Miley named IL Manager of the Year

This one had to be an easy choice for voters in the International League. Despite playing all of their games on the road this season, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees are one win away from a division title, and for that, manager Dave Miley has been named the league’s Manager of the Year for the second time in six years. None of the Yankees Triple-A players were named to the International League postseason all-star team. Here’s the announcement from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees Manager Dave Miley has been named the 2012 International League Manager of the year. The award is voted upon by International League’s managers, coaches, media and club representatives. This is the second time that Miley has received “Manager of the Year” honors having previously won the award in 2007, his first season with the SWB Yankees.

Despite having to play its entire season without a true home stadium while PNC Field in Moosic, Pennsylvania undergoes a $43.3 million reconstruction project, the Yankees have posted the second best record in the International League at 81-47 and are 12 games over .500 both in “home” games (40-28) and road games (41-29).

“It is really difficult to adequately describe the job Dave Miley has done in the 2012 season,” said New York Yankees Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations Mark Newman. “Dave has met the extraordinary challenge of leading a team playing 144 games on the road with extraordinary success. No one could be more deserving of this award.”

Miley previously won the award after the 2007 season, the first of four consecutive North Division titles for the Yankees. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is poised to win its fifth division title in six years as a Yankees affiliate with a “magic number” of one with six games left in the regular season.

“It has always been about the coaches and players surrounding me,” said Miley. “Just like it has been every year, once again this season, the Yankees have given me great coaches to work with and great players to manage.”

Miley picked up the 1,600th win of his minor league managerial career with a win over the Buffalo Bisons on April 13th and won his 500th game as the Yankees Triple-A Manager on May 12th with a win over the Durham Bulls. In 21 seasons as a minor league manager he has compiled a 1,678 – 1,271 record. He has been the only manager in SWB Yankees history and is seven seasons as the manager of the Yankees top affiliate he is 563-430. Including 2012, Miley has posted a winning record in 19 of his 21 seasons on the bench.

“What Dave has done with his team would be impressive in a normal situation,” said SWB Yankees President and General Manager Rob Crain. “With the challenges he and his staff encountered this year, his efforts have been nothing short of remarkable.”

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as a franchise is now third all-time in the International League with five managers of the year in its 24 year history. Miley leads the SWB skippers with two and is joined by Lee Elia (1992), Marc Bombard (2002) and John Russell (2006) as the other Scranton/Wilkes-Barre managers to take top honors.

Its great that SWB is winning the title…..however Id much rather them have just one hitter that could help in the big leagues.

this butthead guy (who just happened to show up right after they lost last night) is really annoying.

did this NOT answer your question or do you have a reading disability?
“Ys Guy August 28th, 2012 at 12:01 pm
getting the lead into the hands of the closer and letting him finish the game was a very solid gameplan and it worked to that point. Sori has closed out what, 90% if his save opportunities?

you can second guess every single decision a manager makes as many on here do, but the result that soriano took the mound with a 2 run lead was a very good outcome.

unfortunately, this one fell into the wrong 10% because sori wasnt able to close it out.

did you post your objection to him pulling phelps at the point it happened?”

you did the same thing last night asking questions i answered the dogging me about not answering them.

I ASK YOU PLEASE TO NOT ADDRESS ME AGAIN, thank you.

Congratulations to Dave Miley! Job well done. And then some!

  4. Jerkface August 28th, 2012 at 12:19 pm

Girardi PH Jones for Ibanez leading off the 6th. WAY to early for that move.

Ibanez barely gets on base against righties and is awful vs lefties, if you’re going to platoon guys you have to do it right and with a lefty on the mound you don’t leave Ibanez in to face him.

  5. Ys Guy August 28th, 2012 at 12:22 pm

excellent job Dave Miley! i think both Miley and Tony Franklin at trenton do a very good job. although there are some problems with player development i always think these young players show up at yankee stadium understanding what is expected of them and they always seem to fit in very well. that reflects well on both of these managers.

  6. blake August 28th, 2012 at 12:24 pm

The problem is that Jones cant hit anybody anymore…..which has really hurt what Joe can do……his decline vs LHP is really hurting……

  7. Ys Guy August 28th, 2012 at 12:24 pm

also consider that miley had to deal with managing a ‘barnstorming’ team playing all their games on the road.

  8. Tidrow August 28th, 2012 at 12:25 pm

Why is Scranton so devoid of young players? Seems like youngest prospects there are always in mid 20s. Is it against their policy to have actual young prospects on the roster?

  9. blake August 28th, 2012 at 12:25 pm

If Theo would eat most of the money…..should they get Soriano…..i know i know I hate the thought of him hacking at sliders in the LH batters nox too…..but hes having a better year than Andrew and they are really struggling vs LHP….its gonna be worse with Tex out….

  10. Yankee Trader August 28th, 2012 at 12:26 pm

Scott Hairston was claimed. Maybe the Yankees put in the claim and are working with their cross town media rivals on a deal now for the right handed bat who, unlike Smiley Jones, can actually hit a lefty this year.

    Not holding my breath! :)

Time to add Nunez 9/1, for some speed.

Actually it’s ButtSmacker, I ask you to get it right in the future.

I posted a very sound reasoning as to why it was a poor move to pull Phelps when Joe did. I apologize for voicing an opinion based on factual information. And for the 100th time, since you seem to lack reading comprehension skills, I agree this move did not lose the game. Soriano lost the game, he has been great this year, it obviously happens to even to the best closers. Soriano being the main reason the Yankees lost the game last night does not change the fact that it was a poor move to pull Phelps with Joe did. Girardi has a track record of having a poor feeling for when to appropriately pull his starter.

“Why is Scranton so devoid of young players? Seems like youngest prospects there are always in mid 20s. Is it against their policy to have actual young prospects on the roster?”

They just didnt do a great job drafting bats there for awhile…..they are doing much better now but its going to take awhile for the system to catch up in that regard……hopefully 2 years from now SWB will be loaded.

  13. Ys Guy August 28th, 2012 at 12:30 pm

hairston has really done well vs. lefties this year, with
some big hits for the mets. he really got exposed when they tried to play him every day, though.

  14. blake August 28th, 2012 at 12:32 pm

Vs Lefties without Tex and Alex this lineup is prett toothless…..

Anybody still think Montero woukd have no role on this team?

  15. Shame Spencer August 28th, 2012 at 12:32 pm

Can someone update me on the time table for Tex? Is there one? Sorry I’m being lazy lol

Chris Dickerson is playing well. He’s a lefty but is hitting both lefties and righties well, albeit all at AAA.
Has speed and can play all 3 OF positions.

Be nice to have them both in the lineup vs lhp.

  20. trisha - true pinstriped blue August 28th, 2012 at 12:35 pm

I don’t know whether Girardi was asked the question about why he pulled Phelps, or if so, what he said, but I just have the feeling that Phelps is being used as a fill-in and nothing more and that the intention is to have him in the bullpen for the postseason, if he’s in there at all. It is obvious that Phelps was brought up as bullpen help and that his being in the rotation was only because of Nova going down. I don’t have any problem with that whatsoever because it appears that the Yankees see value in him and hopefully will give him a tryout for next year’s rotation. So maybe Joe isn’t trying to stretch him out at all but just win games and didn’t feel any urgency to let Phelps continue. JMO. Time will tell whether I am right or wrong on this one.

    ***********

I consider the timing of getting Pearce almost uncanny and wondered at the time whether the Yanks had knowledge of Tex possibly not being at full speed. In any event, a very timely acquisition since Pearce can play first.

  21. Ys Guy August 28th, 2012 at 12:36 pm

    Shame-

Teixeira out 1-2 weeks with calf strain

August 28, 2012 by Brien Jackson

Mark Teixeira left last night’s game in the fifth inning after suffering a calf strain in the middle of an at bat the inning prior. He was sent off for an MRI after being diagnosed with a calf strain, and the tests revealed a Grade I strain. Tex will miss at least 1-2 weeks with the injury, adding another body to the pile of injuries the Yankees have had to deal with this season. The Yankees just traded for a first baseman in Steve Pearce, so they could put Tex on the DL to make room on the 25 man roster for him, or they could cast off whomever they were planning on removing anyway and play a man down until rosters expand on Saturday

  24. LGY August 28th, 2012 at 12:38 pm

Cashman clearly saw a need for a Rh bat as he tried to get Carlos Lee.

Was McGehee really the best he could do?

    “last 30 days: martin .238, montero: .233″

Montero is hitting .336 with a .911 OPS vs LHP…..thats over 100 BA points and about 200 OPS poibts better than Jones

  27. blake August 28th, 2012 at 12:41 pm

“I consider the timing of getting Pearce almost uncanny and wondered at the time whether the Yanks had knowledge of Tex possibly not being at full speed. In any event, a very timely acquisition since Pearce can play first.

I think its more of an indictment on how bad Jones has been.

  28. blake August 28th, 2012 at 12:42 pm

“Was McGehee really the best he could do?”

Good question…..cashman never likes the prices

  29. Yankee Trader August 28th, 2012 at 12:44 pm

If the Yankees can’t get a bat or bullpen arm thru waivers consider bring up these players September 1st:

Chis Dickerson-hitting well and plays good OF defense.

Eduardo Nunez-Started hitting and team needs a late inning base stealing threat as well as someone who can actually go 1st to 3rd on a hit to RF

Mark Montgomery-Give the AA strikeout righty/closer reliever a chance.

  30. trisha - true pinstriped blue August 28th, 2012 at 12:45 pm

“I think its more of an indictment on how bad Jones has been.”

Whatever it is there seems to be a little kismet there because he can play 1st. That allows Swisher to remain in riight, where he’s needed, and it allows Pearce to play at a position where he is both comfortable and familiar. So it means having nobody out of place. That is, if they choose to use Pearce!

  31. Shame Spencer August 28th, 2012 at 12:46 pm

Jones has been one of the biggest disappointments this season.. which is crazy coming from a person that would have rather him fall off a cliff than be on this team in the first place two seasons ago.

I’ve cited Swish’s BA being one of the highest on the team as one of the pleasant surprises of the season… just not sure if it’s a good or bad one lol. Definitely a surprise though.

  32. Yankee Trader August 28th, 2012 at 12:46 pm

    Blake-

Could the wrist still be bothering Tex. He’s had only 3 homers all of this month after returning the first few days in August after resting the wrist sprain.

  33. Shame Spencer August 28th, 2012 at 12:48 pm

Are they going to try MeGehee (giggidy giggidy..) at 1B? We’re gonna see a lot of mix and matchery. I’m going on record as saying if it was up to Team Greedy, we’d have 4 OFers on the field at all times :D

When is Alex gonna be back!!!

  34. trisha - true pinstriped blue August 28th, 2012 at 12:48 pm

Every team is beat up at this time of year, and nobody is running away with anything. The good news for the Yanks is that they have two important pieces – Arod and Pettitte – coming back, hopefully sooner rather than later. Nova should be returning also. Not sure how that will play out, but we’ll soon find out.

  35. Villa Nova-Ya August 28th, 2012 at 12:48 pm

    blake -

I was going to say the same thing – more to do with Jones not doing well than anything to do with Tex.

As far as McGehee being the best Cashman could do – well, at the time it probably was (cost-wise) and the Yankees have been very lucky in getting players who have done well in prior years to come to NY for a specific role and do well. McGehee’s role was very specific – and I think it was more or less, go to bat and run into a pitch for a HR every now and then. Not big expectations.

  36. Shame Spencer August 28th, 2012 at 12:49 pm

Could the wrist still be bothering Tex. He’s had only 3 homers all of this month after returning the first few days in August after resting the wrist sprain.

Wrists are so tricky.. I am so curious to see how Crawford comes back from both a major wrist injury and TJ surgery! Still can’t believe the Dodgers took that contract on…

  37. trisha - true pinstriped blue August 28th, 2012 at 12:50 pm

Which reminds me – I never checked to see how the hayseed made out last night.

  40. Ys Guy August 28th, 2012 at 12:51 pm

montero has been ok and he could help us out with an ab here and there vs. lefties, but that ship has sailed and its not like he’s lighting it up.

he’ll be fine in the long run, i just dont think he would be much of an upgrade on this team this year.

scott hairston who’s got a .958 ops and can fill in in the OF would be more of a help to this team.

  41. blake August 28th, 2012 at 12:52 pm

“Which reminds me – I never checked to see how the hayseed made out last night.”

Lost…gave up 3 runs in 5 and 2/3 and the Dodgers lost 10-0

  42. Yankee Trader August 28th, 2012 at 12:53 pm

Maybe had A-Rod not broken his wrist, the Yankees would have been able to pass him thru waivers this month and the Dodgers would have put in a claim. :)

    ————————-

Cashman only picked him up because at the time Tex was nursing the wrist injury and it didn’t cost him anything. Same with the Carlos Lee interest – the reason Lee declined the trade was because Cashman told him upfront that they were looking for a part time player.

  47. Ys Guy August 28th, 2012 at 12:56 pm

yt, im sure arod was put on waivers and cleared. they have done it the past few years im pretty sure. nobody is going to claim that contract because they know the yankees would not pull him back.

  48. Chip August 28th, 2012 at 12:57 pm

I wouldn’t mind seeing Scott Hairston fill the Andruw Jones role next season.

  49. igotid88 August 28th, 2012 at 12:57 pm

I know A-ROD’S contract is huge. But I would get rid of Tex’s before Alex.

  50. Yankee Trader August 28th, 2012 at 12:57 pm

    Beckett at Coors:

    5.2 innings 7 hits, 3 runs, 3 BB, 6 SO, 1 homer 108 pitches.

Plus he struck out both times ab

  51. trisha - true pinstriped blue August 28th, 2012 at 12:58 pm

Thanks for the information on Beckett. I guess it could have been worse.

  52. DONNYBROOK August 28th, 2012 at 12:58 pm

For now, I’d stick with Swish at 1B, Ichiro in RF, and platoon Ibanez and Pearce in LF. Jones would get an occcasional PH, and rots on the pine other than that.

  53. Ys Guy August 28th, 2012 at 1:01 pm

igotid88, c’mon, tex is better on both offense and defense and is much more productive, younger and makes significantly less money than arod and his contract runs out a year before arod’s.

you may not be crazy about the tex contract, but if you could offload either one you’d have to jump at the chance to get out from under arod’s.

  54. blake August 28th, 2012 at 1:02 pm

  57. blake August 28th, 2012 at 1:05 pm

Yea this is typical Swisher production …..hes OPSd over .820 in 6 of the last 7 seasons (the only one he didnt was the year with thr White Sox) .

  58. Yankee Trader August 28th, 2012 at 1:06 pm

A-Rod’s AAV is 27.5M/year and if he’s relatively healthy next season he’
s getting the 6M homerun performance bonus-that counts too, so 33.5M toward the 2013 season ending figures to calculate what the Yankee will owe at 42.5% over 178M.

  59. Ys Guy August 28th, 2012 at 1:06 pm

arod has 5 years $121M left after this year. tex has 4 years $90M left.

arod’s could go up another $12M if he passed aaron and bonds but i didnt count that b/c i dont think he will.

    A. Jones appears to have slowed down considerably in the last month or so.
Either his fighting an injury that has not yet gone public or his body has given out in the middle of the season. Something is wrong and I think acquiring these players lately that HIT from the right side is somehow associated to A. Jones.

when tex’s contract ends in 4 years, he will still be younger than arod is now (36/37)

  68. Ys Guy August 28th, 2012 at 1:17 pm

arod has to average between 23 and 24 hrs/year to catch bonds. all the way to age 42. its possible, but i think he’d have to have one big comeback season of being healthy and putting up 35 or so. his declining # of games played per year is what is hampering him the most, he’s got to do better than 100 games per year to have a chance.

  69. Warning Track Power August 28th, 2012 at 1:17 pm

I used to think Alex was a lock to break the HR record….its just growing harder and harder to see it happening because he just cant stay on the field….this last injury was flukely….but its just tough to see 120 more homers…..still can do it but thats 4 more years of 30…..or 6 of 20…..still possible but hes got to start staying on the field

Two of the years he hit 219 and 249. His BA for the Ys was 288 two years ago and dropped to 260 last year. Now it’s back up.

Love the guy. Never trust what anyone does in a contract year. The next year seems to drop off (anecdotal). I checked with Chad and he said it was okay for me to have this opinion of players in their contract year. So all’s well….

    ——-

So was two years ago a contract year?

Look at his OPS+ and how consistent he’s been and you’ll see this has nothing to do with a contract year. Who cares about slight variations in batting average?

  78. blake August 28th, 2012 at 1:30 pm

What about Corey Hart? Can play RF and 1B and is under contract for 10 million in 2013. Hitting .270 with 23 homers and is hitting .304 with a .898 OPS vs LHP.

I doubt hed clear waivers though if he were even put on.

  79. Ys Guy August 28th, 2012 at 1:30 pm

imagine if the yankees were in 3rd place, maybe 4 games behind tampa and a game behind baltimore. if arod was playing and not on the dl and he was hitting .276 with 20 hr and 65 rbi right now (approximately where he’d be had he not broken his hand).

the booing at NYS would be intense and constant and getting worse by the day.

he’s 37 and has 5 years left on that contract. he’s alot more likely to decline further than to go back to his former #’s. it would be very ugly.

boston chased beckett after less than 1 year of the fans turning on him. imagine 5 years.

one of 3 things can prevent this. 1) he gets alot better the next few years, 2) the yankees stay in first place pretty much constantly or 3) arod has a monster postseason or two and gets another ring.

  80. blake August 28th, 2012 at 1:31 pm

I don’t know if it’s been discussed here but did you guys see the report that the Dodgers asked the Yanks if they’d be willing to part with Sabathia and Tex? LA is really turning crazy moneywise.

  84. blake August 28th, 2012 at 1:38 pm

    Tyler,

    Yea its been discussed…..

  85. Ys Guy August 28th, 2012 at 1:42 pm

im pretty sure la is going to negotiate a new tv deal this offseason i believe. a big postseason will push the money on that deal way up. and it also means that no matter what happens, they have a big chunk of change coming their way.

they are also feeling the heat in their own market from the angels. they needed to get out from under the cloud that past ownership left them in.

  86. Ys Guy August 28th, 2012 at 1:45 pm

btw i’m rooting for arod to do #3, have a big postseason this year and lead the yankees to another ring. it would take all the heat off him next year no matter what happens and in a more relaxed environment he might have that big comeback year he needs to put it all back on track.

  87. blake August 28th, 2012 at 1:48 pm

interested to see tonights lineup against the lefty…..you can’t hit Granderson behind Cano.

    I’d go:

    Ichiro (LF)
    Martin (C)
    Jeter (SS)
    Cano (2B)
    Swisher (1B)
    Granderson (CF)
    blah (RF)

    blah (DH)

  99. luis August 28th, 2012 at 2:01 pm

I would have made that deal in a NY second, but I would have asked them to take Arod’s contract as well. That’s some serious dough out of the books. Granted the next two FA classes are uninspiring to put it mildy, and no ace caliber pitcher aside of Greinke. But it would give us financial flexibility, not to mention that we get rid of the evil twin part of those deals. It would be a bold move and one I could get behind with. And if we in turn get some talent as well, then I would be ecstatic.

Not happening though, I don’t think the FO has the “cojones” to make such a deal and declare a full fledged rebuilding process.

  100. Shame Spencer August 28th, 2012 at 2:02 pm

I was really hoping taking on that salary would hinder the Dodger’s pursuit of Cano but I forgot about that tv deal until they mentioned it on one of the telecasts. …I just have this feeling they push hard for him. I don’t like this feeling.

Worst of it is the Dodgers haven’t been paying any luxury tax over the past few seasons (I don’t think so anyway), so they can blow past $189 in 2014 and not take a hit the way the Yankees would.

  101. bruceb August 28th, 2012 at 2:03 pm

Why our nails are going to be beaten to the quick come the end of September.

RAB: You know what would be nice? If the Yankees actually bothered to blow some games open from time to time. Nineteen of their 74 wins have been by five runs or more (25.7%) compared to 34 of 97 last year (35.1%) and 35 of 95 the year before that (36.8%).

With so many platoon players in the lineup, I can’t see too many blowouts on the horizon either.

  102. blake August 28th, 2012 at 2:04 pm

“It all falls apart if blah tests positive for synthetic testosterone.”

Blah is close to being out of the big leagues so he thought it was eorth the risk…..

I dont wanna be without Tex for 2 weeks if he can be back in 1…..they need him back ASAP

  104. luis August 28th, 2012 at 2:09 pm

If Blah can play 3 positions at the same time, then the Dodgers might be enticed to trade Kemp for him? How many players can play 3 positions at the same time? That’s worth a lot.

  105. Ys Guy August 28th, 2012 at 2:09 pm

while it would be tempting, i would not have done a cc/tex/arod deal with la. the yankees are in first place and doing that would be surrendering this year and next at the least. while it might have been better in the long run, the yankees arent’ going to give up a season of two or three.

the red socks had already become a last place team with no prospects of recovery with that roster.

  106. DONNYBROOK August 28th, 2012 at 2:13 pm

I don’t count on TEX being back inna week. Playing a man short for 4 games, based on that gamble is foolish. Better the Yanks play with 25, And TEX returns at full strength.

  107. luis August 28th, 2012 at 2:14 pm

    Y’s

No doubt that the Yankees won’t do it, even if it means a much better long term standing. ( Which I happen to think is the case ) As you say, no way they declare an open rebuilding process. But no doubt that making such a move would dramatically shorten the inevitable downward period ahead.

  108. Ys Guy August 28th, 2012 at 2:15 pm

the pressure on the socks to sign a big money deal with hamilton swisher or grienke is going to be intense this offseason. idk if any of those 3 will be worth what they will get and i dont think any of them turn the socks into a contender.

Pressure there is no pressure to sign those guys this off season. A number of Sox fans want nothing to do with Hamilton because of his age and issues

  110. bruceb August 28th, 2012 at 2:19 pm

Bitten to the quick, I should say.

  111. Ys Guy August 28th, 2012 at 2:21 pm

there is always pressure on teams to sign the shiny new player that’s the hot fa. and the socks fans, having gone now 4 years w/o a playoff win, will be pushing for whoever is out there, especially since they spent no money last offseason and have moved so much off the books this season, not only the 3 dodgers but youk and dice k.

while there are always sane fans who see the folly of chasing the big fish, thats not usually the majority. the majority want new players signed NOW!

and fans are pissed as hell as management already anyway.

  112. luis August 28th, 2012 at 2:23 pm

    Odds,

Spot on…. They are going to rebuild, and Hamilton, Greinke are not on their plans. After this season ends, they are going to be a in a great drafting position and are going to be allowed to spend more on the IFA as well.

  113. Ys Guy August 28th, 2012 at 2:24 pm

there has also been alot of talk in beantown about how much money the ownership group has spent on their soccer team. now if they dont spend again this offseason, it will all be about how they took money from the socks to spend on soccer.

  114. Ys Guy August 28th, 2012 at 2:27 pm

it comes down to this, do you really think the socks’ ownership is going to try to ask fans to be patient while they rebuild and not expect to contend again next season? i dont. i think they will spend some of that money they saved to try to compete next season.

i dont think a rebuild is any more doable in boston than it is in the bronx.

  115. luis August 28th, 2012 at 2:27 pm

  117. Ys Guy August 28th, 2012 at 2:32 pm

for almost all of my life the orioles were our primary rivals. 78 was an abberation. then when the yanks absolutely sucked the blue jays were the big thing but we couldnt compete with them. when we got it back together it was the orioles again.

then the red socks revival happened and it became yanks-red socks 24/7/365.

i hearby declare that period over. the main rival to the yankees are now the tampa bay rays.

the orioles are trying hard to get back up there, but i dont think they have the roster or the prospects to get there in the next few years.

the socks and jays are also-rans.

“Yes I think they could try to get Upton… The question is, do they have the pieces to do so?… I don’t think so”

I dunno….probably depends on if they’ll touch their big league roster for him just like the Yankees…..neither team really has the prospects in the upper levels to pull off a prospects deal for him I don’t think…..

  123. blake August 28th, 2012 at 2:41 pm

I think to have any shot at Upton the Yankees will have to probably include either Nova or Phelps…..probably either Granderson or Gardner….and probably another good prospect…..and that may not even be enough if a team like Texas really decides they want him.

I said before the package should be centered around Phelps, and if necessary throw Hughes in. 3 way deal may require the other 2 teams each getting an SP included. With each start Phelps makes, his value grows. Should he come up Aces in the Playoffs, his value really skyrockets.

No shot. They’re going to be major players. I hope it comes back to bite them in the ass, of course… but it didn’t with Crawford :/

  137. austinmac August 28th, 2012 at 2:54 pm

I don’t think the Yankees will take on significant money for 2013. They need to cut $40 million from the budget(to comply with their plan) by 2014. I think they will go halfway their next year so it doesn’t look quite so draconian in 2014.

As a memeber of Team Greedy I think it is bad business and bad baseball. Winning makes money while losing does not. If it were my business, I wouldn’t want to take that risk. A losing Yankee team will lose far more in income than they can save.

I think of no Swisher next year, and believe absent replacing him with a player of like ability, the team will be worse. Pretty simple, huh? His production will not be replaced from the dumpster.

Here are the problems for Boston:

    1. The free agent market sucks.
    2. Their system is still light.

Yes they could use their new found financial wiggle room to sign Hamilton and Greinke – but would you trust either of those personalities long term dealing with Boston? I wouldn’t. So who does that leave:

    Napoli
    Marcum
    Swisher
    Victorino
    Soria

None of those guys are difference makers. So yes, here’s hoping Boston goes nuts and spends their money on either guys who are ticking bombs or overpaying for role players to be stars.

    Hello again

I’d pass in Ichiro. This year has gotten me much less interested in part-time senior citizens.

Yanks have $ 53.25 Million coming off the books in terms of free agents. another $ 30 M potential savings in options that don’t have to be picked up.

It means there are a ton and I mean a TON of possibilities in shaping the 2013 roster. I just hope they don’t re-up everyone and guarantee another 2-3 years of an aging roster, especially in terms of position players.

  153. austinmac August 28th, 2012 at 3:18 pm

    Blake,

Ichiro looks like Gardner with less speed. His base stealing hasn’t been very good. He will likely continue his decline. Gardner would be my choice of the two, if healthy. I understand your point as one of the corner outfielders must have a good bat. Can’t agree with you more on that.

My main point is for a team to avoid declining they must replace the old with the new and replace prduction with production. Adding an aging outfielder to be a starter is foolish in the long and short term.

  154. blake August 28th, 2012 at 3:18 pm

“I would try to re-sign Ichiro to a low cost deal and trade Gardner”

Depends on what you’re getting for Gardner…….one thing to keep in mind about those two is that Ichiro is much more durable and from a business standpoint he is a bigger fan draw.

So if they could back Ichiro cheaply and actually get value for Gardner in a trade then maybe thats preferable ……Id rather have Gardner if both are healthy…..but hes hardly ever healthy and Ichiro +trade haul for Gardner might be > Gardner alone.

    ——————–

I prefer Ichiro’s durability, and I’ve yet to see Ichiro go through one of the stretches that Brett seems to have every year where he’s swinging a wet noodle up there.

I also trust Ichiro to at least give me a productive out in a big spot.

I don’t think you’re getting much for Gardner. He’s a good defensive OF but he’s 30 and his best trait are his legs. Maybe they could do something with the Nationals along the lines of Gardner for Mike Morse?

Go with Ichiro, Granderson, Morse in the OF?

  161. blake August 28th, 2012 at 3:22 pm

    mac,

In a vacuum if I’m just picking between Gardner and Ichiro then yea I’d rather have Gardner ….but the problem is that Gardner is hurt all the time and I just don’t know if you can count on him anymore…..if they could get value for him and then re-sign Ichiro to a one year deal then maybe that’s better as a whole….you’d have to see what return you’d be able to get though…..

  172. austinmac August 28th, 2012 at 3:27 pm

    Chip,

I don’t see Ichiro making productive outs. Yes, he doesn’t strike out much but he doesn’t give himself up and usually doesn’t drive the ball to the outfield enough to move runners.

Blake, I believe commented on Ichiro’s fan appeal. I wonder how long that will last with a .290 OBP for the year.

    ————————-

    Nope I don’t – here’s why:

Without Upton Arizona has: Parra, Young, Kubel – Gardner’s not starting over any of them

In their rotation Arizona has: Kennedy, Cahill, Hudson, Bauer and Skaggs – so they really don’t need more young pitching.

The MiL infielders (CoJo, Adams, Nunez) aren’t going to be stars – and the best of the bunch regressed badly this year and the MiL OFs are all very far away.

  182. MTU August 28th, 2012 at 3:32 pm

  185. MTU August 28th, 2012 at 3:36 pm

    Chip-

nice try but I don’t buy that.

1st- GGBG is better than acouple of those O’ers, is cheap, and can also be a a great 4th OF’er

2nd- hughs is popbaly better than several of those starters and Hudson is coming off a major injury.

3rd- guys like Nunez, Adams, or Cojo have real value.

4h- Austin or william are probably better OF prospects than anything D’backs have in their system.

I probably wouldn’t even come cose on that deal but the D’Backs would have to be nuts to turn that down.

Only team who could offer more might be the Rangers.

  186. blake August 28th, 2012 at 3:37 pm

He hasn’t had a great year but he’s a young 21 year old… I’d give him another year and be patient but I can see your idea there. I just really with the Yanks had somebody in there system who could become an Allen Craig type hitter… unheralded but extremely productive.

  189. blake August 28th, 2012 at 3:40 pm

“In their rotation Arizona has: Kennedy, Cahill, Hudson, Bauer and Skaggs – so they really don’t need more young pitching.”

IPK has had a down year, Cahill’s velo is way down….Hudson just had TJS….and Bauer and Skaggs are rookies…..they could use another good starter…..everybody could….though young pitching isn’t really a need. I think Hughes is more a guy they might would have interest in to be honest…….

  190. blake August 28th, 2012 at 3:41 pm

    Choo is another interesting target.

Point is get someone good for the future.

  193. Tyler August 28th, 2012 at 3:42 pm

It seems like a pretty terrible idea to trade pitching with Beane…. the guy just replaces young promising starters (like Cahill) with even younger, more promising starters (like Parker).

  194. blake August 28th, 2012 at 3:43 pm

Think its a coincidence the O’s are adding LHP (Saunders and Wolf)….nope…they play the Yanks a ton in September.

  195. Tyler August 28th, 2012 at 3:43 pm

  215. Ys Guy August 28th, 2012 at 3:56 pm

ichiro is a late january-early february decision. he’s not a starter.

there are 5 weeks of pennant race then a month of baseball post season yet to be played.

then come the decisions on offering arbitration and the exclusive negotiating period, which the yankees never pay any attention to. then the big free agent decisions have to be made along with the big trades.

after all that you see what the roster looks like and you start filling in with guys like ichiro.

  216. Tyler August 28th, 2012 at 3:57 pm

I’m from St. Louis so I know all about that lol. But really I wouldn’t want Rasmus at this point. He’s very streaky… when he’s on he looks like a future HOF’er, when he’s off he looks like a AA player. Sounds like a good chunk of the Yanks lineup eh?

    1st and 3rd, 1 out or 1 in,no runners on 1st, 2 out…..take your pick. I take the former.

better yet runner on 1st, 2 out, no run scored.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Thanks for your write-up. I would also love to comment that the very first thing you will need to do is determine if you really need repairing credit. To do that you have got to get your hands on a replica of your credit profile. That should really not be difficult, because the government necessitates that you are allowed to have one free copy of your real credit report each year. You just have to check with the right folks. You can either read the website with the Federal Trade Commission and also contact one of the major credit agencies specifically.

The bad news? Amazon still isn’t a terribly profitable company. After eking out $97 million in profit last quarter, it reported $82 million in net income this time around. There’s a reason CEO Jeff Bezos had to reassure investors this month that his company is not, in fact, a charitable organization. And that isn’t expected to turn around in the immediate future: Its guidance for the second quarter calls for operating income somewhere between a gain of $10 million and a loss of $340 million. Yes, there’s a real possibility Amazon could lose a third of a billion dollars for the quarter.
