,and we’d lose nothing with the switch.

Very true. Neither basketball nor tennis has any place in the Olympics. What I love most about the Games is watching sports like archery, handball and water polo, which I only get to see once every four years. And before anyone says these sports are boring, right now I’m getting a lot more enjoyment than watching the Yanks fail with RISP night after night after night. Now that really is boring.

And, if they were able to land a stud major league bat, who is going to lead the pitching staff of the future? Yes, the M’s have TONS of arms on the farm but, they are just that at the moment – “on the farm”. It’s not like Hultzen, Paxton and Walker are all going to strut to the mound and immediately be successful next season. Maybe one will start the season with the big club in 2013. And, with Ichiro and League (and likely Vargas) gone, it’s not like they are in desperate need of $$$

Speculation is that one or more of Vargs/Millwood/Wilhelmsen will be moved today…

    ===

    In the meantime…
a couple of the flame throwing relievers called up to replace League and Delabar…
    - Carter Capps made his first AAA start last night and struck out 3 of the 4 batters he faced. He posted a 1.26 ERA and struck out 72 in 50IP in AA Jackson.
    - Stephen Pryor coming back from the DL had a brief stint with the big club before his injury, also started in AA Jackson this season and posted 44Ks in 36IP between AA+AAA

I think that the way Cashman is looking at it is that let’s see where Tex is next week – if he’s still hurt you can still make a trade until 8/31 and guys will slip through waivers.

For example, a move very similar to the Ichiro one could be picking up Scott Rolen – veteran guy having a bad year that might turn it around and wouldn’t cost anything to get.

Do the Yankees have the right to want to make a profit as a business, or do you think they should become a mission because Yankee fans deserve as much. The problem here is that Yankees fans were transformed into spoiled, self-entitled brats when George Steinbrenner decided that spending was no object. While many of the other teams struggled because their teams didn’t have the revenues the Yanks did, Yankee fans went merrily on their way wanting more and more.

Well maybe the cash cow isn’t going to be providing cream everytime fans stamp their feet. How much do you think the Yanks are on the hook for, in terms of the cost of the new Stadium? If the stadium costs was in the billions, how much do you think the Yankee organization owes? Do you think their revenues have gone up with an economy that has been in the toilet for about the past 5 years? They definitely haven’t realized what they expected to in terms of ticket revenues.

And now Yankee fans are pouting because teams that never were able to in the past are now putting money into their players and the Yankees, with their team of future HOF players, are sitting pat? Maybe that’s the price you have to pay for all of those care-free free-wheeling years of Yankee spending, while teams of other fans sat enviously while Yankee fans kicked dirt in their faces.

I don’t feel a bit of anyone’s pain that the Yankees aren’t going to be busting the budget anymore. If it happens, get used to it. And maybe you’re going to have to make a painful choice somewhere down the line, if your team isn’t getting all those star players you crave. Maybe you’ll just stop watching altogether or pick another team to root for.

I highly doubt the rockies are trading cargo. He is one of the best players in the league and is signed to a reasonable contract. Down the road, when the contract goes up to 17 and 20 million, perhaps they will move him, but it just makes very little sense now. So let us move on from that trade idea.

The yanks are looking to save money. It is all about 189. So do not expect them to trade pitchers under control like nova that are cheap and effective.

I think they should trade granderson, and cano because of the money it will cost to keep them, unless we can get cano for 5/125,max.

But to not look into upgrading is foolish.
This is why cashman, the gm of the yankees is doing exactly that.

It is hard to upgrade because teams you deal with are trying to do the same thing.
Arod will not be playing 3b,sooner than later.

If we can get headley for a reasonable cost,i’d absolutely love that move.
    Problem is,what is reasonable?

Against, then that’s what we’ll have to go for. By the way, I fully expect the Yankees to go over that $189 mil. if they find the need is there. The guys running the team now, even if they don’t have the same level of passion for winning that George does, were brought up by George. They’re not going to let the team go by the wayside. Maybe George wouldn’t be spending like all get out in this economy either.

    B-I-N-G-O!

When a team starts the season with TWELVE players who have never graced an opening day roster – including SEVEN rookies – it takes patience. It also takes veteran leadership, which they have been sorely lacking … Figgy? gag. Guti? hurt. Miggy? heart and hustle – OK. Ryan? stellar D.

Even though he’s a starting pitcher, Felix is more of a leader than Ichiro ever was. He grew up in this org and is the perfect mentor for the young arms, because, just like you can’t do it with ALL young bats, you can’t do it with ALL young arms.

I understand your attachment to Felix…..but they are doing a disservice to you guys as fans by not at least seeing what they could get for him.

If the Mariners aren’t going to be competitive in the next 2 years then you’re risking losing Felix for nothing and not winning anything anyway. He costs 20 million a year…..if you can get 3 or 4 premium prospects for him and save that money to use elsewhere then it could really point you in the right direction quickly.

The Mariners are loaded with pitching….this is an opportunity to become more well rounded and flexible…..since what they are doing now clearly isn’t working.

  129. JobaTipsHisCap July 31st, 2012 at 1:11 pm

Olympics is all about winning; otherwise they wont mention the medal count once every 5 seconds. And CNN even published fake medal count last night to put US ahead of China though they were tied at 17.
Yes, in the past US could still win behind amateurs; but not now. Say, if they send non-NBA basketball team this time, I don’t think they can win a medal at all.

  132. DaSaint007 July 31st, 2012 at 1:13 pm

A team with Tex, Cano, Jeter and ARod panic? Say it ain’t so.

No, what’s needed are gap-fillers, not superstars.

Ichiro is a gapfiller in LF for the rest of the season, and maybe next season if he so chooses, as there will be questions in LF and RF. That was smart.

Tex is a fixture at 1B, but ARod needs to be DH, so a 3B like Headley would be wise to hold that position for the next 3-4 years.

Joba will be back, and possibly Aardsma in September and if not then in 2013 (as will The Great Mariano). That reinforces the pen. Qualls will be released when necessary, and Eppley and Rapada are also single-season fixes.

The starting rotation is the question area. CC is fine, and Hughes seems to be maturing. Nova also has promise, Andy provides veteran presence, and that fifth spot next year will be held by a rookie.

We’ll be ok, just stay calm everyone.

  133. Triple Short of a Cycle July 31st, 2012 at 1:14 pm

  134. trisha - true pinstriped blue July 31st, 2012 at 1:14 pm

mel, I hear ya. The one-run losses are frustrating, especially when some of them came by way of missed catches, errors in the field, etc. Those are the most frustrating because you know that but-for those non-catches, etc., they could have been wins. Sometimes it’s the price you pay for injured players. Play today, win today. Hope they do it. I hope Swisher’s back in the field soon. In the meantime, maybe they need to bring Wise back up (did he accept the AAA assignment?) Even if he did, I guess that would be kind of low-rent. DFA him and then bring him back up.

  138. Tar July 31st, 2012 at 1:17 pm

    Hey Trisha. :D

First I am perfectly content to go with the team they have.

Having said that, just like its the Yankees right to INCREASE their profit, it is the consumers right to demand more for the increase cost that is being passed along.

We are NOT talking about an entity that is losing money, so therefore they are implementing cost cutting measures. NO we are talking about a highly profitable, money making, cash machine that wants to increase the bottom line. Ok that is their right, it’s also the consumers right to not like it. Ihave no problem with Yankee fans being unhappy that a player that could put them over the top is passed on so Hal and Co. Can horde more profits.

PS I am not advocating the free for all sign every high priced FA out there. I actually don’t like that strategy and would much prefer younger kids getting a chance. But this is the Yankees and there is only one goal at hand.

Tar – we likely disagree on the definition/identity of a player who could put them over the top. And you can see that’s where the consternation begins. There is no universality of thought when it comes to Yankee fans anyway.

So you end up with an amalgam of discontent fans, some suggesting this soluton, some suggesting that solution, at loggerheads about which solution is the solution.

In the wake of all of that I say appreciate and enjoy the team fielded, be thankful that you are a fan of the most successful franchise in the history of the game, and take your lumps if lumps come along the way fans of every team have to do. Understand what goes into a season and enjoy the privilege of watching your team play, win or lose, knowing they are out there giving it their best.
