Edwin Encarnacion DH

RHP Brandon Morrow (8-7, 3.28)
Morrow vs. Yankees

TIME/TV: 7:07 p.m., YES Network

WEATHER: Cold outside, but cozy under the roof.

UMPIRES: HP Tim Welke, 1B Paul Schrieber, 2B Mike Everitt, 3B Laz Diaz

MAGIC NUMBERS: To make the playoffs: 4. To win the American League East: 6.

GETTING STARTED: The Yankees are 31-19 in series openers in 2012. They have won their last three after a six-game losing streak in openers.

NEXT ON THE LIST: Alex Rodriguez has 1,949 career RBI. His next will tie him with Stan Musial for the fifth-most all-time.

Ks FOR CC: After last night’s 10-strikeout game, CC Sabathia has struck out 21 combined batters over his past two starts. It’s the fourth time he has fanned at least 10 batters in back-to-back starts (third time as a Yankee). He has recorded 15 games of 10-or-more strikeouts as a Yankee, the fourth-most in the Live Ball Era.

UPDATE, 7:23 p.m.: So far, so good for Nova. First inning single is left stranded and it’s a scoreless game heading into the second.

UPDATE, 7:47 p.m.: A walk and a home run. That’s a good way to spoil what had been a good outing so far. The Yankees are now losing 2-0 in the bottom of the third. Their offense hasn’t done much at all against Morrow.

UPDATE, 8:09 p.m.: Granted, this place is empty, but Gose hitting the wall was really loud. He slammed into the fence to take away extra bases from Swisher and double off Cano at first.

UPDATE, 8:26 p.m.: Encarnacion has three hits already and it’s now a 4-0 Blue Jays lead after his two-run double in the fifth. Nova is still in, but there are two pitchers getting loose in the bullpen.

UPDATE, 8:28 p.m.: Here’s Rapada with two outs and a runner at second base in the fifth. Another letdown from Nova.

  2. jackamir September 27th, 2012 at 7:05 pm

Wasn’t Laz Diaz the Ump that dissed Martin early in the season.. Sunday he will behind the plate..

  3. jackamir September 27th, 2012 at 7:07 pm

    Go Ivan!!!
    Go Yanks!!!
    Score early & often!!!!

  4. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 27th, 2012 at 7:07 pm

    Think so.

  5. The Return of Stoneburner September 27th, 2012 at 7:19 pm

Yanks magic number to be in the postseason at all – i.e. via wildcard is now 3 and counting – - – -

Magic number for division clincher still at 6 and counting – - – -

  6. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 27th, 2012 at 7:24 pm

Stoneburner – the wild card would be a combination of Yankee wins and which team losses?

  7. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 27th, 2012 at 7:25 pm

With 2 WC, would it be a combination of losses of all of the WC teams still in contention?

  8. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 27th, 2012 at 7:31 pm

Okay then! Check you all out later.

  9. jackamir September 27th, 2012 at 7:33 pm

Ughhh.. Morrow is tough… Nova must be at his best this evening…

  10. Jerkface September 27th, 2012 at 7:37 pm

It isn’t my obligation to respond to anything. You considered them astute answers. I considered them unworkable in terms of Yankee reality. Not much more to say.

I couldn’t say that because your reasoning didn’t make sense to me in terms of reality. I also didn’t care to get into extended discourse. So there you have it.

So do you exist in your own alternate reality? Because the Yankees reality is that they put 5 OFers on the roster and were already utilizing Brett Gardner in a platoon when the DH spot got filled.

Cespedes is a right handed bat. They could have platooned gardner & cespedes in LF depending on a lefty pitching or not, and when a righty was on the mound they could have shifted Tex/Swisher/Cespedes to DH. Obviously they would not have signed Raul Ibanez.

It was completely workable. And especially given the injuries that happened, would have been welcome relief.

  11. mick September 27th, 2012 at 7:37 pm

dare we dream that gardner can start

    and tex/swisher dh/1b switcher,

    and leave jones/nunez off

    and take an extra pitcher?

  12. Captain Clutch September 27th, 2012 at 7:40 pm

The Yanks need Nova to pitch really good tonight. Morrow has good stuff and looks locked in so far. With the O’s not playing tonight this is a big game to win. It would be nice to be 2 games up on them.

  13. Yankees_Fan September 27th, 2012 at 7:41 pm

Unfortunately Morrow seems to have his A game tonight.

  14. Jerkface September 27th, 2012 at 7:42 pm

Consider that the Yankees went with a much more complex OF rotation in 2007 with Abreu, Melky, Matsui, and Damon, and you can see how a much LESS complex rotation of Gardner, Granderson, Swisher, and Cespedes could have been a godsend.

Granderson has played almost every game for lack of anyone to backup center for crying out loud.

  15. Shame Spencer September 27th, 2012 at 7:47 pm

You believe that these answers to your question hold absolutely no merit or logic?:

    1) Swisher’s in a contract year and will need to be replaced… preferably cheaply.

    2) We have a fair number of players beyond their prime age years and we could use young talent.

    3) We have a very immovable IF in terms of both talent and contracts. Meaning the OF is a place we have flexibility.

    4) We have carried 4 OFers fairly frequently over the past several years, and had 2 bench players who only play in the OF on our roster this year.

    5) We are trying to stay under a certain budget and still be good.. when you have good young players that are cost controlled, it helps, – even if they are used as trade bait.

None of this is logical? None of this is a part of Yankee reality?

And I believe you did come back to discuss how Darvish was scouted, so I understand you went out, of course we all do have lives, but you came back and picked up a part of the same conversation. If you don’t feel the need to respond to points made because you think they’re ridiculous that’s fine.. but I’d think you’d want to on some level present why all of the above makes no sense. Because I don’t see them as being far fetched.

  16. igotid88 September 27th, 2012 at 7:47 pm

    didn’t need that

  17. Yankees_Fan September 27th, 2012 at 7:48 pm

Now its just a matter of hoping Morrow makes a same mistake as Nova…

Miss the good Nova, no like this shaky version of him.

With 2 WC, would it be a combination of losses of all of the WC teams still in contention?

    ———————————-
I’m pretty sure it is any combination of Yankee wins and A’s losses since the A’s are in the second wild card slot

  19. Captain Clutch September 27th, 2012 at 7:49 pm

Damn that was a terrible pitch to Lawrie. That’s exactly why it’s so hard to trust Nova. He misses up in the zone too much and gets hammered. He started this game so good and that one pitch killed everything.

  20. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 27th, 2012 at 7:49 pm

I hope that Girardi has Phelps, Garcia, or Lowe at the ready if Nova further implodes. The way Morrow is pitching, at least at this point in time, the Yankees don’t want to give up any more runs.

  21. jmills September 27th, 2012 at 7:49 pm

Go Yanks! Go Jays! ( In an experiential kind of way )

    :)

  22. Captain Clutch September 27th, 2012 at 7:51 pm

Nova has to get the ball down again. He has had trouble with that all season. I would be surprised if he makes the post season roster. He isn’t consistent enough with his mechanics and command.

  23. LGY September 27th, 2012 at 7:51 pm

I love when Michael Kay brings up sabmermetricians because it sounds like he’s talking about some distant alien species.

  24. Don Vito A. Bellamo September 27th, 2012 at 7:52 pm

It is certainly too early to give up on Nova & the offense right now,,,,but who wouldn’t love a come back and take the lead inning next ? :-)

  25. Shame Spencer September 27th, 2012 at 7:52 pm

Hopefully he settles in.. but it looks like he’s nibbling.

  26. cofuzz September 27th, 2012 at 7:52 pm

Did anyone else feel that homer coming as soon as Nova walked Gose and his .221 BA?

  27. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 27th, 2012 at 7:53 pm

Shame, will respond to everything you said after the game is over. Just don’t want to bog the gamethread down with that discussion.

  28. igotid88 September 27th, 2012 at 7:54 pm

I wonder if the fact that nova is striking out more people is causing this. i know doesn’t make sense

  29. cofuzz September 27th, 2012 at 7:54 pm

    C’mon offense!

  30. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 27th, 2012 at 7:55 pm

Gregg D, thanks. I didn’t know if adding the extra wild card changed that at all.

  31. LGY September 27th, 2012 at 7:56 pm

You have to understand that in Trisha’s world

The Yankees did not sign Cespedes = The Yankees had no room on the roster for Cespedes

    Very much like

The Yankees traded Montero = The Yankees had nowhere to play Montero

  32. cofuzz September 27th, 2012 at 7:57 pm

    igotid88 September 27th, 2012 at 7:54 pm
I wonder if the fact that nova is striking out more people is causing this. i know doesn’t make sense

Just anecdotally, it seems that when Nova keeps the ball down, he gets a lot of ground balls and few strikeouts, a la Chien Ming Wang in his heyday.
When Nova leaves the ball up, he strikes out a lot more hitters, but is more prone to the gopher ball.
Today, he seems to be keeping it down fairly well, but lost control there for a couple batters.

  33. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 27th, 2012 at 7:57 pm

Love Nova. Love winning more at this point in the season. Gotta make hay with the O’s sitting.

  34. Captain Clutch September 27th, 2012 at 7:57 pm

They really need Arod to wake up. He came off the DL hot and now he has been totally lost recently.

  35. Yankees_Fan September 27th, 2012 at 7:58 pm

    Now gimme a homer!

  36. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 27th, 2012 at 7:58 pm

Hey jmills. I can’t say GO JAYS tonight. I’m sure you understand why.

    ;)

  37. Jerkface September 27th, 2012 at 7:59 pm

The Yankees did not sign Cespedes = The Yankees had no room on the roster for Cespedes

But they had enough room to sign a worse 5th OFer named Raul Ibanez instead (who went on to play 90 games in the outfield).

Jones got 65 games in the Of.

Thats 155 games in the OF that could have been divy’d up by Cespedes & company.

(as well as 56 games by Wise, 22 games by Dickerson, and 4 games by McDonald)

  38. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 27th, 2012 at 7:59 pm

You have got to be kidding me. I thought that was gone!

  39. Yankees_Fan September 27th, 2012 at 8:00 pm

I’m really not liking the way this game is going. That inning blew!

  40. Captain Clutch September 27th, 2012 at 8:00 pm

Well that stinks. Nova can’t give up any more runs or this game could be over. Girardi needs to have a short leash with him tonight.

  41. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 27th, 2012 at 8:01 pm

I guess the good news is that they’ve at least hit the ball.

  42. Jerkface September 27th, 2012 at 8:01 pm

Gardner & Cespedes couldn’t somehow co-exist in 237 games worth of OF? Granderson badly needed time off during the summer. Cespedes can play CF.

  43. Hardcore Yankee Fan September 27th, 2012 at 8:02 pm

I say it all the time. Cano is EASILY one of the laziest players I have ever seen and undoubtedly one of the dumbest.

  44. Jerkface September 27th, 2012 at 8:02 pm

Cespedes has played 96 games in the OF & 25 times @ DH. That is basically Raul Ibanez’ defensive positioning this season. NO ROOM!

  45. mick September 27th, 2012 at 8:03 pm

no doubt nova must be left off the PS roster
take experienced relievers who earned it in the pen this year
nova will not start and serves no purpose in the pen
lowe is multi-purpose as is phelps.

leave off jones if gardner can play LF.
    bench of nix,chavez,ibanez, stewart, nunez

4 starters + joloroso lowe eppada

this leaves 1 opening…jones or nova

  46. Yankees_Fan September 27th, 2012 at 8:04 pm

Tough to read, but Can shouldn’t have advanced that much.

  47. jmills September 27th, 2012 at 8:04 pm

Trish, no prob amigo! :) Watching Robin Williams on Broadway.

  48. Captain Clutch September 27th, 2012 at 8:06 pm

I think the 3-2 pitch to a nothing hitter was worse than the homerun. I can deal with a single homerun to a decent hitter. Martin calls some really stupid pitches sometimes.

  49. mick September 27th, 2012 at 8:06 pm

i forgot phelps again for the 12th pitcher
    jones and nova stay home

    if gardner can play
swisher or tex can dh, the other plays 1st

  50. Shame Spencer September 27th, 2012 at 8:07 pm

He’s straying from the zone.. looks like he’s afraid to throw it over the plate.

  51. mick September 27th, 2012 at 8:08 pm

i would give phelps novas next start next Tues. if he needs the work.

  52. mick September 27th, 2012 at 8:09 pm

    hows that for baseball talk…..?
not apropos for an in game thread?

  53. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 27th, 2012 at 8:10 pm

mick, I agree that Nova has been too erratic this season, too erratic since returning, and hasn’t had a banner season. The Yanks will need to take a long man (or two?) and if Phelps is going to be used in any other manner, then they’ll need either Lowe or Garcia. I’m absolutely comfortable with Lowe in that role.

  54. Shame Spencer September 27th, 2012 at 8:11 pm

I believe there is no such thing as impossible, only improbable :)

If you can say it in a graduation speech, it can’t be wrong.

  55. jackamir September 27th, 2012 at 8:12 pm

Jerkface— Give it a break! You made your point… Cespedes is the next Mickey Mantle….You have hammered your point…We all agree…I even wish Cespedes was my son….

  56. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 27th, 2012 at 8:12 pm

    Come on Yanks!

They need to find a way to manufacture some runs.

Gose is a really good player.

  57. Jerkface September 27th, 2012 at 8:14 pm

Jayson Nix started 11 games in the OF! Is this real life?

  58. mick September 27th, 2012 at 8:15 pm

maybe this is what randy meant by there being limited baseball discussion here…

  59. GregD September 27th, 2012 at 8:16 pm

Nova needs to keep them right here

  60. cofuzz September 27th, 2012 at 8:17 pm

Gose has hardly been a really good player in the major leagues.
AAA stats don’t count for anything up here.
Ask Steve Pearce. (Or any number of AAAA players in any organization.)

  61. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 27th, 2012 at 8:17 pm

Interesting dynamic with the O’s going to fenway. Talk about a total juxtaposition! Remember how the O’s absolutely annihilated the Sux’ playoff hopes, how Andino trash talked for days, and how Buck said negative things about the Sux. I HOPE the Sux are in the mood for some serious payback. They could singlehandedly help to sink the O’s.

Anyone think they are looking at it the same way?

  62. Shame Spencer September 27th, 2012 at 8:18 pm

OMG.. Tonight is when Bud Selig’s mouth flaps on Michael Kay??

Sh*t. I do not want to have to watch that commercial 100 more times before this game is out.

  63. GregD September 27th, 2012 at 8:19 pm

    I don’t like this……

  64. jmills September 27th, 2012 at 8:19 pm

Cofuzz, I hear what you are saying, but Gose is interesting.

  65. cofuzz September 27th, 2012 at 8:19 pm

Gose as a big leaguer: .221/.289/.310
    That’s an OPS of .599

Mario Mendoza’s career OPS was .507, so I guess he’s above the Mendoza line, but those are bad numbers.

  66. GregD September 27th, 2012 at 8:20 pm

    there’s like 40 people in the stands……

  67. jmills September 27th, 2012 at 8:22 pm

Cofuzz, he’s just starting out and well worth the chance ( he would have been down this year except for the injuries.)

  68. Shame Spencer September 27th, 2012 at 8:22 pm

JF – In every year since at least 2007 (I didn’t get further than that) we’ve carried more than 4 regular OFers. In 2010 we had 9 guys trading time at various points. We stuck with only 6 last year.

  69. GregD September 27th, 2012 at 8:22 pm

I think they need to get somebody up in the bullpen….

  70. jackamir September 27th, 2012 at 8:23 pm

I think the Red Sox have packed their luggage and made their off season vacation plans.. I would be surprised if they win a game the rest of the way..

  71. mick September 27th, 2012 at 8:23 pm

again, why don’t we have a real 3B in there vs a real pitcher?
    why no chavez against Morrow?
punishment for his 2 out brainfart?

  72. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 27th, 2012 at 8:23 pm

I’ve only watched Gose of late – games against the O’s and the Rays – and he’s gotten some timely hits and has made some really nice plays in the field. Maybe I should say that I think he has what it takes to develop into a really good player for the Jays.

  73. Shame Spencer September 27th, 2012 at 8:23 pm

*sigh* Oh man bad D….. bad, bad D.

  74. GregD September 27th, 2012 at 8:23 pm

    game’s getting out of hand

  75. GregD September 27th, 2012 at 8:24 pm

    well, this is not good…….

  76. mick September 27th, 2012 at 8:24 pm

    ========================
about 35 more than we have here at LoHud.

Yes exactly, without even factoring in injuries they had a completely workable way to get Cespedes playing time. If you consider injuries then he would have been a damn life saver.

He has no platoon split, so he would have helped vs righties & lefties. The Yankees signed Ibanez a week after Cespedes signed, so they could have gone into this season with Jones as the platoon DH/bench OFer.

  78. Shame Spencer September 27th, 2012 at 8:25 pm

    —————

We don’t need to play urgent guys, we’re already in the playoffs.

At least it gives us a chance to shake out who the long man will be (tryin my best with that silver lining thing here lol). If Lowe can build on his last couple outtings that’d be a real win.

  79. igotid88 September 27th, 2012 at 8:25 pm

they’re gonna need Phelps to make Nova’s next start. If the Yanks and O’s are still close

  80. jackamir September 27th, 2012 at 8:26 pm

Nova is done— He can’t pitch up in the zone and beat guys..This was a trap game!!!!!

  81. MG September 27th, 2012 at 8:26 pm

ugh, just about every fastball has been up in the last 3 innings, he can’t pitch well with that…

  82. mick September 27th, 2012 at 8:26 pm

go get phelps and give him 4days rest for novas next start.

  83. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 27th, 2012 at 8:26 pm

I think the Yankees pen should have been busy before this.

I believe the Yankees can win this game but you don’t let your pitchers give up 4 runs at this point in the season. I believe Girardi should have pulled Ivan already. At this point you can’t worry about injuring feelings.

    JMO

  84. Shame Spencer September 27th, 2012 at 8:26 pm

I just like proactive thinking and doing.

I would love for Joe to proactively remove Nova right after this batter lol.

  85. Jerkface September 27th, 2012 at 8:27 pm

@ESPNStatsInfo: And now Ivan Nova has the record… 87 extra-base hits allowed by Ivan Nova, setting the #Yankees single-season record

  86. Shame Spencer September 27th, 2012 at 8:27 pm

Or preferably a batter ago, but I’m trying not to deal in hindsight at the moment or I might cry…

  87. Shame Spencer September 27th, 2012 at 8:28 pm

It’s amazing how Hughes was pulled but Nova was left to get out of a bases loaded jam…

  88. longtimefan September 27th, 2012 at 8:29 pm

Girardi left Nova in a lot longer tan Hughes and he allowed more runs??

  89. Shame Spencer September 27th, 2012 at 8:29 pm

4 runs is still doable.. we need to stop the bleeding and get to work. At least it isn’t the 8th inning lol, we still have a chance at this point!!

  90. mick September 27th, 2012 at 8:29 pm

novas problem is the same that joba and ipk had/have.
they don’t know that they are bad or why they are bad.
how can you improve if you don’t know what the problem is or
that you even have a problem?

  91. MG September 27th, 2012 at 8:30 pm

not a good start for Nova, he has most likely pitch himself out of contention for any role in the postseason…

  92. mick September 27th, 2012 at 8:31 pm

you cant compare hughes and nova at this point
hughes is learning to overcome problems
nova is becoming what aj was, a quitter…
    they are the anti-pettittes.

  93. Shame Spencer September 27th, 2012 at 8:31 pm

    longtimefan September 27th, 2012 at 8:29 pm

Girardi left Nova in a lot longer tan Hughes and he allowed more runs??
    ——————-

Nova should probably have not been allowed to load the bases.. or if he did, he probably shouldn’t have gotten another batter. I’m also surprised the pen wasn’t busy sooner. He hasn’t look sharped at all tonight… are they that desperate for length? Is our pen that beat up?

  94. mick September 27th, 2012 at 8:31 pm

not a good start for Nova, he has most likely pitch himself out of contention for any role in the postseason…
    ===============
with what he is right now, it would be even more a disaster to put him in the pen.

  95. Nick in SF September 27th, 2012 at 8:31 pm

The silver lining is there’s still time to have Nova deported from Canada.

One would think, but again, that’s way too logical.

CC, Andy, Kuroda & only if we need to use him, Hughes…..Now let’s wrap up the division….losing this game puts a damper on our chances for best record in the AL though….UGH! :-(

  99. Shame Spencer September 27th, 2012 at 8:33 pm

Nova still has a lot of potential and is a couple years younger than Hughes. I’ve been a big fan of both and gotten down on them when they suck. Right now, you can’t even compare though.. Hughes has really come into his own. And I cannot reconcile the logic of pulling Hughes a couple games back and not having Nova on a short leash.

11 pitchers – in no particular order

    Pettitte
    CC
    Hughes
    Kuroda
    Soriano
    DRob
    Logan
    Joba
    Lowe/Garcia
    Phelps
    Rapada/Eppley

This team has zero comeback or killer instinct in them.

Tonight they have a chance to gain a half-game on the Os, get a two-game lead on them, and tie with Texas for the best record in the AL and they’re blowing it against a LAST PLACE TEAM – what a disgrace!

The offense is almost exactly like the 1992 Yankees BA and OBP wise – check baseball-reference.com – only they have alot more homeruns which means they’ve scored less runs WITHOUT the homeruns than the ’92 team.

Take away the pitching (overall) and this team is the ’92 Yanks.

There isn’t a single Yankee hitter I would mind being traded or let go in the offseason save Jeter, that’s how sick I am at looking at this pathetic .261-hitting offense which is probably among teams with the least amount of three or more hits in a row rallies in baseball.

BTW anyone other than me notice the team’s BA and OBP has gone down considerably since the mid-late ’90s?

It is time the Yanks sign and trade for guys who can hit say .285 or better regardless of their power. Start with bringing back Ichiro for a year cheap, signing Melky Cabrera and David Ortiz for two years each, trading A-Rod to the Dodgers, Granderson for prospects, and letting go of Swisher and Ibanez.

  114. jmills September 27th, 2012 at 8:42 pm

You just don’t want to see your starting pitcher giving up 4 runs. There will be some games where the scores are high, but that’s just not postseason baseball. I don’t care who it is, 4 ER from your starter at this point in the season is probably 2 ER too many.

And if you see it emerging as a trend, even worse.

The issue isn’t this game with Morrow, it was not taking advantage of the game with Vasquez. They don’t have guys who have tough ABs anymore. That’s how they would beat guys pitching well like Morrow.

Well, i had the feeling that this would be the game we would lose this series. Nova has been pretty awful. Its kinda of like when AJ use to pitch for us… Dont watch, and chalk it up as a loss. I like our chances in the next three games. Kuroda, Pettitte, and hughes… take 3 over 4 and were in good shape.

hughes is learning to overcome problems
nova is becoming what aj was, a quitter…
    they are the anti-pettittes.

    ———

Pretty sure you can go back 4-6 months and find a post from you with Hughes and Nova reversed.

This was a bad season from Nova but no sense comparing him to Hughes or AJ for that matter. He has about 300 less major league innings than Hughes and well you know how inexperienced he is compared to AJ.

I don’t think it’s the same. Hughes had a dead arm the beginning of the year. And came off a his highest innings pitched. The closest he had to that many innings was 3 years prior. Nova has had consistent 180+ innings the last 3 years.

  149. jmills September 27th, 2012 at 9:01 pm

  150. MG September 27th, 2012 at 9:03 pm

count me among those who wants a new centerfielder next year-Granderson just doesn’t make contact nearly enough, that was an awful AB because two of the pitches he missed were mistakes.

  151. Yankees_Fan September 27th, 2012 at 9:03 pm

I love my Yankees but that was pathetic. First and second with no outs and we come out with nothing? Granderson has been useless offensively lately, striking out so much.

  152. Captain Clutch September 27th, 2012 at 9:03 pm

Assuming that the Yanks don’t come back in this game. Their last 3 losses have been because of Nunez, Logan and Nova. That’s really not a surprise considering how bad those players have been all year for different reasons. 2 bad pitches cost Nova but that has been his season all year.

  153. blake September 27th, 2012 at 9:04 pm

Granderson looks like he swings hard in case he hits it.

  154. Tabbert September 27th, 2012 at 9:04 pm

Trisha- That is very True. However… I was expecting/ hoping to take three of four this series. I figured that tonight’s game would be the most difficult to win since nova was on the mound.

  155. Captain Clutch September 27th, 2012 at 9:06 pm

I will be surprised if the Yanks don’t shop Granderson this off season. They can definitely get a useful player for him. I would rather keep Swisher and Ichiro over what Granderson will cost next year and as a free agent.

  156. NYY_Girl_Penny September 27th, 2012 at 9:06 pm

Do the NYY lead MLB with NOT scoring with 0 out and RISP ? If not you know they are very close.

Granderson not only leads the AL in strikeouts but he also leads the league in striking out seeing 3 pitches.. Pretty embarrassing .

  157. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 27th, 2012 at 9:06 pm

Tab, if we don’t take this, it’s still possible that we will take 3 out of 4. The frustrating part is that we could have picked up some ground on the O’s.

Just tuned in to the game. Isn’t Morrow the same Jays pitcher who pitched a dominating high strikeout one hitter around 2 years ago? You got him from the Mariners, correct?

Like Tabbert, I had a bad feeling about the Yankees chances with Morrow on the mound.

  162. jmills September 27th, 2012 at 9:08 pm

Tabbert, look on the bright side, you weren’t comfortable with Nova and the Jays have Morrow on the other side. Might as well get the worst over first; and by the way,…. It isn’t over yet.

  164. Captain Clutch September 27th, 2012 at 9:09 pm

  165. NYY_Girl_Penny September 27th, 2012 at 9:09 pm

Legit concern here , if the yanks look this bad against toronto how can we expect them to go anywhere in the PS?

  166. jmills September 27th, 2012 at 9:10 pm

Hi YT!, we got Morrow for Brandon League.

  167. Captain Clutch September 27th, 2012 at 9:10 pm

  168. Shame Spencer September 27th, 2012 at 9:11 pm

trisha – After the last two starts, I don’t think Nova sees any more playing time this year.. but he got his innings in and will be digesting some humble pie in the off season. Nova and Phelps should be fun to watch for next year.

… 1-56? Can we get there?

6 outs.. 5 runs.. a tall order for sure. We need some momentum asap.

  169. NYY_Girl_Penny September 27th, 2012 at 9:11 pm

Captain Clutch, id rather see Posada become the skipper of this team .. Then again Id take virtually anyone over Girardi!

  170. blake September 27th, 2012 at 9:11 pm

I like Nova but they probably can’t let him make his next start….these games are just too important….now tonight it wouldn’t have mattered because they cant hit Morrow anyway….but he’s got to give them more than he did…..let Phelps make Nova’s last start and go ahead and transition Ivan to the bullpen to help there in the postseason.

  174. Tabbert September 27th, 2012 at 9:13 pm

    Trisha-

I am done worrying about the Orioles and done worrying about winning the east. If we blow the lead we had in the final week of the season, in which we three of the worst teams in baseball… we don’t deserve to be champs of the east. The Yankees will either step it up and win the east, or they won’t. None of it really matters anyways. This team will be judged on how they do in the playoffs. Does winning the division make it easier to win in the playoffs? Sure. But does it guarantee anything? No. I am done stressing out about it. The Playoffs will already bring enough.

  175. Yankee Trader September 27th, 2012 at 9:13 pm

Not surprised Granderson, Ichiro, Ibanez and Swisher don’t have a hit tonight. Morrow has reverse splits and lefties hitting a measley .194, righties .258

  176. mick September 27th, 2012 at 9:13 pm

Does anyone realize that we have a TINY, SKINNY, Center Fielder, That all of a sudden is blasting 40+ homers a season? He must be on drugs too. How can such a small man be such a power hitter? They need to test grandy for PEDS.

Another blown opportunity for the Yanks, who seem to want the Orioles as close as they can.

  190. jmills September 27th, 2012 at 9:20 pm

Tabbert, thanks. Encarnacion and Bautista have done nothing to desreve bad news.

  191. NYY_Girl_Penny September 27th, 2012 at 9:20 pm

Granderson is such an enigma.. Hes tiny (compared to most mlb players) speaks well and appears to be more educated than most (not Mussina smart) has monster power for his size (most his HR arent cheapies) has crazy fast hands, has awful guess where/what pitch is coming, over anxious, m. isses damn near every pitch that isnt in his wheelhouse, hes addicted to sweet gerkins.. Oh wait the last thing i said was

  192. blake September 27th, 2012 at 9:20 pm

“How can such a small man be such a power hitter? ”

because he’s got a swing tailored for Yankee Stadium…..and because he swings for the fences every swing…..

Willie Mays was listed at 5’10, 170 lbs and hit 660 homers in much bigger stadiums.

…..let Phelps make Nova’s last start and go ahead and transition Ivan to the bullpen to help there in the postseason.
    —————-

I agree about Phelps. Not sure what to do with Nova though. I dunno if he makes the PS roster… I’m too stressed to count to eleven right now, but tomorrow I plan on dedicating most of my work day to sorting out the pen lol :D

  195. Shame Spencer September 27th, 2012 at 9:21 pm

“Eppley and Lowe are better at what they do than Nova would be in their roles.”

I doubt it….Nova can strike guys out….he was very good tonight for a little while…he might be pretty effective out of the pen….I’d try him there as he’s more talented and has better stuff than their current middle guys.

  197. jmills September 27th, 2012 at 9:22 pm

I think Lowe and Phelps are ahead of Nova to be the long man for the play offs. Nova can’t help them with the way he looks now. Belt high fastballs isn’t going to help anyone.

Now 6 outs…6 runs…I’d say more than tall at this point Shame.

Morrow outpitched Nova. However, if Nova gave up one run, we still might be scoreless.

Yeah, like their record represents the way a guy like Morrow pitches. This game is all Morrow’s gem. Don’t be fooled by records, he pitched like a solid starter. Totally opposite Nova, who might not make the postseason roster.

  217. Shame Spencer September 27th, 2012 at 9:29 pm

This game blows.. but, on the plus side, I have created the most amazing thing. I took a packet of gushers and emptied them into a fruit roll up, which I then wrapped in a fruit by the foot. So all in all, this night wasn’t a total bust I guess. No thanks to the Yanks but whatevs..

  218. blake September 27th, 2012 at 9:29 pm

Hope your Yanks win it all this year!

  221. blake September 27th, 2012 at 9:30 pm

When I saw they were facing Morrow tonight I cringed a bit….he’s just got the kind of stuff that can dominate this lineup if he throws strikes….he would have given most teams fits tonight.

  222. Tabbert September 27th, 2012 at 9:31 pm

    Blake-

You missed my point. I was simply throwing out a random reason to have a suspension that grandy is on drugs… not that I think or believe that he is. I understand that his swing is tailor made for Yankees Stadium. Apparently a lot of people just assume Encarnacion and Bautista take them though. ” Hey there is no way they can be power hitters all of sudden! they must be on drugs” .

That stuff really irritates me. Apparently people who make statements like that have no respect for jose bautista, or know anything about how hard he has worked to obtain every bit of his success at the MLB level. That dude is very serious about his craft, and has one of the hardest work ethics in the game. The guy does not deserve to be accused of taking drugs every year. Do people honestly believe that he has never been tested? A dude comes out of nowhere and blast 50+ homers… And MLB didn’t test him? Cmon now. Just because a lot of power hitters in the past have been on drugs, does not mean that every single power hitter that comes through MLB does.

  223. Nick in SF September 27th, 2012 at 9:32 pm

yea I agree that’s dumb….I like Bautista….I wish we had him! Actually I think if there is a scandal with him and the Jays in general its more about somebody at Rogers Centre relaying signs to them than PEDs.

jmills – I do know that things will get better. And I do believe that the Yankees will win it all this year. (Now THAT is faith for ya!) You’d never know it looking at the way they’ve played so far.

Thank you for always supporting the Yanks, no matter what jmills. You are a true lover of the game!

Not saying it made a difference in the score of the game, but Welke’s made some AH calls.

  240. Captain Clutch September 27th, 2012 at 9:43 pm

This ump is a loser talking to Martin like that. Who in the world is he to talk down to him. That pitch wasn’t even close to a strike.

  243. MG September 27th, 2012 at 9:44 pm

One interesting scenario could have the Yankees and O’s tie for the AL East as well as the #1 wild card seed with the loser of the division playoff game hosting the wild card game the next day, right?

  244. trisha - true pinstriped blue September 27th, 2012 at 9:45 pm

    Good, this torture is over.

Morrow pitched a great game. Yankees had no umph – or not much.

  245. Yankees_Fan September 27th, 2012 at 9:46 pm

Shame are you still around? I crafted an answer for you, as I said I would. I hope it’s sufficient at least for now. If I don’t stick around to go back and forth with it, it’s not that I am refusing to do so. It’s that my head is hurting so much right now (allergies yes, but this game didn’t help, ha ha) that I just really feel like powering down.
