mick – nah. There’s nothing I’m really curious about. I’m watching the Nats and Pats games.

Hey mick, you know what they say about pitching! Look at the runs given up by SP thus far in the postseason. Like hen’s teeth.

    YAY!!!!! NATS TAKE THE LEAD!!!!!

  8. Barry October 7th, 2012 at 6:16 pm

Rick wrote wonderful piece on the passing of The Scooter a few years ago. Moving, insightful and very smart.

chad:More than enough, that’s why they traded Montero.

1 year and Montero is a failed prospect. Tough crowd

  26. Shame Spencer October 7th, 2012 at 6:35 pm

Did the game start?? Can someone tell me what the hell is going on lol??

  27. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 7th, 2012 at 6:36 pm

I actually might just do my good luck cheer on the game thread and then focus on the game. The
Rick Carpaniello chat might be an interesting watch, especially if the Yanks mess up and people start melting down. It would be interesting to see how he handled those posts.

  28. JM October 7th, 2012 at 6:37 pm

    8 p.m. start?

  29. Shame Spencer October 7th, 2012 at 6:38 pm

Post from Chad in the chat:

CJ: Hey Tommy, just so everyone knows, it really is raining here. Not hard, but it’s been raining pretty steady for a while. The tarp has been on the field since the end of batting practice. I don’t think this has anything to do with the Cards game.

He’s so thoughtful, that Chad.. what a dreamboat!

  30. theREALkevin October 7th, 2012 at 6:38 pm

The people that say Montero is a failed prospect are the ones who are Yankee apologists and blindly defend every move they make.

Don’t worry, they will be proven wrong in the long run. The trade was not about one season, it was about 4 or 5.

BTW, I wonder when that “Pineda” guy is coming back? Didn’t he have one of the worst injuries possible for a pitcher? The one where hardly any ever come back and become what they once were? Great acquisition.

  31. mick October 7th, 2012 at 6:39 pm

i didnt feel comfortable with a 6 pm start…un-Yankee -like….Yanks are Prime Time.

  32. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 7th, 2012 at 6:46 pm

Last season after they screwed the Yanks they learned their lesson the rest of the postseason and didn’t start games when it was really raining.

But it’s a new season, and it’s only the Yankees!

  33. mick October 7th, 2012 at 6:46 pm

trish: Can we ever have enough pitching?
    chad: Never.

Any word on the start time?

  37. Jerkface October 7th, 2012 at 6:55 pm

Dont know why people are ganging up on Carlo, that strategy is right out of Sun Tzu.

You play your weakest against your opponents best and then your best against the 2nd best and so on. You end up with an advantage in every other game.

General Tian Ji used to horse race with others (royal family members?). Sun Tzu watched and noticed that there were three types of horses: first class, second class, and third class, and they were not terribly different. “Should you race again, I assure your success”, said Sun to Ji. Ji believed Sun and raced again, this time with the king. At the game, Sun said to Ji, “Race your 3rd-class horse with his majesty’s 1st-class, your 1st-class horse with his majesty’s 2nd-class, and your 2nd-class horse with his majesty’s 3rd-class.” In this game, Ji won over the king by losing the first round and winning the other two, a lot of gold awarded to him. Ji then recommended Sun Tze to the king. The king consulted Sun about military issues, and respected him as master.

“The trade was not about one season, it was about 4 or 5.”

That’s funny. Of course you’re correct that it’s silly to call Montero a “failed prospect”, but the above quote was often used by defenders of the trade after Pineda got hurt and some good folks on here tried to declare the whole issue settled.

Now that Montero stubbed his toe on the road to Cooperstown, the trade is about 4 or 5 seasons, not 2012.

I’m glad we’re getting this out of our system before the game starts.

  46. Nick in SF October 7th, 2012 at 7:16 pm

Tyler, has cool weather settled into the St. Louis? I’ve been holding off ordering my Bissinger’s chocolate, but it should be okay to ship now, yes? As long as they don’t ship it by ground through Death Valley.

  47. MG October 7th, 2012 at 7:17 pm

I’ll be really surprised if the Yankees lose the series to the O’s, very surprised…

The radar map for Baltimore shows the rain and clouds completely leaving the area by 8-8:15, once the game starts there won’t be any more rain-the 6 hour radar forecast has nothing but clear skies.

  48. JobaTipsHisCap October 7th, 2012 at 7:20 pm

    That’s encouraging, MG

Make of this what you will. No question that the Reds excelled with their pitching, not so much at all with their hitting. Bit surprise to me was the Giants. They did well in both pitching and hitting, though I don’t know how much Melky contributed to their ranking with respect to hitting (and care even less to try to figure it out.)

    ————–

If you can pitch your ace against an ace, you do that.

The Yanks cannot afford to wait ’til Game 3 to pitch Sabathia and risk pitching him down 0-2, and there’s absolutely no guarantee there’ll be a Game 7. You cannot assume CC will save the season and the Yanks will get to a Game 7, or those two are dangerous assumptions borne of arrogance and quite frankly, stupidity. The Tigers are a lethal team ALDS or ALCS. Miguel Cabrera hasn’t even hit yet and the Tigers still took the first two from the As.

Let’s start Pettitte vs. Verlander cuz Kuroda will beat Fister and Sabathia will beat Scherzer makes no sense whatsoever, especially when Fister and Scherzer have shown they can beat the Yanks regardless of who’s starting for the Yanks. It’s called last year’s ALDS.

By starting CC in Games 1, 4, and 7 of the ALCS you don’t have to start your weakest starter (in this case Hughes.) CC can rest at the latest 11/2 through February X, 2013.

Negate the ace factor, put more pressure on the rest of the opposing rotation ‘Say the Yanks win Game 1 of the ALCS, CC outdueling Verlander or not. Let’s also say CC blows (6 IP, 5 ER), Verlander is solid (6 IP, 1 ER), but the Yanks storm back to win 8-7. That means more pressure on Leyland to start Verlander in Game 4 instead of his worst starter, and it may mean nothing if CC rebounds with a better start in that game.

What I’m saying is if your ace is outpitched by their ace but your team wins anyway, that’s what you want cuz figure your ace will have a better start and that puts even more pressure on their ace to pitch well. Or your ace is more likely to rebound and match their ace if he continues to pitch well.

First things first: the Yanks have to sweep or win it in four to be able to start CC in Games 1, 4, and 7 of the ALCS.

just for the record, i didnt call montero a failed prospect, i called smoak a failed prospect.

  56. Nick in SF October 7th, 2012 at 7:46 pm

Without reading that tsunami of text, I’m saying Sun Tzu > Duh Innings II.

“i didnt call montero a failed prospect, i called smoak a failed prospect.”

Just for the record, my bet on Smoak hitting over 16 homers was a winner and my bet on Montero hitting over 19.5 homers was a loser.

  57. Tyler October 7th, 2012 at 7:51 pm

    Nick-

It’s been cool for a few days here. Topping out in the low 50s. This week is supposed to get back up to the upper 60s/low 70s again though. St. Louis weather is nuts.

Gibson’s had some work done… and man, I shouldn’t have started drinking so long ago.

I thought tonight was drunk night on the blog.

  60. Shame Spencer October 7th, 2012 at 7:56 pm

Don’t you wish someone would tell the TBS guys when they’re estimating they might start the game?

  61. Duh Innings II October 7th, 2012 at 7:57 pm

Here’s why I want the Yanks to start Sabathia in Games 1, 4 & 7 of the ALCS assuming they win the ALDS in three or four games and the Tigers win the ALDS:

    1. Hughes doesn’t start Game 4 and the Yanks have the option to use him as a mopup man or emergency starter in any game including Game 1, or do any of you want Phelps or Lowe burned for Game 1 in case Sabathia stinks or has to be removed? I don’t. ‘Say Sabathia gets injured and has to be taken out after 1 1/3 innings of Game 1, no runs allowed, Hughes comes in pitches 5 IP 1 ER ball. Hughes is an option for Game 4, 5, or 6.

    2. Sabathia draws a lesser starter than Verlander in Game 1 if the As somehow make it a five-game ALDS and Verlander starts Game 5 and Game 3 is the earliest Verlander can pitch which means the Tigers can match Sabathia with Verlander only once (Game 7) if it gets to Game 7.

    3. Sabathia draws Detroit’s ace in Game 1 (Verlander), worst starter in Game 4, and someone other than Verlander in Game 7 if Verlander doesn’t start Games 4 and 7 along with 1. Or he draws Verlander twice (1 & 7) or three times (1, 4 & 7.) Fine. Let it be the best against the best 3X.

    4. Starting Sabathia in Game 1 forces Leyland to decide: Verlander in Games 1, 4 & 7 or 3 & 7 only? If 3 & 7, he paints his team in a corner: they must split or win Games 1 & 2 to avoid a possible 0-2 hole with Verlander, 0-3 if they lose with him.

  76. ron October 7th, 2012 at 8:14 pm

I don’t like cc,or any pitcher on 3 days rest, unless the alternative is ugly, and in the yankees case it is not.
I also have confidence in phelps as a starter.

Showalter beat texas with saunders, and hammels is going against us in game one tonight.
If you absolutely have to use cc on 3 days rest, fine, but twice,no way, when kuroda, pettitte, hughes can equally pitch a gem.
Have faith in you pitchers, and let them grow.
If a starter is getting hit,the pen will be in in no time anyways.

    cc
    pettitte
    kuroda
    hughes

    is fine

I wouldn’t have an issue with kuroda,or pettitte going in game one either.
    Maybe not hughes,or a phelps,nova.
