9. Elliot Johnson 2B

David Price P

TV/Radio: YES/WCBS 880

Umpires: Scott Barry HP, Gary Darling 1B, Paul Emmel 2B, Jerry Meals 3B

Weather: Mostly cloudy

Vs. the East: The Yankees are 7-9 so far in this stretch of 22 straight games against the AL East.

Slow starters: The Yankees have dropped five straight series openers and six of the last seven.

Price vs. Sabathia: The Rays have won six of seven games when these two have started against each other. Price is 4-1 with a 2.31 ERA in those games. Sabathia has won just three of his 17 starts vs. Tampa Bay since joining the Yankees, going 3-7 with a 3.57 ERA.

Update, 7:22: Sabathia gets out of a first-and-third, two-out jam. It didn’t look like he had his good velocity again.

Update, 7:36: Cano ends a threat with a double-play ball, now 10 for his last 43.

Update, 7:47: Sabathia 1-2-3 second, and now Martin has the Yankees’ first hit off Price.

Update, 7:54: Yankees up 1-0 on Steve Pearce RBI single with two outs in the second. Yankees had been 2 for their last 35 with runners in scoring position.

Update, 8:00: Another 1-2-3 inning for Sabathia, looks like he has good off-speed stuff tonight.

Update, 8:17: Sabathia hits Longoria in the foot, then retires three straight. So he’s allowed one hit through four.

Update, 8:24: Andruw Jones pops out to end a 1-2-3 fourth. Now 0 for 2 tonight and 4 for his last 25. Price has allowed just two hits through four, both in the second.

Update, 8:34: Velocity can be negated by bad location: leadoff double by Gimenez on a 94 mph Sabathia fastball up over the plate, wild pitch, walk, RBI single by Johnson on a 93 mph fastball, RBI single by Jennings on a 93 mph fastball, 2-1 Rays in the fifth. Eppley warming.

Update, 8:43: Sabathia gets a big bases-loaded, no-out double-play ball out of Longoria, but it’s 3-1, heading for the last of the fifth. Could’ve been much worse.

Update, 8:48: Granderson hits one off the top of the fence and out into the Yankees’ pen, HR No. 38, 3-2.

Update, 8:59: Jeter passes Willie Mays, now sole possession of 10th on the all-time hits list with 3,284. First and second, two outs.

Update, 9:01: Johnson robs A-Rod of an RBI single with a diving stop, side retired.

Update, 9:08: 1-2-3 for Sabathia in the sixth.

Update, 9:15: Price was looking tough again in the sixth, 1-2-3 inning. If he holds on, he will be 18-5 in his Cy Young bid. He missed his previous start with a shoulder issue.

Update, 9:22: Sabathia is done after an RBI single by Zobrist, four runs, six hits so far, two outs in the seventh, Eppley gets the ball. It’s 4-2.

Update, 9:33: Price 1-2-3 seventh, but I believe he’s at 105 pitches.

Update, 9:37: Homer No. 23 for Upton, 5-2.

Update, 9:48: Price is done. Joel Peralta will come on for the eighth.

Update, 9:57: Long two-run HR to left for A-Rod, 5-4.

Update, 10:10: Granderson strands runners at first and second with two outs against Rodney. Chamberlain on for the ninth.

Update, 10:24: Will Jeter return to short tomorrow? Nunez error on two-out grounder makes it 6-4. Can’t hide his glove anywhere.

Update, 10:33: Yankees lose 6-4.

Won’t get to watch or be here for long. G-son’s game to go to.

I don’t care who pitches well, and who doesn’t…..

I don’t care who hits well and who doesn’t…..

I don’t care who makes an error and who doesn’t….

    I don’t care if G-man manages well or not….

    I don’t care if a coach screws up a runner or doesn’t…..

ALL I WANT IS A “W” at the end of the game !

  17. Tar September 14th, 2012 at 7:17 pm

Damn, he was out. Very close though.

  23. theREALkevin September 14th, 2012 at 7:20 pm

The umping in MLB is getting to be a joke. It’s embarrassing.

And Girardi just stays in the dugout. Nice.

  24. Mordot11 September 14th, 2012 at 7:21 pm

Sigh. Need CC to pick up the team here. Ace’s burden.

  25. Tar September 14th, 2012 at 7:22 pm

Hey theres Cone. Didn’t realize he was working

  26. theREALkevin September 14th, 2012 at 7:22 pm

Nice job by CC getting tough there & good solid play by Nunez.

  27. Niblick September 14th, 2012 at 7:23 pm

Kind of messy; lots of pitches; but at least CC didn’t give up any runs.

  28. Tar September 14th, 2012 at 7:23 pm

OK a lot of pitches but he can make that up.

I really think CC needs to have an attitude and establish the inner half as belonging to him tonight.

  29. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 14th, 2012 at 7:24 pm

“The umping in MLB is getting to be a joke. It’s embarrassing. ”

Getting to be a joke? Don’t start me on one of my “favorites” topics. GRRR!!!

    ****************

Didn’t catch CC’s inning. Anyone want to give me the cliff note version of what you saw?

  30. Tar September 14th, 2012 at 7:26 pm

I can deal with Kay, Flash is very annoying to me. Cone makes everyone else listenable. Come on Jeet.!!!

  31. theREALkevin September 14th, 2012 at 7:29 pm

    Trisha,

Haha! Sorry about that. It’s a sore spot for me also.

To answer your question, CC looked alright. Made a couple mistakes to Upton but other than that he looked OK. Still not CC-esque as far his sharpness and velocity, but not too bad.

  32. jackamir September 14th, 2012 at 7:30 pm

Price is tough. We have to take advantage of any opportunity with RISP & CC has to hold them down. Brilliant trite cliche statement but it is true.

  33. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 14th, 2012 at 7:30 pm

    Thanks kev!

  34. Tar September 14th, 2012 at 7:30 pm

    Trish

Zobrist lined a single and was on everything CC threw. Nobody else was though. He struck out Upton but Martin had a pass ball that the ump missed a close call at 1b. It cost CC a few more pitches but no damage.

  35. Tar September 14th, 2012 at 7:32 pm

Actually Trish, Upton had a loud long foul ball. Hit it a mile but foul :D

  36. Yankee Trader September 14th, 2012 at 7:33 pm

Good chance here to get to Price, who looks uncomfortable.

  37. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 14th, 2012 at 7:34 pm

The O’s killed the Rays the first night but the next two games were 3-2 games. I agree we need to make hay with any scoring opportunities because they might be like hen’s teeth, especially with Price.

  38. Ys Guy September 14th, 2012 at 7:34 pm

    Time to do damag

  39. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 14th, 2012 at 7:34 pm

There’s the great Robinson doing his thing.

  43. jacksquat September 14th, 2012 at 7:36 pm

    Cano swinging defensively against Price.

  44. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 14th, 2012 at 7:36 pm

Having said oh dear, we are all sharp baseball fans and as such know we don’t despair in the first inning, right? Right?

    ;)

  45. Tar September 14th, 2012 at 7:36 pm

Hit it hard, oh well. I’m expecting a great game from CC

  46. WMD September 14th, 2012 at 7:36 pm

    cano coming up small already

  47. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 14th, 2012 at 7:37 pm

‘Hit it hard, oh well. I’m expecting a great game from CC”

    Hear hear!

  48. Niblick September 14th, 2012 at 7:37 pm

Once again, real good hitting with RISP

  49. Captain Clutch September 14th, 2012 at 7:37 pm

It seems like 90% of the time when they have guys on base and less than 2 outs it’s a DP.

  50. Don Vito A. Bellamo September 14th, 2012 at 7:38 pm

What a SHOCKER….we have 1 out, with 2 on….and one of our “best” hitters ends the inning by hitting into a DP ? Really ? Like that is SO FRICKING RARE ! :-(

  51. jackamir September 14th, 2012 at 7:40 pm

    Hurry back Teix—We need you!!!!!

Best post I’ve seen so far, including my own of course!

  53. tipsie September 14th, 2012 at 7:40 pm

unable to watch; did Cano hit it hard?

whereas Cano’s 908 OPS & stats (other than RBI) are fine, it is not a coincidence that his season high OPS of 969 came during the Toronto series immediately prior to the sweep in Oakland (and subsequent FUNK which we’re trying to shake still)

as he goes, the offense goes; he is maddening at times

  54. Big Bad Boss Tone Ian September 14th, 2012 at 7:40 pm

The least we could do is work this guy’s pitch count and try to have him outta the game by the 6th

  55. Tar September 14th, 2012 at 7:41 pm

“What a SHOCKER….we have 1 out, with 2 on….and one of our “best” hitters ends the inning by hitting into a DP ? Really ? Like that is SO FRICKING RARE !”

I know it’s ben frustrating, but Price is a tough pitcher especially against a LH bat. Cano hit it hard, but right at the SS. Take the victory of making Price throw a lot of pitches.

  56. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 14th, 2012 at 7:42 pm

We’re lucky CC is a workhorse because longer counts aren’t as detrimental to him as they would be to less of a workhorse-type pitcher.

  57. ctyankeefan. September 14th, 2012 at 7:42 pm

Is it just me, or does CC’s delivery look a bit off/weird tonight?

  58. theREALkevin September 14th, 2012 at 7:42 pm

Eh, Cano didn’t really hit it very hard. But they got base runners which is a plus- just keep getting guys on and eventually, maybe they’ll be able to bring a few in.

  59. Tar September 14th, 2012 at 7:42 pm

Price threw 24 pitches in the first, ill take that.

  60. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 14th, 2012 at 7:44 pm

    Good job CC!!!

  61. blake September 14th, 2012 at 7:44 pm

    Good job CC

  62. blake September 14th, 2012 at 7:47 pm

I cant wait to see Jonesy and Pearcy hit.

  63. tipsie September 14th, 2012 at 7:47 pm

Sure would be nice to win the first game of a series since Cleveland, 28 days ago!

  64. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 14th, 2012 at 7:47 pm

That was Russell Martin. No need to ask why he’s batting 5th!

    :)

  65. blake September 14th, 2012 at 7:48 pm

Martin could be a better hitter….he has the tools.

  66. Yankee Trader September 14th, 2012 at 7:48 pm

Good job by “Much Maligned Martin.”

  67. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 14th, 2012 at 7:48 pm

“I cant wait to see Jonesy and Pearcy hit.”

Jones’ sac fly brought in one or the two runs from yesterday’s game. He also walked.

  68. Tar September 14th, 2012 at 7:49 pm

“Eh, Cano didn’t really hit it very hard.”

Just went back and looked, solid contact, b ut not real hard.

One thing I noticed is Price doesn’t always come to a complete stop. If I was Giradi i would complain to the ump. That is very close to a balk.

  69. Captain Clutch September 14th, 2012 at 7:51 pm

Too bad Jones doesn’t have more speed or he beats that out.

  70. Tar September 14th, 2012 at 7:53 pm

    Bonus!! Pierce!!!

  71. austinmac September 14th, 2012 at 7:53 pm

    Pearcey!!

  72. Niblick September 14th, 2012 at 7:53 pm

Note to Grandy: Russell is only 23 points behind and is closing fast.

  73. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 14th, 2012 at 7:53 pm

“I cant wait to see Jonesy and Pearcy hit.”

  76. blake September 14th, 2012 at 7:53 pm

Nice job by Pearce to go the other way

  81. Tar September 14th, 2012 at 7:56 pm

Actually I thought he had a decent AB. I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets to Price tonight.

  82. blake September 14th, 2012 at 7:56 pm

    Trisha,

Youre right….you haven’t been paying close enough attention.

  85. theREALkevin September 14th, 2012 at 7:57 pm

Pearce I can tolerate at this point. I think he was over trying at first, he’s looking better recently. Jones, I am less optimistic about and think he is pretty close to being washed up.

  107. theREALkevin September 14th, 2012 at 8:02 pm

Nunez is a major leaguer. End of story. He should not be in the minors again for the next few seasons for whatever organization he’s with. I don’t know if he is an every day guy or not, but he’s a pro.

  108. Tabbert September 14th, 2012 at 8:02 pm

Those both would have more than likely have been hits if jeter were at short. Nunez obviously with much more ranger… and how about that arm? Very nice to see.

Very good point. As much as Swisher does an adequate job at first, I’d much rather see him in right.

  118. Tar September 14th, 2012 at 8:06 pm

    Trader

I will take your word for it

All I know is he had a good cut against Price, and that’s a start.

  119. Shame Spencer September 14th, 2012 at 8:07 pm

Can you imagine if this game ended up 1-0 and CC got the win?

While that may not happen, imagine if we got two amazing SP performances in a row? I’d rather have the SP get things straight and count on the offense to pull it together in a few more games – not that I don’t want any runs. But I want the SP to realize it can keep the other side from scoring and not feel they can rely on offense bailing them out!

    Blake

He purchased almost 100K worth of jewelry with a 30k down payment. The company is suing for the remainder. The question is where did he get 30k, and why did they give a college student that kind of credit. It’s out there on google and big news down here.

  182. I Am Winning September 14th, 2012 at 8:37 pm

If Martin allowed 2 WP, hard to put that on CC.

All things considered, it could have been a lot worse.

Okay offense, time to bail him out. Wish it could have been otherwise, but it is what it is.

  216. Yankee Trader September 14th, 2012 at 8:45 pm

That inning could have been worse. Time for the offense to do their own damage.

  217. blake September 14th, 2012 at 8:45 pm

limited the damage at least….good play by Alex….could argue he should have come home but then you have 1 out and the bases loaded and they still likely score at least 1 run….what he did gave them a better chance at limiting the damage…..Alex is a really smart player.

  218. Niblick September 14th, 2012 at 8:45 pm

  220. umbrelladoc September 14th, 2012 at 8:46 pm

  231. Tar September 14th, 2012 at 8:49 pm

    Tom

It’s been great. A little bit of trouble from CC that last inning and they scurried in here.

  232. Captain Clutch September 14th, 2012 at 8:51 pm

CC has to be hurt. No excuse for walking Pena who can’t hit lefties and giving up hits to a bunch of .200 hitters. His command is awful and his stuff is really average. I knew that all of his innings pitched would catch up to him eventually. If he gets into trouble in the 6th Joey binder has to pull him.

    Grrrrr

  268. Captain Clutch September 14th, 2012 at 9:01 pm

Of course AAA Johnson makes the play. Look a .200 hitter dives for the ball.

  269. blake September 14th, 2012 at 9:01 pm

I didn’t think he was gonna get that…..ugh

  270. Tar September 14th, 2012 at 9:01 pm

ARRGH. Two good defensive plays and freaking MEALS!

  271. Big Bad Boss Tone Ian September 14th, 2012 at 9:01 pm

That was an opposite field base hit, and of all people, Eliot Johnson saves a run. Cano doesnt save that run, but Eliot Johnson does. What kind of world do we live in??

  272. jacksquat September 14th, 2012 at 9:02 pm

    Meals cost us a run!

  273. Tyler September 14th, 2012 at 9:02 pm

Should have been a double from Nunez. I hate Jerry Meals more than ever.

  274. Tar September 14th, 2012 at 9:03 pm

“Cano doesnt save that run, but Eliot Johnson does. ”

You don’t watch many Yankee games do you? Are you a Padre’s fan?

  275. ricardo1020 September 14th, 2012 at 9:03 pm

    Hopefully Cano took notes.

  276. NYY_Girl_Penny September 14th, 2012 at 9:03 pm

Swished just missed it :) sadly its the same story again and again!

Ive never seen Cano dive like that.. Not saying he doesnt do it just saying ive never seen him.

  277. blake September 14th, 2012 at 9:04 pm

    Stupid Meals

  278. TheStraw September 14th, 2012 at 9:04 pm

Swisher’s fly out is a sac fly if Meals gets his ugly butt out of the way

  280. Shame Spencer September 14th, 2012 at 9:04 pm

Pearce has played some good 1B tonight.

  281. Big Bad Boss Tone Ian September 14th, 2012 at 9:04 pm

Tar, I watch every game. I could possibly be Teary Francona. And I just saw recently Cano fail to dive for a ball (which allowed the winning run to score) similar to the Eliot Johnson play last half inning.

  282. Tyler September 14th, 2012 at 9:05 pm

Here’s a hint. Cano doesn’t dive for that because he gets to it standing up then fires across his body.

  283. ZMANINSJ September 14th, 2012 at 9:05 pm

It’s a given that CC will allow at least 3 runs every outing. Anyone thinking otherwise hasn’t watched him the past few months.

  284. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 14th, 2012 at 9:06 pm

“This little rally makes CC’s crappy pitching hurt even more.”

Questions to any of the well-equilibrated posters here (you know who you are, don’t be modest!)

    1. Were those passed balls or wild pitches? (unfortunately I was distracted with a phone call and was watching but didn’t have the sound on)

    2. If they were passed balls, did they end up making a difference in the ultimate scoring?

  285. Big Bad Boss Tone Ian September 14th, 2012 at 9:06 pm

Cano doesnt get to that ball. You’re dreaming. His route-taking to balls is awful, as is his UZR

  287. NYY_Girl_Penny September 14th, 2012 at 9:06 pm

Why Fartardi keeps Swisher behind Jetes i have no idea. I wonder how many times as a kid Joe had to put his hand on a burning stove before he realized it was hot! Im gonna guess 47 times.

  288. blake September 14th, 2012 at 9:06 pm

Nunie! his feet look much better….much softer….he’s fielding more in rhythm

  289. Big Bad Boss Tone Ian September 14th, 2012 at 9:07 pm

Excuse me, his UZR is awful every year except this year.

  290. Captain Clutch September 14th, 2012 at 9:07 pm

Everytime the ball is hit to Nunez I get nervous. But he has done a good job and his feet are planted better. Their best lineup is him DHing.

  291. ctyankeefan. September 14th, 2012 at 9:08 pm

Fartardi? Thats a reach, I think my little nephew can do better than that.

  292. Tar September 14th, 2012 at 9:08 pm

    CR

  293. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 14th, 2012 at 9:08 pm

CC is a workhorse. He doesn’t give up. I admire that in him. He goes right back out and digs in.

  294. TheStraw September 14th, 2012 at 9:08 pm

I think there was one of each, but Martin really should have stopped them both. And they cost the Yanks.

  295. NYY_Girl_Penny September 14th, 2012 at 9:09 pm

And the ump jerry mearls may have just cost us a run.. If he was on 2b .. Jetes gets him to 3rd and Swish brings him home. Twice he screwed up preventing us to tie.

  296. blake September 14th, 2012 at 9:09 pm

Arod is great. Period. Pearce is doing a great job at first. I agree Shame. I really like Pearce at first. Not so much Swisher. But I do like Swisher in right. As long as that’s working out, I’m hoping Joe won’t put Swisher back at first. He has other options too.

  299. blake September 14th, 2012 at 9:10 pm

I’m a bit surprised Meals hasn’t tackled Arod yet on one of those ground balls.

  303. ZMANINSJ September 14th, 2012 at 9:10 pm

You don’t pay the Fat Man to eat innings, so the workhorse comment is meaningless. He’s paid to be an ace . . . which he isn’t.

  304. Big Bad Boss Tone Ian September 14th, 2012 at 9:10 pm

Tar, Cano makes some great plays. But having watched all of his games, he takes awful routes to the ball, and looking at UZR thru the years, he’s not as good defensively as every Yankees fan makes him out to be.

  305. Yankee Trader September 14th, 2012 at 9:11 pm

Martin got charged with one passed ball, his 7th of the year. However, I don’t know which one it was.

One fan’s “meaningless” is another fan’s reason for admiration.

If CC struggles during a game and still comes back out and gets outs and saves the pen, then he’s helping this team in the next-best way that he can. He’s already registered a quality start.

If anyone knows, were the two pitches that got by Russell WPs, PBs, or one of each

If PBs, did they have a direct effect on the scoring?

  323. tomingeorgia September 14th, 2012 at 9:18 pm

three or four runs would keep me here. Otherwise, the bad element has taken over again. Maybe there will be more fans here in the morning, and to those who are still here, Let’s Go Yanks!

  324. Tabbert September 14th, 2012 at 9:18 pm

Quality Start is a overrated Stat. 6 innings of 3 run ball is not something worth making a stat out of. If anything, 7 innings of 3 run ball… but I think 7 innings of 2 run ball should be a ” quality start”. Overall i think its a very stupid stat. Because you cant reality determine the quality of a start just off the runs and innings alone.

  325. Captain Clutch September 14th, 2012 at 9:18 pm

    ********

Yeah Jones is good for nothing because catching the ball doesn’t count.

  337. Tyler September 14th, 2012 at 9:21 pm

I think Nunez can turn into at worst an average shortstop with some time. It’s going to take patience through some mistakes but if he stays at shortstop he could be fine.

That’s a tough run to give up.

  349. Big Bad Boss Tone Ian September 14th, 2012 at 9:23 pm

This world we live in is a joke. When losers like Eliot Johnson can succeed, but that sac of crap Andruw can fail miserably and continue to play, you know things just arent right in the world.

  350. Captain Clutch September 14th, 2012 at 9:24 pm

Another bad start from CC. It seems like all he does is give up tack on runs and extra runs. Right now he is a guy that hopes to keep the Yanks in the game and only give up 4-5 runs. Terrible job giving up that extra run. Once again a stolen base scores a run.

  351. GhettoBlaster September 14th, 2012 at 9:24 pm

CC is not a lockdown ACE. He basically held up the Yanks in the offseason for that extension. Since the 2009 ALCS, he comes up VERY small in big games. Look at the Post season in 2010, 2011.

During this pennant race, all he does is give up leads and get hit around by VERY subpar lineups.

Now the Yanks are not only stuck with A-roid on the decline, they have to deal with Sabbathia on a Decline.

    What a joke.

  352. Tyler September 14th, 2012 at 9:24 pm

CC was ok but he just hasn’t been able to come through with a truly dominant performance in a while.

  353. NYY_Girl_Penny September 14th, 2012 at 9:24 pm

Whats up with all the “ima take my ball and go home if you dont pick me first” attitudes here.. Oh my i hope some of you are in jr high.

  354. Tar September 14th, 2012 at 9:24 pm

That one hurts. Just makes it a little harder, but certainly not impossible.

  355. Tabbert September 14th, 2012 at 9:24 pm

well.. so much for that ” quality start”. Great outing by our ” ACE”. He gave up the lead.. then he managed to give up another run after we cut the lead in half. It’s pretty sad when you cant rely on your ” Ace” to win games for you. Jesus… Slot Kuroda and pettitte ahead of him in the playoff rotation.

  356. Yankee Trader September 14th, 2012 at 9:24 pm

    Trisha-

Martin was charged with 1 passed ball, his 7th of the year and I have no clue which one it was and therefore no idea if it lead to a run!

And that run is a big 2 out run.

Have to knock out Price next inning and get into their bullpen before Rodney is called in.

Lack of speed is hurting us this game. Jones should have been able to beat that slow roller out.

  357. JonS September 14th, 2012 at 9:25 pm

    Ace.

  358. RYUKINGDOM September 14th, 2012 at 9:25 pm

Maybe if we had a lineup with Ichiro batting 8th and Nunez batting 9th and sit Jones the remainder of the season would be competative.

  359. Shame Spencer September 14th, 2012 at 9:25 pm

I thought we’d need a full 7 from CC and 4 runs to win this game lol… Miss Cleo I am not, but we can still get this W

  360. ricardo1020 September 14th, 2012 at 9:25 pm

Does Martin know he’s allowed to block the plate instead of standing two feet in front of it?

  361. Big Bad Boss Tone Ian September 14th, 2012 at 9:26 pm

This sac of crap Johnson is responsible for this lead. His opposite field a couple innings ago, his stolen base and score this inning, his defensive save of a run last inning. That’s at least 3 runs he’s responsible for.

In essence, we lost to Eliot Johnson. The guy is so worthless, his own parents want nothing to do with him.

  362. Shame Spencer September 14th, 2012 at 9:26 pm

I think we’ll have to wait until next season to know if CC had an injury or if he’s just in an adjustment period with a change in his stuff.

  371. benfica356 September 14th, 2012 at 9:29 pm

listen CC pitched better tonight, but hes no longer the same ACE. He will have to transition to a more groundball type pitcher but I can see him being effective in the long run. Girardi should have taken him out after the 6th. His stuff was up in the 7th

  372. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 14th, 2012 at 9:29 pm

Tar, funny I was thinking the same thing. Imagine if they got to Rodney. I’ll take the W any way I can get it.

  373. Tyler September 14th, 2012 at 9:29 pm

    Shame-

I think CC’s arm is still bothering him. He came back because of the AL East race but I don’t think he’s 100%. I’m not so much worried about him this year but I hope this isn’t a recurring thing down the stretch because of how long the Yanks have him signed for.

  374. Captain Clutch September 14th, 2012 at 9:29 pm

4 runs against the Rays lineup is absolutely awful for CC. Find as many positives as you want but you can only sugar coat it so much. The Rays lineup is all .200 hitters and AAA players that no one wants. He hasn’t had the command, velocity or stuff recently to be the real CC. The yanks are stuck with this version for the rest of the season because I am sure his arm isn’t 100%.

  375. GhettoBlaster September 14th, 2012 at 9:29 pm

CC shouldn’t have to battle against this pathetic lineup. He will go down as the highest paid #3 starter in the history of the game.

I am not surprised at all.

Next season they will begin to worry about his long term contract because he will be worse.

  381. NYY_Girl_Penny September 14th, 2012 at 9:31 pm

Im not against Cano on this team because of lack of production.. The readers digest version of why is :

    - i dont like his showboating
    - dont think he has a yankees mentality
    - hes super impatient and has HRHS
    - i fear the lack of flexibility in $ and IF
    - really wanna see this team rebuilt

    HRHS – homerun hero syndrome

  382. JonS September 14th, 2012 at 9:31 pm

“CC didn’t have his command today, but he battled and kept us in the game.”

This is the type of bullsh!t that continues to allow the sh!t we see.

4th and 5th starters battle to keep you in the game. Not your $23m+ supposed “Ace”.

  383. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 14th, 2012 at 9:31 pm

“something isn’t right with CC….stuff is down and he’s not locating anywhere close to the way he usually does…..he looks like he’s dropping his shoulder a little bit to me….not staying on top”

  387. Ace September 14th, 2012 at 9:32 pm

FYI. He did not keep us in the game. He blew a lead in his 5 straight start.

  388. blake September 14th, 2012 at 9:34 pm

    Pat M,

    it’s something….he’s not right…you can tell.

  389. ZMANINSJ September 14th, 2012 at 9:34 pm

Oh well, we have Nova against Shields tomorrow, so let’s keep those chins up.

  390. Captain Clutch September 14th, 2012 at 9:34 pm

Girardi abused CC the last couple of years so it’s really not a surprise. Every year when they get to October he never has anything yet. He never tried to watch his workload or take him out when they had a big lead. Every start it’s leave him out there until he throws 120 pitches.

  391. JobaTipsHisCap September 14th, 2012 at 9:35 pm

They don’t have the ability to win the game.
    Chokers

  392. JonS September 14th, 2012 at 9:35 pm

“CC shouldn’t have to battle against this pathetic lineup. He will go down as the highest paid #3 starter in the history of the game.”

    Hahaha

  393. Pat M. September 14th, 2012 at 9:35 pm

blake……he’s gutting it out whatever it is…….Sad that the natives here have turned on him …….

  394. Niblick September 14th, 2012 at 9:35 pm

JonS – I was just predicting Binder Joe’s comment after the game. I agree that CC stinks to high heaven. And he’s fat, too.

  395. Hassey September 14th, 2012 at 9:36 pm

Yeesh- the O is still not helping battle the nightmares of sagebrush blowing across the Stadium infield in mid-October

  396. TheStraw September 14th, 2012 at 9:36 pm

While I think the quality of CC’s pitches tonight were not as awful as they have been recently, the fact that he could not match Price’s effort in such an important game makes it a bad start.

  397. theREALkevin September 14th, 2012 at 9:36 pm

Swisher is killing this team. He had two nice games in Boston coming off that 0-28 he had and now he’s tanking again. Couldn’t come through again with 1st and 2nd one out when we had Price on the ropes. Would like to see him moved down in the order if this second slump continues.

  398. Yankee Trader September 14th, 2012 at 9:36 pm

I seriously doubt that CC is hiding an arm injury, especially involving the elbow.

  399. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 14th, 2012 at 9:36 pm

“The yanks are stuck with this version for the rest of the season because I am sure his arm isn’t 100%.”

And herein lies the difficulty. We’re going to know a lot more by the end of the season. If he can’t find his good stuff without really having to work, does Joe even consider any other rotation possibilities?

Can the postseason rotation be Kuroda, Andy, Nova, Hughes and not CC? Will Joe consider that an insult to CC and continue to insert him in the rotation no matter how he’s pitching?

    All things to be determined.

  400. blake September 14th, 2012 at 9:37 pm

would some of you rather Derek Lowe start these games? Something is clearly bothering CC and he’s trying to pitch through whatever it is…..yea he’s struggling a little bit but his struggling is 4 runs is almost 7 innings….it’s a concern but what are you gonna do…it’s not like they have anybody else any good.

  401. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 14th, 2012 at 9:37 pm

  433. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 14th, 2012 at 9:44 pm

To any rational posters left on this forum, I have to say that if any of the passed balls led to runs, it’s pretty hard to put that on CC. I’m not saying his pitching was great, but if runs would have been saved without the passed balls, then his pitching isn’t as bad as his line looks.

Just sayin’. No idea if they made a difference.

it doesn’t have to be career threatening to bother him….and he may not be hurt at all….it may just be that he’s struggling….it’s not an easy game and he’s been on the DL twice this year already….maybe he’s just fighting his mechanics. Maybe something minor is bothering him (still not even 100% confirmed even) but to me if you well enough to be out there on the mound there are no excuses. Your stuff might be affected somewhat, but if he is playing, it is fair to criticize his performance if it’s not been up to par.

  455. Tyler September 14th, 2012 at 9:49 pm

David Price has had 4 full seasons as a big league starter.

In two of them, he has had ERA’s of 2.72 and 2.54

In the other two, his ERA has been 4.42 and 3.49

So in those two seasons, he hasn’t been a “real ace” by some people’s standards.

hopefully Soriano opts out and they use that money to get an every day left fielder.

I don’t think that there’s any Yankee fan here who isn’t disappointed with CC’s performance tonight, along with his body of work for the season.

But the difference is that some of us aren’t hating on him personally for it. We realize that he isn’t out there trying to lose games. And so calling him all kinds of demeaning names because we’re disappointed with his performance is not part of who we are. I personally find that kind of behavior a lot more repugnant than CC’s performance, especially from those who call themselves fans.

Win or lose tonight Alex is not letting this team go down. He is on a mission.

  504. jmirjmir September 14th, 2012 at 9:58 pm

Tyler, you’re talking about winning a World Series, while the Yanks are busy falling completely out of the playoffs.

They blew a ten game lead, and they are far from a lock to even be in the postseason. To pretend like this is complaining about a WS-winning team is really disingenuous.

And too many people here don’t understand the game. “Meals got paid back” – are you kidding? I don’t care if the guy got drilled between the eyes. The guy got us again and cost us a double and very possibly a run.

  505. blake September 14th, 2012 at 9:59 pm

  509. theREALkevin September 14th, 2012 at 9:59 pm

    Blake,

I think Jeter is doing it a little better than CC (this is still assuming that CC is hurt), but you’re right that CC didn’t let the game get out of hand. Which is important.

  510. Benny Blanco September 14th, 2012 at 10:00 pm

When you see alex hit balls like that—-this idea that he has no power or lost it is ludicrous.

  511. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 14th, 2012 at 10:00 pm

    jmir-

I know this isn’t a World Series winning team at this point. My whole post was about that people here would still complain. Nothing makes some of these “fans” happy but to troll on a Friday night.

And look back at the posts… I didn’t say that Meals was paid back. I was angry because it took away an extra base, just like most in here said. You’re dead wrong.

The one thing I’ll say for Cano during this malaise is that he is walking a decent amount. I think that’s already 10 this month.

  532. theREALkevin September 14th, 2012 at 10:03 pm

It is really nice to see the flashes of the old A-Rod. With his age, the consistency isn’t there like it used to be, but that power stroke is still in there at times. No doubter.

Good AB by Cano. Gotta keep the rally going here. When’s the last time they had a walkoff???

    Shame-

I think CC’s arm is still bothering him.

    ———-

Meant to respond to this before, I agree Tyler.. I lean towards thinking its injury related but I also wanna leave the door open to the fact that he might just be adjusting to different capabilities and stuff. It could be that he’s trying to overcompensate for something he isn’t feeling on the ball and it’s throwing him off.

  544. Tar September 14th, 2012 at 10:05 pm

  550. JonS September 14th, 2012 at 10:08 pm

Shame Spencer – If CC’s truly dealing with an injury, it’s not helping him to keep saying he’s fine. He’d be looked at in a totally different light if people knew (thought) that he was dealing with something.

  552. Tyler September 14th, 2012 at 10:08 pm

That could be a good explanation too. I really didn’t like the quote from Girardi pregame about all the innings he’s logged in his life. That’s always scared me about CC and I hope that it’s not catching up to him.

This team plays just well enough to lose

  628. Pat M. September 14th, 2012 at 10:23 pm

Yanks tie this up as a tired arm Rodney will struggle in the 9th…..This is predicated on Jobs not serving up a run or 2….

  629. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 14th, 2012 at 10:23 pm

So now we have to tag Rodney for more.

    :(

  630. blake September 14th, 2012 at 10:23 pm

flat footed….the old Nunie came back there….didn’t move his feet….just stood there and the ball played him.

  631. Big Bad Boss Tone Ian September 14th, 2012 at 10:23 pm

    Good job Nunez.

    Lazy play.

Didnt bother to keep the ball in front of him.

With Longoria running, who couldnt limp to 1st base.

Excellent lack of effort. Well done Nunez.

    Ballgame.

  632. NYY_Girl_Penny September 14th, 2012 at 10:23 pm

You have to be kidding me!!! Nunez is the worst defense ive ever seen!!!

And trisha you have me completely confused. I have no idea what you trying to tell me.

  633. waka flocka September 14th, 2012 at 10:24 pm

that is totally unacceptable. the first thing you teach people about fielding is to get your body in front of the ball. for Nunez to not field that ball is completely ridiculous.

  634. sunny615 September 14th, 2012 at 10:24 pm

NuniEEEEEEE strikes again. What a jackass.

  635. Pat M. September 14th, 2012 at 10:24 pm

  636. Ys Guy September 14th, 2012 at 10:24 pm

  637. RSM September 14th, 2012 at 10:24 pm

I’m a huge Nunez defender, but that was INEXCUSABLE!

  638. Big Bad Boss Tone Ian September 14th, 2012 at 10:24 pm

There’s Rich Thompson just stealing a base immediately.

While Brett Gardner and Ichiro stand at 1B with cement in their cleats.

  639. Mordot11 September 14th, 2012 at 10:25 pm

    :(

  640. jacksquat September 14th, 2012 at 10:25 pm

Girardi with a little smirk after the Nunez error. Probably the kiss of death for Nunez. You have an excuse now Joe.

  641. theREALkevin September 14th, 2012 at 10:25 pm

Just really awkward by Nunez. Tried to stab at it almost instead just calmly getting in front of it.

It’s OK to make an error every now & then- you just HAVE to knock the ball down if you do. You cannot let it get past you and allow a run to score.

  642. Pat M. September 14th, 2012 at 10:25 pm

For a week it was one post after another about how joe HAD TO started nunez.

90% of that was for him to hit instead of Jones.

  644. NYY_Girl_Penny September 14th, 2012 at 10:26 pm

I dont come here much at all, id say a total of 10 games at the most, you have me confused with someone else.

  645. blake September 14th, 2012 at 10:26 pm

Montero could do what Martin has done behind the plate tonight….pass balls….Rays running at will….

  646. theREALkevin September 14th, 2012 at 10:26 pm

Oh come on. Nunez has done a lot of good since he came up. Some hits, energy, and he had looked good on D before that play. It was just horrible timing & he still needs work. He should still play despite that.

  647. beedogs September 14th, 2012 at 10:26 pm

TELL ME AGAIN why Nunez is still in the Yankee organization. Holy crap, he is the living embodiment of the word “disappointment”.

  648. umbrelladoc September 14th, 2012 at 10:27 pm

Nunez should have been the DH.

  649. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 14th, 2012 at 10:27 pm

Nunez made two fantastic plays earlier. So he made an error. He’s human. No I’m not thrilled he did. I’m sure he’s horrified by it.

    I know you’re frustrated.

And Ys Guy is right. This forum didn’t stop complaining about Nunez not being in games.

    SMH

  650. blake September 14th, 2012 at 10:27 pm

  652. Captain Clutch September 14th, 2012 at 10:27 pm

You have to be kidding me. I would be surprised if Nunez sees the field again this season. He is just brutal. A 24 year old DH. Just terrible.

  653. TheStraw September 14th, 2012 at 10:28 pm

    Chavy pinch hits for Pearce?

  654. ZMANINSJ September 14th, 2012 at 10:28 pm

Nunez will likely be bailed out by a zero thrown up by Rodney

  655. Phranchise September 14th, 2012 at 10:28 pm

I have a lot of time for Nunez and thought maybe the defense was behind him. How you get no leather on that is beyond me as a pro baseball player. He brings so much offensively, has speed, you can see range at short and a good arm, but not making easy plays, easy throws, just don’t understand it nor how to fix it?

  656. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 14th, 2012 at 10:29 pm

“Joba did a pretty nice job…..so theres that.”

Absolutely. And the offense did make a comeback. So there’s that too.

  657. blake September 14th, 2012 at 10:29 pm

Nunez should mostly be the DH vs LHP….he’s looked better at times defensively but there is still too much potential for stuff like that to play him much at SS.

  658. Phranchise September 14th, 2012 at 10:29 pm

Just get someone on for a shot

  659. Hassey September 14th, 2012 at 10:29 pm

  662. ac1 September 14th, 2012 at 10:29 pm

It is a shame with Nunez. The guy can hit, but there is no way they are going to let him start regularly on this team with his penchant for errors.

  663. beedogs September 14th, 2012 at 10:30 pm

    “YOUVE BEEN WARNED”. Tough talk.

  664. NYY_Girl_Penny September 14th, 2012 at 10:30 pm

Im sure Nunez is hurting right now very mad at himself.

Whos the pitchin coach for the rays?

  665. theREALkevin September 14th, 2012 at 10:30 pm

P.S., they were still losing before that error. Let’s not act like it was a lock they would come back at 5-4. The error really hurt but it’s not even close to the only reason why they lost, assuming they don’t come back.

  666. jmills September 14th, 2012 at 10:30 pm

I don’t think anyone has used my acount,….who would want to ? :)

  667. yankeenate September 14th, 2012 at 10:30 pm

  668. beedogs September 14th, 2012 at 10:31 pm

Might wanna make sure you at least threaten the right person before you go all Internet Tough Guy on someone.

  669. Captain Clutch September 14th, 2012 at 10:31 pm

Why even have Ichiro and Chavez pinch hit? Girardi is obviously going down with his old veterans who are old and shot. Pinch hitting for Nunez???!! Girardi is absolutely out of his mind.

  670. Big Bad Boss Tone Ian September 14th, 2012 at 10:31 pm

  679. Phranchise September 14th, 2012 at 10:32 pm

This team doesn’t have the special something to overcome these things. You want them to be that team, but they just aren’t. As much talent as they may have they have none of the magic a championship team has.

  680. TheStraw September 14th, 2012 at 10:32 pm

  687. ZMANINSJ September 14th, 2012 at 10:34 pm

  691. TheStraw September 14th, 2012 at 10:35 pm

  692. sunny615 September 14th, 2012 at 10:35 pm

  693. jmills September 14th, 2012 at 10:35 pm

Trish,…let ‘em say what they want, and then,….have some fun!!!

  694. Captain Clutch September 14th, 2012 at 10:35 pm

Pinch hitting Chavez for Nunez shows that Girardi has lost his mind. He is following the Torre way of doing things. No young player is given a chance and instead you have to go with the older player no matter how bad the veteran looks. Terrible job by Girardi. Ichiro is a shell of himself and Chavez hasn’t hit in a long time but of course pinch hit them because of what they did 10 years ago. Just brilliant.

  695. beedogs September 14th, 2012 at 10:36 pm

The Yankees would be utterly embarrassed in the playoffs, so maybe an A’s loss would be a good idea.

  696. sunny615 September 14th, 2012 at 10:36 pm

Go back to AAA Nunez. Trade him for an Oreo cookie.

  697. Shame Spencer September 14th, 2012 at 10:36 pm

I’d trade Nunez’s error for Martin’s.. and the context of discussing putting Nunez in the line up is largely based on many other factors. Context.

  698. blake September 14th, 2012 at 10:36 pm

  700. austinmac September 14th, 2012 at 10:37 pm

How far has a team gone without having a single ninth inning come from behind win? It just doesn’t feel hopeful. It was very similar last year with a terrible extra inning record.

If the team doesn’t win enough games from here out, they simply don’t deserve the playoffs. Win or go home.

  701. JobaTipsHisCap September 14th, 2012 at 10:38 pm

  705. beedogs September 14th, 2012 at 10:39 pm

Missing the playoffs might be the thing this team needs to take a serious look at its coaching staff and management, as well as a half dozen useless players. There are a lot of reasons to shop guys like Granderson and let “fan favorite” Nick Swisher walk.

  706. jmirjmir September 14th, 2012 at 10:39 pm

What a load of nonsense acting like it’s a moral failing to criticize CC’s weight. The people saying that are a JOKE.

How much money is he making? Yeah, I think it’s not unreasonable to expect him to be physically fit enough to perform through the balance of his contract.

Some people around here need to take a step off of their high horses.

  707. Hassey September 14th, 2012 at 10:41 pm

    He was YOUNGER.

You can get away with that when you’re in your twenties.

Everyone knows that catches up with you as you get older, and that was always the concern with signing the guy. And he’s done very little to allay that concern.

Otherwise, I mean, really, great point.

  716. ricardo1020 September 14th, 2012 at 10:44 pm

Because carrying that much weight around every day and carrying that much weight through the zone as you pitch couldn’t possibly have anything to do with that. You’re kind of not very bright.

  728. Hassey September 14th, 2012 at 10:48 pm

  730. jmirjmir September 14th, 2012 at 10:49 pm

I mean really, I find that unfathomable. Someone needs to be an expert in bio-mechanics to know that carrying around that much weight could have an effect on your delivery?

    Unreal.

  731. austinmac September 14th, 2012 at 10:49 pm

Nunez played the ball off to the side. He didn’t move his feet. But, I agree it didn’t matter.

  732. jacksquat September 14th, 2012 at 10:49 pm

It’s amazing all the names that always only pop up when the Yankees are doing badly at the moment or they just have something negative to say. Pathetic.

Anyway, Nunez could be a hell of shortstop if he could stop making errors on easy plays. I’m not sure Jeter makes one or two of the outs he made tonight.

  733. austinmac September 14th, 2012 at 10:50 pm

  737. Phranchise September 14th, 2012 at 10:50 pm

The biggest disappointment for me this season has been Cano. His stats look solid, but he is the one superstar in his prime that they need to be able to rely on. He hasn’t gotten the hits in key spots, he can’t hit lefties all of a sudden, RISP .233. His struggles have nothing to do with age or anything else. And to a lesser extent Granderson, but Cano is a far more accomplished hitter, Grandy is what he is so you have to live with his ks and droughts.

  738. TheStraw September 14th, 2012 at 10:50 pm

You’re kind of negative. And you obviously didn’t pay attention when he was losing 32 lbs in the offseason. In fact, you’re an idiot.

  739. ricardo1020 September 14th, 2012 at 10:51 pm

    BTW, O’s up 1-0 after 2 1/2.

  740. Carlo September 14th, 2012 at 10:52 pm

Rooting for oakland to lose is absurd. Winning the wild card is a joke. In a one game playoff, I don’t care who we play, we are underdogs. We play oakland again so we can control our own destiny as far as they are concerned. If baltimore wins tonight, our fate is out of our hands as it pertains to the division. Simplistic, but true. You root for oakland to sweep baltimore, plain and simple.

  741. bruceb September 14th, 2012 at 10:52 pm

Least we didn’t lose by two runs thanks to Nunie! Hard enough to score one run off Rodney but at least you have a chance of hitting one out. Two is near impossible. Guess the sky is falling in Yankeeland once again tonight.

  742. jmirjmir September 14th, 2012 at 10:52 pm

I just don’t see how what’s happening in a game between the 4th and 5th place teams is relevant to anything. Especially when more pressing things are happening. Like this team ending its season very early.

  743. bruceb September 14th, 2012 at 10:52 pm

I mean, one run, of course!

  744. Shame Spencer September 14th, 2012 at 10:54 pm

trisha – Yeah, to be honest I didn’t think it was actually that bad.. I thought surely we had gotten some late wins that I just didn’t recall. When they showed that number I was floored.

Granted, its more than likely many of those games were not realistically within reach by the 8th, but still… sort of a depressing number.

  745. jmirjmir September 14th, 2012 at 10:54 pm

I’m superstitious, so I don’t post when the team is winning. I have vague hopes that momentum will change when I come over here to vent. That, and mlb.tv ate my browser, so I couldn’t watch, anyway.

  746. Hassey September 14th, 2012 at 10:54 pm

  747. Nick in SF September 14th, 2012 at 10:55 pm

“I just don’t see how what’s happening in a game between the 4th and 5th place teams is relevant to anything.”

You don’t have to see. Not everyone is going to get everything.

  748. jmirjmir September 14th, 2012 at 10:56 pm

You’re kind of negative. And you obviously didn’t pay attention when he was losing 32 lbs in the offseason. In fact, you’re an idiot.
    ——

I also noticed him putting it back on during the season last season, and he looks fat as ever, yet again.

And Mr. Einstein, I hate to break this to you, but shaving 32 pounds off of that bulk is not exactly going to get it done. He’s still terrifically overweight, and anyone who says different either has a funnyhouse mirror for a tv or doesn’t have two working eyes.

  749. Shame Spencer September 14th, 2012 at 10:56 pm

austin – Not sure, but I hear ya on that… I think it comes down to knowing that you can win verses being afraid to lose. Winning in those situations breeds the former, losing the latter.

  761. bruceb September 14th, 2012 at 11:01 pm

I’m rooting for the As to beat the Os but right now, I feel as though Baltimore deserve to win the division. Of course, things can change before the end of the season but the Yankees are so flawed that they don’t deserve to make the play-offs. How many players are actually having a good year? Jeter, Kuroda, Soriano. That’s three out of 25, or put another way, 12% of the entire roster.

  762. jmirjmir September 14th, 2012 at 11:01 pm

Shame, as I said, that’s easier to deal with when you’re younger. It’s much easier to handle that bulk when you’re a young man and the springs are all still in perfect working order.

My father was a doctor. Fat people break down as they get older. It’s a law of the universe.

And pointing out an outlier here or there does not undermine the maxim.

And yes, believe it or not, it is simple physics.

  770. umbrelladoc September 14th, 2012 at 11:04 pm

Not so steamed about CC as the Giambification of the Yankee offense.

  771. jmirjmir September 14th, 2012 at 11:05 pm

jmills, would you be interested in taking on CC’s contract? That might be something we’d be willing to look into.

  772. Shame Spencer September 14th, 2012 at 11:05 pm

CC is a big strong dude.. I’m not saying he’s the most healthy dude, but I don’t think his weight is the issue. It looks more mechanical which leads you to believe is overcompensating for an injury or maybe a tick off his velocity and a lack of sharpness with his command.

  778. jmirjmir September 14th, 2012 at 11:08 pm

Shame, let me ask you this, though – were you honestly not worried about his weight when they signed him? I know that I was. There may be other things that could be the more *prominent* issues, but it’s not a shot in the dark to suggest that weight could be connected to any of those problems. It just puts so much strain on the body to be carrying around that kind of excess baggage.

  779. bruceb September 14th, 2012 at 11:08 pm

Carlo, I think you misread my email. Of course, I’m rooting against the Orioles but I’d much rather see the Yanks win the division through their own stellar play rather than hoping for another team to hand it to them.

Bo, I know , I had a recent experience like Alfred’s cap in the backseat. I was reading about Senna’s death by failed steering this week. The Prelude was in for service and on another note, my mechanic caught the fact the rack and pinnion steering was about to fail which would spell disaster when I’m given to 140 km/hr plus more on the HWY.

Must be a silly angel upon $my shoulder.

It is brutal that he’s not in Pinstripes.

Particularly considering that playing for the Yankees is a dream for most Cubans.

  786. Shame Spencer September 14th, 2012 at 11:12 pm

    jmir – Honestly no.

I’d think being overweight would put the most strain on the legs/knees, since that’s where he’s actually carrying the majority of the weight. CC’s hasn’t had any lower body issues that I know of, which leads me to think it’s a different type of issue. The number of innings CC has pitched was always far more of a concern than his weight, IMO.

  787. jmills September 14th, 2012 at 11:15 pm

Jmirjmir – CC is welcome here anytime. Have a great workout! I have to keep moving too.

  788. bruceb September 14th, 2012 at 11:15 pm

Remember the day when we were disappointed if we didn’t go 14-4 against the Rays during the season? Oh how the worm has turned.

Nova vs. Shields tomorrow doesn’t exactly fill you full of confidence either.

  789. jmirjmir September 14th, 2012 at 11:16 pm

Here’s the problem, though, Shame. Strain on the lower body can absolutely manifest as problems in the upper body, by affecting balance, drive, and overall mechanics – and can certainly impact the overall structure if there is overcompensation to make up for any trouble pushing that much bulk through the pitching zone.

But if you didn’t worry, you didn’t worry – I know that I did.

I also think he’s carrying more of his weight around his midsection than anywhere else, even accounting for his enormous lower body size.

My hope, when he was signed, was that he’d see what was coming down the road and try to shave off 15-20 pounds every year.

  790. Pat M. September 14th, 2012 at 11:16 pm

  791. jmirjmir September 14th, 2012 at 11:17 pm

  792. Carlo September 14th, 2012 at 11:18 pm

Bruce – my bad. Quite simply, I agree with you, they do deserve it. We simply aren’t doing anything to merit winning this division, but I still want to see it happen. I’ll take it even if we back into it. I’m not blind to the fact that we are going nowhere in october and maybe, for the future, its best if we don’t make the playoffs. They are struggling like crazy with 2013 season ticket sales the way it is so if missing the playoffs lights the fire that u can’t run this same product out there again next year then its a plus. I’m hoping the front office isn’t that pathetic, but I’m not sure. So, I’m willing to take my chances that they know this team stinks and they won’t be misled by an october appearance. And heck, before alds game 1, I know I’ll be psyched and optimistic no matter how we get there.

  793. jmills September 14th, 2012 at 11:19 pm

  794. J. Alfred Prufrock September 14th, 2012 at 11:20 pm

    Shame,

how you doing tonight. Definitely miles on the arm. One reason I didn’t want to cough up the farm for the King. He’s young, but has thrown mucho innings. C didn’t opt out, and he didi have that scare where he couldn’t feel his arm. The problem is, there isn’t much margin for error, here. When something stalls or goes south, it swallows us alive. Redemption rarely arrives.

  795. J. Alfred Prufrock September 14th, 2012 at 11:21 pm

jimills, thanks my friend. ur a wise man. :)

  796. JonS September 14th, 2012 at 11:23 pm

@SBethiaumeESPN Elias says CC Sabathia is first #Yankees pitcher to blow a lead in 5 straight starts since Kei Igawa in 2007.

But you guys keep defending him as if being unrealistically optimistic will change anything.

  797. bruceb September 14th, 2012 at 11:24 pm

Me too, Carlo. The play-offs without the Yankees will be unbearable to watch for me. But if they don’t get there, it will be because they don’t deserve it. Since going 5-1 straight after the All Star Break, they have been wretched. Injuries have played a part but that’s not a complete excuse for a club with their resources. Too many players under-performing on a daily basis. Stars like CC, Tex and Cano not living up to their billing. Cashman not foreseeing trouble ahead and shopping at Walmart when we needed to buy from Bergdorf Goodman.

  798. jmills September 14th, 2012 at 11:27 pm

Alfred, thanks for the book, thanks for being my friend. Such things help push wise. :)

  799. Shame Spencer September 14th, 2012 at 11:27 pm

JAP – Doin well, but would be better if I had a Yankee win to sleep on lol..

I just think there are too many other factors that could contribute to CC’s un-CC like season, but I don’t think his weight is one of the bigger factors. If it is though, we’ll know next season. By then we’ll be able to tell if its physical and a lingering issue.

  800. Carlo September 14th, 2012 at 11:30 pm

Cashman is a joke. He has no foresight whatsoever. Sure, foreseeing injuries is difficult, but when ur team can’t produce runs, u go get a contact bat to help that process. When u lose ur closer, u go get an arm to help ur pen since its a huge man down. When u lose a starter in march, u don’t sit there motionless when ur ace and #2 guys are both hurt at the asb. When ur 3rd baseman breaks his hand and ur offense already stinks, u don’t pickup steve pearce. Literally, he could work 3 hours a week to get done what he got done this season.

  801. RSM September 14th, 2012 at 11:34 pm

CC has been very pedestrian, and that’s a serious problem for the Yankees if they intend to play deep into October.
However, blaming his recent mediocre performance on his weight is pure conjecture and nothing more.

Great news about Trenton. The system definitely has some talent, it’s just about 2 years away which is kind of frustrating since Cashman has been at this for a pretty decent amount of time now. Is Betances pitching at all or is he on the DL?

  809. fantasygame101 September 14th, 2012 at 11:45 pm

c.c is one of the biggest problem and not the solution. There is no other way to sugarcoat this. When the team needs him the most, he failed them. He is pitching like an acceptable no. 3 sp. There is so much baggage on this team that it is hard for the few to carry them.
