Kuroda vs. Dice K is like Godzilla vs. Mothra

  2. GoldGlove9486 October 1st, 2012 at 12:24 pm

I would hope all pitchers are on a short leash with Phelps ready, especially Tuesday. I can’t believe he’s letting Nova start.

  3. Jerkface October 1st, 2012 at 12:24 pm

Nova vs Lester is the only game here where we are at a disadvantage

  4. G. Love October 1st, 2012 at 12:24 pm

    Jerkface,

I was just guessing what the numbers would be in comparison. What would an .875 OPS season look like in actually stat numbers for Arod?

  5. blake October 1st, 2012 at 12:27 pm

“Jeter is still below his career numbers and not really up to the same par as when he was doing very well. If A-rod was going to have a ‘jeter like resurgance’ we’d be talking about like an .850-.875 OPS”

    Which would be awesome.

  6. blake October 1st, 2012 at 12:29 pm

If Alex could put up a .875 OPS over 150 games we wouldnt be having a problem…..

  7. tucker October 1st, 2012 at 12:32 pm

Sure, the Rangers negotiated a bad contract w A Rod. Then Hank negotiated an even worse contract. No way they should have resigned A Rod, particularly after his opt out saved the Rangers millions that they were obligated to pay the Yanks under the ARod-Soriano deal.

It is probably the dumbest contract signed over the past decade. Though, now Hal is holding it over the current team like a Damacles sword. That money should come out of Hank’s trust fund, not the Yanks’ future.

  8. Jerkface October 1st, 2012 at 12:32 pm

    Rough calculations but it would look like .285/.370/.505 ~28 2B, 1 3B, 25 HR

Read all the posts from this morning.

Here’s my erudite addition to all of the thinking:

    Play today, win today.

    GO YANKS!

  10. blake October 1st, 2012 at 12:33 pm

. What would an .875 OPS season look like in actually stat numbers for Arod?”

Assuming hed played 140-150 games probably 30-35 homers, 30-35 doubles, 120 RBI and a .285 BA.

Badically if he had done that this year I think the division would have been over already …..

  11. Jerkface October 1st, 2012 at 12:35 pm

And the numbers I posted were based on 550 AB

  12. hardwired7 October 1st, 2012 at 12:35 pm

Given how much is potentially at stake, there is no way in hell I’d let Nova start.

In fact, Phelps should never have been pulled from the rotation. He’s by far a better option than Nova.

  13. DONNYBROOK October 1st, 2012 at 12:38 pm

Phelps is not only better than Nova, he is better than Hughes.

  14. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 1st, 2012 at 12:41 pm

Oh yeah, one more thing. I took a look at the prediction chart and it seems like only two people guessed #s of wins that would qualify – Trigeminal Neuralgia Yank (my favorite Sux hater!) and sammiejohnson both guessed 95. Nobody guessed 92, 93, or 94. Here’s hoping that Trigeminal and sammie are both correct!

we shoulda traded high on nova, i love giradi but why not start phelps tomorrow? we should win tonight and maybe the rays beat the O’s meanin if we won tomorrow wed end the season at worst tied…

if they do end tied withg the O’s what happens?

  16. Shame Spencer October 1st, 2012 at 12:46 pm

Actually, if the Rangers had this ownership group at the time that deal would have turned out pretty well for them. It would have expired in 2010. Hell of a lot better than 2017. They tied their own hands by signing a deal and then not upgrading the rest of the roster. If they had this ownership group at the time, there’s no doubt in my mind they wouldn’t have held back because of Arods deal.

  17. Doc Iac October 1st, 2012 at 12:48 pm

    damn, i had delusions when i said 103 wins….

    weres the sox chart?

Kuroda vs. Dice K is like Godzilla vs. Mothra

Dice-K wasn’t originally scheduled for that last game. I bet Bobby V. put him in there for the japanese pitcher matchup.

  21. Doc Iac October 1st, 2012 at 12:53 pm

haha what a joke the sox are

  22. CountryClub October 1st, 2012 at 12:54 pm

I don’t think I took part in the contest, but I had the Yanks pegged for 97/98 wins. So I’m not that far off. Hopefully 94 or 95 will be enough to win the division.

  23. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 1st, 2012 at 12:55 pm

I was upset with myself that I didn’t predict lower for the Sux at the time we predicted, but I sure didn’t mean that low! I figured I should have gone around 80!

  24. jacksquat October 1st, 2012 at 12:55 pm

    DONNYBROOK October 1st, 2012 at 12:38 pm
Phelps is not only better than Nova, he is better than Hughes.

His ERA is better, but in fairness, he hasn’t pitched a full season as a starter. He has 10 starts with a 3.81 ERA.

That said, I wouldn’t mind them trading Hughes in the offseason if they can get something good for him.

  25. MTU October 1st, 2012 at 12:58 pm

The Sux are gonna have a ton of money to spend in the OS after dumping those contracts on the the boys in Blue out West.

It’s hard to believe but the Dodgers are already committed to the tune of 197 Mil for next season.

What did Hanley, A-Gon, Crawford, Buckett, and Victorino get them ?

    A mountain of debt.

Dumb move IMO. The Sux must have kissed the Blarney stone to pull that one off.

I was in Miami for all the Phillies games this weekend and had the best baseball experience of my life…DiamondClub, seats behind the plate, gluttonly, Mike Stanton hitting a 500 foot homer to a standing ovation just for the distance, walk off win, weather, cheerleader eye candy, on and on

Oh, and I was able to miss Saturday’s heart attack Yankee game

  34. Jerkface October 1st, 2012 at 1:09 pm

I think that though Hughes overall season was not great, there is a lot more promise there now that he has 4 pitches. I’d look to extend or trade him in the offseason.

I think that though Hughes overall season was not great, there is a lot more promise there now that he has 4 pitches. I’d look to extend or trade him in the offseason.

The pitches may exist, but only 1 of them is good. He’s a fastball pitcher with mediocre secondary pitches, and inconsistent command in the strike zone even with the fastball. He’s seems to not have much talent throwing breaking/offspeed pitches. On top of that there is the monstrous HR rate. I would trade him if there is a good deal to be made.

  36. El Duque October 1st, 2012 at 1:13 pm

Yankees have to go after d.wright of the mets! Great 3b guy! Keep Ichiro, keep Ichiro and Martin for 1 year! swisher goes to Texas or Tampa for draft picks!
    My Lineup:

    Jeter SS
    Ichiro RF
    A-rod DH
    Cano 2B
    Wright 3B
    Tex 1B
    Granderson LF
    Martin C
    Gardner CF

Bench: Nunez, Stewart, Dickerson, Chavez and or Melky
    Rotation:
CC, Kuroda, ANdy, Pineda and Hughes (Phelps as Long man)

    Trade Nova!

  37. MTU October 1st, 2012 at 1:14 pm

    Jack-

Send him to SD for Headley.

  38. Jerkface October 1st, 2012 at 1:14 pm

I’d also only extend him for less than 8 million AAV. Jacksquat, you’re right about a lot of that.

  39. Jerkface October 1st, 2012 at 1:15 pm

    Jack-

Send him to SD for Headley.

After Headley’s insane finish to the season that boat has probably sailed.

  40. MTU October 1st, 2012 at 1:16 pm

We all know in our hearts that the Yankees are not gonna give up any of their young ML-tested pitchers.

    Right ?

  41. blake October 1st, 2012 at 1:17 pm

“Hughes’ season is over. What grade would you give him?”

    B-

good year for him IMO…took steps in a positive direction….

  42. blake October 1st, 2012 at 1:19 pm

I agree with JF….I dont think Id just hold on Hughes this winter ….either try to extend him cheaply or shop him.

  43. MTU October 1st, 2012 at 1:20 pm

    Blake-

The Yankees generally do not do extensions.

  44. Jerkface October 1st, 2012 at 1:21 pm

The Yankees generally do not do extensions.

Of course they don’t, but gee whiz they better start if they want to assemble a manageable roster.

  45. MTU October 1st, 2012 at 1:21 pm

    JF-

    Think they will ?

    ;)

  46. Jerkface October 1st, 2012 at 1:22 pm

    Think they will ?

Eh probably not. They will work on a budget using the same old philosophy as before where they decide to just pay market premium on free agents.

  47. MTU October 1st, 2012 at 1:22 pm

Can ya’ change the spots on a leopard ?

    :)

  48. blake October 1st, 2012 at 1:24 pm

“The Yankees generally do not do extensions.”

that policy is as outdated as actually spending money is for the Yankees.

  49. MTU October 1st, 2012 at 1:26 pm

    Blake-

Maybe so but the Yankees do not like to do anything before they feel they have to.

I think they should reconsider that too but I doubt they will.

Old habits die hard even when they no longer make perfect sense.

  50. Against All Odds October 1st, 2012 at 1:28 pm

On top of that there is the monstrous HR rate. I would trade him if there is a good deal to be
    made.

    Justin Upton come on down

  51. MTU October 1st, 2012 at 1:29 pm

I think Hughes and Kennedy want to be reunited.

    Don’t you ?

    :)

  52. blake October 1st, 2012 at 1:30 pm

I think for Hughes the positives are:

    -that he stayed healthy,
    - he established a new high in innings….
-he developed a workable breaking ball and at least has 4 decent pitches now
    -did really walk anybody
-showed some level of consistency in stretches.

    negatives:
    - homer rate
-still struggles with controlling bat speed and stuggles when he doesn’t have his best fastball or fastball command.
-still needs to improve the secondary pitches and learn to use his CU vs RHH better.

I think it was a good season for him….a season where he finally moved forward a bit rather than treading water or moving backwards. He still needs to work on some things….he needs to sequence pitches better…..he needs to find a way to better get outs on his bad days etc…..but I’m pleased with his year overall.

  53. blake October 1st, 2012 at 1:31 pm

“Maybe so but the Yankees do not like to do anything before they feel they have to.”

    agreed

  54. Bronx Jeers October 1st, 2012 at 1:31 pm

I think they’ll try and extend Robbie but I doubt Boras will bite. They did try and extend Martin last winter no?

In other news I’ve got in-laws for a min. of 3 weeks so the Yanks really need to go deep into October for me to keep my sanity. Or I should say what’s left of my sanity.

  55. MTU October 1st, 2012 at 1:32 pm

    Jeers-

    Why B Normal ?

Just give in and don’t fight it anymore.

    :)

  56. blake October 1st, 2012 at 1:33 pm

as I said yesterday….I’m not wild about how much Hughes is throwing the new slider now…..I like the pitch but he’s falling for it like he did his cutter and he needs to resist that urge. He’s a fastball pitcher and he needs to establish that first in every start….find his fastball command and use the secondary pitches to keep hitters off balance and to get guys out with. Hughes can’t pitch backwards……

  57. Warning Track Power October 1st, 2012 at 1:34 pm

C.C. on the mound tonight. No other starting pitcher should be on the mound but
him in game 1 of this crucial series.

  58. MTU October 1st, 2012 at 1:35 pm

    Blake-

And Nova has trouble pitching forwards.

    Let’s graft ‘em together.

    :)

  59. blake October 1st, 2012 at 1:36 pm

    MTU,

If Hughes had Nova’s secondary pitches and velocity then he’d be really good…..I guess you could reverse that and say if Nova had the deception in his delivery and command that Hughes has then he’d be good too ;)

  60. Jerkface October 1st, 2012 at 1:37 pm

Things will really get nuts if the Rangers, Angels and Rays all somehow sweep because it would cause a three-way tie between the A’s, Angels and Rays at 91-71. In that scenario, Oakland gets a choice between two options because it won its season series against both Los Angeles and Tampa Bay:

    1. It can play at home Thursday against the Angels with the Rays showing up to play the winner on Friday

    2. It can rest on Thursday and travel to play the winner of L.A.-Tampa Bay on Friday.

  61. Trigeminal Neuralgia Yank October 1st, 2012 at 1:37 pm

    Trisha ,
Seems like a long time ago those numbers were predicted. I’m proof a blind squirrel finds a nut occasionally . Go Yanks! Crush the sux.

I think they’ll try and extend Robbie but I doubt Boras will bite. They did try and extend Martin last winter no?

They have shown a willingness to sign batters in arbitration to a multi year contract instead of going to arbitration/signing a 1 year deal. But they don’t do that for pitchers. Cano & Jeter were both given multi-year deals in arbitration.

  78. Madrugador October 1st, 2012 at 2:25 pm

Maddon doesn’t play the field and I just can’t see Upton who is looking for a big contract somewhere wanting to dive for that ball in the outfield and possibly hurt himself for nothing. Upton has an attitude that brings his whole team down. I hope the Sox sign him for a ton of money.

  79. Tabbert October 1st, 2012 at 2:27 pm

Tampa knows they HAVE to win tonight. So… i expect them to pull out all the stops to win. Now… we just need them to win and for oakland to lose tonight. That would give the rays another MUST WIN game tomorrow.lets go rays!

Tampa is such a rabid sports town the Trop will be packed with Rays fans screaming at the top of their lung to support their team.

I’m sure there will be at least 15,000 at the game tonight, what a joke…

  82. jacksquat October 1st, 2012 at 2:39 pm

I want Oakland to win. I want the Rangers to lose so the Yankees have a shot at best record. I do not want to play Detroit in a 5 game series. I don’t think the Rays will lie down if they are out of it.

  83. Tabbert October 1st, 2012 at 2:39 pm

Alex Cobb pitching the biggest game of the year for the rays and the yankees. Why can’t price be pitching tonight?!? Damn.

  84. Tabbert October 1st, 2012 at 2:42 pm

    jacksquat-

Very true. I would much rather face any other teams number 1 twice than have to face verlander twice. The rangers offense scares the heck out of me though. Only good thing is… their rotation is not very good.

  85. EA October 1st, 2012 at 2:43 pm

I agree with Mike, they need to start Lowe in one of these games and have Phelps shadow every starter

  86. Tabbert October 1st, 2012 at 2:45 pm

Actually… we only trail the rangers by a game. So we need oakland two win 2 of 3, but for texas to still win the division. That would set up a Rangers vs Tigers ALDS. Then we would get the orioles or A’s. If we can avoid the Tigers AND Rangers in the first round… that would be pretty damn sweet.

  87. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 1st, 2012 at 2:47 pm

    “What’s cc Era against Boston”

    2009 – 2.22 – 4 GS

    2010 – 3.96 – 4 GS

    2011 – 6.39 – 5 GS

2012 – 9.00 – but he has only one GS that I can see

The good news is that the player who hit him the hardest in 2012 is no longer with the team.

To see the box from that game, go here:

    http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday.....8;mode=box

  88. jacksquat October 1st, 2012 at 2:48 pm

Yeah, ideally the Rangers win tonight but lose the last 2, with the Yankees winning at least 2 of 3 vs Boston. That sets up a tie for best record which the Yankees win. That way the Rays are still in it tomorrow if they win tonight, which means Shields is guaranteed to still pitch.

  89. Hassey October 1st, 2012 at 2:48 pm

Good omen? Bad Omen? Orioles team charter to Tampa caught on fire = emergency landing

  90. Jerkface October 1st, 2012 at 2:49 pm

  91. Tabbert October 1st, 2012 at 2:50 pm

  92. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 1st, 2012 at 2:50 pm

And of course you always have to watch out for the pesky Yankee killer Ciriaco.

  93. Tabbert October 1st, 2012 at 2:53 pm

  94. Tidrow October 1st, 2012 at 2:54 pm

  95. austinmac October 1st, 2012 at 2:57 pm

I do think Tampa will respect the game and play hard no matter if they are in it or not. I wish Price hadn’t pitched yesterday.

At this point, every game makes me nervous.CC needs to be on his game as Buccholz has been pitching pretty well.

I agree Hughes is a solid no. 3 starter. He rarely has a great game, but usually keeps the games compettive.

Bronx was convicted of recommending AROD’s contract. He got a very long sentence. Or was that Levine? I get so confused.

How is homefield determined for the WC game if there is a division playoff game?
Does that game count in the standings between wildcards?
Or is it det. by record before the div. winner game?

  99. RhapsodyInBlue October 1st, 2012 at 3:03 pm

I’d prefer Freddie in the rotation over Nova or Hughes at this point in time.

Time for Maddon to reach into his bag of tricks and come up with some new type of uber-shift strategy that revolutionizes baseball.

BloggingBombers Here’s why so many fans hate Hughes: Because Posada & Giambi once compared him to young Clemens. That’s it. Expectations were just too high.

    ********

Yankees prospect followers and certain fans having unrealistic and high expectations on a former prospect/player – - – -wow, never heard that one before – - – -

  105. Jerkface October 1st, 2012 at 3:18 pm

The average Yankee fan isn’t a prospect follower.

Just though I would give Lohud the first heads up.

Andruw Jones is in the lineup tonight. I like the way he has been swinging the bat lately and he is a career 1-4 off of Buchholz!!!

So much for Bobby V going all out to spoil the Yanks season

Good news of no Pedroia or Ellsbury tonight. I think they have earned a rest for the remainder of the season.

    Lol, my thoughts exactly…

  113. austinmac October 1st, 2012 at 3:34 pm

In reality, all games can be lost. They shouldn’t be, but in baseball the worst teams win 35% of the time.

It may be somewhat coincidental, but the Red Sox were over .500 when Ortiz got hurt. He is still, when healthy, the force in their line up. Will they give him the two years he seems to want?

  114. Warning Track Power October 1st, 2012 at 3:36 pm

How loose are you in advance of the game tonight?
Are your palms sweaty or is tonight just another game?

  115. austinmac October 1st, 2012 at 3:38 pm

    Warning Track,

My hands are sweaty. Game 160 when tied is about as nerve wracking as the regular season gets. But, I feel good. I have my lucky shirt ready. I will loosen up by pacing about 15 minutes before game time. That was somewhat therapeutic. :)

I’m not nervous; but I am excited. I’m half a notch below playoff type excitement.

This what the Red Sox live for hurting the Yankees they are like wounded dog take as many down

    Bryan Hoch ?@BryanHoch
Yankees lineup vs. Boston: Jeter 6 Ichiro 7 Rodriguez DH Cano 4 Teixeira 3 Swisher 9 Granderson 8 Martin 2 Chavez 5 Sabathia LHP

I would flip Teix & Swish and Cano & Arod. But it’s a good lineup. Now just stay freaking healthy!

  119. austinmac October 1st, 2012 at 3:43 pm

Hal is at the stadium. I wonder if he’ll stay for the game or just picking up his check.
