Yankee lineup: Jeter back at SS
After two games at DH, Derek Jeter is back at short tonight. Here’s the lineup that will face Josh Beckett:
Derek Jeter SS
Nick Swisher 1B
Robinson Cano 2B
Curtis Granderson CF
Eric Chavez 3B
Raul Ibanez LF
Russell Martin C
Ichiro Suzuki RF
Casey McGhee DH

Really surprised by the Angels’ pitching. You wouldn’t expect Weaver, Haren, Wilson and Greinke to get lit up by a lineup like the Rays in four successive nights. Most teams would kill just to have one of them. Maybe the Rays are just a much better team that I gave them credit for?
This must be the road trip to end all road trips. They get victimized by King Felix for a perfect game and then come from 8-0 behind to win 10-8 against Wilson last night. Crazy game.
Like our left-hander lineup a lot more than our right. Least we don’t have to put Jones in the four hole.
Four lhh in a row! Joe must be in a cold sweat!
man that lineup looks a lot better with chavez in it.
“I can’t imagine Hughes or Joba will have much trade value this winter but that Hughes for Choo trade Sherman suggests would be awesome. ”
yea I would do that no question….but I think Hughes may have more trade value that it seems.
He won 18 games in 2010 and is on pace to win 16 this year….now pitcher wins doesn’t mean everything but when he healthy he’s pretty good….and he pitches in one of the worst parks and divisions in the game for his style…..sorta like folks figure Headley will perform better outside Petco….you could say the same with Hughes out of YS and the AL east.
I think some NL team could view him as a frontline guy in the right park…..if you turn some of his homers into fly balls then he’s a different guy….still only 26 years old.
AndrewMarchand Now, Joba is out early throwing the football.
Hitters have been seeing his pitches like a football lately!
The Yanks have been better vs LHP than RHP for the last couple of years….but with Chavez and Ibanez bigger parts of the offense now….with Tex and ARod hurting….it’s the opposite now…..the lineup looks and functions much better against RHP right now than lefties.
Four lhh in a row! Joe must be in a cold sweat!
Five if you include Swisher.
Just here cooking and musicing it up avec la radio – 14 year old girl about to be the youngest to swim lake Ontario – great feel good story for charity.
blake-
I was just thinking about that earlier. We use to hope and pray we would be facing a lefty so we could go to down on opposing teams. Now… its like oh crap were facing a lefty… that means no chavez.
What happens if Chavez stays hot by the time arod comes back? Does Arod play DH and chavez go to third? I would have to think that ibanez is going to lose a lot more time once arod comes back. I just hope we can find ibanez some meaningful at bats come october.. bc the dude has a flare for the dramatic.
Tabbert – nice problem to have my friend
Jmills- Yup. lol.
Its pretty crazy to think about deep and talented this team is. Yes, we have flaws like every other team… but this is still a special group. Honestly… I feel like we should put up a good amount of runs and win with ease without AROD or TEX in the lineup. Think about that.
Trabbert, I know, you guys have had your share of injuries, but to all of baseball’s acknowledgement,….you plow on.
“Now… its like oh crap were facing a lefty… that means no chavez.”
pretty much….problem is that Cano hasn’t handled lefties as well this year (.242 .292 .346 .638) and Jones hasn’t really done his job against them for the most part either ( .212. 274 .455 .729).
So with Chavez and Ibanez, and now Ichiro being big parts of the lineup and with Tex and Arod being out they really don’t have a lot of punch right now vs LHP……
hate to say it because I don’t want stir up trouble but the Yanks sure could use this slash vs LHP in their lineup right now…..344 /.394 /.544 /.938……especially when it comes with an overall of .310 /.363 /.451 /.814 in the 2nd half.
Blake, in the end its a bit of a crapshoot, but at least you guys are in. Look at the Angels, Baltimore and Mark Belanger might beat them out.
jmills,
yea I’ll take it however we can get it….I still think your Jays are on the rise…I know folks have been saying that for awhile….but they really got devastated with injuries this year and not much you can do about that…..
What’s up with the Sox? Text message calling for a mtg with ownership re: Valentine came from Gonzalez’s cell phone. But Shoppach was the one behind it?
Chavez is a better defensive third baseman than ARod at this point, so Chavy should get some starts at third after ARod returns.
Blake, thanks , but am enjoying baseball same as ever;however….we do hold thangs to look forward to! In the meantime, I am pulling for a big party in October for Lohud bloggers.
Most of the MLF seems to have gone underground, so the slash line shouldn’t be stirring up too much trouble.
I think Chavy and Alex will split time at 3B and DH when Alex cimes back in whatever ratio Joe thinks will keep them healthiest.
There was nothing wrong with A-Rod’s defense this season.
Angels getting hammered again….wow.
Nick in SF – watched BULLITT,……….again last night – Steve made everyone on the set promise to say he did all his own driving,…he didn’t . McQueen was wrecking too many cars, and they had to have a competant stand in.
Montero now 1 for his last 18 ABs
And he is batting around .269 for August – with just 1 BB in 50ish ABs
Plus – how does he still have only 16 doubles – if he is such a special hitter – he should be getting those regardless of whether he is belting homeruns (which he is not) or not – – – –
Scioscia has to take the fall if the Angels miss the playoffs right? There is no way Moreno will be happy after finally paying for a big bat.
Bullit is good, but I prefer The Great Escape. Did he do his own motorcycle stunts?

@Mariners: #Mariners starting pitchers are 15-6 with a 2.64 ERA (57 ER, 194.0 IP), 137 K’s and 21 quality starts over their last 28 G.
Halos, not so much;)
Baby steps…
“Scioscia has to take the fall if the Angels miss the playoffs right? There is no way Moreno will be happy after finally paying for a big bat.”
Nah but he should….hes been a faux-genius for years.
Blake-
I would think they have to do some move, even just to do one for the sake of change…. they don’t really have many movable players. Trout/Truombo/Weaver aren’t and shouldn’t go anywhere. The rest of the guys are bad contracts.
The rally monkey might be the scapegoat.
Nick, it looks like he didn’t. Rosy, I hope your team wins a World Series in the not too distant future for your betterment!
Basically the Angels rotation has underperformed big time exceot for weaver an wilson at times…….and their lineup isnt particularly deep…..and their pen kinda sucks…..its a top heavy team but still they have no business missing the playoffs with that rotation
I wouldn’t count the angels out just yet. They never really had a great record due to their really bad start. Now they are just dealing with the same type of funk the yankees just got out of. They are like 2 back from a playoff spot. One would assume they will get hot again and the wins will start coming. Their biggest problem is that they have to deal with the rangers and the unexpected A’s. I honestly don’t think their lineup is as good as many people hype it to be. Trumbo has cooled down a bit, and outside of trout and pujols… that lineup isn’t too much to write home about. Still think they should be okay.
Larry Rothschild does not get enough credit. All throughout baseball you hear about big name pitchers having massive slumps, not pitching up to their ability, and not just the big name pitchers. We see a lot of rotations out there with guys WAY under performing. What about the Yanks? Nope. Sure… Nova and Hughes have their hiccups but that is mostly because of youth. Even then our young guys don’t struggle for too many outings in a row. I don’t think its a fluke that the yankees have had so much success from within the last two years when it comes to their pitching.
Personally Im hoping the Angels fire Scocisa and he comes to Boston and small balls it….that would be fun.
Rothschild has been light years better than Eiland, World Series or not.
Rothschild is one of the best in the business.
Tabbert, I agree with you, its hardly a fluke.
Who would have predicted the Angels troubles even with the most productive rookie in years. They still have time to turn it around, but man ..
Thanks, jmills.
It will be good for the city, when it happens, for sure.
In the meantime, “Felixing” is all the rage. Even “the other Montero” joined in the fun yesterday

I hope to be “Felixing” today if any my horses come in #LongacresMileAtEmeraldDowns
I have mixed feelings about Rothschild.
I think he/they emphasize throwing hard/strikeouts, and the changeup too much. Meanwhile the two seamer doesn’t seem to be worth much to them and the split seems to be banned unless you arrived with one already. It took forever for them to give Phelps a shot, no doubt because he doesn’t throw hard, even though he always had excellent command and at least 4 pitches.
I wan’t to see hughes pitch the rest of the year before i’m willing to trade him.
He said he threw more changeups, more to rh hitters, wich he never does in his last start.
He said he was stubborn all this time,so let’s see if he has changed.
Looking at the brooks pitchfx site, hughes threw 106 pitches,29 changeups wich is more than 25%.
Phenominal amount for hughes.
Compass, it was just that nasty bad luck you didn’t win prior. Keep on keeping on !
Baltimore won and the Rays are about to. Good thing we have our ace on the mound tonight.
Tabbert – I agree, Rothschild is such a quiet guy, he doesn’t get the credit he deserves.
if angels miss playoffs it will be a team/organizational effort. can’t understand their rotation losing to rays this weekend. makes no sense.
The Rays are hitting and pitching. The division race is far from over.
hope its not a beanball war tonite…beckett is nuts but ciriaco should not be this comfortable.
Mr. mick,
If a DH gets hurt and is removed from the game, can he be replaced with another DH, or does the pitcher have to hit?
Mick, thanks for the Van Morrison post – have Nashville DVD/CD. Can’t believe he’s still so lucid. A couple of contacts have related he is very rude, and ny sister saw him drunk out of his mind in the 70′ ( useless. )
Sorry, ” my.” Dang blackberry.

I agree, I predict good things for Hughes if he continues this….I still don’t understand why he doesn’t throw a split….
Surprised to hear that this will be the first time Granderson has ever batted clean up for the Yankees.
I would think with the power the guy has that it would have happened at least once before.
Lineup also isn’t the same without Tex obviously. Really stinks that he couldn’t play in this series especially because he has been torching the Sux this year.
I don’t get it, but let me try and understand. If Hughes has a great season, we keep him; while if Hughes has has a bad season he trade him? For what? Another AAA starter? We won’t get much out of Hughes if his numbers get worse. So there really is no point in trading him. Either try him in the bullpen or send him to the minors.

Xxxx
Arod catches everything he gets to. He just doesn’t move like he used to. Chavy has better range and was a serial gold glove winner in his prime.
As Blake said, they will both get a lot of starts to keep them both fresh, and hopefully, healthy.
Pirates and Cards in the 17th inning at 2-2. As a baseball fan, gotta appreciate the Pirates’ pluckiness this year. A great story.
Montero now 1 for his last 20 – - – - OPS either at .700 or below
wax poetics about special hitter, he is finally adjusting, and all the other excuses made not really about Montero, but about yourself – - –
randy will be here soon to tell you how great montero is when he catches on day road games against canadian pitchers.
YS, too funny! Beyond Jenkins, Hiller and Reggie Cleveland, there aint too much more mon ami LMAO!
What are Montero’s season numbers Vs LHP and in the 2nd half? Kinda good…..small samples are funny things and samples of any kind are inconclusive with rookies…..Mike Trout….bad last year…..MVP this year.
ryan dempster is from b.c.
Ryan Dempster is from B.C., and can’t even get into Canada! Vancouver snobs
Monteroooooo-oooooo-ooooooo
