TV/Radio: YES/WCBS 880

Umpires: Paul Emmel HP, Jerry Meals 1B, Scott Barry 2B, Gary Darling 3B

Weather: 72 degrees, partly cloudy

12 times four: The Yankees now have four pitchers with at least 12 wins, including Kuroda, CC Sabathia, Phil Hughes and Ivan Nova, the first time that’s happened with their staff since 2003 when Roger Clemens, Mike Mussina, Andy Pettitte and David Wells were the quartet.

Grandy HR watch: Curtis Granderson needs one more homer to become the first Yankees outfielder with back-to-back 40-homer seasons since Mickey Mantle did it in 1960 and 1961. Granderson owns five homers over his last six games. Seven of his last 12 hits have come in the form of homers. He’s batting just .234 and has struck out 174 times, but he also has 92 RBI.

Update, 1:21: Impressive first for Kuroda, fans the side, albeit with a double mixed in. Now let’s see if the Yankees can score some runs for him.

Update, 1:29: Moore matches Kuroda, fans the side, too, albeit with a walk mixed in.

Update, 1:37: Making contact is difficult so far. Kuroda fans the side again, six strikeouts in two innings. His season high is 11.

Update, 1:40: After the first nine outs were on Ks, Martin manages to fly to left.

Update, 1:47: Pearce goes down swinging, stranding Jones at second. Moore looks tough so far, power lefty but with good off-speed stuff.

Update, 1:53: Only 1 K for Kuroda in the third, but still a 1-2-3 inning. He’s retired eight straight.

Update, 2:03: Jeter RBI single (one hit from 200), second on throw, third on Swisher sac.

Update, 2:09: A-Rod RBI single, 10 RBI in 13 games since his return.

Update, 2:16: Martin three-run HR, then Moore has Granderson ducking to get out of the way of a pitch. Plate ump Paul Emmel warns both sides. Joe Maddon yells out “You’re wrong,” and finally gets tossed. Anyway it’s 5-0. So much for the rookie Moore looking tough.

Update, 2:26: Kuroda finally gets some run support, but he gives one back, Zobrist blast to the right-center seats.

Update, 2:31: Moore is out after three, Brandon Gomes is on.

Update, 2:34: Nunez gets on to start the inning for the second straight time, steals second for the second straight time. Now he’s stolen third. If only you didn’t have to hold your breath on every ball hit to him. Maybe he’ll improve.

Update, 2:39: A-Rod sac fly to the wall in right-center, 6-1 in the fourth.

Update, 2:41: Cano gets gift double. That killer sun for the left fielders here. Easy fly ball falls. Jennings doesn’t touch it. But Martin grounds out to end the inning.

Update, 2:48: 1-2-3 fifth for Kuroda, now retired six straight. 9 Ks so far. Fuld got hurt on the final out running to first. Ben Francisco on to play right.

Update, 2:52: Wilson Ramos on to pitch after Jones fans to start the fifth. Jones is batting under. 200.

Update, 3:08: Bases loaded, nobody out for Rays in the sixth. Will Kuroda throw away his good fortune with all these runs for a change? Longoria up. Phelps and Logan warming.

Update, 3:11: Bad hop, two-run single past A-Rod’s glove, 6-3.

Update, 3:15: Joyce hits into a double play, but a run scores, so it’s 6-4.

Update, 3:19: Kuroda through six, allowed four hits, fanned 10. He’s at 101 pitches. Wade Davis on for the Rays.

Update, 3:25: Davis strikes out the side in the sixth. Logan will take over for Kuroda. Ichiro takes over in left. Jones moves to right. Swisher moves to first. Pearce out of the game (after failing to catch a foul pop at the rail in the sixth).

Update, 3:29: Logan gets the first batter, Phelps will come on to replace Logan.

Update, 3:39: Phelps strands runners at first and second with two outs, nice fastball at the knees to get Jennings looking.

Update, 3:51: Robertson on for the eighth. Dickerson in left. Ichiro moves to right.

Update, 3:57: It took Robertson 14 pitches to go 1-2-3. Paul Emmel has ejected another Ray. Matt Joyce wasn’t happy getting called out looking to end the inning.

Update, 4:06: Jeter up with a man on second, looking for his 200th hit.

Update, 4:07: He doesn’t get it, bouncer to short. Soriano on to try for his 40th save. He’s 5 for 5 vs. the Rays.

Update, 4:15: A-Rod makes an error, but Soriano closes it out. Yankees win, 6-4. Kuroda’s 14th win.

Sadly I think Nunez may be trade bait in the offseason, as the Yankees probably won’t want to keep a bench guy that only backs up SS.

  2. tomingeorgia September 16th, 2012 at 1:09 pm

Let’s go, boys! Get a couple of early runs for Hiro, for a change, then he can carry us.

  3. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 16th, 2012 at 1:09 pm

Just came in. Gorgeous day in Rhody. Looks like a gorgeous day in the Bronx!

    GO HIROKI!!!

    GO YANKS!!!

    GO JAYS!!!

    GO A’S!!!

    :)

  4. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 16th, 2012 at 1:13 pm

tom, I say let hiroki keep this scoreless until the offense gets moving (which they will). He can set the tone. If he can put in an appearance similar to Hughes’s and Nova’s, our Yanks may have rounded a very big corner.

Sometimes hitters don’t get cooking until after the first time through the lineup. You want your SP to hold the fort as long as possible. Kuroda needs to do it with these weaker-hitting teams.

  5. Tar September 16th, 2012 at 1:14 pm

Do not Longoria beat you Kuroda

  6. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 16th, 2012 at 1:14 pm

What is his put-away pitch? Is he relatively good at finishing off hitters?

  7. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 16th, 2012 at 1:15 pm

    Perhaps his slider?

    :)

  8. tomingeorgia September 16th, 2012 at 1:16 pm

    Nice K on Longoria.

Trish, why don’t we break precedent today and put up a crooked number in the first?

  9. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 16th, 2012 at 1:18 pm

    THAT’S what I’m talking about!

  10. UnKnown September 16th, 2012 at 1:19 pm

    KURODA!!!!!

  11. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 16th, 2012 at 1:19 pm

    tom – because GWGGT?

    :D

  12. tomingeorgia September 16th, 2012 at 1:19 pm

Looks to me as though our boy has his sinker and slider working today. Let’s make it easy for him, Yanks.

  13. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 16th, 2012 at 1:20 pm

tom, I don’t mind at all if we put up a crooked number. I just didn’t want the team to start out deficit spending! Hiroki made sure we didn’t, at least in the first inning!

  14. jackamir September 16th, 2012 at 1:21 pm

KURODA shows some guts and makes his pitches… Now lets get the party started and score early & often. Hi everybody!

  15. Tar September 16th, 2012 at 1:22 pm

    Great job Hiroki.

Good questions Trish. I will let those who are more familiar Kuroda answer.

I have noticed a couple of times early this year, where it seemed like he didn’t want to pitch around a good hitter and got burned for it. Longoria is that hitter in this line-up. Cant give in to him.

  16. UnKnown September 16th, 2012 at 1:24 pm

Moore was tipping pitches last time out against the Yanks, hopefully he hasn’t corrected that problem yet.

  17. Tar September 16th, 2012 at 1:27 pm

    UnKnown

That’s interesting. Was it something you picked up? Or..

  18. jackamir September 16th, 2012 at 1:34 pm

    K-K-K-K-K—–Kuroda

  19. luis September 16th, 2012 at 1:35 pm

    Good afternoon guys,

The slider, CU and sinker are working

    Tar,

I think Piniella mentioned it on the booth in Tampa

  20. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 1:35 pm

Nice splitty! Moore was tapping his glove when he was about to throw his fastball. Also moore’s velo was down last game vs Balt. What is it today?

  21. Benny Blanco September 16th, 2012 at 1:36 pm

    Kkkkkkuroda

  22. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 1:36 pm

    Kkkkkk!

  23. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 16th, 2012 at 1:36 pm

    Holy crapski!

  24. tomingeorgia September 16th, 2012 at 1:36 pm

I like how Kuroda is leaving Rays hitters muttering to themselves as they trudge back to the dugout. Splitter, slider, occasional curve, and a sneaky fastball. Fun to watch!

  25. UnKnown September 16th, 2012 at 1:37 pm

    KURODA!!!!

  26. luis September 16th, 2012 at 1:37 pm

    Hi YF,

He is sitting 93-94 with the FB.

    Mo sitghing!!

  27. Tar September 16th, 2012 at 1:37 pm

    YF

At least 1 pitch was 95, he looked good in the first.

  28. jackamir September 16th, 2012 at 1:37 pm

    kkkkkkKuroda

  29. J. Alfred Prufrock September 16th, 2012 at 1:39 pm

    Indeed, primo
    :)
    A beautiful sight(ing).

  30. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 1:39 pm

Thanks, guys re: velo. Looks like he’s back to normal. Moore was puzzled as to why he was 91-3 last game.

  31. tomingeorgia September 16th, 2012 at 1:40 pm

Problem is, Moore looks just as good, with more gas. We’ll get to him, though, starting here with Andruuw.

  32. jackamir September 16th, 2012 at 1:41 pm

Football Sunday— I hope the trolls are watching the pigskin.

  33. tomingeorgia September 16th, 2012 at 1:42 pm

    I’ll take it!

  34. luis September 16th, 2012 at 1:42 pm

    Hey Primo!

Thanks for the correction ;) . Vato was money yesterday, very encouraging

  35. Tar September 16th, 2012 at 1:42 pm

He is Sitting 94, but the FB looks straight. If he doesn’t locate i can see someone hitting it a long way.

  36. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 1:42 pm

‘Druw takes one for the cause.

  37. UnKnown September 16th, 2012 at 1:43 pm

Just a bit to much loft there by the Grandyman.

  38. jackamir September 16th, 2012 at 1:44 pm

Andruw takin’ one for the team.. Grandy just missed. An extra bowl of granola & it would be 2-0

  39. UnKnown September 16th, 2012 at 1:46 pm

If Kuroda continues to get the Rays swinging away at his sinker he is going to be very successful today.

  40. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 1:46 pm

Tar, let’s hope. I’m about to pay closer attention although I’m situated too far away from this laptop screen I’m forced to watch on to observe as closely as I’d like.

  41. umbrelladoc September 16th, 2012 at 1:47 pm

Can Pearce play the outfield? When Tex comes back, we can DH Nunez, and Jones could go to the bench. I’d rather have Ichiro’s defense but if Joe insists on a righty – is Pearce a legitimate option.

  42. J. Alfred Prufrock September 16th, 2012 at 1:47 pm

    luis September 16th, 2012 at 1:42 pm

    Hey Primo!

Thanks for the correction ;) . Vato was money yesterday, very encouraging
    ///

Yes he was. Both Young Philip and Vato have done us proud. Ditto Phelpsy in his last outing. worried about C, though. I’m sure it’s killing that guy. he’s all <3

  43. Villa Nova-Ya September 16th, 2012 at 1:47 pm

    yankeefeminista -

    Saw Trenton last night.

Got to see a Turley pick-off. Wowza!

  44. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 1:47 pm

    Nice pitch..grrrr!

  45. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 1:50 pm

Villa, good for you! I had tix but had to eat them b/c I broke my ankle. Not fun, but at least hot to watch on the laptop. Turley looked really good. The CB was particularly nasty.

  46. J. Alfred Prufrock September 16th, 2012 at 1:50 pm

Moore has reallly good change, n that was his socalled “problem” pitch a while back.

  47. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 1:51 pm

    *got to watch

  48. blake September 16th, 2012 at 1:51 pm

Moore was dominant like this early in Tampa too then lost his command in the middle of the game and the Yanks got to him…..we have to hope he does the same today because when he has everything going hes darn near unhittable.

  49. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 1:52 pm

    The Kids are alright! :)

  50. tomingeorgia September 16th, 2012 at 1:52 pm

    yankeefem,
Ouch! Not a good thing. In a cast? Get better quick.

  51. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 1:53 pm

    Kkkkkkk

  52. J. Alfred Prufrock September 16th, 2012 at 1:53 pm

yankeefem – sending you Archangel Raphael rays of <3 & healing :)

  53. UnKnown September 16th, 2012 at 1:53 pm

Rays are already taking more of a patient approach at the plate. If that is the case Kuroda needs to paint strikes on the first two pitches and make them pay for just standing there with the bat.

  54. Tar September 16th, 2012 at 1:54 pm

    YF
    Lo siento mucho

I’ve had a nightmare of a time with my ankle. Multiple surgeries, etc. I feel for you.

  55. Benny Blanco September 16th, 2012 at 1:54 pm

    Kuroda is locked in!!!

  56. jackamir September 16th, 2012 at 1:54 pm

So far, so good. Now is the time for a crooked number….

  57. blake September 16th, 2012 at 1:55 pm

Hiro has the kitchen sink working so far today…..throwing everything for strikes

I want another “Nunie……to the Moonie!”

  58. J. Alfred Prufrock September 16th, 2012 at 1:55 pm

Moore’s a pleasure to watch when it doesn’t impact you.

  59. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 1:55 pm

Thanks, Tom, Pruf! Yes in a cast and pretty immobile, but hanging in there.

  60. blake September 16th, 2012 at 1:56 pm

    YF,

Sorry about the bum ankle….never broken mine but many bad sprains….no fun.

  61. J. Alfred Prufrock September 16th, 2012 at 1:56 pm

blake, I’ll take another of those, long as I can avoid having to hear Sterling’s call, LOL

  62. tomingeorgia September 16th, 2012 at 1:56 pm

    JAP,
And he’s a pain in the butt when it does.

  63. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 1:57 pm

    “‘ I want another “Nunie……to the Moonie!’”

Just don’t as long as you’re not in the car. Don’t Sterling and drive! ;)

  64. Villa Nova-Ya September 16th, 2012 at 1:57 pm

    yankeefeminista -

Ouch. Take care of the ankle!

Yes, the curveball is a nasty pitch for him.

Tough to watch the other team celebrate on the field. :(

So disappointing to see lots of empty seats. :( Really don’t understand why for a Saturday night game. Playoff game!

  65. UnKnown September 16th, 2012 at 1:58 pm

Jeter will probably be bunting here.

  66. blake September 16th, 2012 at 1:58 pm

If someone offered me Moore or Strasburg for the next 10 years Kd take Moore……I like his delivery better and think hes less likely to get hurt …..plus he signed that cheapo contract.

  67. Tar September 16th, 2012 at 1:59 pm

The Cap’n is going to run into a FB!!

  68. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 1:59 pm

Thanks, Blake. Just hope I can attend Yanks playoff games. I’ll wheelchair to my seats if I have to.

    Go Jeet!

  69. tomingeorgia September 16th, 2012 at 2:00 pm

Because of the blackout yesterday, I hear the “Nunie to the Moonie” call, hard to believe how bad that guy is. Had to keep asking questions here, because I learned nothing of the game listening to him.

  70. blake September 16th, 2012 at 2:00 pm

“Just don’t as long as you’re not in the car. Don’t Sterling and drive!”

Unfortunately I am always driving when I Sterling!

  71. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 2:01 pm

Thanks, Villa! Yes, turned the game after right after last pitch so I wouldn’t have to watch. Ugh. Sorry that Austin had to be shut down and I hope that the ankle isn’t chronic.

  72. UnKnown September 16th, 2012 at 2:01 pm

Sweet. Now a classic Jeter AB going the other way here.

  73. blake September 16th, 2012 at 2:02 pm

    Nunez totally changes this lineup

  74. J. Alfred Prufrock September 16th, 2012 at 2:02 pm

Nuney could school Gardy on disrupting the pitcher.

  75. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 2:02 pm

Blake I figured as much. I wonder how many accidents Sterling has caused.

    Jeeeeeet!!!!!!

  89. Tar September 16th, 2012 at 2:04 pm

  90. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 16th, 2012 at 2:04 pm

    Good for Nick.

Yankee bunting. Oh yeah!!! Better late than never! These are the Yanks you know. They can do anything they set their minds to doing!

They have to keep Nunez in the lineup at least vs lefties the rest of the season….it adds an entire other layer to what they can do offensively

  94. luis September 16th, 2012 at 2:06 pm

    Will they give in?

  95. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 2:06 pm

“They have to keep Nunez in the lineup at least vs lefties the rest of the season”

Yeah you have to wonder how much the offense suffered with losing both GGBG and Nunie.

  102. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 16th, 2012 at 2:07 pm

Would that be defined as an RISP?

If so, would that indicate multidimensional hitting?

    Just curious.

I’m loving this Yankees inning here.

  114. Benny Blanco September 16th, 2012 at 2:09 pm

Alex, is just a smart baseball player. People underestimate this aspect of alex’s game.

  115. blake September 16th, 2012 at 2:10 pm

Boy Alex is playing some good baseball right now…..

  116. WMD September 16th, 2012 at 2:10 pm

girardi needs stay the $%^& away from the pokemon binder. bunting a runner from 2nd to 3rd in the 3rd inning. that’s just desperate baseball. as if the yankees pitching and bullpen can hold a 2 run lead for the next 6 innings. just asinine. could be a big freaking inning here. and if you get a big inning maybe, just maybe you don’t need to use robertson or soriano today. off day or no off day tomorrow

    ==================================

:D Actually it is, especially the way it happened. He was 0-2, worked the count to 3-2, and then he goes oppo, which means he wasn’t trying to hit it out. That’s how most homer streaks happen, the moment you start to try to hit it out, they no longer go out, but they turn in to pop outs.

  157. Tar September 16th, 2012 at 2:19 pm

  160. tucker September 16th, 2012 at 2:20 pm

Yanks are at their best when they work the count, let the big innings come to them. Each player in this inning did not try to do too much. Then Martin gets a nice get-it-over pitch on a 3-2 count, then bam! … When individual players are swinging for the fences on 0-1 counts or 1-2 counts, this O doesn’t work A’s well.

What a time for it to all start coming together!

I’m going to try to find that scholarly article that talks about the psychological effects of stellar starting pitching on flagging offenses…

Of course, Moore’s pitching is helping – but we can’t use that as the primary determinant since we’ve been told that the Yankees should have pounded the tar out of “awful” pitchers like Cook – and they did not.

    Anyway – just wow.

I cannot discount the new life breathed into this team with the return of Alex, and now Nova. And new additions the lineup.

And it’s only going to get better. Andy comes back Tuesday.

  172. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 2:24 pm

Moore, young pitcher with growing pains, but that’s part of the process. One of my Dave young pitchers but happy to knock him out. :)

“Don’t remember Kuroda hitting anybody this year, do you?”

I dont know….Im sure hes hit somebody. I dont think itll affect him cause hes been around…..but when the ump warns both teams like that for no reason then some pitchers might get tentative about throwing inside as they dont want to get tossed. I just wish umpires would use their brains occasionally

  192. UnKnown September 16th, 2012 at 2:33 pm

Never is it probably a good thing for a pitcher to sit for a long time between innings, but considering the alternative which is the offense goes 1-2-3, I think any pitcher would say they want the 5 runs.

With that said, I don’t think you can automatically say that the Zobrist HR happened strictly because Kuroda sat a long time in between innings.

Remember Zobrist just missed a HR in the 1st inning by about a foot and went for a double. So maybe Zobrist is just seeing the ball well from Kuroda.

He dominated the rest of the inning.

I can relate to that feeling ;) Excellent situational hitting for a change. even though I have to say that i saw some of this yesterday as well, the first two runs that we scored today were plated by the same guys that brought those great runs scored by Ichiro and Cano. ;)

    FTR,

I would rather have Montero than Martin. The latter has to actually work to have this approach, the other has it naturally. But I am certainly happy that he is trying hard to bat according to the situation.

What an addition Nunez has been to the team. Some youth was needed

  202. 4 NYY September 16th, 2012 at 2:35 pm

Anyone knocking Martin today ? Hmmm…..He’s been quite good lately and out of the 5 spot !

Kuroda, as I and a number on here said when he was aquired, was the kind of pitcher that could pitch anywhere in the world and be successful. Doesn’t mean he’s the best in the world, just a very good pitcher. And our best starter this yr., bar none. Hope he’s back next year.

Nunez, I feel, will be back next year, unless involved in a big trade. He may not be a great defensive player, but I think he can become better and is capable still of backing up other spots as well as SS. We need the speed, as proven today.

Jeter, WHAT MORE CAN YOU SAY ?

    Did I say SPEED ? NUNIE !!!

  203. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 16th, 2012 at 2:35 pm

  219. Villa Nova-Ya September 16th, 2012 at 2:40 pm

Only problem with being the heir apparent to Jeter (much like being heir apparent to Mo) is that Jeter is in no hurry to vacate the position…

    ;)

So, I’d love to somehow see them let Nunie learn at least an outfield position. Maybe he can’t be the super-ute they thought he could be; but he was definitely missed this season. They need to find a place for him, and let him spell Jeter every now and then, and then step into the spot in a couple of years, once Jeter is finished.

Nunie is just fun to watch hit.

    ///

He’s doing a fine job against LHP lately.

  239. umbrelladoc September 16th, 2012 at 2:49 pm

How good is Jeter? Not only is he keeping the team alive with big hits, when it becomes obvious that Nunez will only play SS, he gets injured just at the right time to get Nunez in the lineup. Even his injuries are clutch.

  240. UnKnown September 16th, 2012 at 2:49 pm

It’s going to be tough for Joe to deny Kuroda the ball for Game 1.

I mean it’s still to early to be putting things like that in stone. There are several factors that go into those decisions I’m sure, but Kuroda has definitely pitched better than CC this year.

  241. UnKnown September 16th, 2012 at 2:50 pm

Ideally, Kuroda would pitch at home where he has been Cy Young worthy, but I don’t think you can hold Kuroda back till Game 3 of the ALDS.

Benny Blanco September 16th, 2012 at 2:35 pm
Nunez is so much more aggressive than gardner…base stealing wise.

    ——–

In his career, Nunez has a SB or CS 27% of the time he has an opportunity to run. Gardner is at 25%.

    ///

Yes, he’s always fooled around with his swing and stance. You know, as much as I wish 2007 Alex were still in the bank, it’s been a pleasure to watch him make adjustments. He deserves a great deal of credit for his approach since coming back, and all the little things he brings to being a Yankee.

  245. luis September 16th, 2012 at 2:54 pm

    LGY,

Is it because Nunez is more aggressive and Gardner more selective in picking his spots to steal? Those the former just runs more?

  246. Bret The Hitman September 16th, 2012 at 2:54 pm

Nunez has immense raw talent with his swing and his speed. He hits the ball hard, makes contact and runs all over the place. He is exactly the type of player the lineup needs desperately for balance. He’s just one individual but his unique skillset makes the offense so much more well-rounded overall.

I’m afraid that was only because the runner was hurt running out of the box. Good play to stay with it though.

  248. LGY September 16th, 2012 at 2:55 pm

It is kind of twisted but Jeter’s injury may be one of the best things to happen to this team, especially since it hasn’t affected his hitting.

Girardi was content trotting Pearce and Jones out there everyday, but it looks like Nunez has forced his way into the lineup.

I’ve been hoping for weeks that Nunez would get a chance vs LHP. But Ibanez is something like 3 for his last 50 so I think you have to play Nunez everyday at this point. Just adds a different dimension to the lineup and brings some energy to this team.

  249. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 2:56 pm

Blake, it probably gives Alex a little more loft. He really didn’t take long to find his rhythm despite the layoff.

  250. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 2:58 pm

LGY, they should have brought Nunez up as an option a month ago vs LHP. Instead they insisted on their vets and Aaaa players.

  251. blake September 16th, 2012 at 2:58 pm

    LGY,

Also if it builds a little confidence in Nunez defensively…..but yea…..they need Nunez in the ljneup vs lefties…..its pretty obvious

  252. LGY September 16th, 2012 at 2:59 pm

Don’t think Nunez is necessarily more aggressive. I think it’s more a product of him playing a lot less than Gardner.

Gardner’s first two years in the league he ran 27% of the time also.

  253. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 3:00 pm

  258. tucker September 16th, 2012 at 3:02 pm

Nunez should be a starting MLB shortstop, just no room with Jeter. I think his defense would improve with regular playing time. He just needs the repetitions that come with regular playing time. His bat and speed are obviously MLB ready.

My guess is the Yanks trade him this offseason.

  259. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 3:02 pm

Yeah having watched both for years, Nunez is a better base stealer IMO. Just knows when to take off and doesn’t doubt his ability to get there. Gardner’s good but too methodical.

  260. J. Alfred Prufrock September 16th, 2012 at 3:04 pm

Adams really looks comfortable at 3B now. It was a shrewd move, considering Robinson Cano is 29 and the 2B. Adams really needs to get a chance next season. He can back up Alex, spell Cano from time to time, hit lefties, etc.

Bichette and Andujar are a long, long way off.

  261. 4 NYY September 16th, 2012 at 3:05 pm

Does anyone think Jones will be on post season roster ? I know, all year on, so still on ! Ughh !

I don’t think he can get worse, so maybe……. he’ll help somehow.

  262. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 3:05 pm

Probably want Adams to get more comfortable at 3B plus still coming off that injury. But he’s availed himself well at 3B; hopefully he gets a shot next year.

  265. Bret The Hitman September 16th, 2012 at 3:07 pm

I wouldn’t deal a starting middle infielder who is cost-controlled unless I’m getting back a starting infielder. For example, if the Padres inquired on Nunez, I’d counter with a demand for Chase Headley with Nunez headlining the package. Otherwise, I’m keeping Nunez.

Would Girardi pull him for a relief pitcher? If this were the post, would he do it? I’m a fan of SP getting the job done. I’m not saying he won’t, just that these are the situations that try men’s (and women’s) soul.

I feel bad for Andruw. He must have some real issues with his legs. It has to be that, so I can’t understand them going with him in OF. If they want a defender upgrade and a power hitter vs. lefties, they can go with Mesa. But with him come his issues against offspeed.

Mustelier does not strike me as beyond mediocre in the OF, but haven’t seen him a whole lot. His bat has looked good when I’ve seen him, but again, I have not seen enough of him to really advocate for him. He seems to hit line drives to all fields though.

Adams and Joseph I’ve seen a ton of. Both could help the lineup now, I believe.

    Now I want Phelps in.

This isn’t the kind of SP I was talking about, especially with an offense-poor lineup.

Hope Kuroda wins the game. I want him to get the W. He worked hard for it. He has been a great addition to the Ys rotation. However, of late he hasn’t been able to hold a lead (not talking today). People talk about the lack of run support he’s gotten. Well he was given plenty today.

Maybe he’s gotten tired from having to work so hard to help the rotation. However, I want as sure a thing as we can get. My top two at this point are Hughes and Nova. I want to say my top three are – and add Andy. I believe it’s going to happen, but we obviously have to wait until Tuesday to see what he has.

My postseason rotation has been up, down and all around. CC has been eliminated from it, at least as of right now – despite the fact that he almost unequivocally will be in it, a la Girardi.

Until today I was gung ho Kuroda, Hughes, Nova, Pettitte (yes Pettitte sight unseen, I’m taking a leap of faith.) Not sure I feel that Kuroda is the guy anymore.

My standards for Yankee SP might be a bit more strigent than those of some others, so take that into account when reading this post.

  312. LGY September 16th, 2012 at 3:23 pm

    Stoneburner

You expect a SP to be perfect? Kuroda’s SO/BB ratio this game is 5.0. Walking two batters in a game especially when you strike out 10 is perfectly acceptable.

Under normal circumstances, probably 99 times out of 100 that inning ends with 1 run at most. Bad luck happens. That’s why stats that seperate what a pitcher can control are so important. For example, his FIP today is 2.93.

  313. luis September 16th, 2012 at 3:23 pm

Kuroda has been the clear cut ace of the staff. He lost command on that inning, but he has been money so far for the season, the only reason he doesn’t have 16-17 wins by now is the lack of offensive output from the team.

  314. blake September 16th, 2012 at 3:24 pm

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle writes that it is highly unlikely that we will see suspended outfielder Melky Cabrera appear in a postseason game for the Giants. Doing so would require leaving a roster spot open until the sixth playoff game of the year, which would be a sizable commitment considering that they don’t know what he could bring to the table. Beyond that, the Giants are likely upset with Cabrera on a personal level.

Straw, absolutely know you’re right. That’s why I said “as of today” also. If CC came back and won all the rest of his games with ease, of course I’d be right back there wanting him in the starting rotation.

I have nothing but admiration for the guy. I think he’s a workhorse, he never complains, he has carried this team on his back in the past.

I am purely thinking pragmatics at this point. These are faceless pitchers to me. I’m looking at what we are getting currently from our pitchers. I don’t care what they’ve done the rest of the season. If we went based on that, Nova wouldn’t even be pitching!

A more interesting scenario is, if the Yanks end up in the WC game, who starts? Not sure I’d go with Sabathia there. Not sure who I would pick…thoughts?

  332. luis September 16th, 2012 at 3:32 pm

KURODA stats: 3.17 ERA, 195 innings, 132 ERA+, 5 to 1 k to BB ratio, whip:1.119, 6,43 k per inning ( that’s his only blemish if you can call that a blemish). Those are very ace like numbers.

  333. LGY September 16th, 2012 at 3:32 pm

    Trisha

How can you talk about patience and “waiters get good tips” when you are writing off CC and KURODA based on a few starts and penciling in Nova off ONE start?

Doesn’t get more knee jerk than that.

    “Trisha,

They still were close games. We need a couple of blowouts wins”

“They were nail biters…..good starting pitching but Hughes’s gane was 2-0 and Nova’s was 5-3…..Alex knocked in an insurance run yesterday to make that one slightly less nerve whracking.”

I love close tight games. I’d rather see those than blowouts. I also like low-scoring games. But that’s because I value pitching and defense over offense. Not to the total exclusion of offense, please note.

I’m not worried about today’s game. But I’m also crazy about a pitcher who had a 4-run lead giving back those 4 runs. Period.

Because of that, I was definitely a proponent of Freddy being put in the pen. I don’t play favorites (except for Soriano :) )

Not happy about any SP coughing up leads.

There are a lot of tired vets on this team that have the power sapped from them because over usage…

  367. The Return of Stoneburner September 16th, 2012 at 3:54 pm

I do think there is a need for some apologies about the Yanks being unable to develop their own pitching – it has not been perfect – but pretty decent here and especially on the horizon.

The Yanks have five pitchers on the staff that are homegrown and have played a role in this September: Hughes, Nova, Phelps, DRob, and Joba. The two big FA acquisitions on the staff are C.C. and Soriano. Logan was acquired via young pitching depth in Vizcaino (who is out injured and has since been traded by the Braves – who know a thing or two about evaluating pitching).

The Yanks then have on the horizon some nice young arms as no. 4 or 5 types in Nik Turley, Brett Marshall, and perhaps even Adam Warren – and then the higher end types with Banuelos (if healthy), Ramirez, Campos (if healthy), and then DePaula – to say nothing of another young crop Gallegos, Rincon, Vargas, Bautista and company behind them.

And then to say nothing of the young pen arms coming in Montgomery, Pinder, Goody, Nuding, Whitley, Clairborne, and company.

I do not think it has been fair and some credit is due to the young pitching that has already performed at the mlb level and that is on the way – - – -

Very true. But I am very excited about the potential of having a homegrown OF in 2014-2015. For the immediate future – i.e. 2013 – things are going to have to be very creative before Austin, Flores, and company hopefully arrive. The infield is just too locked up now – except for catcher – but I am optimistic about JR, Gary, and company.

But again – very true – the offensive prospects are far behind the pitching side – but at least the first wave was up for AA playoffs. And Cojo, Adams, Nunez, Zolio, and Mesa can hopefully fill in as bench help until the greater upside prospects arrive – possibly in 2014 – - – -

Video game numbers for Hicks and Cruz :)

  426. luis September 16th, 2012 at 4:34 pm

Another excellent game for several reasons:

Kuroda pitched very well, despite that 6th inning. Some unlucky breaks lead to not so good numbers in the end. Still, he has been our best pitcher of the season.

The offense has shown different ways to score, that’s a welcomed change. Martin had the most important at bat and he delivered with a very good situational approach. Nunez continues to impress me, I just hope that they would have given him a chance sooner. I hope that they bring Adams and Mustelier as well. Arod has shown that he is probably the best situational hitter on this team still.

The BP is getting stronger. Nova has added the depth in the rotation to allow Phelps to fill the role of the 7th inning guy that can go multiple innings. More importantly, Rapada and Eppley are not getting over exposed anymore and it’s showing. Two crisp ball games this weekend, hopefully they keep getting stronger and peak at the right moment ( PS ).

    later guys

I can live with the following bench and OF next year – will never happen – but – - -

    Against RHP

    RF – Zolio
    CF – Granderson
    LF – Gardner

    Against LHP

    RF – Mesa
    CF – Granderson
    LF – Scott Hairston

    Bench:

Two OFers who are not playing b/c of splits
    Adams – 3b, 2b
    COJO – 1b and 2b
    Nunez – SS
Romine – catcher (of course – depending on how he looks in AZFL and ST)

  432. bruceb September 16th, 2012 at 4:49 pm

Big win…and with only three games out of 16 left against a team over .500 (Oakland) we really have no excuses if we don’t clinch the division now.

  433. jmirjmir September 16th, 2012 at 4:55 pm

Such a huge, huge win. Have to take care of the spoilers, but boy, this was a big one to get.

Great job by the Yanks today. Very pumped. Go Nunie!

That fan oughta be hung by his heels from the parapet. That dude totally cost us a run. Terrible job. Box seats do suck, it seems.

  434. MTU September 16th, 2012 at 4:58 pm

Kuroda’s performance today shows why just looking at a boxscore can be pretty deceptive.

IMO he was much better than his line indicated.

    MTU,
Kuroda and Phelps can caddie for each other if Phelps doesn’t start any more this year. Interesting to see what our staff looks like next year, but I’ll take what we have for the rest of this one.

  437. UnKnown September 16th, 2012 at 5:04 pm

    Mister Tom-

The staff seems to be rounding into form again just in time.

Anxious to see what AP delivers Tues.

I won’t be surprised to find out that CC was nursing some sort of injury after the season ends.

People say the Yankees can’t develop pitchers but in Hughes, Nova, and Phelps you have three good ones.

    Kudos to him as well.

  443. UnKnown September 16th, 2012 at 5:12 pm

Kuroda was awesome today. I would start him every game from here to the end of the season if it was humanely possible. Anyone who actually watched the game saw him get victimized by some incredibly bad luck in the 6th.

The type of bad luck that could get any pitcher. He got two ground balls in the sixth: one that went for a very weak infield single and the other was a DP ball that took a wicked hop by Alex.

No way you can pin that on Kuroda, unfortunately people try to do just that. SMH

  460. MTU September 16th, 2012 at 5:35 pm

    Al-

I wasn’t when the Pitching seemed to be falling apart but now that it appears to be rounding into form my optimism level is rising along with it.

I always said they would live or die by their Pitching this season.

Hoping for a decent outing from Andy.

  461. MTU September 16th, 2012 at 5:37 pm

Man that Nunez can steal some bags.

    Gotta love that.

  462. MTU September 16th, 2012 at 5:39 pm

I looked back today on him and came to realize he had arthroscopic surgery for a bone spur and and inflamed tissue.

I wondered if the bone spur was pre-existing or the result of that diving catch ?

He is a real difference maker if he can just stay healthy.

Him and Nunez give you some serious speed on the bases.

Paul Swydan of Fangraphs believes that if Rafael Soriano opts out of his deal with the Yankees in search of a multi-year deal with an average value of $14MM per year, either he’ll be disappointed or the team that signs him will be. Yesterday, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports opined that Soriano would be making a mistake if he cut the cord on his three-year, $35MM contract in search of a better deal.

  468. tomingeorgia September 16th, 2012 at 5:45 pm

    BIG AL,
There re a few of us here that keep a level head, who know that if you’re in the Majors, you’ve earned it nd don’t need the scorn of a bunch of never weres. Those labelled AAAA types are better thn 99% of everybody who ever played the game. Our team is in 1st place, and a whole bunch of guys, not stars, got us there and have kept us there, for which they have my total respect and admiration. The men I was sending out in my message bove have all erned their pay with us, and I wish them all well.

Now, get better, CC, we need you. Dmned “A” key.

  469. BIG AL September 16th, 2012 at 5:46 pm

    MTU -

“No BA but a lot of power.” Are you talking about Martin or Granderson, or both. :)

I’ll say this, if I had to choose between either Martin or Granderson to hit with the game on the line, I think I’d take Martin, JMHO.

  470. MTU September 16th, 2012 at 5:46 pm

I expect Soriano to opt out as well.

I actually think the opposite of what Rosenthal suggests.

I think he would be foolish not to capitalize on this year’s success.

No telling what next year brings.

Soriano has a checkered injury history.

May as well strike while the iron is hot is my view.

I agree, and they served the team well. It just shows you can’t over use players at that stage of their career. It’s time to infuse the team with more youth, and we have several options ready to take the next step, IMO.

  474. jmills September 16th, 2012 at 5:51 pm

    Big Al,… I still want Seaver. :)

  475. MTU September 16th, 2012 at 5:53 pm

  476. BIG AL September 16th, 2012 at 5:54 pm

    Mike -

I would shop him, if I felt I could replace him with a better, younger player. Yes, Granderson does have power, but I’d give up some of that power for a much more consistant player. Granderson has become a much more one dimentional player, does not hit well with RISP, and is no longer a steal threat.

  477. MTU September 16th, 2012 at 5:57 pm

    Al-

What type of return do you think you could get for a guy like Grandy ?

ML ready player, Good AAA prospect ? Less ?

MTU, the O’s are a curious bunch. I take my hat off to them.

  479. tomingeorgia September 16th, 2012 at 6:00 pm

    BIG AL,
There are young, hungry guys out there just dying for the chance to prove themselves big leaguers. Some will make it, most won’t. But, as we’ve seen, the cheap aging vet still has place. If Swisher goes, Hunter would be fine for a year or two, for instance. Kuroda, while no longer cheap, is fine, too. It will be fun to see who Cashmn signs to minor league deals this winter. We lways find a use for them.

  480. MTU September 16th, 2012 at 6:03 pm

They deserve a lot of credit for their season.

No one predicted that they’d be where they are.

    Everyone expected them to fade.

Randy mentioned the Showalter, Duquette, Peterson combo.

    Apparently, it’s a dynamic one.

The final credit always has to go to the players themselves IMO.

  481. BIG AL September 16th, 2012 at 6:04 pm

  489. BIG AL September 16th, 2012 at 6:12 pm

    Mike -

No, Ciriaco was a stanout SS in AAA, and only moved to 3B because of the Middlebrooks injury.

I think he will have a very stong career. He hits, fields and runs very well.

A team needs to be strong up the middle, and I still hate we traded away A-Jax, a player coming into his own, and IMHO, will have a much better MLB career than Granderson, when all is said and done.

  490. MTU September 16th, 2012 at 6:12 pm

Great win today and a great series overall.

Yanks have started to do some of the little things that help you win games in addition to obviously pitching better and swinging the bats.

The offense came through today and made ir happen….Kudos to Nunie who sort jump started everything.

Kuroda was great for most of the start…..the Rays lucky rabbits foot got them a few runs there but it wasnt enough….great job by the pen….Phelps may maje a big difference out there now as they can go to him in some key spots as a bridge to DRob.

Yanks have weathered the rough part if their schedule and will hold at least a one game lead…..the schedule favors them now….all they have to do is win games they win.

  503. BIG AL September 16th, 2012 at 6:22 pm

I do not think it has been fair and some credit is due to the young pitching that has already performed at the mlb level and that is on the way – – – -

    ———————

They have definitely improved from where they were yrs ago but as we all know there is still some heavy lifting to do. It all goes back to Generation Trey if two of the 3 pitchers reached their ceiling or came close to it there wouldn’t be so much resentment toward how they develop pitchers.

    Good evening,… Alfred.

  514. MTU September 16th, 2012 at 6:34 pm

    Tom-

    Were there any ?

Maybe you are confusing this place with Oklahoma ?

    :)

  515. BIG AL September 16th, 2012 at 6:35 pm

    Tom -

I thought the only thing Utah had was snakes and spiders, and an old guy that keeps bothering them with his hikes.

  516. MTU September 16th, 2012 at 6:36 pm

    Al-

They could but why would he want to play for them when he could play for us.

    ;)

  517. BIG AL September 16th, 2012 at 6:37 pm

    Mike -

    Philly Steaks!

  518. MTU September 16th, 2012 at 6:38 pm

    Al-

    You forgot to mention sand.

    :)

  519. tomingeorgia September 16th, 2012 at 6:38 pm

    MTU,
Nope, no Utahns, but if there were any, we wouldn’t get them anyway.

  520. MTU September 16th, 2012 at 6:39 pm

    Al-

The food in NY is way better.

    Everyone knows that !

    ;)

  521. BIG AL September 16th, 2012 at 6:39 pm

    Mike -

OK, I forgot about the sand, afterall I thought it was all in that big box you play in.

  522. J. Alfred Prufrock September 16th, 2012 at 6:40 pm

    Odds,

The Joba fiasco isn’t the only thing, but it’s the biggest screwup, as we’ve discussed many times. The sort of systemic, institutionalized issue seems to be the weird handling of the arms on the farm, not letting guys work out of trouble, stuuf like that. sorry typing with one arm. any way, I still don’t know how much is laid at the feet of Nardi, or if it resides higher up in the chain of command.

  523. MTU September 16th, 2012 at 6:41 pm

    Yeah Al.

True. A really, really big box.

    :)

  524. jr1212 September 16th, 2012 at 6:42 pm

Just got back from the game. Kuroda looked dominant and should have gave up only a couple of runs if it was not for the wicked bounce.

I wish I could bring the same luck to the Yankees as I did for the Giants last year. I went to the Giants-Jets game last year, and the Giants went on to win the Super Bowl. Also goin on vacation tomorrow, last time I went on vacation was in 2009…..

  525. BIG AL September 16th, 2012 at 6:43 pm

    Mike -

I think Trout is, and will continue to be a great player, if he stays healthy.

The way he plays the game. all out, might lead to injuries that could cost him. You can’t tell a player to be less aggressive, I wish he were a Yankee, but, I do enjoy watching him play, he’s special.

    MTU September 16th, 2012 at 6:30 pm

I’ve decided that all great young ML playerere born in NJ need to come home and play for the Yankees.

Which means we get both Trout and Heyward.

    Maybe David Price too ?

    Like my plan ?

    Raises hand!!! :)

  527. MTU September 16th, 2012 at 6:44 pm

Does anyone think Cashman would profit from a night a Holiday Inn Express ?

Oh wait a minute he’s already done that. Sorry.

    :(

  528. BIG AL September 16th, 2012 at 6:45 pm

Got to go. Y’all have a great day!

    GO YANKEES!

  529. MTU September 16th, 2012 at 6:46 pm

    Al-

Trout is is more than just a fish. He’s a stud.

    :)

    Yes, and I hate it!

    SMH crap big crap

  531. J. Alfred Prufrock September 16th, 2012 at 6:47 pm

How about a 1-way ride on the tras siberian express?

  532. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 6:48 pm

I’m in too, MTU. But… Trout is from South Jersey, so more from the Philly area, and a Phillies fan (boo!), so make sure that the stipulation is that players from the entire state of Jersey go to the NY Yankees, even if Trout isn’t a happy camper … at first. ;)

  533. J. Alfred Prufrock September 16th, 2012 at 6:48 pm

    *trans siberian express

  534. MTU September 16th, 2012 at 6:48 pm

    I’ve gotta run too.

Dinner and then two of my fave shows “Into the West”, and “Hell on Wheels”.

  535. J. Alfred Prufrock September 16th, 2012 at 6:49 pm

that’s right YF! We sure have our share of Philth fans in Princeton!

  536. MTU September 16th, 2012 at 6:50 pm

    Roger that YF, so stipulated.

Thanks for pointing that important clause out.

    :)

I think Nardi takes some of the blame he’s in charge of all those arms. But the ultimate blame lies with Cashman. He is the one that hires the scouts and development staff

  538. MTU September 16th, 2012 at 6:51 pm

Steal all of the Tampa development people.

    See. That was easy.

    :)

  539. tomingeorgia September 16th, 2012 at 6:52 pm

See you in the morning, all. We’ll be in first plce, no mtter what happens in Oklnd. I’ll fix the key, promise.

  540. J. Alfred Prufrock September 16th, 2012 at 6:52 pm

Odds, they’d better not screw around with Jose Ramirez!

Even though couldn’t screw up J-Ram’s FB and CU, and they did teach him the slider. ;)

  543. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 6:56 pm

    Even *they couldn’t

  544. yankeefeminista September 16th, 2012 at 6:58 pm
