TIME/TV: 7:05 p.m., MY9

WEATHER: Still a nice day here at the stadium. Still a slight breeze blowing from left to right.

UMPIRES: HP Adrian Johnson, 1B Lance Barrett, 2B Gary Cederstrom, 3B Toby Basner

UPDATE, 7:21 p.m.: Jeter gets hit No. 200, but Rodriguez hits into a double play and first inning ends with no score.

UPDATE, 8:02 p.m.: Nix thrown out at the plate, but Chris Stewart comes through with a two-out RBI double to tie the game at 1. Would have been a go-ahead double except the ball bounced into the stands and Ichiro had to stop at third.

UPDATE, 8:03 p.m.: Good grief, Stewart just threw out Rajai Davis by about four feet. That’s pretty impressive.

Let’s go, boys. Sweep tonight, Phelps into the 7th, please, and about 7 Yankee runs, too.

  2. luis September 19th, 2012 at 7:05 pm

    Go Phelpsy, Go Yankees!!

  3. jacksquat September 19th, 2012 at 7:07 pm

    No Jones, finally!!!

  4. luis September 19th, 2012 at 7:13 pm

A what time is the game?

  5. UnKnown September 19th, 2012 at 7:15 pm

Swish is having some fun out there. Man that guy loves playing in the Bronx.

  6. UnKnown September 19th, 2012 at 7:15 pm

Luis it’s on right now. Jeter lead off single. The guy is a machine.

  7. RayVT September 19th, 2012 at 7:16 pm

    Jeter singles on 1st pitch!

  8. luis September 19th, 2012 at 7:17 pm

Damn! they have it announced in extra-innings, but they have YES network. I just tune it in on MLB tv so no harm done. Thanks Unknown

  9. luis September 19th, 2012 at 7:19 pm

Good at bat from Swish there….by the way, I think it was Jete’s 200th hit

  10. UnKnown September 19th, 2012 at 7:20 pm

Come on Alex, go Boom here.

  11. sunny615 September 19th, 2012 at 7:22 pm

    RISP FAIL. Again.

  12. Tyler September 19th, 2012 at 7:23 pm

The O’s called up Dylan Bundy…. he only has 16 innings at AA this year and 103 total in his minor league career. Really aggressive call-up.

  13. Tyler September 19th, 2012 at 7:24 pm

Would have been nice to get another early lead but they are going to get to Romero. Just a matter of Phelps throwing well.

  14. UnKnown September 19th, 2012 at 7:25 pm

4 flyball outs for Phelps so far. Hopefully he can mix in some K’s and a few ground balls.

  15. sunny615 September 19th, 2012 at 7:28 pm

Phelps is throwing awfully high in the zone.

  16. Andymelillo September 19th, 2012 at 7:28 pm

The yankees hitters are so bad in RISP Rickey Romero is going look like nolan Ryan against yankees

  17. luis September 19th, 2012 at 7:28 pm

Now it’s on the TV…I guess they realized this was my9 game and not a YES game

  18. luis September 19th, 2012 at 7:30 pm

Good two seamer there, liked the first one too

  19. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 19th, 2012 at 7:32 pm

    No YES?

I have the Jays broadcast only.

    GO PHELPSY!

    GO YANKS!

    GO M’S!

  20. luis September 19th, 2012 at 7:34 pm

    Gutsy pitch

  21. UnKnown September 19th, 2012 at 7:34 pm

    3-2 breaking ball. Wowza!

  22. sunny615 September 19th, 2012 at 7:39 pm

    Here we go.

  23. Benny Blanco September 19th, 2012 at 7:39 pm

    phelps looks awesome *sarcasm*

  24. RYUKINGDOM September 19th, 2012 at 7:40 pm

i don’t want to hear anymore how Phelps is a strike thrower….

  25. MG September 19th, 2012 at 7:42 pm

this has the feel of the kind of game where a guy like Freddy Garcia will pitch some good ball and the Yankees will score some runs late to win and sweep the DH

  26. Tyler September 19th, 2012 at 7:42 pm

Phelps has 33 walks in 87 big league innings. Yeah, he’s not a strike thrower lol.

  27. luis September 19th, 2012 at 7:43 pm

He is a strike thrower…He has been squeezed a little and probably got tired after throwing so many pitches..We need a nice and long inning from the O and a very economical inning from Phelps

  28. Tyler September 19th, 2012 at 7:45 pm

Hard to believe that Romero has a 5.83 ERA this year. Talk about a regression….

  29. luis September 19th, 2012 at 7:45 pm

    An oppo shot from McGehe

  30. luis September 19th, 2012 at 7:49 pm

You don’t get to see that kind of play very often

  31. luis September 19th, 2012 at 7:51 pm

The ump does have a tight zone

  32. Tyler September 19th, 2012 at 7:51 pm

Yeah that 3-2 pitch was close. Lets go Ichiro!

  33. UnKnown September 19th, 2012 at 7:51 pm

Ricky has been showing up Adrian Johnson a lot tonight. I wonder how much more of that HP ump will take.

  34. UnKnown September 19th, 2012 at 7:52 pm

It’s Ichiro’s world right now, too bad Nix didn’t get in there safe.

  35. Tyler September 19th, 2012 at 7:53 pm

Not watching…. was it the right move to send him there?

  36. Tyler September 19th, 2012 at 7:53 pm

And Ichiro should be batting 2nd with Swisher 8th.

  37. Triple Short of a Cycle September 19th, 2012 at 7:54 pm

Rasmus looks like one of the baseball Fury gang members from the Warriors

  38. sunny615 September 19th, 2012 at 7:54 pm

What a crappy slide by Nix (if you could call it that)

  39. luis September 19th, 2012 at 7:55 pm

Yup Tyler…The throw from rasmus was right on the money, Nix scores on that play 8 times out of 10

  40. tomingeorgia September 19th, 2012 at 7:56 pm

    Way to go, Stewie!

  41. UnKnown September 19th, 2012 at 7:56 pm

Tough break on the ground rule double. Ichi scores easy on that ball.

    Nice job by the BUC

  42. luis September 19th, 2012 at 7:56 pm

    YES!!!

  43. Tyler September 19th, 2012 at 7:56 pm

Thanks Luis! At least they got the run anyway!!

  44. UnKnown September 19th, 2012 at 7:57 pm

Not watching…. was it the right move to send him there?
    ——

    Definitely.

  45. tomingeorgia September 19th, 2012 at 7:57 pm

Man, that Rasmus is an ugly dude.

  46. tomingeorgia September 19th, 2012 at 7:58 pm

C’mon, Cap’n. Ducks on the pond.

  47. UnKnown September 19th, 2012 at 7:58 pm

Walks this inning hurting Romero this time.

  48. Tyler September 19th, 2012 at 7:59 pm

Haha, when he played in St. Louis, there was actually a pretty high percentage of pretty attractive women who loved Rasmus. That was when I realized for certain being a big league ball player was the greatest gig in the world.

  49. Tyler September 19th, 2012 at 8:02 pm

    C’mon Phelps

  50. UnKnown September 19th, 2012 at 8:03 pm

Could very well be 3 to 1 right now. Nix out on a bang bang play at the plate and that double by Stewart going in the stands cost Ichiro scoring.

  51. UnKnown September 19th, 2012 at 8:03 pm

    BUC!!!

  52. tomingeorgia September 19th, 2012 at 8:05 pm

Much better, Phelpsie. Hang in there. Nice catch, Swish!

  53. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 19th, 2012 at 8:05 pm

One eye on game, one eye on online game I’m playing with my niece. :(

Hoping the good King Felix shows up later tonight.

Hey that O’s fan was right. O’s alone in first place!

    Oh, wait a minute…

  54. Yankee Trader September 19th, 2012 at 8:07 pm

Time for the heart of the Yankees lineup to produce this inning

  55. UnKnown September 19th, 2012 at 8:07 pm

Purely a side note, but I am pretty sure I just saw Jeff Kent on the new Survivor Season that starts tonight.

Looks just like him and his name is Jeff.

  56. Tyler September 19th, 2012 at 8:08 pm

    Unknown-

    It is him.

  57. UnKnown September 19th, 2012 at 8:10 pm

Wow. That’s weird. Didn’t expect to see him as a player on there.

  58. Tyler September 19th, 2012 at 8:14 pm

    Unknown-

It is kind of weird that he’s doing it…. I don’t know if he’s doing it for the money or just the challenge of it. Hopefully it’s the latter….

  59. Andymelillo September 19th, 2012 at 8:18 pm

For giidness sake Aroid please do sime steroid this team is si bad at hitting

  60. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 19th, 2012 at 8:19 pm

Nats already at 90 wins and on verge of clinching a playoff spot. Really amazing.

  61. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 19th, 2012 at 8:20 pm

Kent was always a wise ass. He’s probably a good match for the game.

  62. Andymelillo September 19th, 2012 at 8:20 pm

The yankees make every picture look good

  63. NYY_Girl_Penny September 19th, 2012 at 8:23 pm

The yankees make every picture look good
    —–

They really do. Romero hasn’t won a game in ages.. you’d think we’d not make him look like an ACE, then again, we make all SP look like ACE so it’s not unexpected with this lineup.

  64. luis September 19th, 2012 at 8:23 pm

That was a very good CU

  65. luis September 19th, 2012 at 8:24 pm

  66. UnKnown September 19th, 2012 at 8:25 pm

  67. luis September 19th, 2012 at 8:25 pm

    Go FB high and in

  68. luis September 19th, 2012 at 8:26 pm

Excellent sequence from Phelps….Now we are scoring big

  69. UnKnown September 19th, 2012 at 8:26 pm

    PHELPSY!!!!!!!

  70. tomingeorgia September 19th, 2012 at 8:27 pm

Jeff Kent on Survivor? That must be where everybody went. Nice inning for Phelps, pitch count already too high.

  71. luis September 19th, 2012 at 8:30 pm

Phelps is changing speeds and eye level beautifully. That last at bat was a perfect example, went high and in, and then came back with the CB on a 3-2 count. Both very intelligent and gutsy.

This Lawrie kid has some arm

  72. UnKnown September 19th, 2012 at 8:31 pm

I wish Ichiro and Jeter could just use Ghost Runners all night long.

  73. luis September 19th, 2012 at 8:31 pm

    An Ichi hit!!

  74. Tyler September 19th, 2012 at 8:31 pm

Girardi needs to move Ichiro up to 2nd.

  75. luis September 19th, 2012 at 8:32 pm

    Well….We’ll get him next inning

  76. Andymelillo September 19th, 2012 at 8:34 pm

Can we say they scored all their runs in the first game its painfull two games of bat hitters

  77. luis September 19th, 2012 at 8:35 pm

What the pitch limit for Phelps?…It shouldn’t be low since it wasn’t that long ago that he was starting

  78. luis September 19th, 2012 at 8:36 pm

    *What’s* should say

  79. luis September 19th, 2012 at 8:38 pm

    MG,

If you are still around…I see what you mean about the way he misses on the outside of the plate to RHB…He sometimes overthrows the Fb and yanks it toward that part, like he just did with Hecheverria

  80. luis September 19th, 2012 at 8:39 pm

    Another big 3-2 CB

  81. tomingeorgia September 19th, 2012 at 8:39 pm

Another nice on for Phelps. A couple more would be beautiful.

  82. kd September 19th, 2012 at 8:40 pm

can stewart be the everyday catcher as they break in austin romine?

he’ll hit better than martin next season

  83. jackamir September 19th, 2012 at 8:40 pm

This is our inning to score a crooked number!!!!!

  84. umbrelladoc September 19th, 2012 at 8:41 pm

I think Phelps is gassing a bit. Gotta get someone up.

  85. Andymelillo September 19th, 2012 at 8:41 pm

  93. luis September 19th, 2012 at 8:47 pm

Arod guessed wrong on that one

  94. luis September 19th, 2012 at 8:47 pm

  95. GoldGlove9486 September 19th, 2012 at 8:47 pm

I know you are probably 10 years old but you are aware enough to know the Yankees are 2nd in MLB in OPS and in the top 3 in runs scored, aren’t you?

If they are horrible what does that make the other 30 or so teams that have lesser statistics?

  98. UnKnown September 19th, 2012 at 8:48 pm

Snoopy bobble head night and boo Arod night at the Stadium, I see.

  99. Niblick September 19th, 2012 at 8:48 pm

Arod looked bat that at bat.

  100. Ghostwriter September 19th, 2012 at 8:48 pm

    Some random thoughts:

It’s good to see Andy come back, and pitch as well as he did today. Just his presence makes me feel like the Yanks have a run in them this year.

Phelps looks like he is the real deal. Nothing seems to phase him. Phelps kind of reminds me of Nova–not to mention Andy– in this regard. He seems utterly unflappable. Once Phelps has been given the ball, he knows exactly what to do with it.

It’s amazing what a little 3-game winning streak can do for one’s otlook :)

  101. Andymelillo September 19th, 2012 at 8:49 pm

When will the yankees buy AROIdS contract out

  102. Bring in the Goose September 19th, 2012 at 8:49 pm

This team goes as Arod goes, plain and simple.

Look at his performances in the PS since he became a Yankee. That bat in the middle of the order HAS to produce.

There was alot of magic to 2009 – alot of heroics. I’ll settle for just one or two.

    Take us there, Arod.

  103. TheStraw September 19th, 2012 at 8:50 pm

    Or not.

  104. longtimefan September 19th, 2012 at 8:50 pm

SOS, can’t buy a hit with RISP, making Romero look like King Felix, this team needs guys who can put the ball in play

  105. GoldGlove9486 September 19th, 2012 at 8:50 pm

Having these two idiots bad one on top of another against a slow pitcher like Romero is pretty ugly to watch. Yanks, I hate to say it, need a homer or two.

  106. NYY fan in NH September 19th, 2012 at 8:51 pm

    Curtis with a K…..his K’s are alarming

  107. jacksquat September 19th, 2012 at 8:51 pm

Would be nice to put this game out of the range where Girardi is tempted to use Joba or Soriano, who I don’t think should be pitching in this game (Robertson is a given to not pitch).

  108. RYUKINGDOM September 19th, 2012 at 8:51 pm

Who do we keep next year, Arod or Ichiro?

  109. sunny615 September 19th, 2012 at 8:52 pm

    Can’t buy a hit.

  110. UnKnown September 19th, 2012 at 8:52 pm

3rd time through the lineup here for Phelps.

  111. Bo knows September 19th, 2012 at 8:53 pm

Alex guessing twice, Grandy non compete. Risphits rare. Oy.

  112. MG September 19th, 2012 at 8:54 pm

Romero is a good pitcher having a very bad half season but he’s always given the Yankees fits, other than Ichiro and Nix none of them have good numbers against him.

  113. OsOWNtheEAST September 19th, 2012 at 8:54 pm

I see the Yanks have brought their choking shoes out tonight… Lol

Enjoy paying Arod $100+M to strike out with guys on base for the next 5 years.

  114. GoldGlove9486 September 19th, 2012 at 8:55 pm

I’ll tell you one guy who once crushed Romero….Brett Gardner. Grand Slam in 2010. Ugh.

    =======================

That may have been true at one point, but this tam doesn’t seem all that reliant on ARod. This team did just fine when ARod went on the DL. The team didn’t struggle until Granderson slumped for an extended period.

  116. UnKnown September 19th, 2012 at 8:56 pm

  119. luis September 19th, 2012 at 8:57 pm

  120. OsOWNtheEAST September 19th, 2012 at 8:57 pm

I hope you guys enjoyed 2009.

Yanks won’t win another for at least a decade.

  121. Andymelillo September 19th, 2012 at 8:57 pm

They are one of the worst teams in risp an loaded bases they scored mostly on homers an rbi in first half of the year after allstar break the can’t hit homers they can’t score if they are doing that great hitting they wouldn’t have Orios come from 10 games back same age u called me

  122. RYUKINGDOM September 19th, 2012 at 8:58 pm

You need to play Nunez to spark and run this team. Jeter, Nunez and Ichiro can make things happen.

  123. Bo knows September 19th, 2012 at 8:58 pm

Boy, Phelps has done his job and then some. Paging Yankee Offense, pick up on line two. Two runs in thirteen innings?

  124. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 19th, 2012 at 8:59 pm

Some games we can buy a lot of hits, some games we can’t buy a hit, some games we’re in between. Romero has had a down season but it doesn’t mean he forgot how to pitch. Players get up for Yankee games. If he’s doing a decent job, we’ll deal with it. He won’t be in the game forever.

Now every game is going to go the way we want it to go. But as long as something happens to hep the Ys win, a win is a win.

I totally believe we’re going to win this game.

  125. MG September 19th, 2012 at 8:59 pm

Nice job by Phelps tonight, very nice…

  126. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 19th, 2012 at 9:00 pm

I don’t think that they’re wasting Ichiro, batting him eighth. Ichiro needs to prove that he should bat in the top part of the order. I would love to bat him lead off, and hit Jeter behind him. However, Ichiro needs to demonstrate that he can produce at a high enough level. The number-2 hole is wide open forsomebody to grab it–Granderson, Swisher, or Ichiro all could claim it by getting hot over the next couple weeks.

  155. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 19th, 2012 at 9:14 pm

I guess once we get through the lineup the first time, I don’t see how Ichiro is being wasted in tonight’s game. It isn’t like the hitters around him never hit. In addition, that’s tonight’s game. In today’s game he lead off and he has in some other games. He’s valuable wherever he is.

I didn’t look at Romero v. our lineup but I would bet there is some method to the madness if you do take a look at the stats.

“Romero with the 5.8 ERA, seven hits and 5 BBs in six innings. That good pitcher? Okay.”

Romero has had an off season but he is a very good pitcher. We’ve also had pitchers who have allowed a lot of hits and walks at times and have Houdini’d their way out of situations. I don’t remember anyone deciding they’re not good pitchers (well except for the usual suspects who say that about all of our pitchers who are less than perfect). In fact, if they end up getting out of it and winning the game, we’re onto the next game, feeling fine about the pitcher.

    True enough.

Romero was part of a Jays team that was supposed to have been very competitive until about 60% of the team went down. So the pressure on him and what’s left of the rotation has been inordinate. Talk about trying to haul the water. I’m not surprised his numbers are down this season.

He’s been tough on them in his career, that’s the way it goes sometimes in baseball.

It seems any pitcher that has some good soft stuff going is tough on the Yanks.

  246. mick September 19th, 2012 at 9:40 pm

  248. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 19th, 2012 at 9:40 pm

    If Feliciano anywhere in sight?

Poor Boone. Geeze he’s been an incredible workhorse for the Yanks. Nobody’s fault that things sifted out the way they did. But I’d hate to see him rendered ineffective in the post because of overuse. I’m not predicting it, just concerned about how much he’s had to pitch.

  249. Madrugador September 19th, 2012 at 9:41 pm

I would say bad abuse. Isn’t that what happened to Scott Procter? Overused one year and useless the next?

  250. MG September 19th, 2012 at 9:41 pm

how can he pull Logan after he got two quick outs like that plus the last out of the 7th?

I briefly had the Nats-Dodgers game on before this one started-the Dodgers were down 2 with a runner on 2nd and 1 out with Ethier batting-Davy Johnson brought in a lefty, he got Ethier and then got to face Kemp (walked him on 3-2), then he struck out Gonzalez. Girardi would have made two pitching changes for sure.

  251. jacksquat September 19th, 2012 at 9:41 pm

Before today Arod had ~.900 OPS since returning, so the boos are a little unwarranted.

  252. Jerkface September 19th, 2012 at 9:41 pm

Logan has 51 innings in 74 games. He can get into a lot of games because he doesn’t throw a lot of pitches in his actual appearance.

  253. UnKnown September 19th, 2012 at 9:42 pm

Clap it up for Boone. I guess Joe didn’t burn him out from his whole 3 pitches early today like some people were worried about.

  254. Captain Clutch September 19th, 2012 at 9:42 pm

I really wish that Girardi would give Wade a chance to see what he can do. Girardi is like Torre in that you are his boy or you aren’t. Eppley in a play off game would be a disaster and Joba isn’t consistent enough. Wade could be there best option in the 7th inning.

  255. luis September 19th, 2012 at 9:42 pm

There is a common recurrence when this pitchers that aren’t supposed to beat us do so….They ALL have a very good CU, or very good off speed offerings…Incredibly, we have more chance against power pitchers

  256. Bo knows September 19th, 2012 at 9:42 pm

The Yanks have had trouble hitting leftys. Despite his overall numbers this year, Romero does have pretty good stuff especially if he can locate.

    ———
That’s just it , he didn’t locate, twelve baserunners in six innings

  257. UnKnown September 19th, 2012 at 9:42 pm

  258. Jerkface September 19th, 2012 at 9:42 pm

“stop making exuses they don’t know how to win if they don’t homer.”
That’s not entirely true. In fact with the callups in, they’ve played a lot more effective small ball and have definitely hit with RISP.

“stop makeing exuses about Aroid he is done”

He sure doesn’t look done to me. I don’t worry about singular games. He’s looked really good since he’s come back.

BUT – you don’t have to see it the same way, and if you don’t that’s fine too. Not everyone agrees on how to view these things anyway.

  271. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 19th, 2012 at 9:46 pm

I agree we need to see what Wade has. Maybe Joe’s waiting for a comfortable enough lead before he does it.

    That’s how teams win games.

  280. luis September 19th, 2012 at 9:48 pm

To back Bo Knows a little here….Phelps gave a clinic of pitching…Romero just got either lucky, great defensive plays and some of our hitters are vulnerable to the CU. But in most cases a competent offense would have scored a few runs.

I’m guessing Joe will push Soriano to close again.

Possible he might go with Joba since he didn’t throw many pitches (I don’t like that idea because of him just coming off TJ surgery).

Inconsistent zone by the Ump, that pitch Jeter walked, was called a strike earlier…He never called that one to Phelps though…What I like is that the Jays are probably on the bad side of the ump now

  399. Captain Clutch September 19th, 2012 at 10:08 pm

It stinks to see Swisher go down so easy against off speed pitches every single time. As long as Ichiro is hitting I would bat him lead off and Jeter 2nd. Swisher isn’t good enough to bat 2nd. Everyone knows not to throw him a fastball and it’s an easy out.

I think the jury is still out on Swisher. He’s been terrible in September thus far. I think it really comes down to his postseason. He’s been terrible the past 3 postseasons (even in ’09 when they won it all)… if he stinks it up again, I’d be more than happy to let him walk and get creative.

It was…But still, Swisher tried to hammer those two pitches… What a player he would be if he could contain himself and keep the swing compact and not try to hit it out and be the hero every time the game is on the line.

  408. umbrelladoc September 19th, 2012 at 10:10 pm

  409. Tar September 19th, 2012 at 10:10 pm

I do not believe any Yankee was going to put wood on that CB. Not excusing Swish’s slump, but they were just nasty.

  410. DocTodd September 19th, 2012 at 10:10 pm

Lord, I hope they don’t sign Whiffer again. Any manager who throws him a fastball is an idiot. Throw him a low breaking ball and he is sure to screw himself into the ground. I’ll take Ichiro in RF next season, along with many of my fellow posters.

I wouldn’t be surpised to see Cashman pull off a surprise trade for an outfielder in the offseason. Look for him to try to land somebody coming off a down season the way that he did to get Swisher and Granderson.
