This is actually a REALLY big game for both teams. If they Yankees win, they pretty much lock up a playoff spot. If the Rays want any chance at a wild card birth, they can’t lose today. Obviously The rays will still have a chance to gain games on the orioles themselves.. but a loss today would be a major blow to the rays.

If the Yankees go a modest 10-7 ( counting today) the rest of the way, the rays would have to go 14-3. I believe the same would be true for the Angels. So… a Win today pretty much locks up a playoff spot for the Yankees.

And the love fest with jones continues. Unreal

    No surprises.

I wonder… just how many compromising photos of Joe G. does Andruw Jones have?

Since August 17th, Andruw Jones is 6-44 (.136) with 0 HR and 2 RBI and yet he still starts just about every game against LHP.

    amazing

No Ichiro at the bottom of the lineup in RF is just plain stupid, and Swish should be at 1B. The trio of Ichiro-Nunez-Jeter (or Nunez-Ichiro-Jeter) makes things happen. Girardi continues to put out something less than his best lineup. And I am getting sick & tired of two .205 hitters batting 5-6. I understand why he plays Martin but Jones is a black hole in the lineup. If he insists on playing a AAA hitter (Pearce) at 1B, then put Ichiro in LF. I really worry about Girardi sometimes. It took Jeter’s bum ankle for him to remember Nunez at all.

DavidWaldstein Moises Alou in the Yankees clubhouse area.

    Put him in LF.

It is what it is. This will be our lineup vs lefties from here on out. Lets just be happy that nunez is in the lineup. Kuroda Will carry us today.

What’s going on with Derek? Any reason he’s still DHing? I may have missed it.

Girardi said earliest Jeter plays the field is Tuesday.

  9. Nick in SF September 16th, 2012 at 11:50 am

He aggravated a left ankle injury a few days ago.

Gotcha.. not ideal but I think it’s the right move to get him some rest. YES aired a montage of Jeter looking uncomfortable after various plays a week or so ago…. it’s crazy how good he’s been.

A win today would unofficially make the Rays catching the Yankees near impossible.

Angels would sit in a better position to catch NYY for the W.C. if they can’t hold off the O’s for the East.

Really excited to watch Kuroda deal today.

Nunez deserve to be given a shot as regular SS somewhere… It’s unfortunate he is blocked by Jeter who is having a renaissance at the age of 39. If the Yanks don’t trade him they need to find him ABs somewhere.

  13. Shame Spencer September 16th, 2012 at 11:53 am

Thanks Nick – I remember the play, but I didn’t know if there was any more to it since I didn’t get to see yesterdays game. I wasn’t sure if he tweaked something else or reaggravated another lingering injury.

I think the Yanks plan was for Nunez to build serious trade value at SS in Scranton but his thumb injury altered that plan.

If he continues to play reasonably well defensively he’ll be a valuable piece in a package to pursue a quality, young OF in the off-season.

If not, they need to platoon him and Dickerson in LF or RF and save $ 10 M on Swish. I’m not sure those guys wouldn’t come close to the overall productivity the Yanks are getting now and would improve defense and speed on bases.

Those are the kinds of chances you have to take in order to get the payroll under control.

  15. Niblick September 16th, 2012 at 12:09 pm

Swish has has an OPS of .841 during his 4 years with the Yankees. It’s ludicrous to think that a Nunez/Dickerson platoon could come anywhere close to giving the team that kind of productivity. Plus Nunez can’t play the outfield.

Some support for Kuroda-san today onegeishemas, lineup.

Nunez in will surely help that cause.

Sadly, Trenton got bounced yesterday in EL Championship, so those guys (like Adams) are now available. Hope Adams gets a shake one of these games. Joseph (SWB) also must be floating around somewhere: ditto, Mustelier. I don’t, realistically, think we’ll see any of these guys though.

  17. J. Alfred Prufrock September 16th, 2012 at 12:16 pm

    Too bad Swisher isn’t a full-time RHB.

  18. J. Alfred Prufrock September 16th, 2012 at 12:17 pm

If we manage to get some actual breathing room, Jeter needs to take some full days off. I’d even do that now, although I know that is out of the question by their – and his – thinking.

  19. 86w183 September 16th, 2012 at 12:35 pm

    ************************************************************************

Swisher’s OPS this year is .795 and he is probably past his prime as evidenced by him turning 32 in November and the fact that his OPS has gone .870, .822, .795 the last three years.

Nunez’ career OPS vs LHP is .757. Dickerson’s career OPS vs RHP is .774. Dickerson is about a year and a half younger than Swisher and Nunez is more than six years younger.

It’s not ludicrous at all. Granted we do not know what kind of OF Nunez would be if he committed to it full time.
