Yankees rally to keep pace

Tweet [1]

This one looked bad. Phil Hughes was struggling, the Yankees were down by four and the out-of-town scoreboard showed a big Orioles lead. The Yankees were as close as they’ve come to losing their grip on first place in the American League East, but they put together a late comeback that carried them to a huge 9-6 win in their series finale against Toronto. A three-run seventh inning tied the game, and a two-run eighth put the Yankees in front. Eduardo Nunez had the go-ahead sac fly, and Derek Jeter’s third hit was a cushion-building RBI single (with Brett Gardner running on the play). Curtis Granderson’s ninth-inning single tacked on. Hughes allowed five runs through 4.2 innings, but Derek Lowe, Boone Logan and Dave Robertson delivered 3.1 hitless innings of relief before Rafael Soriano pitched into and out of trouble to seal it.
