The Arizona Fall League got started this afternoon, and it didn’t start particularly well for Dellin Betances.
Pitching an inning and two-thirds out of the bullpen, Betances was charged with two runs on a double, two walks and a wild pitch. Both runs scored after Betances was out of the game. He left runners at the corners with two outs, and those two came around on a double. He threw 28 pitches, and only 13 were strikes. For a guy trying to get past control problems, that’s not the Fall debut you’re looking for.
There was better Yankees news in the lineup where David Adams started at third base, batted third and went 1-for-3 with a double and walk. Austin Romine was the starting catcher, batting sixth, and he also doubled and walked. Slade Heathcott started at DH and batted fifth, but he went hitless.
It’s a strong group the Yankees have sent to the Scottsdale Scorpions this fall. In addition to Betances, Adams, Romine and Heathcott, the Yankees sent right-handed pitchers Zach Nuding, Dan Burawa and Mark Montgomery.
