Yankees acquire Derek Lowe

Marc Carig from the Star-Ledger is reporting that the Yankees have acquired Derek Lowe. Looks like he could be the temporary starter in place of Sabathia.
UPDATE, 6:22 p.m.: Lowe will pitch out of the bullpen for the Yankees, which makes David Phelps the almost certain starter on Monday. The Yankees are expected to temporarily call-up Ryota Igarashi to provide a bullpen arm for tomorrow’s game.
UPDATE, 6:25 p.m.: A Yankees source has confirmed that Phelps will start Monday.
UPDATE, 6:40 p.m: Lowe actually had a 3.06 ERA after his start on June 1. At that point he was 7-3 and looking like a valuable part of the Indians rotation. Since June 1, Lowe is 1-7 with an 8.77 ERA, more walks than strikeouts and an opponents’ slash line of .350/.418/.502

They are definitely pigeonholing Phelps in the bullpen in 2012. He’s going to be showcased in Winter ball like Noesi. There will be at least one trade in the winter IMHO.
Carig also said tat Lowe still throws enough grounders to be an effective stopgap. I haven’t looked at his numbers, but hopefully that’s true.

it’s the other way around.
you can’t ever count on pitchers.
if the yankees were built around an amazing powerful offense, they would not be so vulnerable when a guy like CC goes down.
offensive players can get career ending injuries at any time just like pitchers, but it happens much less often with everyday players. every now and then , there’s an albert belle situation, but it happens at about a fourth the times it happens with pitchers.
any team that builds around pitchers with long contracts, watch out because they will likely become albatrosses around the teams neck.

Guess we’re shopping at the dollar store now. Lowe lasted 2.1 innings on his last start against KC.

But all in all not a bad insurance pick-up.
Well that’s a bit of a surprise, isn’t it?
Lowe is unlikely to do anything particularly useful, but he can go innings should Phelps get smacked around early on Monday.
I’m with Tar… if Phelps is decent Lowe may be a Yankee for all of 48 hours…. which is plenty.
Lowe is a cheap fill-in. a veteran arm that they can abuse without long term consequence. he is not affecting anyone’s developmental plan.

If they had a day off before CC comes back on the 23rd hopefully. They can use 4 pitchers and have Phelps and Lowe piggyback 2 of our starters.
Lowe for insurance is a brilliant move by the organization. Cheap W/ tons of experience in
meaningful games. His first start will be against the depleted Red Sox at the Stadium. Genius with good theatre. He will be auditioning for next years return to Boston.
You have to admire how the Yankees develop these contingency plans and quickly spring into action when they are needed
Lowe only gets paid the prorated league minimum.
The move can’t hurt at all,and can only help.
But they don’t have a day off.
lowe is going to replace whoever they call up from aaa to take cc’s place.

I’m guessing Phelps for 4. Lowe for 3. And Joba for 2.
they should have just kept phelps as a freaking starter.
It would be no different is Phelps was the starter instead of Garcia. They would have to strech out Garcia instead and an innings caddy like Lowe would still be required,
Rays are playing good ball. They are our biggest threat. 3-0 in the first w/ no outs..

not only is price pitching well, but james shields has put it together and pitched very well the last month.
so phelps is no longer our bullpen savior?
