Nova knocked around again

The Yankees starter who simply knows how to win seems to have forgotten. Ivan Nova has one win since June 17, and his recent spiral continued in tonight’s 7-2 loss to the Tigers. Nova was charged with all seven Detroit runs on a season-high 11 hits. He’s allowed 16 runs in his past 10.1 innings, and tonight Joe Girardi pulled him after just 68 pitches. Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera each homered off Nova, and when the Yankees came back to tie the game, Nova responded by allowing five straight singles in the fifth and three straight singles in the sixth. Tigers ace Justin Verlander was terrific — two unearned runs and a career-high 14 strikeouts — and gave up the only Yankees runs after his own error kept the fifth inning alive. Nova’s ERA is up to 4.81.
