Yankees salvage a series win in Cleveland

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Aug 26, 2012 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Yankees managed to get something positive out of this road trip. With a 4-2 win this afternoon, the Yankees took two out of three in Cleveland before heading home. The trip was a bad one overall — the Yankees lost four out of six — but the Yankees will go home with a four-game lead in the division. A three-run second inning was the key, with the first three Yankees batters reaching base and eventually coming around to score that inning. Ichiro Suzuki and Nick Swisher each had RBI singles, and Curtis Granderson added a solo homer later in the game. Starter Freddy Garcia got through 4.2 scoreless, but when he couldn’t get the last out in the fifth, the Indians capitalized with at two-run single that kept Garcia from a decision. Boone Logan, Dave Robertson and Rafael Soriano handled the relief work without allowing a run.

If the Dodgers can add $260 million to their payroll in one trade — and close to a half-billion dollars in four months — is there a limit to their spending?

“Somewhere, I suppose,” Chairman Mark Walter said Saturday.

And where might that limit be?

“I haven’t found it yet,” President Stan Kasten said. “I’ll let you know when we get there.”

    Scary.

    Hey YF and JF!,

Good to see you both around.

    YF,

If you see our mutual friend JAP, tell him that he is sorely missed.

    JF,

They are acting like the Yankees would have ten years ago… They have improved their team inmensely, but I think it is very short sighted too… They gave up plenty of talent and at the same time they got hooked with a couple of pretty expensive long term deals, one that could pay out (Gonzales) and one very ugly one (Crawford).. I guess they are going all in, will it pay out?

  6. bruceb August 26th, 2012 at 4:26 pm

Didn’t expect this series to be such a struggle for the offense but at least they achieved the minimum requirement so I’ll take it. Just hope a few more of the bats come alive when we return home.

The Mets have placed Scott Hairston and Andres Torres on waivers, a major league source told Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com. The Mets have said that they want to be competitive in the month of September but may be willing to part with Hairston as they sit with a 58-69 record heading into this afternoon’s game against the Astros.

The club has yet to have contract extension talks with Hairston, though he recently indicated that he would be open to the discussion. The 32-year-old has a slash line of .272/.312/.512 with 14 homers in 104 games this season for the Mets.

Hairston is also hitting>.300 vs lefties, something Jones has been paid to do, but isn’t getting it done.

    Put in a claim?

  8. mick August 26th, 2012 at 4:31 pm

a key play was the Stewart bunt.

  9. tomingeorgia August 26th, 2012 at 4:33 pm

    YT,
Hairston would never get to us.

  10. luis August 26th, 2012 at 4:34 pm

    Trader,

Absolutely… He would give us a lot of flexibility as well

  11. Yankee Trader August 26th, 2012 at 4:35 pm

    Luis-

The Red Sox were pretty crafty with Crawford. Had they put him on the DL prior to August, they wouldn’t have been able to pass him thru waivers until he was off.

They knew he was probably going to need surgery for some time now.

Dodgers getting some lefty bats along with Ethier, to balance out the righty bats-Kemp, Ellis, Ramirez.

MLBTR’s calculated their payroll close to 189M for 2013. That’s 11M over the 178M LT for 2013 at 17.5% premium.

    It’s only $$$$$

  12. mick August 26th, 2012 at 4:36 pm

why did joe bat stewart 9th when he bats martin between chavez and ibanez?
it worked with that bunt and jete and swish coming thru…just sayin’

like ichi 9th but would leave the leftys together vs a righty, so can live with 8th

  13. mick August 26th, 2012 at 4:38 pm

scherzer leads the majors with 195 K’s…Wow, and he’s a Yankee killer.

  14. Yankee Trader August 26th, 2012 at 4:41 pm

Gonzalez hit a homer last night and already has driven in a run in the bottom of the 1st vs Miami against lefty Buehrle.

  15. luis August 26th, 2012 at 4:46 pm

    Trader,

I think the sux were brilliant on this trade… And it was a brave stance as well… They assumed that they needed to rebuild and rid themselves from a bunch of very bad contracts and some malcontent players.. On top of it the got two of the best prospects from LA… Excellent move.

On LA… Yeah they got much better, that lineup is AL scary now (Hanley, Kemp, Ethier, Gonzo et al) and their rotation has three very good pitchers as well, they don’t need Buckett to be the ace, just a number three starter in that big park, I think he will do fine. The problem is how long can they ride this wave?.. If what you say is accurate, they are already over the luxury tax without raises… It is only dollars as you say, I guess they are committed to become a force to recon with…

I know is ciclical but the NL is becoming stronger and the AL seems to be getting weaker

  16. Yankee Trader August 26th, 2012 at 4:46 pm

    I’ve got to go.

Actually Mick- when I looked last year at Scherzer’s stats in YS, his ERA I believe was over 5.0, and I really thought the Yankees would beat him in YS in game 2 of the ALCS that Sunday.

He shut the Yankees down, and that was the game Nova suffered an elbow injury.

    Until later.

Good win BUT, 2 for 7 with RISP, 3 runs in the 2nd and only one therafter, and Soriano makes it interesting!

  17. Jerkface August 26th, 2012 at 4:47 pm

Gonzalez hit a homer last night and already has driven in a run in the bottom of the 1st vs Miami against lefty Buehrle.

Did people think A-gon sucks? He has been hitting like .350 for the past month. July 1st to now: .341 .373 .577 .950

  18. Jerkface August 26th, 2012 at 4:50 pm

They did their calculations on on per year salary, not AAV though, so their ‘taxed’ payroll may be smaller.

    Mick-

    The ALDS Sorry

  20. Yankee Trader August 26th, 2012 at 4:55 pm

    JF-

When I looked at what the Dodgers have coming off the books, I thought their 40 man salary might be less too. They can dump Blanton, Victorino, League and Choate.

Gonzalez was a great pickup. I wonder if they could have done the deal for just Gonzalez and Beckett, without giving up their best prospect?

  21. Yankee Trader August 26th, 2012 at 4:57 pm

Outta here now. Have a great evening.

  22. blake August 26th, 2012 at 4:59 pm

“And where might that limit be?”

it’s going to be 189 million dollars in 2014 just like the Yankees……I don’t care who bought them I can’t see them going over that consistently the way the penalties are……they have revenues but they aren’t what the Yankees are……

The Dodgers essentially had more “cap space” than the Yankees do…..they just ate up a bunch of it…..it’s going to be very interesting to see how they operate as they near that luxury tax.

  23. luis August 26th, 2012 at 4:59 pm

Have a good one Trader! I am out too. Later everyone

  24. blake August 26th, 2012 at 5:01 pm

big win today…..a much needed win…..

It was nice to see Girardi manage with urgency and get Freddy out of there when he did and then kudos to the bullpen for making the lead stick…..

4 game lead now heading to Toronto when the Rays are playing Texas…..if the Yanks take care of business against another team they should beat then hopefully theyll have the lead back to 5 or 6 by Wednesday.

  25. blake August 26th, 2012 at 5:03 pm

“Gonzalez was a great pickup. I wonder if they could have done the deal for just Gonzalez and Beckett, without giving up their best prospect?”

if the Dodgers wanted to spend money they should have just waited til this winter and signed Josh Hamilton…..he could likely be signed for less than Gonzalez has left….he’s a better player than Gonzalez when he’s healthy…..and you don’t have to take on two albatross contracts and trade 2 good pitching prospects either……

dumb deal for the Dodgers…..a deal that could end in disaster in a couple of years if they don’t win….they need to win the WS now for it to be worthwhile most likely.

  26. Nick in SF August 26th, 2012 at 5:06 pm

“fran_cervelli Sunday….good day to play baseball,I hope everybody have a amazing day”

Cisco went 0-3 with two walks and a run scored as the ESY beat the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs 6-2. Cory Wade went two innings for the save.

  27. Tyler August 26th, 2012 at 5:10 pm

It’s great to see Scherzer doing so well… his family had a really terrible tragedy earlier in the summer which was pretty well documented. The guy deserves all the good results he’s getting. I don’t know if he will ever be consistent because of his delivery but his stuff is definitely electric.

  28. blake August 26th, 2012 at 5:11 pm

Vin Scully announced hes coming back next year….not surprised….how.can he quit now?…

  29. tomingeorgia August 26th, 2012 at 5:11 pm

    blake,
I don’t think you should write of Beckett quite so soon. Maybe Mattingly can get him squared away. And if Crawford ever gets healthy, those NL West outfields are designed for his strengths. We shall see. Did they need Punto?

  30. blake August 26th, 2012 at 5:14 pm

    Tyler,

Didnt you go to high school with Max or something? Hes got unreal stuff….raw stuff wise hes not far behind Verlander ….its just mechanically he cant repeat consistently….he scares me though in a playoff game because he can just dominate if you catch him on the wrong day.

  31. PittsburghYankeeFan August 26th, 2012 at 5:14 pm

    Sorry.

Anyone who thinks this trade was brilliant for the Sox is mistaken.

Can those who think this was brilliant sketch out exactly how they are going to “rebuild” and be competitive in a 3 year time frame, let alone in 2013?

    I just don’t see it.

Welcome to the bottom of the AL East, Boston. Get used to it. Come find us, yea, in 2016 or so. Even then it will be a long road to climb.

  32. blake August 26th, 2012 at 5:16 pm

    Tom,

Maybe….its a lot of risk to take on….Beckett’s velocity is down about 2 mph across the board and Crawford needs TJS……point is that its a lot of riak and money to take on just to get Gonzalez

  33. Tyler August 26th, 2012 at 5:17 pm

    blake-

He was in my brother’s graduating class… 5 years older than me. He hides the ball amazingly well. Played with my bro in high school and he threw about 90-91. That was enough with his deception to dominate. At Mizzou, they fixed his mechanics some (believe it or not they used to be even worse) and all of a sudden that 90 mph fastball turned into 95. I was really hoping the Yanks could land him in the Granderson trade.

  34. PittsburghYankeeFan August 26th, 2012 at 5:18 pm

It’s LA. Bright, sunny, media less obsessed and depressed, fans less intense.

All 4 of those guys will do just fine with the scenery change.

    Look at AJ and Pittsburgh.

The Dodgers may do just fine. Who knows? Kuroda may sign with them in 2013 looking for a title.

  35. blake August 26th, 2012 at 5:19 pm

“Anyone who thinks this trade was brilliant for the Sox is mistaken.”

I dont know if its brilliant so much as necessary …..they get to reboot and whike its true that rebuilding wont be easy they have appeased their fanbase who pretty much had grown to loath the team…….

  36. blake August 26th, 2012 at 5:20 pm

“The Dodgers may do just fine. Who knows? Kuroda may sign with them in 2013 looking for a title.”

Dont say that…..its definitely a worry. ….Yanks need to put the full court press on Kuroda as tons of teams are gonna want him…especially if he is looking for another 1 year deal.

  37. blake August 26th, 2012 at 5:23 pm

    Tyler,

Its amazing how some guys can add velo in college and later as they mature….Scherzer has legit #1 stuff…..repeating a delivery though is the x factor for.lots of guys….

  38. Nick in SF August 26th, 2012 at 5:27 pm

Kuroda already took slightly less (reportedly) to come to the Yankees. I doubt he’s going to be shopping himself to a bunch of teams. My totally unsubstantiated hunch is that he’ll be choosing between another year with the NYY and going back to Japan.

  39. Tyler August 26th, 2012 at 5:28 pm

    blake-

That definitely is the x factor… just look at Betances. Verlander/Scherzer is a scary 1-2 power combo. Max always had a great arm as he was actually the varsity qb his freshman/sophomore year before concentrating on baseball. Being the varsity qb as an underclassman is almost unheard of at our school.

  40. blake August 26th, 2012 at 5:30 pm

“My totally unsubstantiated hunch is that he’ll be choosing between another year with the NYY and going back to Japan.”

hopefully….but I know he liked the Dodgers too….and the main reason he left was because they weren’t any good and because they were broke…..neither of those things are the case now. I do think a lot of teams will call him though……hopefully he’s enjoyed his time in NY enough to come back ……might help if the Yanks actually score him some runs down the stretch!
