12 times four: The Yankees now have four pitchers with at least 12 wins, including Kuroda, CC Sabathia, Phil Hughes and Ivan Nova, the first time that’s happened with their staff since 2003 when Roger Clemens, Mike Mussina, Andy Pettitte and David Wells were the quartet.
Grandy HR watch: Curtis Granderson needs one more homer to become the first Yankees outfielder with back-to-back 40-homer seasons since Mickey Mantle did it in 1960 and 1961. Granderson owns five homers over his last six games. Seven of his last 12 hits have come in the form of homers. He’s batting just .234 and has struck out 174 times, but he also has 92 RBI.
Update, 1:21: Impressive first for Kuroda, fans the side, albeit with a double mixed in. Now let’s see if the Yankees can score some runs for him.
Update, 1:29: Moore matches Kuroda, fans the side, too, albeit with a walk mixed in.
Update, 1:37: Making contact is difficult so far. Kuroda fans the side again, six strikeouts in two innings. His season high is 11.
Update, 1:40: After the first nine outs were on Ks, Martin manages to fly to left.
Update, 1:47: Pearce goes down swinging, stranding Jones at second. Moore looks tough so far, power lefty but with good off-speed stuff.
Update, 1:53: Only 1 K for Kuroda in the third, but still a 1-2-3 inning. He’s retired eight straight.
Update, 2:03: Jeter RBI single (one hit from 200), second on throw, third on Swisher sac.
Update, 2:09: A-Rod RBI single, 10 RBI in 13 games since his return.
Update, 2:16: Martin three-run HR, then Moore has Granderson ducking to get out of the way of a pitch. Plate ump Paul Emmel warns both sides. Joe Maddon yells out “You’re wrong,” and finally gets tossed. Anyway it’s 5-0. So much for the rookie Moore looking tough.
Update, 2:26: Kuroda finally gets some run support, but he gives one back, Zobrist blast to the right-center seats.
Update, 2:31: Moore is out after three, Brandon Gomes is on.
Update, 2:34: Nunez gets on to start the inning for the second straight time, steals second for the second straight time. Now he’s stolen third. If only you didn’t have to hold your breath on every ball hit to him. Maybe he’ll improve.
Update, 2:39: A-Rod sac fly to the wall in right-center, 6-1 in the fourth.
Update, 2:41: Cano gets gift double. That killer sun for the left fielders here. Easy fly ball falls. Jennings doesn’t touch it. But Martin grounds out to end the inning.
Update, 2:48: 1-2-3 fifth for Kuroda, now retired six straight. 9 Ks so far. Fuld got hurt on the final out running to first. Ben Francisco on to play right.
Update, 2:52: Wilson Ramos on to pitch after Jones fans to start the fifth. Jones is batting under. 200.
Update, 3:08: Bases loaded, nobody out for Rays in the sixth. Will Kuroda throw away his good fortune with all these runs for a change? Longoria up. Phelps and Logan warming.
Update, 3:11: Bad hop, two-run single past A-Rod’s glove, 6-3.
Update, 3:15: Joyce hits into a double play, but a run scores, so it’s 6-4.
Update, 3:19: Kuroda through six, allowed four hits, fanned 10. He’s at 101 pitches. Wade Davis on for the Rays.
Update, 3:25: Davis strikes out the side in the sixth. Logan will take over for Kuroda. Ichiro takes over in left. Jones moves to right. Swisher moves to first. Pearce out of the game (after failing to catch a foul pop at the rail in the sixth).
Update, 3:29: Logan gets the first batter, Phelps will come on to replace Logan.
Update, 3:39: Phelps strands runners at first and second with two outs, nice fastball at the knees to get Jennings looking.
Update, 3:51: Robertson on for the eighth. Dickerson in left. Ichiro moves to right.
Update, 3:57: It took Robertson 14 pitches to go 1-2-3. Paul Emmel has ejected another Ray. Matt Joyce wasn’t happy getting called out looking to end the inning.
Update, 4:06: Jeter up with a man on second, looking for his 200th hit.
Update, 4:07: He doesn’t get it, bouncer to short. Soriano on to try for his 40th save. He’s 5 for 5 vs. the Rays.
Update, 4:15: A-Rod makes an error, but Soriano closes it out. Yankees win, 6-4. Kuroda’s 14th win.
