Pettitte in Game 1, the rest is unknown
As expected, Andy Pettitte will start tomorrow’s ALCS opener, but that’s as much as we know about the roster and the rotation.
Because of the unusual schedule with no off day between series, the Yankees will not have a division series starter on normal rest for Game 2. Hiroki Kuroda would be on three-days rest, and lately the Yankees have been trying to give him extra rest. Obviously neither Phil Hughes nor CC Sabathia will be rested enough to start.
David Phelps? Derek Lowe? Add Ivan Nova to the roster for a start?
“Who knows?” Nova said.
Even Joe Girardi doesn’t know yet.
“We’ve got to meet,” he said. “… I’ll let you know tomorrow.”
Girardi said he’ll meet with his coaches tonight to discuss the roster and the rotation. There would seem to be a chance that they’ll decide to carry an extra pitcher and lose a position player. The entire Tigers rotation is right-handed, which might limit the need for both Jayson Nix and Eduardo Nunez.

Ifit comes down to Nix or Nunez I think they’ll chose Nix.
I still don’t know how I’m supposed to celebrate CC’s big game.
The economy of his hometown, Vallejo, is pretty much built around crack, prostitution, and pit bull puppy sales.
And I don’t need a puppy.
I know Alex has not been looking good at the plate, but I feel for him and his situation. It has to be tough to be the player that he has been and not feel down on yourself for what has transpired this series.
ALCS here we come!
The good news for Arod is that he can use the down time between series to get in the cage and — what?
Never mind.
If nova wasn’t good enough to pitch in the last week of the regular season, he’s not good enough to pitch in gm 2 of the ALCS. Pitch phelps.
This is almost better. Yankees have no time to ruminate. Get to Detroit, put the team on the field and see what happens. Can’t be Ny worse than the past couple years. No time to think might work.
Phelps and Nova?
Ibanez singles in the five hole today to score Teixeira from second. How would you have felt today with Arod in the five hole. Do you think he singles in Teixeira?
Arod has played himself out of the line up. I don’t feel bad for him. It is all within his power to change his situation and if he can’t then he still deserves to sit. Unlike you and me, he will sit a lot more comfortably.
On to the next one!

Game is in NY
Detroit gets to them. Yanks at home tomorrow. Just get to bed, and then get back to work tomorrow.
Arod may get some ABs against Coke.
But tomorrow is a new day, new team and new series.
Maybe Joe puts him back in the lineup.
I can’t wait to watch Phil Coke giving the “it’s a pop-up” signal to balls that land in the second deck.
I could see A-Rod getting in against Fister and Sanchez. I think he could have a chance against those guys. Scherzer and Verlander just have too good of stuff for a-Rod right now.
I must say this year’s team already has exceeded my expectations. Holding off the O’s in September displayed a certain grittiness. I hope it continues against The Tigers, who have twice knocked off the Yanks since 2006.
Does anyone else think Selig needs to go because of this new post season schedule? I mean its clearly not fair that the yanks have no off day and the tigers do? They both went 5 games in the DS but because the series’ started at different times the tigers get the advantage? Not even mentioning the 2home 3away DS and the 3home 4away CS??
With no off day, do you put Stewart in for a game or tell Martin to man up?
Though they always say you should be careful what you wish for, I can’t stomach the Cards. I’d love to see the Nats take this. I think.
“Arod has played himself out of the line up.”
Chavez was 0 for 8 with 4 strikeouts this series and is a career .211 postseason hitter. I’ll take my chances with A-Rod
trisha-
I hate the Cards too. Go Nats!
I think the ALCS is 2-3-2 not 3-4.
Yep, 2-3-2. Unless something changed from previous years….
I think you start fresh in the the ALCS with the lineup….meaning Arod goes back to 3B etc….they need him to find it and produce if they are going all the way…. Granderson looked like he found something tonight
Me, too. I hate the, cards.
Harper just cranked one
Give Nova the ball, keep him on a short leash, with Phelps in the wings.
Was that the Joker or Dr. Zaius sitting next to Wolf Blitzer?
Anyone know why Gardner didnt throw home in the 8th when Wieters scored? I think he got the ball before Wieters even touched 3rd. I was briefly watching when I was at work and didnt get a good look.
Screwing the Yanks and their fans again.
Nice 5:07pm ET start when most New York and Baltimore area people are still at work.
Nice how everyone gets a day off save the Yanks.
Games 1 & 5: Pettitte vs. Fister
Games 2 & 6: Kuroda vs. Sanchez (Kuroda on three days’ rest cuz he started Wed.)
Games 3 & 7: Sabathia vs. Verlander
Game 4: Hughes vs. Scherzer
The Yanks can’t start Nova or Phelps in Game 2, Kuroda in 4.
Put another way:
They can’t have their NUMBER TWO STARTER start JUST ONE GAME.
Wainwright looks awful.
The Cards had 4 games in which Harper was horrendous. He’s wide awake now.
Cano sucked against BMore. He was even a bigger disappoint than A-Rod, yet all you read about is how bad A-Rod was.
Nats are looking like they are going to get it done. Cards behind 6-0, though it is still early and the Cards can hit.
“They can’t have their NUMBER TWO STARTER start JUST ONE GAME.”
Sure they it can
Ok, the first and last time I will gripe about SeligPalooza. The Yankees are the #1 seed, and as result, after winning the ALDS in the same number of games as the #3 seed who had the #7 record in the AL, have no day off after the ALDS – so that the have to use a fifth starter in game 2 and have to have their ace on 3 days rest against the #3 seed’s ace on regular rest if they want to have their ace pitch twice in the series.
In sum – Verlander gets to pitch game 3 and 7 on regular rest, which our choice is CC on 3 days rest v. Verlander in game 3 or use CC in game 4, and not have him available for another game.
Plus this potentially messes up the roster.
So the choice is:
1) Aggressive – Pettitte, Kuroda (3 days), CC (3 days), Hughes, Pettitte, Kuroda, CC
2) Conservative – Pettitte, Nova/Phelps/Garcia, Kuroda, CC, Pettitte, Hughes, Kuroda
3) In-between – Pettitte, Nova/Phelps/Garcia, CC (3 days), Kuroda, Pettitte, Hughes, CC.
The question if you carry Nova who doesn’t make the team?
Perhaps go Nova for Joba and make Phelps the 7th inning guy? Weakening the bullpen isn’t good especially if you have to cover a game with Nova or pitchers on 3 days rest.
You probably carry a 12th pitcher even if you go with option 1. But which position player stays home? Nunez?
It’s 2-3-2 like it always is. Where do you come up with 3-4 when the yanks earned hfa?
Awesome, so glad to see the Cards getting it handed to them. keep it going Nats.
Sure they can. Not sure where the it came from.
I think id go:
Game 1: Pettite
game. 2 : Phelps
game 3 : Kuroda
Game 4 : Sabathia
game 5 : Hughes
game 6 : Pettite
Game 7: Sabathia (3 days rest)
If you have the best record in AL, the great prize is: no rest!
Go Expos!!!!!!
Anyone like the Phelps/Lowe combination to start game 2?
Nova, Freddy and Lowe all got the crap beat out of them by the Tigers this year.
Also the Yanks can’t risk starting a kid who wasn’t good enough to make the postseason roster in Game 2, especially if the Yanks lose Game 1.
The Yanks should want it like this:
#3 vs. #3
#2 vs. #4
ace vs. ace
twice each
#4 vs. a hurting #2 (Scherzer)
Ideally, the Yanks smack up Sanchez so badly, they could take out Kuroda after six.

That’s tough for Hughes, but it’s probably the only way to do it. Let’s hope it doesn’t get to game seven, and we beat them in four
According to Bill James’ Baseball IQ app … Yankees vs Fister – Cano 5 for 14 with 1 jack, Chavez 3 for 11, Gardner 3 for 9, Granderson 2 for 10 with 1 HR but 6 Ks, Jeter 6 for 19, Ibañez 2 for 3, Tex 4 for 16 with 1, Swish 3 for 14 with 1, Ichiro 2 for 5, Martin 1 for 5, and of course ARod 1 for 9.
They should hit this guy.
Joba is a statah … Give him he ball in Game 2, but make him dress in a stay puff marshmallow suit …
Typo, Tex 5 for 16 …
I got faith in hughes
I wouldn’t pitch Kuroda on short rest….think I’d pitch Phelps in Game 2. What a screwed up situation
Typo Tex 5 for 16
raymagnetic, most of the Yankee lineup has been a big disappointment this past series. So were the O’s lineup. The pitching was good on both sides, but not as good as the lines indicate.
Personally, while Alex has not looked good, I think Granderson has looked far worse till tonight. Cano hasn’t been all that either. Yet, Alex gets all the press.
Yes, Alex should be doing better than this, but having missed so much time for the broken hand, he has some excuse. What is Cano and Granderson’s excuse for their batting woes? And with Granderson its been pretty much the whole second half of the season.
Prior to him being injured, Alex was hitting the ball really well, even if it wasn’t with the power, he was hitting more situationally, which was probably more productive. I don’t think he will ride the pine throughout. Though I think he will be on a short leash. When you have so many who are not producing, it just seems over the top to pile on one player.
Hopefully, the next series doesn’t take all 7 games. (Provided the Yankees win).
The homer was great for Grandy but the way he stayed on the breaking ball for his first hit was a great sign…..he looked like someone who had been hitting blindfolded that had the blindfold taken off those last couple of ABs….hopefully it carries over

Yeah, let’s put the Yanks in the best position to fall 0-2 or 0-3 with a kid who wasn’t good enough to get a start let alone an inning before the 8th in the ALDS), wait until Game 4 to have the ace start , possibly make him come in with the team down 0-3 or 1-2, make him pitch on short rest (if the Yanks even get to a Game 7 which is no guarantee), and give the #2 starter one start.
The only good thing about your rotation is Kuroda is available to start Game 7 in case Sabathia can’t, but again, what if there is no Game 7?)
‘Glad you’re not the Yanks manager.
Kuroda can’t pitch on short rest? Since when? This is the postseason. He got his extra rest, time to pitch when needed. He’ll have all the rest he needs if the Yanks win it in five which isn’t impossible if they beat Verlander.
No Nova or Phelps.
They are not piling on Arod, he is the one that has a high quality backup option.
Anyone know Kuroda’s numbers on 3 days rest? If there is some success there you have to consider it. Otherwise I go with phelps.
Phelps pitched well vs Detroit, but no start, 4 games, 5 innings, 1.80 ERA.
If we win game 1, maybe we see Phelps in game 2. Otherwise, will be Kuroda on short rest
Arod is held to a higher standard because of his past performance and because he is so highly paid. Also, except for one year, he has done poorly in the post season. Is it fair that we are piling on Arod? As long as we are buying the tickets is sure is.

Perhaps
Phelps up to 120 IP’s in 2012. Give him the ball in Game 2 and hopefully he adds about 7 more good ones. D-rob for 1. Soriano for 1.
Pettitte’s game is a huge one. You don’t want to be down 1 game and lose a 2nd game at home because your starter is not stretched out.

————-
Kuroda’s the #2, he MUST start Game 2 on short rest.
Giving Nova or Phelps Game 2 is like ringing the dinner bell for the Tigers.
Kuroda in Games 2 and 6 gives the Yanks an equal or better matchup in EVERY game as Pettitte can go toe to toe with Fister, Sabathia with Verlander. Kuroda is better than Sanchez and Hughes could be better than Scherzer because Scherzer is hurting.
don’t know how effective Kuroda on short rest will be; this is the key;
if he pitches poorly on short, what’s the point?
Not sure having your 1st 2 starters going on 3 days rest is a formula for success. It’s a long series.
Kuroda rest:
I Split W L W-L% ERA G GS GF CG SHO SV IP H R ER HR BB IBB SO HBP BK WP BF WHIP SO/9 SO/BB

He has pitched only 1 relief appearance on 3 days rest, never a start. His ERA improves as his rest improves. 3.53 -> 3.32 -> 3.07
We’re the last team to repeat as Champions, so it’s imperative that the Cardinals lose.

This is exactly right. The Yanks don’t have much flexibility in the outfield, but Chavez is a solid backup player who is also a lefty.
Alex is not seeing the ball well against righties. I hope that changes against Detroit.

I don’t friggin’ believe what I’m reading from you people.
You basically want a kid who has never made a postseason start, has never made a start in a game as big as this one, and wasn’t good enough to make the ALDS rotation to start Game 2 at home after a win or loss (especially after a loss) over the #2 and give that #2 only one start in the series.
You’re all nuts and I hope Girardi doesn’t take the advice of some of you.
Ever think Kuroda could be on a pitch count? Maybe the Yanks hit Sanchez so hard Kuroda could not only be taken out after 5 IP but before his pitch limit.
If Kuroda couldn’t start Game 2, Derek Lowe (that’s right) should get the ball. Veteran warrior who’s been to this dance before. Groundball pitcher. If he blows then you bring in Nova or Phelps. I think Lowe would be more likely to give five good innings than Phelps. This is the Tigers with Cabrera and Fielder we’re talking about here, not whatever two Os you think are the most dangerous hitters as I can’t decide who the other one is besides Jones.
Kuroda had a tough September. Wasn’t he given extra rest before his last start because the Yanks think his arm is tired? He pitched well in his last start which will only support that contention. I don’t see the Yanks starting him on short rest.
Alex is not seeing the ball well against righties. I hope that changes against Detroit.
——————————————————–
Not an easy matchup for A-Rod right now. Detroit goes all rightys and they are pretty much all really good. I feel like Alex could hit Fister and Sanchez. Scherzer and Verlander would be rough (but that’s for the whole team too, not just Alex).
Those numbers tell me let Kuroda have game 3. Phelps has earned it. With the tigers having all righty’s you can carry Nova and have him serve as long man. Obviously it’s not ideal but it gives them the best chance IMO.
If the normal Yankees offense was here, I’d have no problem throwing Phelps at home against Anibal Sanchez
If they are going to continue with this trend where they need an extraordinary effort from their starter to not lose the game, then they are in trouble anyway.
Just got back with the victory I promised.
A-Rod has hit Verlander. Had a least 1 (maybe 2) HRs off him this year.
A-Rod vs. Verlander is like 8-30 with 3 HRs
He’s awful against all the other DET starters tho
The BINDER is on our side so don’t stress about these decisions. It could go either way but I like our chances of it going the right way. Girardi is the best manager in the history of mankind.

Nick in SF,
It’s going to be a split which kind of upsets me because I was hoping to maybe steal your lunch. The thought of your gambling ways did cross my mind earlier this evening when walking my dog (no relation to the forthcoming punchline). So when I thought of you I thought “The (censored) knows to only put money down on a good bet”. I think you’re a natural but… NC is still a long shot for me because the polls don’t calculate ground game (primary determinant of GOTV – get out the vote operations). If you follow his campaign’s ground game and get text messages and updates and can donate money by pressing reply on your cell phone texting and have been called multiple times at all hours of the day from people residing in area codes from Indiana to Oregon. So the numbers in swing states are going to underestimate the actual votes tallied. When the larger party is mobilized and organized (by the organizer), it wins.
What I’m trying to say is, expect turnout in NC in 2012 to exceed turnout in NC in 2008. Four additional years have been invested building the phone networks, email lists etc. So R-money will have to outperform McCain in NC. Not sure how the Mormon thing plays in the Bible Belt aka Gingrich turf.

Mick, how was the game? You feel 2009 in the air? Did you forget this is the YS with a caviar bar and pedicure parlor?
Girardi is a legend for removing the veil of invincibility from A-Rod and made him realize he is a roll player now and his contract means nothing.
I was 100 percent for benching A-Rod for today’s game and I’m 100 percent for bringing him back against Detroit – even though we’re facing four righties. A new day, a new dawn. Chavez had his chance tonight and didn’t take it. If he had, it would be a different story.
Obviously, we’re at a huge disadvantage with the ACLS starting tomorrow, but, to be honest, I’m just happy to be there. I make the Tigers fairly heavy favorites but it will be nice to be the underdog for a change.
How the players will get themselves up for tomorrow night I have no idea. How I will get myself up for tomorrow night I don’t know either. All I do know is that our hopes of a 28th Championship are still alive. And, for now, that’s all I can ask for.
Best not to discuss the specifics in this forum.
But it sounds like you’re emotionally preparing yourself for a split.
That’s a good transitional place to be. It could get worse.
girardi is now the peoples choice…every day he does something new to humiliate arod…

blake, that would be my choice as well-this way the only time you are throwing someone on short rest is CC in a potential 7th game, at which point rest means nothing.
You also get CC away from Verlander.
I could see the 1st 4 games split and it come down to 2 of 3 with the last 2 at Yankee Stadium. I think Andy wins tomorrow, the 2nd game is a complete unknown.
Is Fister pitching game 1 and Scherzer game 2 or is it Sanchez?
Cards coming back. Nats looked really good early but now have Davey eatting Rolaids by the handful.
