Moore vs. Yankees

TIME/TV: 7:10 p.m., YES Network and MLB Network

WEATHER: Pretty warm down here. Not a bad night to have the roof. And the AC.

UMPIRES: HP Bob Davidson, 1B Brian Gorman, 2B Todd Tichenor, 3B Tony Randazzo

IN CLOSING: The Yankees are 26-17 in series finales and have won 11 of their last 14 finales on the road. They are 3-4 in games when trying to avoid a sweep in 2012.

AVOID THE BROOM: The Yankees are looking to avoid being swept for the fifth time this season, which would surpass their total from last year. All four of their previous sweeps have come on the road. They?are looking to avoid being swept by the Rays for the second time this season and third time in their last four series in St. Petersburg.

UNLUCKY SEVEN: The Yankees have failed to score more than seven runs in any of their past 20 games. Earlier this season — from June 9 through July 4 — they went 24 consecutive games without scoring at least seven runs. Those are two of the franchise’s three longest such stretches since 1997. They also went 26 games without scoring more than seven runs in 2001.

UPDATE, 7:33 p.m.: Predictably, the Rays use a sac bunt to manufacture a first-inning run. It’s now 1-0 Rays.

UPDATE, 8:17 p.m.: Guess Alex didn’t get any balls in the dirt during his rehab assignment. His knowing-when-to-send-runners instinct is off, but he’s just doubled in a run to tie the game at 1.

UPDATE, 8:18 p.m.: Now Russell Martin with a two-run double.

UPDATE, 8:37 p.m.: Jeter’s third hit of the game is a two-out double in the fifth.

UPDATE, 8:58 p.m.: Two-out rally in the fifth has the game tied at 3 on Zobrist’s two-run triple. Seems fitting that the Yankees offense is going to have to get this thing done. Can’t lean on Kuroda for this one.

UPDATE, 9:06 p.m.: Go-ahead homer for Martin who has three RBI tonight and has twice put the Yankees in front.

UPDATE, 9:30 p.m.: Terrible throw by Johnson and the Yankees get two runs out of it for a 6-4 lead in the seventh. Jeter wound up at second and stole third, putting the Yankees in position to score another run in this inning.

UPDATE, 9:48 p.m.: Huge play by Jeter to end the seventh. Huge.

Yikes, sorry about that. Had some things going wrong on my end and the game post was a half inning late. That’s my bad. Now feel free to discuss the Cano double play ball.

  2. jacksquat September 5th, 2012 at 7:18 pm

Hey, it’s a no bunting, no stealing, double play hitting team.

  3. yankeefeminista September 5th, 2012 at 7:19 pm

    Just win, baby-San!

  4. jacksquat September 5th, 2012 at 7:19 pm

Kuroda should handle this lineup with just his regular stuff.

  5. Triple Short of a Cycle September 5th, 2012 at 7:19 pm

Unless Kuroda throws 7 shutout innings it will be very tough to win tonight

  6. Triple Short of a Cycle September 5th, 2012 at 7:20 pm

asinine decision to rest Upton with a day off tomorrow. Madden taking a book out of Girardi’s

  7. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 5th, 2012 at 7:21 pm

I believe in bunting, and at this point I think any player who knows how to do it should employ it to move a runner along, especially if the player is slumping badly.

    Oh well.

  8. mick September 5th, 2012 at 7:21 pm

1st inning blues, 3 straight times?

  9. Triple Short of a Cycle September 5th, 2012 at 7:23 pm

so the Rays bunt but bunting is too good for us

  10. blake September 5th, 2012 at 7:24 pm

Shocking turn of events in the top of the 1st

  11. I Am Winning September 5th, 2012 at 7:25 pm

ARod is known as a great bunter. He no longer seems to be a high AVG, OBP, or SLG % batter, he should definitely employ the bunt if the situation hands itself. The issue is that a 2 run go ahead homer seems more enticing than a tie game.

  12. UnKnown September 5th, 2012 at 7:25 pm

Maddon loves trolling the Yanks. Laying down that bunt there.

The Trop is a Ghost Town tonight. Where are all the fans. Camden Yards who is also struggling with attendance is sold out for tomorrow’s game.

  13. tomingeorgia September 5th, 2012 at 7:25 pm

Tired of hearing “Taps” played all afternoon. How about “To the Colors”, if anybody understands what that is.

  14. mick September 5th, 2012 at 7:27 pm

arod would have been up 2nd tonite if i were managing..

  15. Captain Clutch September 5th, 2012 at 7:27 pm

I would rather have Martin batting 2nd so he can bunt every time jeter gets on base. Swisher is killing them in that spot. Swisher is either hot or extremely cold no inbetweens for him. Now he is getting all off speed pitches and has no idea what to do.

  16. mick September 5th, 2012 at 7:28 pm

    1st inning blues for hiro

  17. Triple Short of a Cycle September 5th, 2012 at 7:29 pm

    Game set and match.

  18. WMD September 5th, 2012 at 7:29 pm

    GAME OVER!

  19. Triple Short of a Cycle September 5th, 2012 at 7:29 pm

Madden bunts and gets the lead and we wait for the 3 run homer

  20. blake September 5th, 2012 at 7:29 pm

    So annoying.

  21. Captain Clutch September 5th, 2012 at 7:29 pm

I was just going to say I would pitch around longoria here. It makes absolutely no sense to pitch to their only major leaguer with 1st base open. Really really stupid.

  22. Madrugador September 5th, 2012 at 7:29 pm

and that is why Tampa is winning and the Yanks are losing.

  23. jacksquat September 5th, 2012 at 7:29 pm

Wow, look at that, a run because of a bunt.

    Maddon is mocking Girardi.

  24. rr212 September 5th, 2012 at 7:30 pm

hahaha. The sad thing is that it probably really is. I love Girardi’s arrogance and the way he enables this team to continue w/ their swing for the fences approach.

  25. WMD September 5th, 2012 at 7:30 pm

yanks losing and o’s & rays winning. shocking development

  26. Niblick September 5th, 2012 at 7:30 pm

That didn’t take long. Baltimore’s winning; the Yanks are losing. By the weekend, hope for a wild card will be but a distant memory.

  27. Triple Short of a Cycle September 5th, 2012 at 7:30 pm

    awesome managing job by Joe

  28. theREALkevin September 5th, 2012 at 7:31 pm

Maddon is a much better manager than Girardi. That’s no secret.

  29. Captain Clutch September 5th, 2012 at 7:31 pm

Even if the yanks bunted cano or arod would never get a a big hit. The Yankees don’t hit with risp or get big 2 out hits.

  30. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 5th, 2012 at 7:31 pm

Wouldn’t it be great if Girardi just said that about bunting for public consumption and actually called for a bunt once in a while? I doubt he did that because he wouldn’t want to look like a liar or look like his guys were defying him.

  31. mick September 5th, 2012 at 7:32 pm

girardi has lost his mind…why did he have to say anything?

  32. austinmac September 5th, 2012 at 7:33 pm

The difference is their hitter went the other way with a RISP. I wish Piniella was the hitting coach.

  33. fantasygame101 September 5th, 2012 at 7:33 pm

no moving of the runners. 1-0 deficit. Fundamental is lacking

  34. mick September 5th, 2012 at 7:33 pm

girardi doesn’t comment on anything but has to throw klong under the bus?

sweet lou just about told girardi to loosen up….he would at a time like this.

  35. WMD September 5th, 2012 at 7:34 pm

can’t be. just too much talent not to win the division. c’mon, the o’s and rays are scrubs compared to all-stars on this yankee roster

  36. mick September 5th, 2012 at 7:34 pm

Lou: “That’s what I would do if I were the Mgr.”

  37. Captain Clutch September 5th, 2012 at 7:35 pm

A good manager like maddon or Washington would NEVER let the opposing teams best hitter beat them in that spot. Girardi really is a bad manager and continues to let this crap happen. He used to let Cabrera beat them on every game.

  38. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 5th, 2012 at 7:35 pm

They’re all swinging for the fences.

    Oh dear.

  39. jacksquat September 5th, 2012 at 7:35 pm

Martin almost to the Martin Line.

  40. mick September 5th, 2012 at 7:35 pm

a part of me wants to see this blow up just to see what Hal will do.

  41. mick September 5th, 2012 at 7:36 pm

    This aint softball.

  42. WMD September 5th, 2012 at 7:36 pm

    nice 3-1 swing there russ

  43. theREALkevin September 5th, 2012 at 7:37 pm

Martin swings at a pitch basically in the dirt on a 1-0 count, and then can’t do anything with a 3-1 count later in the AB.

Against a pitcher like Matt Moore, I think any more than 3 runs tonight would be a miracle.

  44. MG September 5th, 2012 at 7:37 pm

I almost never complain about anything but Girardi has gone off the deep end about moving runners over.

First he throws his hitting coach under a bus…

Then he tells Maddon the Yankees won’t bunt to move a runner over…

Then Jeter leads off with a hit and Swish, who is in a bad slump, not only doesn’t bunt but K’s looking really bad…

Then, of course, Robby hits a 2 hopper for a DP…

He could have easily used that opportunity to create some doubt in Maddon’s head, moved Jeter over and given Cano and Arod opportunities to knock in a run…

Instead, he makes himself look like an even more stubborn, petulant idiot…

  45. TheStraw September 5th, 2012 at 7:37 pm

    Same old approach.

  46. longtimefan September 5th, 2012 at 7:38 pm

So far so good this line up in getting the job done, lol

  47. WMD September 5th, 2012 at 7:38 pm

    real confidence inspiring there

  48. mick September 5th, 2012 at 7:38 pm

    Joe G is being exposed.
    The honeymoon is over.

  49. GhettoBlaster September 5th, 2012 at 7:38 pm

    Granderson strikes out!! SHOCKER!!

  50. Captain Clutch September 5th, 2012 at 7:38 pm

The yanks will be happy to just score 1 run tonight and not get shut out. Girardi knows how bad the offense has been how can you let longoria beat you?? The offense is brutal.

  51. Triple Short of a Cycle September 5th, 2012 at 7:39 pm

They’re all swinging for the fences.

    Hitting doesn’t matter remember

  52. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 5th, 2012 at 7:39 pm

I’ve been a huge supporter of Girardi but I wouldn’t mind seeing Sweet Lou at the helm. I just believe he’d get so much more out of his players.

  53. joeman September 5th, 2012 at 7:39 pm

    joeman September 3rd, 2012 at 9:13 am
I’m calling it 1-2 and if CC can’t get a W it could be a sweep

  54. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 5th, 2012 at 7:40 pm

    “Hitting doesn’t matter remember”

    You don’t matter. Remember.

  55. Tyler September 5th, 2012 at 7:41 pm

    trisha-

After watching Pinella in his last season as a Cub, I think he’s done as a manager. He was a good one though that’s for sure.

  56. TheStraw September 5th, 2012 at 7:41 pm

Kuroda knows how important these games are. Nice play.

  57. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 5th, 2012 at 7:42 pm

Tyler, I think he left managing more because he had losing teams in the Rays and the Cubs. I wonder if he’d consider managing again. Maybe he wouldn’t.

  58. Triple Short of a Cycle September 5th, 2012 at 7:42 pm

What happened to the delusional Pollyanna Yankees do everything right Trisha?

You know its getting bad when even she is panicking

  59. Tyler September 5th, 2012 at 7:42 pm

Russell Martin’s hitting 5th? Is that some type of cruel joke?

  60. ZMANINSJ September 5th, 2012 at 7:42 pm

This one has 4 – 0 written all over it.

  61. mick September 5th, 2012 at 7:42 pm

We don’t know what Hal will do if they implode he’s got to have some of his old man in him, right?
Lou would take this job if offered.

  62. ButtSmacker September 5th, 2012 at 7:42 pm

You know things are bad when you would rather watch Mariah Carrey sing a dumb pregame song for the Giants game then watch Granderson K for the millionth time.

  63. TheStraw September 5th, 2012 at 7:42 pm

Was it last year when the Yanks passed on Keppinger? He seems to be hitting the ball well this series.

  64. yankeefeminista September 5th, 2012 at 7:43 pm

Flores just hit a two run homer.

  65. Triple Short of a Cycle September 5th, 2012 at 7:43 pm

Holy crap the Blue Jays scored a run off the immortal Gonazlez

  66. Tyler September 5th, 2012 at 7:43 pm

    trisha-

I’d be shocked if he did but I guess you never know… he actually had a good year or two with the Cubs but I just don’t think he wants to put the time and effort into managing at his age. Plus, he really wasn’t doing that great of a job toward the end of his Cubs tenure.

  67. austinmac September 5th, 2012 at 7:43 pm

Keppinger has over 300 ABs and 20 Ks. Pretty old school.

  68. I Am Winning September 5th, 2012 at 7:43 pm

Buck Showalter and Lou would definitely have a thriving team if managing the Yankees. Lou would be an incredibly interesting manager to watch though. I would LOVE to have him as a manager. Not to say I dislike Girardi, but I would definitely prefer Lou. He is hard nosed, and he isn’t afraid to hurt anyone’s feelings. Whatever it takes to win.

  69. MG September 5th, 2012 at 7:43 pm

At least the Giants play tonight, it’s a good way to avert the eyes…

  70. theREALkevin September 5th, 2012 at 7:43 pm

And then there’s a hit & run by Maddon. He’s definitely needling Girardi.

  71. mick September 5th, 2012 at 7:44 pm

    nobody cares…

  72. ZMANINSJ September 5th, 2012 at 7:44 pm

A-Rod can’t reach the outfield at the plate. What an albatross for the next X years.

  73. nhyankeefan September 5th, 2012 at 7:44 pm

Why is Pearce in this lineup? An indictment on CASH man to have a 200 mill payroll and having to play a steve pearce.

  74. Tyler September 5th, 2012 at 7:44 pm

    TheStraw September 5th, 2012 at 7:42 pm
Was it last year when the Yanks passed on Keppinger? He seems to be hitting the ball well this series.
    ———————————————–

Keppinger is the type of player this team needs right now. He can play everywhere and is a contact hitter who fights every at bat.

  75. ButtSmacker September 5th, 2012 at 7:45 pm

    MG says:

Agreed, I need a mental break from the Yanks if just for 1 night

  76. austinmac September 5th, 2012 at 7:45 pm

Would Piniella think coming to the Yankees the next couple years is a good opportunity with the huge salary reduction coming?

  77. TheStraw September 5th, 2012 at 7:45 pm

    Granderson. Sigh.

  78. ButtSmacker September 5th, 2012 at 7:45 pm

    Sweet defense Grandy….

  79. Triple Short of a Cycle September 5th, 2012 at 7:45 pm

  80. mick September 5th, 2012 at 7:45 pm

    and he can bunt…

  81. GhettoBlaster September 5th, 2012 at 7:45 pm

wow UNCLE TOM GRANDERSON is really playing his way out of town.

Another botched flyball over his head. What a joke he is. Tigers were right to trade him.

  82. ZMANINSJ September 5th, 2012 at 7:46 pm

Sorry guys, I meant 8 – 0. This is the worst Yankee team since the early 90′s. I miss Kevin Maas right about now.

  83. Tyler September 5th, 2012 at 7:46 pm

Jose Lobaton…. if he can do it why can’t some of these Yankees do it?

  84. I Am Winning September 5th, 2012 at 7:46 pm

Granderson should probably listen to what Jones told him. DO NOT FOLLOW THE BALL. Estimate where it will go, then look, then make adjustments, THEN make the catch.

I thought he was an excellent defender for a while, but he is really showing that he is not very adequate out there.

  85. Captain Clutch September 5th, 2012 at 7:46 pm

Granderson is dreadful in reading balls. Catch the freakin ball and stop freezing as soon as it is hit. Any good CFer catches that ball. Unreal.

  86. Triple Short of a Cycle September 5th, 2012 at 7:46 pm

Our pitching has certainly showed up this last week

  87. Madrugador September 5th, 2012 at 7:47 pm

Don’t know what is going to happen in this game but seems like the same old stuff. Kind of sorry I bought those tickets to the Baltimore series this weekend.

  88. jacksquat September 5th, 2012 at 7:47 pm

Hate to say it, but Dickerson would have had that, because he doesn’t play too shallow.

  89. MG September 5th, 2012 at 7:47 pm

are we sure the 1991 or 1992 Yankees haven’t been somehow morphed into this team?

I can’t remember a talented Yankees team playing such bad baseball for so long, they are as tight as any team, in any sport, that I can ever remember.

  90. Tyler September 5th, 2012 at 7:47 pm

    mick-

I know that the Yanks haven’t spent as much these past couple offseasons but it really is amazing how bad this team is for 200 million dollars. I know injuries take a toll but you’d think there would be some sort of depth at that price.

  91. Robbie621 September 5th, 2012 at 7:47 pm

And now Kuroda can’t get Keppinger or Lobaton out. Just when you think it can’t get worse.

  92. theREALkevin September 5th, 2012 at 7:47 pm

Always chuckled when people would say that Granderson was an above average CF. Those defensive metrics aren’t always right, but they were about Grandy. To make matters worse he also has a mediocre arm out there.

  93. CTYankeeInNCExile September 5th, 2012 at 7:48 pm

This is like the garbage late-80s teams, a long slow fade. Except parking has gone up from $10 to $35 and a seat down low will set you back $65 instead of $10.

  94. Captain Clutch September 5th, 2012 at 7:48 pm

Hopefully Kuroda can get out of this otherwise it’s probably game over.

  95. Wang IS Taiwan September 5th, 2012 at 7:48 pm

Arrogance and sheer Girardi’s donkey-ness will do this team in this year.

  96. I Am Winning September 5th, 2012 at 7:48 pm

Good job by Kuroda to do his job. He kept him at third.

Also a good job by Keppinger to not jump the gun and get caught in a run down.

  97. yankeefeminista September 5th, 2012 at 7:48 pm

    therealkevin,

What I like is how shallow he plays. Not too many dunkers fall in front of him. He can also make up ground. He is just terrible at reading the ball, jumps, and tracking the ball. He has a terrible eye out there.

  104. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 5th, 2012 at 7:50 pm

Jays get a run back. 2-1.

Anyone know our projected pitching rotation in Bmore?

  105. MG September 5th, 2012 at 7:50 pm

I think the Yankees should hire Phil Linz as the 3rd base coach and send him on the team bus with a harmonica after this series, maybe it will snap Girardi the way it snapped Yogi in ’64 and they will wake up…

  106. mick September 5th, 2012 at 7:50 pm

Alright Giants fans (I’m a Rams fan so I need help on this), I’m starting Bradshaw tonight at my flex position for fantasy football…. good move or should I start Reggie Wayne at Chicago instead?

  108. jacksquat September 5th, 2012 at 7:50 pm

I’d rather Granderson play a little deeper. It’s usually not the singles that beat you, it’s the doubles and triples over your head.

  109. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 5th, 2012 at 7:51 pm

  112. blake September 5th, 2012 at 7:51 pm

    joeman,

You’re absolutely right. I would love to know the offensive averages of those players this season. I would image it’s something like .275 BA,under .500 SLG,with around a .350 OBP for an average of $23 million.

That’s my gripe with ARod. I feel as if for his pay we could get a very good position player, reliever, and starting pitcher for that money. He is worth less than 1/3 of his pay right now.

  119. yankeefeminista September 5th, 2012 at 7:53 pm

  120. Captain Clutch September 5th, 2012 at 7:53 pm

I really can’t beat that they pitched to Longoria with 1st base open. The Rays lineup is absolutely dreadful if you hit your spots. The Yanks probably don’t even need a manger. He just lets the guys play and never has a feel for the game or even uses any strategy.

  121. ZMANINSJ September 5th, 2012 at 7:53 pm

CC will pitch Saturday, which leaves Freddy for Sunday. I do see the Yankees taking one of four in Baltimore. There will be another freaky game like last Saturday.

  123. austinmac September 5th, 2012 at 7:54 pm

I agree with the Kaat principle. If they fall in front of the OFs, it’s their fault, but if they go over their head it’s the pitcher’s fault.

  126. theREALkevin September 5th, 2012 at 7:54 pm

    Winning,

Yeah you’re right about his reads. Which is why I think he’d be much better suited for a corner outfield spot. If you make a bad read in CF, there’s so much ground, the runners can run all day. You put Grandy in right or left I think he becomes a plus defender. I wish Gardner was around to at least have a debate as to who should play CF, but no such luck.

  149. I Am Winning September 5th, 2012 at 7:56 pm

    jacksquat,

I’m not disagreeing, but those dunkers are just as bad if the runner can steal second. I specifically mentioned he can make up ground at an above average rate (in my opinion.) So compared to other players, he is making up that ground. Where I absolutely agree with you, is that based on his personal defensive abilities, he is better at playing back more than he does. If we had Trout in CF, he would definitely be an asset playing closer to the infield. We all know he can run his ass back to the wall as fast as anybody if need be. Playing more shallow also allows for a much greater chance of getting the runner out on the bases, specifically at home.

WTF? is it surprising the team is tanking like this? my cable bill is at least $10 more each month because of the YES network and i can’t exclude it from the cable package even if i don’t watch it because the team sucks. that’s probably close to $1B in annual revenue and they have guys on the cheap like ibanez, jones, rapada & eppedly?

  220. Yankee Trader September 5th, 2012 at 8:10 pm

    Trisha-

Kuroda is the Ace of the staff, gets less run support than every Ray starter except Hellickson, and even less than King Felix.

Kuroda gets 2 runs less than Sabathia gets. If the Yankees fail in the postseason and offer him another one year contract, he’ll probably see if the Dodgers want him back or return to Japan.

  221. I Am Winning September 5th, 2012 at 8:10 pm

    4 NYY,

I’m saying they have every intention to be under the luxury tax; but when push comes to shove, it won’t happen.

  222. MG September 5th, 2012 at 8:10 pm

this is probably the best Moore has thrown the ball all year, every pitch is in the glove and on the corner so far…

  223. 4 NYY September 5th, 2012 at 8:10 pm

“That’s why you need your pitching to keep it incredibly low-scoring until the bats start to warm up.”

Jeter deserves breaks like that because he’s actually got some energy and life to his game.

  231. Triple Short of a Cycle September 5th, 2012 at 8:11 pm

this is his first full year starting in the big leagues and he struggled at the beginning of the year. Just watch him pitch… his stuff is type 5 in baseball from the lefty side.

    —————————

I love Moore and his potential and what he has done since the break. My point was not that he isn’t a good pitcher but that he gave up a total of 5 runs in the last 2 games. Why can’t the yankees score 2 runs off of him. That is my point.

  232. Captain Clutch September 5th, 2012 at 8:11 pm

Jeter is the only person who can reach base. Let me guess Swisher strikes out and Cano hits into a DP? Or Swish hits into a DP. One or the other. Swish please bunt!!!

  233. yankeefeminista September 5th, 2012 at 8:11 pm

  234. theREALkevin September 5th, 2012 at 8:11 pm

Matt Moore is going to be awesome one day soon, but the Yankees probably couldn’t hit anyone right now. It just makes it tougher that they’re up against a quality pitcher tonight.

Every year this teams numbers are declining. We get another year older and our supposed allstars stats decline further each year yet expectations are the same as if they have skills like in their prime.

I mean am i the only one seeing the consistent drop in stats each year ?

Oh look swish went for a homer!

I didn’t like the fact that Cano took a strike right down the middle when the Yankees have been baffled by him. He was obviously going to throw a strike, and he just took it. I’m a proponent of taking the 4th pitch most of the time, but just here it didn’t make sense. It didn’t hurt us, he obviously walked, but I would have loved to see him swing.

  330. MG September 5th, 2012 at 8:23 pm

you could see the difference in Moore this inning, maybe it was having to pitch from the stretch, maybe he just lost his concentration.

that’s what happens with young pitchers, fortunately the Yankees took advantage of it because if he sustained what he was throwing the 1st 3 innings they weren’t scoring much if anything.

  331. theREALkevin September 5th, 2012 at 8:23 pm

Glad that they finally scored a few runs, but I’m not sold yet that they’re out of their slump. A-Rod guessed right on that FB, won’t happen every time. And Martin’s hit was sort of lucky- he was way late and it kind of found a nice spot down the line. We’ll see if they can build on this.

  332. Captain Clutch September 5th, 2012 at 8:23 pm

Girardi has to seriously stop playing Jones. He can’t drive the ball and looks terrible. Let Nunez play LF for a day. The Yanks are stupid Nunez should have been playing the outfield the whole time he was in AAA.

  333. ZMANINSJ September 5th, 2012 at 8:23 pm

This is all just a start to getting things going in the right direction again. A win tonight is huge but it doesn’t mean a thing if we get swept in B-More.

Hopefully winning tonight gives everyone that good feeling back again and we do the sweeping in B-More, but a win tonight alone doesn’t raise any flags.

One day at a time right now and that’s just fine with me.

That was ball 3. Swisher is really killing them.

  395. mick September 5th, 2012 at 8:42 pm

  396. UnKnown September 5th, 2012 at 8:42 pm

I’m fine with a total of 3 runs tonight. That should be good enough to get a win with Kuroda on the mound.

Actually I’m not fine with 3 runs but I think a win can be managed with only 3 runs. I said earlier I would’ve signed up for 3 runs in a heartbeat tonight.

  397. ZMANINSJ September 5th, 2012 at 8:42 pm

  409. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 5th, 2012 at 8:49 pm

4 NYY – it’s kind of a strange thing but I clearly remember no hitters being broken up by members of the pitcher’s former team – not all the time of course because there aren’t always members of the pitcher’s former team as opponents. But when there are, it just seems that they are the ones to break it up. So it always makes me think it’s because they are thoroughly familar with what their former pitchers throw.

You know I totally trust Sori. I just want him to have a little breathing room “in case”.

I know you couldn’t have thought that one up yourself because you show signs of ultra-low intelligence generally – not that there’s anything wrong with that of course! (The “LOL” is always a sure-fire sign of a peabrain.)

But yes you’re right. The Jays have taken the lead!!!

    3-2!!!

  489. NYY_Girl_Penny September 5th, 2012 at 9:12 pm

  498. UnKnown September 5th, 2012 at 9:12 pm

Unbelievable knack the Yankee pitchers have for pissing away a lead as soon as they get it.

  511. Captain Clutch September 5th, 2012 at 9:16 pm

  512. Lou-in-Vermont September 5th, 2012 at 9:16 pm

Well, Martin’s HR was the Yanks 6th hit of the game, their quota in the last week or so, so don’t expect any more hits.

I repeat, nobody makes an announcement to tell you when a slumping offense is going to heat up. But in the meantime, you need your starting pitching to keep it low-scoring.

In this case, the offense heated up quickly enough that 4 runs wasn’t enough to hold the bats back.

  607. Captain Clutch September 5th, 2012 at 9:36 pm

  608. blake September 5th, 2012 at 9:37 pm

The Yanks HAVE to make this lead stick….HAVE to

  609. jmills September 5th, 2012 at 9:37 pm

Another strong start by Morrow – suicide squeeze by Hech – reliable Oliver on with Jansen unfortunately well rested hopefully to close – holding 4 run margin – double play started by Hech – onto the ninth :)

  610. blake September 5th, 2012 at 9:38 pm

Yes very disappointing AB by Swisher….little fly ball there gives you a 3 run lead.

Great move by Joe to pinch run Ichiro there…..if he doesn’t do that they may not score that inning.

  611. Captain Clutch September 5th, 2012 at 9:38 pm

Maddon is going to out smart Girardi here with his pinch hitters. Girardi never ever learns. You don’t pinch hit for all stars but Maddon will pinch hit for anyone not named Longoria.

  612. jmv September 5th, 2012 at 9:38 pm

Jeter is my MVP. He’s the main reason we are in first place. The most game-changing single player in the game this year

  613. Niblick September 5th, 2012 at 9:38 pm

Did Girardi really think that Maddon wasn’t going to pinch hit for his scrub lefties? I am really tired of Girardi continuing to make the same stupid mistakes time after time. You can’t have Logan facing righties in the 7th inning of a game that you have to win.

It doesn’t. My point was that until a cold offense heats up, you need your pitching to keep the score low. Luckily, the offense heated up quickly tonight. Before tonight, and for a while, 4 runs felt pretty insurmountable.

  635. Captain Clutch September 5th, 2012 at 9:47 pm

That pitch was right down the middle. Robertson has to start locating his pitches. He didn’t locate at all on Monday.

  636. b_widmer2 September 5th, 2012 at 9:47 pm

Soriano hasn’t pitched since Saturday? If it gets to him, it could be a long 9th.

  652. UnKnown September 5th, 2012 at 9:53 pm

From Elias: Since 1994, the first year of the six-division format, only two other teams relinquished sole possession of first place in their division at any time during a season in which they led their division by at least 10 games. The 1995 Angels led the A.L. West by as many as 11 games as late as August 9 only to see their lead vanish by September 20. The Angels lost a one-game playoff to the Mariners for the A.L. West title. The 2006 Tigers led the A.L. Central by 10 games through games of August 7, but by September 28 they were tied for first place with the Twins and settled for the Wild Card and an eventual World Series loss to the Cardinals.

That was dumb by Maddon to burn Upton in that spot last inning. Now all he has left on the bench is Pena to try come up with a clutch bomb.

  680. Captain Clutch September 5th, 2012 at 10:10 pm

Some of the Rays pitchers are making it look easy. Let’s go Soriano!!!

  681. blake September 5th, 2012 at 10:11 pm

  682. Bo knows September 5th, 2012 at 10:11 pm

The Rays are just knee deeper in pitching, both McGee and Davis from each side, mid nineties plus breaking pitches. Davis just threw a ninety mph slider. Amazing.

    “trisha-

it cracks me up how you try to co-opt every yankee victory to be your very own.”

exactly how do I do that randy? And were you here before as “shook ones”? It definitely had your hand-print.

As someone who doesn’t have the energy to hold grudges, I have to ask you sincerely what in you motivates you to continue with your nastiness day in and day out, once you’ve decided that someone hits you the wrong way? Is it something inside you that automatically causes it to happen? Because I would think it would be work to hold onto that kind of negativity. Maybe it energizes you to take shots all the time? What exactly is it?

By the way, I’ve never found this team “uninteresting” so maybe you mistake myt exuberance at their wins as co-opting every victory to be my own.

A few nights ago, someone posted something about pessimists/realists 1 – optimists 0. That’s the reason I posted about optimists and pessimists tonight. It was a takeoff on that, nothing else.

I don’t understand people who hate. And I don’t understand people who can carry on juvenile nastiness toward people they’ve never met, over something like baseball differences. That’s why I don’t bother trolling anybody’s posts. Even if I disagree with them, there’s nothing that motivates me to stalk everything they post.

With you and one or two others, I find myself in a position to always having to be fending off constant juvenile shots. I truly don’t understand people like you.
