9. Pedro Ciriaco 3B

Franklin Morales LHP

TV/Radio: MY9/WCBS 880

Umpires: Paul Emmel HP, Scott Barry 1B, Jerry Meals 2B, Gary Darling 3B

Weather: mostly cloudy, chance of rain

Ichiro hot: Suzuki has batted .462 (12 for 26) over his last seven starts and has hit safely in 19 of his 20 starts since coming over from the Mariners.

Hughes not: Hughes has allowed 11 earned runs over his last two starts, covering 8 1/3 innings. He’s also 3-6 with a 6.17 ERA in 18 career games vs. the Red Sox, including 10 starts. He’s 2-5 with a 6.66 ERA in those starts.

Update, 7:14: Hughes got through about 10 pitches before the rain came. But no delay yet. Hughes had a good start to this game — 1-2-3 first.

Update, 7:20: Homer No. 17 for Swisher, 1-0.

Update, 7:24: Top second, one out. The sky doesn’t look happy. Rain continues. Play on.

Update, 7:29: Another good inning for Hughes, 1-2-3 with a swinging K on a fastball. Maybe he’s corrected the mechanical failure from last time in releasing the ball.

Update, 7:34: Yankees enjoying playing in the rain more at this point. Granderson, who was down to .235, hits No. 31. Then Martin hits one to near the same spot, right-field seats, back-to-back homers, and it’s 3-0 in the second.

Update, 7:47: Hughes throws a double-play ball into center field, first and third, no outs in the third.

Update, 7:51: Yankees can’t turn two on Ciriaco, 3-1.

Update, 7:59: Hughes grooves a fastball, three-run HR for Pedroia, 4-3 Boston in the third.

Update, 8:02: All four runs unearned.

Update, 8:18: One single and that’s it off Hughes in the fourth. The weather has improved thankfully, at least for now.

Update, 8:26: Morales has settled down, 1-2-3 fourth thanks to a diving stop by Mike Aviles on a Martin grounder.

Update, 8:31: Hughes works a one-single fifth. Outside of that third inning, he’s been fine. And he would’ve been fine in that inning if he hadn’t made that error.

Update, 8:38: HR 10 for Jeter, No. 250 of his career, tying for ninth on the Yankees’ all-time list. 4-4.

Update, 8:49: Four runs, four hits allowed by Hughes through six.

Update, 8:59: First and third, one out in the home sixth. Righty Clayton Mortensen will replace Morales.

Update, 9:09: Clutch hitting by Nix, 0-2 pitch, two outs, line drive single to right, 5-4.

Update, 9:19: Eight in a row now for Hughes, four runs, four hits through seven.

Update, 9:25: Swisher hits another, 19th career multihomer game. And he has homered from both sides of the plate for the 12th time. Andrew Miller on to pitch. It’s 6-4.

Update, 9:51: Soriano on for the ninth.

Update, 9:58: Yankees win, 6-4.

Where in GA are you, Tom ?

  3. UnKnown August 17th, 2012 at 7:10 pm

    M. Kay saying he thought the ump had a spasm calling the first pitch a strike.

I guess he is trying to do better in the humor category.

  4. UnKnown August 17th, 2012 at 7:11 pm

    Up Chuck the Boggie Style

  5. jackamir August 17th, 2012 at 7:11 pm

Lets get it on Yankees. Hughes has to come up big ( how many times have we said that) because time is running out . A time to prove his worth and cement his future with the Yankees. A bad start will make him a trade piece for the off season.

  6. waldo geraldo faldo August 17th, 2012 at 7:14 pm

    A little upchuck the boogie.

Halfway between Atlanta and Augusta, East Nowhere, GA. The nearest Walmart is 25 miles away.

Swish wants to be a Yankee next year in a Bad Way Baby

  9. tomingeorgia August 17th, 2012 at 7:20 pm

Hi Tom and crew , nice evening up here – ” New York, New York,” just came on so I thought I’d say hi – strap yourself in for the ride ; I don’t know if I’d have the endurance for it anymore,….been so long :) have a good one

  13. jackamir August 17th, 2012 at 7:20 pm

Tommy—- Are you in the witness protection program. How did you get there and where did you grow up? I’ve wanted to ask you this for quite awhile. SWISH goes longball…

  14. JM August 17th, 2012 at 7:25 pm

Swish picked a great time to get hot…..Looks like rain off and on for most of the evening….

  15. Jeff in Canada August 17th, 2012 at 7:25 pm

Must be interesting weather there. Feinsand tweets went from “POURING” to “lightened up” to “raining hard” over about 10 minutes.

  16. tomingeorgia August 17th, 2012 at 7:26 pm

    jackamir,
Born in Minnesota, grew up in NYC and Bergen County, schooled in Massachusetts. Since then, roughly 30 addresses, from Minnesota again, North Carolina, Arizona, Tennessee, Ohio, back to New Jersey, then East Nowhere, Georgia. It’s either a varied experience or a checkered past. Like it here, though.

  17. igotid88 August 17th, 2012 at 7:26 pm

I thought the umpire was calling anything close a strike?

This probably won’t go over well, but that Sux line up isn’t all bad.

Plug Papi into there and it is not an easy one to navigate.

Imagine if they hadn’t traded Reddick, Papi and Middlebrooks weren’t injured, move Ciriaco to SS where he belongs.

    Elsbury
    Crawford
    Pedroia
    Gonzalez
    Ortiz
    Reddick
    Middlebrooks
    Salty
    Ciriaco

    Pretty good.

Even putting Pods or Ross in for Reddick it’s pretty good. Too bad (for them) their #1 and 2 starting pitchers mailed in the season.

  19. Ken Phelps August 17th, 2012 at 7:30 pm

Yes they’re line up solid…. StartIng pitching bad

  20. jackamir August 17th, 2012 at 7:31 pm

Tommy—-Wow, that blows my mind and you are a devout Yankee fan. I tip my Yankee cap to you, brother…..

  21. yankeefeminista August 17th, 2012 at 7:31 pm

Atta boy, Phil. Love seeing all those changeups.

  22. jacksquat August 17th, 2012 at 7:33 pm

That Ciriaco looks pretty good if he can continue to hit.

  23. yankeefeminista August 17th, 2012 at 7:34 pm

    Lol!

  24. UnKnown August 17th, 2012 at 7:35 pm

We are just a tad better than these guys are this year.

  25. yankeefeminista August 17th, 2012 at 7:35 pm

Back to back! This is too easy.

  26. jackamir August 17th, 2012 at 7:35 pm

Lets get 5 in the books quickly. Home run Derby===Back to Back

  27. jacksquat August 17th, 2012 at 7:36 pm

Red Sox Pitching seems to be an oxymoron this year. :)

  28. UnKnown August 17th, 2012 at 7:36 pm

Danny Cunningham is trying to devise a way to get this through 4.5. Not sure how he is going to do that.

  29. tomingeorgia August 17th, 2012 at 7:37 pm

Hd to do something. Was that Martin who hit a dinger?

  30. yankeefeminista August 17th, 2012 at 7:37 pm

Time for a rain delay. Someone’s going to get hurt.

  31. ac1 August 17th, 2012 at 7:37 pm

here comes the stall tactics by the sox.
the rain should move out by 10 anyway no?
so worst case a long delay?

  32. UnKnown August 17th, 2012 at 7:37 pm

Radar shows this thing will get played tonight. It just comes down to is it worth bringing out the tarp or just playing through this shower right now

  33. jackamir August 17th, 2012 at 7:44 pm

Shutdown Dry inning is needed Phil, PLEASE……

It amazes me how the whiners whine after every loss…What trite drek…and continue to plead for Melky…Get a grip..Get a reason..Get something..Girardi is a very good manager, unfortunately he can’t go 162-0…

  35. UnKnown August 17th, 2012 at 7:45 pm

    One dimensional tonight so far.

  40. kd August 17th, 2012 at 7:47 pm

tough play for hughes. should have gone to first

  41. waldo geraldo faldo August 17th, 2012 at 7:48 pm

It is the Red Sox so these things must happen.

Now it is Ciriaco who is batting 1.000 against Yanks

  42. jacksquat August 17th, 2012 at 7:48 pm

I never understood how a pitcher can do that.

  43. tomingeorgia August 17th, 2012 at 7:48 pm

    jackamir,
Not hard staying a Yankee fan if it’s in your genes. Look around this blog; the people are from all over the nation, as well as abroad.

  44. UnKnown August 17th, 2012 at 7:48 pm

Pete’s extra bases is destroying this one for number of comments tonight so far. That never happens.

Although I will say negativity brings comments and the Sux have nothing but negativity surrounding them right now.

  45. Captain Clutch August 17th, 2012 at 7:50 pm

I guess it’s not possible for the Yanks to have an error free game against the Sox. It seems like half of their errors come against them. Hopefully it doesn’t cost them too many runs.

  46. jackamir August 17th, 2012 at 7:51 pm

Should have thrown it overhand, sidearm or 3/4 is always why Pitchers can’t make that play clean.

  47. Captain Clutch August 17th, 2012 at 7:52 pm

This Ciriaco scrub would be a hall of hamer if he only had to face the Yanks

  48. 4 NYY August 17th, 2012 at 7:53 pm

    Bad grip on the throw.

  49. jackamir August 17th, 2012 at 7:53 pm

Why can’t we get a shutdown inning after we score?

  50. Pauldanand August 17th, 2012 at 7:54 pm

where can I listen to the game on line live?

  51. NYY fan in NH August 17th, 2012 at 7:54 pm

I hate when this team gives away runs to the Sox. For some reason they play crap defense when they go against Boston.

  52. Tyler August 17th, 2012 at 7:55 pm

Still having trouble putting guys away… c’mon Phil

  53. ac1 August 17th, 2012 at 7:56 pm

phil has no one to blame here but himself…

  54. Captain Clutch August 17th, 2012 at 7:56 pm

  55. 4 NYY August 17th, 2012 at 7:56 pm

  59. NYY fan in NH August 17th, 2012 at 7:59 pm

it’s just frustrating that after all these years pampering Hughes that he still can’t put guys away 0-2. Nice job Hughes.. 4-3 now cause of the elf.

  63. NYY fan in NH August 17th, 2012 at 8:00 pm

he’s just terrible. It’s plain and simple!

  64. Don Vito A. Bellamo August 17th, 2012 at 8:00 pm

Hughes just sucks this year, plain and simple. Give him a 3 run lead and he gives up a 4 run inning, what a hack.

  65. Frozen Rope August 17th, 2012 at 8:00 pm

    What else is new phil?

  66. waldo geraldo faldo August 17th, 2012 at 8:01 pm

Phil Hughes has one secondary pitch. From start to start, his success is solely dependent on his fastball command.

I cannot wait until the Hughes era is over in NY.

  67. igotid88 August 17th, 2012 at 8:01 pm

Tough luck inning fir Hughes. Would have been 0 runs. But because of the botched dp it turns to 4

  68. Jeff in Canada August 17th, 2012 at 8:01 pm

    Too easy? Your fault yankeesfeminista.

  69. sunny615 August 17th, 2012 at 8:01 pm

    Trade Hughes away this winter.

  70. Captain Clutch August 17th, 2012 at 8:01 pm

Great job Hughes. At some point the Yanks have to realize this is what he is. He isn’t going to improve and they have to move on.

  71. ac1 August 17th, 2012 at 8:01 pm

again if hughes could just make a simple throw to second base, none of this would have happened…

  72. igotid88 August 17th, 2012 at 8:02 pm

    for

  73. UnKnown August 17th, 2012 at 8:03 pm

Now we’re getting some comments going.

Anyways this is why last night I said out of Nova, Phelps, and Hughes if I had to get rid of one it would be Hughes.

My patience is just over with him.

  74. DocTodd August 17th, 2012 at 8:03 pm

Can we trade Hughes to Pirates for AJ??

  75. NYY fan in NH August 17th, 2012 at 8:03 pm

Phil Hughes, the enigma…. shows you glimpses of being a good #3 starter, but more often than not, he’s barely a 5th starter.. Tired of this act!

  76. igotid88 August 17th, 2012 at 8:03 pm

Ac it might have been wet.

  77. Frozen Rope August 17th, 2012 at 8:04 pm

Where are all the hughes fan boys to point out the runs were unearned?

  78. igotid88 August 17th, 2012 at 8:04 pm

Now we gotta hope he has some Nova magic and get the win or no decision.

  79. ac1 August 17th, 2012 at 8:04 pm

If CC and Pettitte weren’t hurt, Phil would be in the bullpen by now.

    LMAO! Well done. (((applause))

  81. Captain Clutch August 17th, 2012 at 8:05 pm

If Hughes wasn’t a number 1 pick he wouldn’t be in the rotation. The only reason they keep giving him chance after chance and gurantee him a spot in the rotation is because he was picked so high. His stuff is average and he doesn’t have the stuff or command to be a good pitcher in the AL.

  82. ac1 August 17th, 2012 at 8:05 pm

Where are all the hughes fan boys to point out the runs were unearned?

    ____

They were unearned because Phil threw a DP into left field.

  83. waldo geraldo faldo August 17th, 2012 at 8:05 pm

Todd, I thought we were watching AJ on the hill tonight.

    Or in Pittsburgh.

  85. igotid88 August 17th, 2012 at 8:07 pm

And the part that’s messed up is that homerun was probably the only bad pitch he threw that inning. Unfortubate it came there. I had a feeling ped was going to hit it out.

  86. ac1 August 17th, 2012 at 8:07 pm

    yes….. or in pitt.

  87. igotid88 August 17th, 2012 at 8:07 pm

    Unfortunate

  88. Captain Clutch August 17th, 2012 at 8:08 pm

I am sure in the NL or on a garbage team with a big ballpark Hughes would pitch well but it isn’t going to happen here. Too bad he can’t be part of a package for Felix he would have a 3 era in that ballpark. When the Yanks move on he will pitch well with another team.

  89. ac1 August 17th, 2012 at 8:08 pm

  99. tomingeorgia August 17th, 2012 at 8:12 pm

  100. Frozen Rope August 17th, 2012 at 8:13 pm

Why don’t the yankees just put hughes in the pen and finish ruining him like they did with jobber?

  101. jackamir August 17th, 2012 at 8:13 pm

I have been a strong supporter of Phil for years but I have had enough..He needs to go west young man.. Put him in a trade for J. Upton.

  102. ac1 August 17th, 2012 at 8:13 pm

    its not about the score…
    it wont end 4-3.
Its about hughes continuing to not put hitters away, and giving up way too many homeruns.

  103. UnKnown August 17th, 2012 at 8:14 pm

I think now it’s to the point where even if Phil has a few good starts in a row you’re always fearful for of ineffective Hughes to show up at anytime.

This makes it tough to have faith that he will ever be the pitcher he was supposed to be.

  104. ac1 August 17th, 2012 at 8:14 pm

Why don’t the yankees just put hughes in the pen and finish ruining him like they did with jobber?

Not Hughes. Hughes has done this all to himself.

    =======================

I hope they never trade him to Angels. N.L. for sure. He prolly would thrive.

  110. Captain Clutch August 17th, 2012 at 8:18 pm

It really gets old watching Hughes get beat up. He has a fastball and some below average off speed pitches. When his location isn’t perfect he gets hammered. His stuff isn’t good enough to be a consistent good starter in the AL and you also can’t continue to throw fastball after fastball to major league hitters.

  111. yankeefeminista August 17th, 2012 at 8:18 pm

    Good job, Phil.

  112. UnKnown August 17th, 2012 at 8:19 pm

Good news is the Tigers officially shut V. Martinez down for the year. That could’ve been a dynamite 3-4-5.

  113. Jeff in Canada August 17th, 2012 at 8:20 pm

    Haha, NESN: “Saltalmachier, Pedroier”

They should get together with Waldman and Sterling. Nover, Jobber, Kuroder, Garcier. Fielding erra’s…

  114. igotid88 August 17th, 2012 at 8:22 pm

This is like the game against Minnesotaa earlier this year. He pitched well most of the game. But that 1 inning with the Nunez error and the unnecessary shift. 4 unearned runs scored that inning.

  115. waldo geraldo faldo August 17th, 2012 at 8:22 pm

This team stares at so many strike 3 pitches right down the middle, it is insane.

  116. jackamir August 17th, 2012 at 8:22 pm

Towers would take Hughes, Nunez and David Adams+ 1 prospect for J. Upton.

  117. Captain Clutch August 17th, 2012 at 8:22 pm

Of course the offense goes to sleep after they give up the lead.

  118. igotid88 August 17th, 2012 at 8:23 pm

Hughes hasn’t been getting that call. Lucky he’s been getting swinging strikeouts

  119. jacksquat August 17th, 2012 at 8:23 pm

    igotid88 August 17th, 2012 at 8:01 pm
Tough luck inning fir Hughes. Would have been 0 runs. But because of the botched dp it turns to 4

I hope you mean the dp ball that Hughes threw into CF.

  120. jmills August 17th, 2012 at 8:23 pm

Jeff in Canada – you don’t like little god’s team in Hogtown?

  121. ac1 August 17th, 2012 at 8:24 pm

This is like the game against Minnesotaa earlier this year. He pitched well most of the game. But that 1 inning with the Nunez error and the unnecessary shift. 4 unearned runs scored that inning.

    ________

    Phil made the error himself.
when the pitcher makes the error it shouldnt be an unearned run.

  123. UnKnown August 17th, 2012 at 8:24 pm

Talk about a scoring decision that doesn’t make sense. If a pitcher makes an error the runs scored go unearned. He is the one who made the error himself he should also get charged with the runs scoring.

  124. tomingeorgia August 17th, 2012 at 8:25 pm

    Yankeefem,
Final score: 10-6, NYY. We’re going to get to this guy, then shred the bullpen. Faith!

  128. UnKnown August 17th, 2012 at 8:27 pm

  132. 4 NYY August 17th, 2012 at 8:31 pm

sux always have hitters. They will be better next year. They’ll dump some players and get pitching in return. We better be prepared.

  133. waldo geraldo faldo August 17th, 2012 at 8:31 pm

It would be cool if the Yankees offense awakes from its post 3 solo homer slumber.

  134. jacksquat August 17th, 2012 at 8:32 pm

Notice how Michael Kay continues Ichiro.. Ichiro Suzuki, since he came to the Yankees.

In all the years the Yanks faced the Mariners with Ichiro on the Mariners, he always just called him Ichiro.

  141. Captain Clutch August 17th, 2012 at 8:35 pm

Can the Yanks buy a hit now? They have to forget about the score and go back to getting guys on base. It seems like a mental thing with them.

This team takes more pitches right down the middle than any organization I have ever seen. Then, Ichiro swings at the pitch in the dirt. It is not like the pitches are on the corners or outside the strike zone. They are literally right down the middle.

    Just sayin’

  243. JM August 17th, 2012 at 9:19 pm

YankeesWFAN Nix 2-out RBI single means Yanks are now batting .361 (30-for-83) with 2 outs and RISP in August. Big turnaround from first hf of season.

  251. djsunyc August 17th, 2012 at 9:22 pm

this is what our season comes down to – it’s quite simple:

we pitch well, our offense is good enough to win.

  264. UnKnown August 17th, 2012 at 9:28 pm

I think Swish would be fairly reasonable in contract talks too.

I mean the guy loves it here but of course wants to get paid what he should as well, so its a little bit of a catch 22.

interesting fact: on may 19th the Orioles were 13 games over .500. they have played 3 game under .500 in the 3 months since.

its not them playing great, its just the division being down this year.

  328. MG August 17th, 2012 at 10:30 pm

Hughes was charged with 0 earned runs because Pedroia’s dinger was with 2 out after his error.

There is no way to declare he gave up 4 earned runs in 7 innings because, if he doesn’t make the error Pedroia doesn’t hit with runners on.

So you can say gave up the dinger, that is 1 run, but without the error it is a leadoff HR with no one on base, period-that would be the fair appraisal of his outing tonight, 1 earned run in 7 innings.

  332. LGY August 17th, 2012 at 10:39 pm

Instead of arguing about whether the runs should be earned or unearned and demonstrating how flawed ERA is, just look at other statistics that more accurately calculate how Hughes pitched tonight.

For example, Fangraphs added live FIP and xFIP caluclations to each pitcher’s profile page this season.

  333. PittsburghYankeeFan August 17th, 2012 at 10:42 pm

    Nice win.

    Wow, the Sox really suck.

Anyone agree with these trade ideas to make the Sox better in 2013? Anyone believe any GM would take any of the proposed deals (read down a bit in the post)?

    I didn’t think so.

Why would anyone in their right mind take the contracts of Beckett and Lackey?

in 1973, Catfish Hunter, still with Oakland gave up 39 homeruns but only 105 (95 earned)

He posted a 3.34 ERA for the season. There had to be a ton of solo shots there.

Also not that it makes a difference. But the next batter after the error he gave up a groundball with a slower runner would have been a double play. And who’s to say ped would have hit a solo shot. He gave up 2 hits outside of that inning and both were singles.

    ————————–

Was Catfish a flyball pitcher? How many pitches did he have in his arsenal and did he throw them all every game? Parks for the most part were bigger. Wasn’t left center field 470* feet in old Yankee Stadium? I’m not certain but i think more players are hitting home runs than in those days. Usually guys Pedroia’s size in those days weren’t hitting double digit home runs.

  356. Nick in SF August 17th, 2012 at 11:45 pm

Guys like Pedroia played most of their games in the Shire.

  357. jacksquat August 17th, 2012 at 11:46 pm

In regards to Catfish, I was just pointing out that his hr rate wasn’t that high, and he limited baserunners better than Hughes which means in the long run fewer guys on base when the home runs are hit.

A 1.8 hr/9 rate and a good ERA is not sustainable, unless you have exceptional h/9 and bb/9 rates. And you always have to worry about the “one bad inning”, one blow that really hurts.

The problem with Hughes other than homeruns is he’s been unlucky with batted balls. He’s given up quite a bit of soft hits. And he doesn’t walk many batters. He has the lowest bb/9 in the staff or the starters. What we saw today is really what he is. 7ip 4h 1bb.

  360. LGY August 18th, 2012 at 12:13 am

    ————————————

By how the hits came about. Like infield singles, bloop hits, bleeders through the infielders. Batters reaching out on a pitch a foot outside. A batter getting fooled on a pitch but still manages to poke it past the fielders. There was hit against the shift earlier this year. And if you watch every game. The announcers would say it. Some would post it on here. I’m not talking about the home runs or doubles off the wall or hard hit singles.
