Despite sore back, Chavez expects to play tomorrow

Ichiro Suzuki pinch hit today, at least partially because Eric Chavez wasn’t available.

Joe Girardi said Chavez was a non-player all weekend because of soreness in his back. Even so, Girardi said the situation has improved day-by-day, and Girardi still expects Chavez to play tomorrow.

“Chavy hasn’t felt great after playing those four days in a row,” Girardi said. “I don’t think it will be an issue tomorrow. But he has not felt great.”

Chavez downplayed the situation, saying his back hurts often. He’s used to it, and he seemed to expect it after playing — and playing very well — those four straight days in Detroit.

“It was more just make sure I stay off the turf,” Chavez said. “I played four games in Detroit. I was supposed to have that third day off. (Girardi) pushed me there knowing he was going to keep me off the turf here. They had three left-handers so it worked out pretty good.”

Chavez didn’t hesitate in saying he would be able to play tomorrow.

“I communicate with him every day is what I do,” Girardi said. “I talk to him. We talked about maybe when we went Monday (and) Tuesday, giving him Wednesday off. But he said, ‘I’m OK. I’m able to DH for you.’ And I saw how was on Thursday, and he said it’s OK. And we got here on Friday and he didn’t feel great. So, obviously he was important to our wins there, so I’m glad I played him, and I think I’ll have him tomorrow.”
