Yankees and Wigginton?
Over in Philadelphia, Matt Gelb is reporting that it’s still a “distint possibility” that the Yankees could trade for Ty Wigginton before today’s deadline.
If the Yankees make a move for Wigginton, it would be a late and unexpected development. I heard just a few days ago — after the Alex Rodriguez injury — that the Yankees were not at all interested in Wigginton and their pursuit was being overblown. That said, I also know Gelb, and he’s awfully good at this. If he’s reporting that a deal is possible, I’m certain he’s got someone reliable telling him as much.
Wigginton is hitting .230/.300/.366 this season. Jayson Nix is hitting .242/.296/.451 while playing better defense (and more versatile defense). Given Mark Teixeira’s injury, Wigginton’s experience at first base could be a factor here, but even that seems like a reach.
As Joel Sherman points out: There’s also a good chance Wigginton will get through waivers and become a post-deadline possibility. Any conversations between the Yankees and Phillies could be nothing more than getting a feel for what it would take to get Wigginton later, if necessary.

oh God…
I miss George. True, all the prospects would be traded, but at least today would be more fun.
Let’s stop trying to pass Headley off as an OF’er to replace Swish. I like the player, but presently he is a 3B.
It all depends on Wigginton’s price. He Can still hit.
If the Yankees are that desperate for a 1b then call up Branyan or Cust.
Wise refused assignment.
Yankees have to trade,or release him.
I read that Branyan is hurt again. His back problems have resurfaced
Brandon Laird is better
I wouldn’t trade for wigginton because there is no real upgrade.
Nix,chavez are as good,or better.
Headley is a different story.
The yankees will make a move,if it is for a definite upgrade like headley, otherwise they will wait for the waiver wire.

Ken_Rosenthal #Diamondbacks execs meeting behind closed doors at hotel in LA. Reported earlier they want to get elite SP. Now they need to counter LA, SF
Wise did everything asked of him, and he was told to, “Follow the Nunez Brick Road”.
I would like to see Laird.
Tar – we likely disagree on the definition/identity of a player who could put them over the top. And you can see that’s where the consternation begins. There is no universality of thought when it comes to Yankee fans anyway.
So you end up with an amalgam of discontent fans, some suggesting this soluton, some suggesting that solution, at loggerheads about which solution is the solution.
In the wake of all of that I say appreciate and enjoy the team fielded, be thankful that you are a fan of the most successful franchise in the history of the game, and take your lumps if lumps come along the way fans of every team have to do. Understand what goes into a season and enjoy the privilege of watching your team play, win or lose, knowing they are out there giving it their best.
No Ty please. Why????

“It’s not even about getting star players it’s that this team will no longer have an advantage over other teams in the league. Which means they’ll have to be right more than they are wrong.”
Against, then that’s what we’ll have to go for. By the way, I fully expect the Yankees to go over that $189 mil. if they find the need is there. The guys running the team now, even if they don’t have the same level of passion for winning that George does, were brought up by George. They’re not going to let the team go by the wayside. Maybe George wouldn’t be spending like all get out in this economy either.
——————————————–
George would have probably pulled back a little but still spent. He honestly didn’t care about the cost.
True they won’t let it go by the wayside but there more than likely will be some slippage.
I wanted Wiggington three or four years agon, but not now. What for?
Wiggington isn’t any better than what they have and he can’t really play 3B….I don’t see the fit
When you Pay to watch the Yanks, it aint a priviledge.
Wiggington this year won’t help this team at all.
Unless ARod, Chavy, Nix, Pena, Nunez and Laird were all injured, there is no need for this guy.
I don’t care if he can play 1st. NO THANKS!!
“Let’s stop trying to pass Headley off as an OF’er to replace Swish. I like the player, but presently he is a 3B.”

ron – thanks for the info.
Can’t say as I much blame him. Those are the things that really bother me, even though it is a business. He was doing well for them in AAA, and he did well for them in the Bronx – but I guess they were out of choices.
How long do they have to either trade or release him, do you know?
JonHeymanCBS
hear pence will be 3 for 1. fine young catcher tommy joseph & OF nate schierholtz r in deal. a pitcher may go to philly 2
Once upon a time Wiggy was a good bench piece. But not now.
He’s one of those that would kill the Yankees. Before AND after a trade to NY.
“When you Pay to watch the Yanks, it aint a priviledge.”
I always thought it was, even when I paid a king’s ransom to go to the new Stadium on first Opening Day and watch the Yanks getting resoundingly beat!
But I march to the tune of a different drummer anyway.
George woulda, (1) looked back at the Yankees exit in RD 1 last season, (2) realized the Yanks do NOT have to hit the $189 Mill till 2014, and said, (3) “Damn the torpedoes, and Full-Speed-Ahead”.
Buster_ESPN
Diamondbacks working hard on something big, and a Garza/Upton framework makes sense for both Cubs and Diamondbacks.
Headley would be an upgrade, and a need because of injuries.
What happens if arod’s hand bothers him the rest of the year?
With headley,it solves a ton of problems.
Sometimes a trade makes a team better.
Look at the brosius trade.
I think headley would be absolutely perfect.
I would then dh arod, and ibanez, trade,or release jones.
Also, joba returning will help a lot.
We have too many bullpen specialists who end up facing opposite handed hitters.
Winning the next 2 will just about erase the orioles.
This is a crazy deadline
I do echo the Wigginton sentiment. And isn’t he the antithesis of what everyone’s yammering for? Last I remember Wiggington, he was a power hitter. Wish we had a Jacoby Ellsbury who played the infield!
I read a post about me last night that I feel compelled to answer:
Is Bernie a HOFer? no…But he was a star, a very good CF and a force in the Yankee lineup for many years…Saying that Montero has the tools to be a very special player, that he will be an allstar C at some point and that he will be a force in some lineup is stating that he is going to be a very good player…To be HOFer he needs to do that for a very extended period of time and depends on too many outside factors ( How well he will age, injuries, sustain the drive to stay on top and so on…). That’s why a take issue on some people saying that I have stated such a preposterous thing. And more importantly, I was no hedging, I was just simply recognizing how difficult it is to become a HOF member…
I do remember when the trade deadline was fun…………… this my friend sucks
Borsius really shouldn’t be a point of reference for Headley, besides 3B.
how does Garza for Upton make any sense for the Dbacks.
If Towers would do a deal centered around Garza for Upton then Cashman better be involved….
Blake-
Especially since Garza is injured right now.
Maybe the D’backs are feeling the heat from the Dodgers and Giants.
Buster_ESPN
Diamondbacks working hard on something big, and a Garza/Upton framework makes sense for both Cubs and Diamondbacks.
—
I thought they wanted an ace? Garza is decent but he’s no top pitcher.
I find it hard to believe Arizona would deal Upton for a less than healthy Garza. You do not gamble a player like Upton onna SP with a health issue. NO WAY. If it’s a 3 Way and another team gambles on Garza, so be it. But if it’s just the Cubs and D Backs, I do not see Towers rolling the bones with Upton involved.
Cashman seems content to just take his chances come October. Considering we’ve been knocked out early so many times in the last decade, from his standpoint, they are probably just better off standing pat and hoping the team gets hot for 3 weeks in the fall.
Trisha
I agree with all that you posted in response and just so you know I am perfectly happy with this team.
But in IMO all this 189 stuff is just a propaganda ploy so the Yankee can increase an already healthy bottom line. They are feeding it to us fans and hoping we take the bait. Ok I get it they have a budget. i also get fans not being happy about it. Afterall this win at any costs monster was created by George and the Yankees anyway.
Have to run see ya later
bernie is not hof but he had hof years… he was an indispensable force in those yankee lineup of the late 90s. Bernie is underrated as Jeter is overrated.
Buster_ESPN
Justin Upton has Cubs on his no-trade list, so that would have to be worked out.
I believe the comparison between Headley and Brosius is accurate. The price is what I need to know.
Buster_ESPN
Diamondbacks working hard on something big, and a Garza/Upton framework makes sense for both Cubs and Diamondbacks.

Update: Dewayne Wise refuses outright assignment
By Mike Axisa
July 30th: Via Feinsand, Wise has refused the outright assignment. The Yankees have until Wednesday to either trade or (more likely) release him. Your bunt will not be forgotten, Dewayne.
The Yankees are said to value D at 3B.
That ain’t Wiggington.
“The Mariners are loaded with pitching….this is an opportunity to become more well rounded and flexible…..since what they are doing now clearly isn’t working.”
Blake ~
Correction – the Mariners are loaded with “pitching prospects” – they have yet to prove anything. Felix is an ace and a leader – the perfect mentor for those young arms. And, that attachment re: Felix goes both ways … nobody thought he’d sign the first deal, who’s to say he won’t sign another?
Clearly some things aren’t working, e.g., Smoak. They gave him a LOT of rope and now he’s down working on whatever he needs to work on – he may be back, he may not. There HAS been progress with some of the young bats – currently six young players w/OPS+ over 100 – baby steps (oh – and your fellow Tar Heel, Seager, leads the MAJORS in RBI w/RISP and 2-out!). There is no question that the M’s need more offense but, it needs to be major league proven offense that can take some of the pressure off the young ones as they grow and lead by example and deed.
Remember, it’s the Mariners, not the Yankees – rebuilding requires patience
Now, I gotta get some work done…
Cashmoney,
Not arguing your very good points about Bernie…I just used him as an example of a very good player that is not in the HOF to give perspective to a comment I made a while back and it was used to say that i said that Montero was a sure HOFer….
Guys – it’s Buster Olney…I’m more likely to get a trade right than Buster friggin Olney.
I see a split for the next 2 game… tillman could give Yanks fit with a b lineup. later all.
“If the Yankees are that desperate for a 1b then call up Branyan or Cust.”
~
Just what you need, more exM’s
Wigginton reminding me of Ken Phelps. Better not be a young player of Any value going to Philly.
If I’m PHI, I try and shop Ruiz now that I have Joseph. He’s 33, but a good hitting catcher and I try to get some young position prospects back from a desperate team that needs offense.
no need to justify yourself luis, i enjoy your comment. can’t please all.

Print money this isn’t George’s Yankees
TAr – I don’t think it was a propaganda ploy. I remember reading somewhere that anything over the $189 would have some really hefty financial burdens attached to it. I don’t believe they’ve increased their bottom line by much unless they have Swiss bank accounts – and with the world market, even that couldn’t be good. They are subject to the same economy the rest of us are. You can’t pretend Stadium debt doesn’t exist. That doesn’t get paid with good will.

Man I really like Hunter Pence. Both the Giants and Dodgers are trying to load up.
Dodgers just sold for $2 Billion and we are supposed to be concerned with “possible” debt of a Yankee franchise valued at Over $3 Billion???? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
And let me hasten to add that I don’t think they do a lot in the way of propagandizing because the Yankees were sitting extremely pretty when Cashman announced, some years back, that they were going to start going from within and cutting back on buying stars – that as a response to the constant criticism they were getting about Yankee overspending and buying championships. And when you get right down to it, they don’t owe the fans an explanation about their profit margin.
I like what Theo is doing with the Cubs… they have a few nice pieces in the field and he is trying to load up on pitching. Vizcaino is a risk but if he turns out to his potential, the Cubs slaughtered the Braves on that Maholm/Johnson trade.
Best thing about Pence if I’m the Giants is that now I don’t have to give Melky a long term contract.
Thanks Cash, likewise

——————-
That’s where you’re wrong – we aren’t supposed to care about the possible Yankee debt – the Yankee owners are concerned with it.
It’s very easy to spend other people’s money. But the bottom line is this – unless Yankee fans react to their desire to get under the $189M cap by not showing up at all the Yankees don’t actually care what you think.
My 2 cents and MLBTV report that Yankees and a mystery team are still talking to Cubs for Dempster.
YT – I wondered about the same thing when I first saw Dempster mentioned. The possibility of a three-way.
If they want a very good ML pitcher to try and win now, I could see Garza making sense for them for Upton.
They’re not gonna get a Matt Moore or Jarrod Parker. It has to be an established young #2 type that isn’t making a lot of money and the team will have to absorb all of his salary. Can’t see too many teams being able to do both.
YT-
Forget about Dempster. His “stuff” won’t translate well in the AL East.
Plus, I have a feeling the guy prefers to stay in the N.L. where he knows the teams/hitters very well.
I seriously doubt that Hal is concerned about making his mortgage payment.
Headley is making $3.475 million in his second arbitration year, this year, and will be eligible for free agency after the 2014 season.
If Girardi has a say, Wiggington would be a Yankee, so he would have a Wiggy.
A real question: I thought the people of NY paid for NYS? Is that not true? I thought it was mostly tax payer dollars and the Yanks just had to make OYS a park to compensate lol. I could be wrong of course. Anyone have info?
The Yankees owe us nothing… and it works both ways. Everyone here loves the team and loves baseball. Please can we stop applying our thoughts on baseball to our thoughts about life? Opinions about baseball don’t hurt anyone. In life, if I was on Team Greedy, that could hurt other people. In baseball.. not so much. It’s a luxury to love a sports team. Do with that luxury what you will.
Trader,
How expensive is the Dempster contract?…I don’t like Soriano back, even though he would feel right at home hitting approach wise
( HR or bust ) LOL!!!
About Hughes….I don’t think he should be traded, I think he should be extended before he gets too expensive
DONNYBROOK July 31st, 2012 at 2:01 pm

WTP-
I’m not vying for Dempster , just facilitating another rumor.
The mystery team is the one that the Yanks have on the DL
Trading Garza is akin to selling a car up-on-blocks.
I think some people are misunderstanding the significance of 2014. It is about the 189 for 2014 ONLY. If the Yankees can get under that number for that year only (not sure if it for te full year, start of the year, etc.) then a lot of the cap tax and penalties all get reset. It is entirely possible for them to go big again beginning in 2015.
“That’s where you’re wrong – we aren’t supposed to care about the possible Yankee debt – the Yankee owners are concerned with it. ”
And it appears that they are!
“It’s very easy to spend other people’s money. But the bottom line is this – unless Yankee fans react to their desire to get under the $189M cap by not showing up at all the Yankees don’t actually care what you think.”
As long as the Yankees put a contender on the field, fans are going to show up. The Yankees continue to put a contender on the field. If the Yankee thought it was ludicrous that fans in 2012 are trying to tell them what to do in 2014, I would think they would be entirely justified. I think you’re really going to have to wait until 2014 to see what shakes out in 2014. I don’t find that a bit unreasonable either. Fans need to learn how to chill. It would be the greatest lesson they could learn, for everybody concerned.

Dempster is getting $14M this year.

At this point it might make sense for the Cubs to keep Dempster if they can’t tie Soriano in the deal, and offer Ryan a qualifying offer so they can get a compensation pick.

Please no Wigginton. Cust and Branyan in the minors, both who should be on the team over Ibanez right now.
Also, no Dempster. He’s good, but pitching isn’t our problem and he wouldn’t even be in a post-season rotation with CC/Pettitte/Kiroda. Plus, I don’t want to give anyone up that might be used in an off-season dream world Upton trade.
YT,
Wigginton, if they will pay some salary is as much as we will see. My prediction is only apost waiver deal. Now, everyone can be happy the Yankees don’t buy players any more. They get ones no one else wants since they are old. Most GMs seek youth such as Upton, Headley and the like.

(Seriously though, is anyone else worried about Andy given our pursuit of Dempster?)
Add to the Dempster stuff – that Girardi knows him from Florida
Thanks for clearing it up re the 189. I till don’t fully believe that he Yankees will be forever shopping in the bargain bin. They do have bloated contracts but they also have young pitching with potentially more to come. If they can keep the owners away from running the team, they petty much will not have to spend money ont he bullpen. The rotation is pretty good with CC at the top, then guys like Pineda (keeping fingeres firmly crossed), Hughes, Nova, Phelps, Banuelos, Betances (still not ready to throw in the towel) and others. And, the next wave of prospects is position players (Romine and Murphy, Joseh and Adams and maybe even Pirela, Mesa and Almontes x 2, Austin and Williams and Heathcott all in mix for 2014. Not every prospect will make it but if you can get one from each group – pitcher, outfielder and infielder the Yankees wil actually be in a decent position.

CC has been an awful postseason pitcher aside from 09
Andy is coming off an injury
Hughes leads the league in HRs allowed
Nova leads the league in XBH’s allowed
Kuroda is solid, fine to slot in the 2-3 spot, probably the least amount of unpredictably with him compared to our other guys
Dempster gives us another option to throw into the mix

IDK if the Dempster talk is legit, but if the NYY were to include PH or Nova in a deal of some sort (even if to AZ in 3 way deal) they’d have to get someone in NY in a hurry to pitch. Nova pitches tonight and PH tomorrow @ 1PM.

Originally Pettitte was due back in 60 days around the end of August or at least by September 1st. Now they say sometime in September. Yankees need quality starts from all their starters, because the bullpen has caught Wadeitis. I hope Joba is the cure!!
Ok let’s say is serious…What would be the benefits for the Yankees?..The way i see it, this means they are trading one of the cost controlled starters after this move for a bat, otherwise it makes no sense…Wouldn’t this move defeat the objective of going under 189 mil mark by 2014?…You are adding a pitcher that is currently costing 14 mil and trading either Nova/ Hughes that cost a fraction of that ( 400K’s and 3,3 mil if I am not mistaken)…If you extend Dempster is probably going to cost more than those 14 mil they are currently paying him and on top of that you have to take Soriano and his ugly contract until 2014, making the already inflexible payroll even more inflexible….Then, if you trade for a bat ( Upton ) you add more payroll and you relinquish some prospects as well, unless you flip Soriano to Arizona ( unlikely, if I were Towers i say no)…thoughts?
On an hour plus, we will find the same
team. The Yankees lose annually in the playoffs because they have a one dimensional team. It takes
blinders not to see that.

Not every prospect will make it but if you can get one from each group – pitcher, outfielder and infielder the Yankees wil actually be in a decent position.

Good points.. a lot has to work out for that to happen. I think we’ll find out what the Yanks are about when Cano hits FA. We’ll get a better sense of things once they hand out their first long term deal after the CBA was introduced (does CC count?). Again… if Hamels got a $24 million AAV…… Cano is going to get at least as much. Boras doesn’t have enough money lol, he’ll make sure Cano rakes.
For all his speed, it should be noted that Gardner, when he played CF, was not permitted to play a shallow one. Why? Because he does not go back well, in spite of his excellence coast to coast.
–
Gardner is also one of the best fielders in the game at coming in on balls, so its no surprise he played to his own strength like you suggest Granderson is doing.
Granderson’s UZR being poor does not make him a bad fielder, it just means against the current crop of centerfielders he may be more mistake prone or likely to blunder a play. He gets bad reads sometimes and has had some trouble on balls hit right at him. He has weaknesses. I think everyone in baseball would be happy with Granderson in CF.
Luis-
The only way it makes sense to me is if the Yankees could flip Dempster to Towers for Upton.
That is really complicated and highly unlikely.
Joelsherman1
Source tells me Dempster would go to #Yankees particularly because of relationship with Hendry who signed him to contract currently on #Cubs
Part of me feels that Cash/Theo are playing the Dodgers here. Making Dodgers agree or have them think they’ll lose him to Yanks. Why would Cash do this? Because Theo would repay the favor in some form or fashion at a later date.
It’s possible.
Joelsherman1
Dempster wouldn’t even be sure of a playoff start, so #Yankees are not going to give up much, if anything, to get him. #Cubs
Only Dempster if we et Soriano and Cubs pay ALOT of it!
JM-
Dempster is not 34………………he’s 35!
MTU-
If you get Dempster, even as a rental, and turn around and get Upton or Choo…………not a deal for you if Hughes a FA in 2014, is the one and not Nova?
Joelsherman1
Only way Dempster makes sense for #Yankees is if privately think Pettitte not coming back, and I had multiple team execs swear he is
Dempster gives verbal consent to be traded to Yankees, IF a deal can be worked out.
CC
Kuroda
Dempster
AP
Nova
Hughes
Whoa !!!!
luis – Without knowing what they’d give up for Dempster you can’t really evaluate things…. I cannot imagine them giving up either Hughes or Nova for a couple months of service. That wouldn’t be a Team Greedy move. Team Greedy would want to find a way to get Dempster (just for sh*ts and giggles) and not give up anything on the MLB roster. Or any A prospects.
To me, Dempster Only makes sence if the Yanks move him to Arizona for Upton. Another NL Chucker coming over to the AL. Not good.
JackCurryYES
While Yankees have had conversation with Cubs about Dempster, still unsure if it could be pulled together b4 deadline.
Dempster to the Yankees makes little sense, why not get a bat instead?
I am very confident in CC, Kuroda, Hughes, Nova in any combination going into the playoffs. Dempster is not amazing. He is having a great season in Chicago but he barely throws 90. Doesn’t seem worth trading prospects for the marginal upgrade when the lineup has been torn apart by injury and ineffectiveness.
As for the 189 limit, if you go under 1 time then your penalty resets, but to get the full revenue sharing rebates you need to stay under for every year. They will already be saving money if they just keep their payroll at 210 because the tax threshold increases to 189 and that means they will pay 3 million less in tax.
Even if you get Dempster I dunno how you flip him for Upton… you’d still have to beef up that package quite a bit, no?
Count me as Pro-Dempster. As long as we aren’t giving up top prospects.
How does Dempster hit?
Yt-
It sounds like you’re talkin’ at least 2 separate things.
First off, why would I move Hughes to the Cubs for Dempster ?
2nd, what does Dempster have to do w. Upton ? He would have to approve a sign-n-trade. That ain’t happening.
3rd, You’re dreamin’.
Could be essentially a 3 Way, Cubs\Yanks\DBacks.
CC-
Good point. Perhaps the mystery team is the Rangers and Cashman knows this, and would rather try and get the Dodgers involved and serious so that the Rangers don’t end up with him.
Cashman kept the Mariners in discussions until the last hour, the last minutes for Randy Johnson and in a way directed him to the NL, where the back-up team the Astros traded for him.
“Dempster to the Yankees makes little sense, why not get a bat instead?”
only way is if A) they aren’t sure about pettite B) they have another deal in works for a bat involving a current starter.
kinda last minute for that second one to make sense.
What will it take to get Dempster, who will be a free agent?!
Rotation is fine. Fielders are dropping like FLIES.
Dempster is a career 0.99 hitter with a .239 OPS in 588 career ABs
@JackCurryYES
The Yankees haven’t yet been told that Dempster would waive no-trade clause. With 90 minutes b4 deadline, that’s a bit of a stumbling block.
MTU,
Even then, the prospects and current roster players we would have to relinquish make it a no go for me. But it’s just me
“Could be essentially a 3 Way, Cubs\Yanks\DBacks.”
both the Cubs and Yankees couldn’t have Upton so that doesn’t really work.
Donny-
No it can’t because it would take Dempster agreeing to a sign-n-trade.
Haley’s comet hitting the Earth is more likely IMO.
“Dempster is a career 0.99 hitter with a .239 OPS in 588 career ABs”
yea that doesn’t help….
Supposedly, either Dempster lives in Arizona, has a house there, or some other geographic tie. He Has approved being traded to the Yanks.
Thrilled to see we haven’t come up with any bats with an hour or so to go before deadline.
I’d bet on the pitching we have right now. To see Cashman chase Dempster and not get a real upgrade bat is just sad. They clearly don’t see the team the way a lot of fans do. Just close your eyes and wish for homers. That’s the ticket. It works great when pitchers throw our guys cookies.
joelsherman1
Possible #Yankees are seeing if #Cubs so desperate to move $, get sone level prospect that Dempster just falls in lap.
If that is their strategy, then I have to imagine the Dodgers who are desperate for him will give up something decent right?
” Just close your eyes and wish for homers.”
Girardi says homers are hits too

If we want MORE MORE MORE pitching is that less greedy than wanting MORE MORE MORE hitting? If we get Dempster I might need to draft Cash on Team Greedy.
MTU-
If the Yankees want a serious bat, in this case Upton, and Towers wants a starter, the Yankees need another starter,in this case Dempster to get in the fold before trading Hughes in this case to Arizona.
If the Yankees are taking on the rest of Dempster’s 14M the Cubs are not asking for or getting Hughes.Nova/Phelps.
Capish???? Did I spell that right??
Cubs are supposedly interested in extremely young players, D Backs want a Stud SP, and Yanks want offense. Dodgers remain the main players inna Dempster deal. Again, if you can, tune in MLB NETWORK

They’re probably more focused on the fake Peter Gammons feed. I know I am. Jack Curry isn’t as entertaining.
I totally have no beef with a team that hits lots of HRs, that owns, but why do they think it has to be either or? Like we can’t be a team that hits .270 with lots of HRs we have to hit .240 with lots of HRs.
A guy that hits .300 with plenty of homers is great, look at Robinson Cano. Look at 09 Tex or MVP A-rod. We don’t even have guys that can walk enough to offset their low batting averages. Its one thing if we fielded a team full of .240/.400/.460 type guys. Instead they are walking enough to keep their OBP around .300… so their one tool is power.
Its a one tool team. Players should have more than 1 tool! The .300/.400/.500 player is the king of the roost. They can still hit their HRs, but in the other ABs try to hit some doubles or something, damn.
So far the most interesting thing I’ve learned with the trade deadline coming up is that Peter Gammons’ niece follows my fake Gammons account on Twitter, lol.
If we get Dempster will the Post promise tomorrow’s back page headline read “Dempster Diving”. Chad can take that one too for a blog post headline if he wants since I like Chad.
John Hart and Verducci are excellent. Hart’s been a successful executive before so his insight is very good.
Much better than guys like Rosenthal and Heyman
From Dempster’s standpoint, why in the world would he turn down pitching in Turner Field but say yes to going to Yankee Stadium, in his contract year?
I like how even when we’re talking about a totally different player we’re still trying to figure out how trading for Dempster gets us Upton lol.
I’ve really never believed we need bat. Losing 6 games by 1 Run aside. That’s pretty fluky. The in between situation with A-Rod is uncomfortable, but not so much so that they should make big obligations and trade top prospects, in my opinion.
Filling out the rotation with another veteran can help down the stretch, and in the playoffs. Especially when you take Pettitte’s condition into consideration.
Shame,
If he is a rental, then I wouldn’t give up anything of value for him…As Sherman says, it only makes sense if Pettitte can’t comeback for the PS…Country Club may have a point about making sure Dempster doesn’t end up with the Rangers
Capish???? Did I spell that right??

If they traded Phelps for Headley and then junk for Dempster I’d be ok with that…..
“Dempster to the Yankees makes little sense, why not get a bat instead?”
I would agree with this unless they are so convinced that one bat isn’t going to make enough a difference but they want to counteract it with getting enough quality pitching that come playoff time “our pitching can match your pitching” and maybe we pop a few out of here and win.
Who knows.
Soon enough it will be what it is – whatever that is.
Why should NYY be afraid of Dempster ending up on the Rangers?
Rangers have a bunch of 2-3 type pitchers, Dempster would be a solid addition, not a game changer like a Lee, Greinke, or Hamels would have been
And if Cashman doesn’t want to get anyone with salary because of the 189 limit in 2014 he is a dumb dumb. Acquiring a player now with a known AAV is just as good as waiting until 2014 to sign people. Gosh imagine if the Yankees haven’t won anything since 2009 and its the 2013 offseason and he did NOTHING to prepare for getting under the limit and now he has to deal with signing Cano/Granderson/replacing RF or whatever.
Trader,
35? Even worse! LOL
I seriously don’t get it….I suppose a 3-way trade would make sense but with little time left that seems like a complete longshot to me.
YT-
Only one problem.
You’d be trading away Hughes for Dempster who you don’t even know would sign a long term contract with the Yankees.
He’s frickin’ expensive anyway.
Someone would have to replace Phil next year.
Is that Phelps ?
Show me next year’s rotation minus Hughes.
Jerkface -
I’m sure the Yankees would be thrilled if Tex and Granderson were hitting for higher averages – but they’re not – and there’s nothing the Yankees can do right now to change that dynamic. Teams don’t have any desire to part with guys who are young, hit for average and power and are signed to reasonable contracts.
Even if they did – the Yankees, due to the long term commitments that they’re locked into, don’t have places to play them even if they could get them.
That’s part of the reason Brian doesn’t want to do long term contracts – he – no GM really – doesn’t want to be locked into long term deals because they almost never work out over the long haul.
Count me as worried about how well a pitcher from the National League will fare in the A.L. East. If the Yankees are going to flip Dempster, that’s fine. If they are going to use him to replace Hughes or Nova, that would be a big mistake IMHO.

I agree that a strategy at the deadline can be to overload one area to try and make up for elsewhere, but Dempster would be switching leagues midseason, doesn’t throw 90, and is a righty so he’d be entering a non-favorable stadium.
Plus it displaces one of Hughes or Nova from the playoff rotation. Thats kind of a bummer as a fan, right?

I think that if a scenario like that were to happen – it would be Hughes for Headley with Dempster taking his spot in the rotation – but that’s a lot of moving parts for 75 minutes.
Dempster to the Yankees, would not agree to being flipped. Makes sense only if the Yankees have to sacrifice Hughes in a separate deal for a quality young bat.

JF, I was just throwing out a thought to attempt to fit the scenario. I really don’t even know enough about Dempster so I figured he had to be a real hot-shot for them to be mentioning him.
I know that I personally don’t want to see Hughes or Nova leaving the team.

I would prefer Upton alone, rather than renting Dempster and trading for Headley. Long term certainty vs short term.
I refuse to believe that Dempster would be ineffective in the AL East when he’s statistically outpitched every starter on our staff this season. I flat out refuse that notion.
Maybe he’s not an ace, but I bet he’d be better than someone in our rotation.

luis – I’m just sayin’…. almost every here has been scratching their head about the Dempster pursuit. Maybe we aren’t all that awful/spoiled/greedy after all. I mean, we just want Justin Upton and want to keep all of our current players to get him. Is that so much to ask?!!
====================================
I would trade Garcia for Upton straight up….

See! We’re charitable.

Not even if he come with Miggy – and for free?!?

“How’s it going? Missing Brandon League?”

Not one bit – we’ve got The Bartender

Sounds like the Cubs are using the Yankees to get the Dodgers to make a deal for Dempster. Yankees will only move if the price is cheap.
I hear ya Trader Good afternoon my friend!
Start rappelling now Cash or you won’t make it.
JM-
And the Yankees might very well be engaged so that Dempster does go to the Dodgers and stays away from the Rangers. Two can play that game!
Erik Boland ?@eboland11
One talent evaluator: “Brian just doesn’t want to deal top prospects.” Difficult to imagine him doing so for Dempster
Are we all having fun yet?
Didn’t the Yankees get Abreu at the last minute? Remember, even though it hits 4PM some deals are done but aren’t announced until about a half an hour later, so stay tuned.
Cashman-Now is not the tiime for your cell phone battery to die!!
Theo is leaking the Demp’s rumor to push the Dodgers to take on more of Soriano’s contract…….Demp’s is not better than Hughes and or Nova……I understand that The Yanks’front office loves the vet-type arms but it’s a foolish move if it were to happen…….Get a right handed stick instead

I agree….If it keeps him away from the Rangers, that’s fine….Only have to worry about the Dodgers if Yanks get to the WS
I have to agree with others who have commented that this was a lot more fun, but not necessarily best for the Yankees, when George would trade away the farm for guys like Raul Mondesi.
I’m content just to watch rivals’ GMs pi$$ away young guys for what they think is the golden calf. I’d rather see Cash act like Boss Hog and go to war with our lame, creaky, muscle memory crew. We know what we have, other teams know what we have, and we just have to plod ahead. Believe me, I’m not thrilled with what has happened lately, but whaddyagonnado?
Al Leiter for Jesse Barfield was a beauty too.
We hate bad trades, we hate no trades….. we love our prospects and we don’t like NL pitchers… and so it goes
Word is that the Mets will only send David Wright to the Bronx if the Yanks also take on the remainder of Bobby Bonilla’s contract and Larry Jonhson’s contract from the Knicks.
JM-
The way things look right now the Angels and Dodgers might be in the WS
Reds got Broxton
Dan Szymborski There will be no trade for Dempster that involves Olt and Profar.
To make the Wright deal the Yankees will also have to take on Jeremy Lin’s contract and get him to agree to return to the Knicks…
jonmorosi
#Padres still may trade Chase Headley. Stay tuned.
I would sign off on that if Levine would swallow the poison pill.
Shopping Freddy makes sense. 1 year contract, veteran presence.
If Dempster is picked up, he takes Freddy’s spot.
But that could mean Phelps+ packaged with Garcia for Headley.
I’d do it.
texas got dempster…
good. yankees didnt need pitching.
