Game 155: Yankees at Twins
YANKEES (89-65)
Ichiro Suzuki RF
Derek Jeter SS
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher 1B
Curtis Granderson CF
Eric Chavez 3B
Raul Ibanez DH
Chris Stewart C
Chris Dickerson LF
LHP CC Sabathia (13-6, 3.47)
Sabathia vs. Twins
TWINS (65-90)
Denard Span CF
Ben Revere RF
Joe Mauer DH
Ryan Doumit C
Chris Parmelee 1B
Matt Carson LF
Jamey Carroll 3B
Alexi Casilla 2B
Pedro Florimon SS
RHP Samuel Deduno (6-5, 4.54)
Deduno has never faced any of the Yankees
TIME/TV: 1:10 p.m., YES Network
WEATHER: Chilly day in Minneapolis, but seems to be warming up a little bit. When the breeze picks up it’s pretty cold.
UMPIRES: HP Doug Eddings, 1B Kerwin Danley, 2B Paul Nauert, 3B Dana DeMuth
OPEN AT THE CLOSE: The Yankees are 31-18 in series finales. They have won their last four on the road and are 12-7 in the rubber game of a three-game series.
SWISHALICIOUS: Nick Swisher has homered in four of his last six games, including each of his last three. That marks the fifth time he’s homered in three straight games, and his first time doing so since 2008 with the White Sox when he homered in four straight. He has hit safely in each of his last eight games (.367, 11-for-30) with 11 RBI, going 4-for-9 with RISP. Six of his last 12 homers — and seven of his last 15 — have given the Yankees the lead.
FAMILIAR FACE: Twins left fielder Matt Carson never really gained traction as a minor leaguer in the Yankees organization, but he’s since gotten some big league time with Oakland and Minnesota. In Triple-A, he was once ejected from a game, and the umpire claimed it was because Carson dropped an F-bomb while arguing a called strike. Carson’s postgame response: “I’ve never used that word in my life.” I believed him. He’s that kind of guy.
UPDATE, 1:23 p.m.: If that play happens 10 more times this season, it will never end like that. Thought for sure Swisher would let it roll foul, but diving, spinning throw to first and the tumbling, shoestring catch by Cano worked perfectly. Replay shows it was the right call.
UPDATE, 1:39 p.m.: That’s it for Deduno who leaves after 30 pitches with some sort of injury. Now he’s the lefty Duensing to face the Yankees vRHP lineup.
UPDATE, 1:40 p.m.: The Twins say it’s an eye issue for Deduno. Weird.
UPDATE, 2:03 p.m.: Bases loaded for Cano. Should be an ideal situation, but he’s really struggled against lefties this season.
UPDATE, 2:05 p.m.: Hard-hit ball by Cano, bad play by Revere, and two runs for the Yankees.
UPDATE, 2:09 p.m.: Cano’s double, Swisher’s single, Granderson’s triple and Duensing’s wild pitch have made it 6-1 Yankees.
UPDATE, 2:52 p.m.: For whatever reason, Casilla owns Sabathia and has another hit of him here in the fifth. In his career, Casilla is a 11-for-20 off the Yankees ace.
UPDATE, 2:54 p.m.: I honestly feel like there are few players more on top of the game than Eric Chavez, but he definitely had a mental moment there. Thought there were two outs and turned a possible double play into a single out at third base. The look on his face, however, was priceless (though I suppose that depends on how this inning works out).
UPDATE, 2:57 p.m.: Sabathia gets out of it and everyone in the Yankees dugout comes over to give Chavez a hard time.
UPDATE, 3:02 p.m.: Wow. Dickerson continues his audition for a roster spot next season, showing some of that grown-man power that Swisher has talked about in this park. His long home run to right-center has pushed the Yankees lead to 8-1.

You guys at home watching should look for me, I’m about 12 rows right behind the 3rd base dugout. I’m wearing my trustee Twins cap, a blue Twins shirt, and brown pants… I also might add I’m a pretty good looking fellow.
Go Twins Go!!!

any website u can listen to the game online?or even better watch?
The one thing worth pointing out for the troll in the room is that “Twins own the Yankees” is probably the most unintelligent thing to say about the Yankees and their A.L. Opponents. Not to mention 4 ALDS defeats in the last 10 seasons, but the Yankees have destroyed the Twins for a long, long time. I have a feeling we’ll see a Jays Own the Yankees poster tomorrow who, coincidentally, will be at every game in Toronto.

hahaha prolly right
Incredible play by both Swisher and Cano….thats a play I doubt Twx can make because hes right handed….
GoldGlove,
That would be a pretty big coincidence if some guy with a similar ID to mine actually started posting in this blog and went to the games. The smart money is on that not happening. Want to make a wager?
No thanks…I’m pretty sure you’re not old enough to gamble. If you’re at the game, watch it. Don’t sit in a blog all day. It’s a beautiful day and you’re obviously not at work. Watch the game!
Those were BS ball calls to Swisher.
Is this ump blind?
its funny how all these teams with hardly any WS and very little sucess in the past 15 yrs own the yankees….im perplexed
They have to lay off that slider in the dirt. Hopefully the 2nd time around they will make the adjustment.
You can call those pitches 12 rows up behind the 3rd base dugout? Time for you to take the trash out for your Mom.
ffs, don’t give outs to a guy who has walked 55 in 77!
Giving the forum another day to “breathe” and G Love another chance to listen to whatever music he wants. This is two days in a row. If he doesn’t take advantage, it’s not my fault or problem! I just don’t want to hear about it any more after this.
This is Girardi’s biggest nightmare. Now he has all of these lefties in the lineup and they can matchup with a lefty. The binder is in trouble today.
Joe should really protest the game. I see no injury, and here comes a lefty to screw everything up with our lineup. This is a joke.
Nothing noticeably wrong with Deduno, and now of course of LHP is coming in, getting pretty sick of this tactic.
Hmmm, what happened to Deduno?
So it’s not OK for Gardenhire to bring in a lefty if his starter is hurt?
What if he just warmed up a lefty in between innings and brought him in to start the next inning, could the Yankees protest that also?
I learned that move from Buck.
Stack your lefties against us will ya?
HAHAAHAHAHA
If nothing is wrong with him, karma says the Yanks should take this game no questions!
Okay, that’s all.
Left eye irritation, lol. Right. I mean left.
Girardi is feeling sick now. All he can think about is who will Jones and Nunez pinch hit for.
How many rings does paul oneil have compare to Arod.Arod play off stats was with Seatle mostly.Arod was on steroids an paul oneil wasn’t
This is one of the problems with the expanded rosters in Sept. Chicanery abounds.
There is no question that Deduno wasn’t hurt. This is a move by Gardenhire to screw with the Yankees. Protest the game.
Trish – sometimes I don’t know what’s going on at this site, buy do worry your stress levels are high. We can all be a bit idiotic at times but hopefully without malice. I am your friend and will continue to be so and I hope likewise, even if do mess my stats.
Take care and that goes to the others as well.
Swish is gonna get Cano killed.
C’mon big man, buckle down…
Yes!!!!
We are going to win this game and screw you guys over!!! Go Twins Go!!!
Interesting about Gagne & the Dodgers, it makes perfect sense when you look at his Cy Young year roster.
kevin brown, odalis perez, guillermo mota, paul lo duca, fred mcgriff, alex cora, adrian beltre, jeromy burnitz, shawn green, rickey henderson
C’mon Ace… start acing.
Duensing vs lhh .634 OPS, vs rhh .812 OPS. What a bush move by Gardenhire.
Jacksqaut,
Actually it’s called STRATEGERY…. Maybe your dumbo manager should get some.
haha, back to back hits by lhh, suck it ronnie.
Duensing vs lhh .634 OPS, vs rhh .812 OPS. What a bush move by Gardenhire.

I’d say its an astute strategy. The only iffy part of it was removing the original pitcher because of a fake injury. For a platoon heavy team like the Yankees this kind of bait and switch is a good tactic.
big spot
It’s cool , we got you right where we want you.
Cano can’t hit lefties or in the clutch.
Let’s go, big opportunity here!
There’s a big hit off a lefty for Cano =)

It’s not a good tactic, it’s a bush tactic, basically cheating. They had a closeup of Deduno on the mound and his eyes looked pretty clear to me.
Check that 5-1 …..
risp!!!
Grandy! Clears em ……
Anyway, doesn’t matter, bush strategy backfired.

–
Switching pitchers isn’t cheating, jacksquat. The only thing that is iffy is removing him for injury, but its not like you HAVE to let your starter go as long as you want. They could have removed him after 1 batter if they had Duensing warming up.
Maybe this situation will prove to the Binder that he need not be married to this L-R business.
We can only hope.
Please do not feed the troll.
Another bush strategy by Gardenhire, keeping CC on the bench for so long in between innings.
He saw they got a run after the extra time for Duensing to warm up so he made sure they kept CC on the bench even longer this inning.
Protest the game Binder Joe, now.
trisha –
Let me make something abundantly clear. I never once said it was your fault the blog turned into 36 conversations about trisha. It’s more a condemnation of other people who can’t ignore you and litter the place up trying to knock you off your perch while you don’t ignore them and defend yourself again and again and again. It’s boring to read and it makes it almost impossible to interject anything other than whatever the current battle you and your critics are waging against one another.
I never questioned your fan status. I, along with others, are just tired of reading the people vs. trisha on here. That’s it.
Yes, you post a lot. That’s your right. I just wish everything wasn’t such a contentious exercise when people see you post something that aggravates them and then you shove it back at them. That’s it.
Post away.
Any word from GB7? Is he still alive?
Well we’ve given CC his usual number of runs.. I will assume that because I was watching during that one inning, I am the Yankees good luck charm. Hooray for $5 margaritas for lunch!
I think it was a bush strategy whether Deduno was injured or not. That’s my opinion.
JF, I’m not surprised you don’t think of it as bush given that you think steroids should be legal…
Let’s hope CC can hold this lead.
Who needs Arod
Robby Cano is having one great game in the field today…
“Interesting about Gagne & the Dodgers………”
Whenever Canseco says there is already a PED user in the HOF, Henderson is who I always think of even though he doesn’t fit the typical steroid user profile.
jmills, I swear to you I am perfectly fine! If there are people who felt I was monopolizing the gamethread and they didn’t have any chance to post, or if there were people who thought my constant rah rah rah! was annoying, I decided to give them a few days without having to see my posts.
It’s all good. It doesn’t diminish me in the least, and if it’s helpful at all to any posters out there, I’m doing a good thing. Now for any posters who feel that they need to miss my posts permanently, well hey, I can’t help you out here.
Those who believe the pitching change was a ruse I refer you to an old Kinks song “paranoia do destroy you”.
this just in from the Twins clubhouse:
‘Samuel Deduno had to leave the game today because of left eye irritation as the result of Ron Gardhenhire spraying green mist in the eye in between the 1st and 2nd innings.
When asked for the reason for this most unusual attack on a player, Gardenhire responded, ‘I had to mess with Binder Joe and this was better than breaking his arm.’

Read Sun Tzu, nothing is bush as long as it works towards victory, and I am not debating your opinion that it is bush, just that it is cheating or somehow illegal.
I wish all posters would respect others right to their opinions, right or wrong. The only thing that truly irritates me is a poster who believes their opinion is fact. Different opinions hopefully make us consider if our own are correct.

I’ve never seen Joe Mauer looks as bad in consecutive ABs as those last two against CC…
Team Greedy would like even more runs, please.
MG,
I agree about Mauer. He never looks overmatched, but do far he has. Now, that I have said that he will probably homer next time up.

There is an article about Mauer in a recent ESPN the Mag that has quotes from his teammates about how amazed they are at how rarely he is fooled. They say he is only going to be truly fooled in an at bat maybe a handful of times a year.
Maybe CC just got a big handful there
Both teams look ready to get this game over.

Mac,
Chavez does look like he wants to go home
Hello everyone
Chavez with an inexcusable brain fart there.
Perhaps your manager should remind the powers how many outs there are. I always make sure to do that! DUH!!!!
I guess we are going to be joined by Farrel in Toronto and by Bobby V against Boston
Good thing the Chavez mistake didn’t cost them a run. Stewart and Martin are really bad at blocking balls. Too many balls get passed them.
C.C. has 75 pitches after 5 innings.
That might put him on track to pitch at least 7 innings today, probably not more unless
he runs into some good fortune.

I certainly hope so!!
It’s nice to see Ibanez’s bat wake up the last couple of days. DH is definitely the best spot for him.
Stewart doesn’t look very comfortable bunting
that was a great job by Stewart!!!
Dickey!!!
That was an awfully long home run by Dickerson.
Give this guy more playing time….
Too bad Joe Genius doesn’t understand or recognize what he has on his bench.
Dickerson can hit a little. I never understood why Girardi never gave him a chance to play. Especially when he had Ibanez and Jones in the outfield who can’t field at all.
this is the laugher we needed today
Dickerson has had a very good year.
I recall there were several critics questioning why Dickerson was playing today.
Guess that was the correct move.
Dickerson has convinced me he’s earned more playing time and should be on the ALDS roster instead of an 11th or 12th pitcher.
Minnesota looks like they are already planning their offseason vacations…….
the more runs the Yankees score, the closer
Aardsma is on the mound today during a game that actually counts.
The umps never allow that to be called. It’s obvious that they want to go home.
Can someone remind why this guy does not play more often? If Giradi is so big on “small” sample sizes..then what dickerson has done in this short time in september should warrant immediate playing time.
I thought this was a difficult stadium to hit homers in??? Guess we proved otherwise

Yay, Dickerson. Had a hell of a year at AAA. Should have had more playing time.
Aardsman isn’t on the roster to help the Yankees this year-he hasn’t pitched in two full seasons and there is no role for him down the stretch or in the playoffs.
He’s been activated, most likely, to reward him for all of the hard work this year getting himself back into competitive shape-his time will be next spring to see if he can make the club.
Golden sombrero??
I smell an appearance of Double A—AArdsma!!!

Made me laugh.
I really though O’Neil diagnosed all of Cano’s issues at the plate the other night. I was watching the replay and he said that Cano isn’t taking the outside pitch to LF at all.
It seems so simple, but if you watch Cano’s at bats he’s trying to pull that outside pitch and it doesn’t work.
He’s still having a great season, but I think until he can stop trying to pull that outside pitch, he’s going to have trouble as the scouting report clearly is telling them go hard or soft away on him. Especially vs. lefties.
Luis,
I would bet Mauer has never Kd three times in a row on nine pitches before today.

Jeter needs a hit to keep the streak alive
luis – Likely because Girardi is going to cut us down a guy on the bench in order to put another in the pen. I’m all for having the extra bench player.. especially in a 5 game set.. but in the past Joe has tended to go in the other direction.
It’s very much a numbers game though. It goes without saying I’d like ALL the players on the roster (except Andruw Jones, who might somehow make it over one of the other two).
2 on in the 7th, this is prime BLogan territory!

luis – I hope you’re right, believe me…. but I’ve been trying to will Andruw off our team since last season, and it still hasn’t worked.
I can’t imagine Gardner makes the PS roster…. So I’d like to have Dickerson, Ibanez, Nunez, Chavy… and Nix…. is that too many? I can’t count cause I’m a female.
Have a weird feeling you’re going to a Dickerson platoon with a strong RH OF vs LHP next season. Maybe Cody Ross if the Red Sox let him walk.
Dickerson’s a different player than before and you see the potential that’s there now. He’s got the tools and it feels like he’s close to putting something together.
Got to go guys…have a good one
YankeesWFAN CC strong 7 innings. 8-2 lead. 108 pitches. Nobody in the pen so he’s coming back I guess.

I think if Tex comes back, Jones def doesn’t make it but if he doesn’t, I think they might put Jones on the roster
A 10-2 lead would be nice just so DRob and Sori don’t have to warm up in the 9th.
Shame…That´s a perfect bench… and 11 pitchers, CC,Pettitte, Kuroda, Hughes, Sori, Drob, Phelps, Joba, Logan, Rapada/Eppley and Nova
Dickerson reminds me a little of Bernie at the plate….not that hes Bernie….but just his LH swing and how he takes pitches etc….
It’s Boonie time!
Don’t think Robertson should even be throwing, up 8-2.
I’m not understanding why Girardi is letting CC throw all of these pitches
Let Aardsma take the 9th.
Greg – Good point about Tex… if we’re swinging the bats well, does anyone think we might try to risk not using Tex until round 2? I doubt it, tbh, but if they do keep Dickerson as the 3rd OFer and Swish at 1st…. not impossible, just not ideal.
I’m not understanding why Girardi is letting CC throw all of these pitches
Because he doesn’t want to use DRob or Sori and he doesn’t trust anyone else…even with a 6-run lead.
Sad but true.
I would think they would like Tex to play at least the Boston series to get some swings in before the playoffs, if he is going to play.

If they keep Ibanez, Ross or Dickerson are possibilities. I’d like them more than someone older. But with Dickerson it’s hard to say how he’d fair in a full big league season I guess…. he’s been a career minors guy and is like 30, right? You’d think he would have put it together a little sooner but I wouldn’t be opposed to at least trying that out. He can’t be worse than the Jones situation this year. And that’s how we have to measure OFers at this point lol.

Dickerson has always been pretty good vs RHP. .270/.354/.419 vs RHP.
In ST I wanted them to go with him as their primary DH/4th OF vs RHP over Ibanez. Brings more to the table with his baserunning and defense.

Your point? Note their winning % with him this season and without – their run of really poor play coincided with him on the DL and there was some degree of cause and effect.
Congrats to Gardner for getting healthy enough to take
the field again in 2012.
There is literally zero reason Ibanez should even bring a glove to the ballpark anymore with Gardner and Dickerson both on the roster.

I hope we don’t see Jones or Ibanez out there anymore
I wouldn’t get any hopes us that Joe leaves Andruw Jones off the post season roster. He’ll be on it and he’ll start him vs. lefties. Bank on it.
I guess Aardsma is just ballast on the airplane. If he isn’t used with an 8 run lead, he never will be.

I’m telling you, that HR he hit as a PH the other night doomed us. He’ll wax poetics (!!!!) about the vet experience he bring to the table in those spots and blah blah blah..
Let’s party this way
