Francesa is in disbelief lol.
—————————————————–
Man, I wish I could hear him right now lol. Wasn’t he giving A-Rod pep talks earlier today?
——————
Yes he was and since A-rod is not in the line-up he is surprised to say the least. “A-rod now could play SS better than Nunez” – Mike
my sides hurt lol
“arod could play with his glove on the other hand”
Kristieackert
A=Rod could play a better shortstop with his cap instead of a glove than NUnez — Francesa. Hilarious radio right now
“he could go out there with his Cap and play a better ss than Nunez”
I’m hoping Granderson turns the corner from his terrible offense today since he’s used to playing in Comerica…
Let’s Go Yankees!!!!!
benching A-Rod was his flirting with female fans late in Gm 1
————
BS, I am sure that has absolutely ntohing to do with it. He is sitting because they are saving him from embarassing himself. Everyone knows he can’t catch up to Verlander’s fastball right now. If Arod was hitting in the series and that thing happened with the girls you can guarantee he would be in the lineup.
ESPNNYYankees
Girardi: we’re not panicking, we’re trying to create some runs
The Bronx Bunters!
The only issue I have is Chavez for AROD. He has hit as bat as Alex and Alex has some success of Verlander this year. I feel they ultimately need a productive AROD to win, and they need to see if it is there. Five years as a platoon against lefties?
Arod hasnt played SS for 9 years.
but I agree yankees now are singling out him, it’s personal insult.
drama continues.
Odds against Yankees winning this series have just lengthened from 6-1 to 66-1 after Vegas saw Girardi’s lineup. The binder says no.
A-Rod last 2 at bats were good and he got a hit. And now he’s being punished again?
There is your line-up everybody!
Who’s happy
Who’s upset
‘we are not panicking!”
LOL
Wow, my subs and my lineup except I had Martin 8th where he should be.
The Yankees are NOT singling out ARod.
The guy is in a huge slump and because he put himself
in this position, the team has to find someone else to
produce at the plate.
The only good thing to come out of this ARod slump
is to date he has not taken his lack of offense to 3rd base with him.
@sportsJC16
Could #Yankees be sending a message to Arod & Swisher they are tired of their off field BS (seeking phone #’s & whining about the fans)?
Why does Granderson get a pass over Swish? Gradnerson looks WAY worse in every at bat than Swisher has.
I’m pretty surprised A-Rod isn’t in there. I get that he’s looked bad, but he really has (had) a chance to pick this team up and be a leader. I guess Chavez is in there because he had a REALLY good series in Detroit earlier this year if I recall.
i have to agree i want alex to bust out of it but i see no way he makes contact with a verlander fb today.
chavez has done nothing in the PS so far but he’s good and at least he stands a chance in there.
Bringing back a guy who hasn’t played for six months at leadoff. Desperation.
Playing a liability at shortstop. Stupidity.
Replacing a Hall of Fame player with an 0-11 hitter at third. Nonsensical.
Girardi will be hailed as a genius if they pull this one off tonight.
Or a complete and utter jackass when he has his lunch handed to him.
As bad as Arod has looked recently he might be the better option over Chavez. Chavez hasn’t looked good at all recently and who knows if he can catch up to that heat. I really don’t like the Nunez move. Nix has been hitting recently and considering how dead the bats have been they can’t afford a Nunez error.
Rick
Granderson plays CF.
Taking him out of the line-up will result is several players possibly playing out of position.
Swisher and A-rod got half of the Yankee hits in game 2…
I really don’t get Gardner batting leadoff. He wasn’t able to start in other games because Girardi said that he hasn’t had any at bats. So why do you want him to get the most at bats. He should be batting 9th.
Wow totally called the lineup, though missed on some of the positions. Got the players and the spirit of it though
Peter Botte?@PeterBotte
CASHMAN: “I wouldn’t say it’s radical… or desperate…I’d say it’s necessary…We’re definitely changing things up. We’ve been patient.”
Girardi said the fact that Hughes is a fly ball pitcher played into the decision to play Gardner – and to keep Granderson in the lineup
*****************************************************************
that makes a lot of sense to me. Granderson is needed out there in CF to catch
the fly balls.
Swisher needs to sit. He’s not making any contact.
Gardner can possibly get a base hit by just making contact and beating
the throw to 1st base. Matter of fact, look for Gardner to attempt a bunt at least once
tonight.
Arod will have lots of time to watch Kate in Verlander’s box.
Why does Granderson get a pass over Swish?
————
That outfield is gigantic and they need Granderson’s defense. Swisher was putrid the other night and they want speed out there.

HAHAHAHAHA Stop It!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Patrick
The hit by ARod was off a lefty(Coke)
Verlander is a righty and that kind of pitcher has given ARod trouble of late.
Thank God finally at least 2 of 3 is sitting, we have a chance
Glad to see Chavez in there
Not so glad to see Nunez in there….
Who cares what Swisher thinks. He won’t be back next year and now he is crying about the fans. He can’t hit and his defense killed them. He had enough changes it’s time to try someone else.
Saucy-
Nunez has to be in there because Jeter is unavailable
francesa. lol
very funny
Chavez over Alex is a bad idea. Alex did well against Verlander this year. And Nunez at short is not worth the risk. Ibanez in the field is better than Nunez in the field, so you cannot defend this by saying that Ibanez should not be in the field.
I probably would have seriously considered A-Rod at SS instead of Nunez. I bet the Front Office had something to say about that not happening. But I would take A-Rod at SS EVERY TIME over Nunez. Francesa is going off about it right now…and I agree.
Girardi put a line=up together versus probably the best AL pitcher in order
to manufacture runs, get guys on base with singles/speed and not wait
on the 2 or 3 run HR.
Very smart!
Francesa has just surpassed himself.
ARod is a gold glover.
Nunez shouldn’t even have a glove.
PRICELESS!
I think they’re sending a message that they want to win the game.
Surprised about Gardner leading off, though. I kind of pictured him hitting 9th in his “hey, it’s October 16th and we’re facing Verlander in Game Three of the ALCS, welcome back to the lineup!” game.
I love the speed of our outfield now, but we could also use Manute Bol as Outfield Rover in case someone has to leap high and bring one back into the yard.
I would play Alex over Chavez.
Otherwise, I like the lineup.
Best bench in baseball history tonight.
“If A-Rod just stood there and only caught the ball that came right to him, he’d do better than Nunez” – Mike Francesa

On days like this he’s golden
Gardner should just bunt the ball to Cabrera every at bat. He has a really good chance to reach base with that awful fielder at 3rd base. It’s amazing that the Tigers terrible defense hasn’t cost them in this series. Gardner and Ichiro have to test Cabrera.
RSM October 16th, 2012 at 5:40 pm
I would play Alex over Chavez.
Otherwise, I like the lineup.
———————————————————————-
Damned if you do and damned if you don’t
ARod’s numbers versus a righty are so poor, Girardi really does not have a choice.
Yankees win the game today and who knows, Girardi might run out the same line-up
again tomorrow with C.C. on the mound.
Wiat, so you guys really think that “blackhole” Arod is worse than Chavez right now? What have you seen in teh last 10 games to make you think that? Chavez can at least put a bat on the ball.
I hope Nunez fields a flawless SS and gets 3 hits. And I hope Chavez hits a bomb, Gardner steals 3 bases and scores the winning run. Then I can call into Francessca and rub it in his face
Francesa is so out of control that it means Chavez is going to have a good night so he has to say “nevermind” tomorrow.
JonS
Arod’s stats are as follows: 0-18, 12 K’s vs RHP
That is why the team has to insert Chavy into the line-up
and take the risk
Francesca is an idiot, at least for baseball.
No one really watching Arod without bias vs rhp the past month could want him in the lineup, let alone at SS.
I am worried about Nunez’s defense, but Hughes is a flyball pitcher anyways

It will be on youtube before the night is over.
It will be even better if Chavez hits a homer off of Al Alburquerque.
Joelsherman1 Cashman said A-Rod benching is strictly how bad has looked v RHP. Not anything else #Yankees
Nunez has made 18 errors in 219 chances at shortstop in 2011 and 2012, and 2 errors in 3 chances at 2B, and 2 errors in 20 chances at 3B this year. Jesus Christ.
win or lose tonight, i hope to see both ARod and Swish on the bench, cheering for
the team and encouraging the team to do well and be engaged in the game
The only thing I do agree with Francesa on is that ARod should be in there to either succeed or fail. It should be on him. That’s why we pay him $30 million a year. He shouldn’t be allowed to hide on the bench in the biggest game of the year.
Of course we’re panicking and I’m glad to see the changes.
Cashman, Girardi and the organization are trying to run Arod out of town. No question they want him gone. This is basically saying we gave you all of that money you signed that contract under false terms now you can’t play like an all star….goodbye.

That was the old Nunez
Today we have the new & improved Nunez. The guy that was demoted to AAA
and forced to work on his defense!
I hope Granderson, Gardner and Ichiro catch at least 15 fly balls tonight.
That’s 5 IP right there.
The remainder can be K’s and ground balls to Cano or Chavez or Tex
Well, the game needs to be played, I guess. I believe the Yankees will get it done tonight and win. Time will tell. I believe in Girardi, no matter how maddening he can be sometimes. He doesn’t have many options given recent performances, so why the hell not try something new. I’m all for it.
Cashman, not Girardi answering line-up questions.
Why is swisher sitting and not Grandy? Because they can’t bench everyone.
Arod has struggled against righties all yr. he’s been atrocious vs them since he hurt his hand. And he’s struck out 75% of his ABs vs them in the playoffs. Some of you think he’s going to suddenly hit a 95+ FB?
Looking at this line up makes me think the objective is small ball. Gardner, Ichiro, Nunez are able to run and possibly bunt or steal bases.
I’m not sure why Chavez over Alex, as Chavez hasn’t been hitting either, but maybe his defense is a little better for getting to balls. It must be the RHP match up.
Alex as a pinch hitter doesn’t thrill me either.
Cashman, Girardi and the organization are trying to run Arod out of town. No question they want him gone. This is basically saying we gave you all of that money you signed that contract under false terms now you can’t play like an all star….goodbye.
————————————————————————————————————-
WRONG!
Arod has played his way onto the bench!
@Buster_ESPN: Brian Cashman said the fact that Phil Hughes–flyball pitcher– is going tonight was a factor in the decision to start Gardner over Swisher.
@Buster_ESPN: And while Gardner hasn’t started a ML game since April 17, I think the Yankees’ mindset is: Hey, he can’t be any worse than what we’ve seen.
This is their best chance to win tonight.
@bheyman99: Besides this 4 for 26 postseason, Swisher had struck out 20 times in 55 career regular-season at-bats vs. Verlander, had hit .200 with 3 HR.

+++++++++++
Girardi makes up the lineup, how exactly is Alex hiding on the bench when he is put there by his manager? Or do you know that Alex requested to be benched?
I seriously doubt this is what ARod desires. This is Girardi crapping his pants over having to face the media asking him why would you bat Alex.
Give Nunez a chance instead of just writing him off.
His offensive production can’t be any worse than what we’ve gotten thus far from a bulk of the team.
Really like that lineup.
3 guys in a row that can steal a base.
I think that’s important.
Francesca making this about infield defense. It’s not.
It’s about manufacturing runs – small ball.
Could also be that the organization had two lineups, waited to see which catcher Detroit was starting, and went with the base-stealing lineup.
They are going for offense early. They need to score off Verlander in the first 2-3 innings before he settles in. This gives them a chance.
If they somehow take the lead early, I would bet Girardi subs Nix for Nunez to shore up the defense.
Chavez already is a better defensive third baseman than ARod, who has limited mobility but catches everything he reaches.
I like this lineup. It is the best the team can do given the circumstances.
Also leaves Arod as PH vs Smyly/Coke.
Hughes has to pitch a gem, then cc.
I’d go with ichiro,granderson,swisher,chavez,nix,cano,tex,martin,ibanez.
Nunez against rh pitching, with his defense is ugly.
He should not be playing against righties.
Terrible move.
WTP, i’d rather Nix than Nunez.
Girardi will field far tougher questions for benching ARod rather than playing him. It’s a brave move, again, but one that I believe is foolhardy.
Yes, ARod has looked horrid against righties this year, but he has had success against Verlander this year. He should be in the lineup ahead of Chavez.
but i can deal with this line-up.
Francesca is so off base – he’s missing the point.
Arod is not performing. He hit HRs off Verlander BEFORE the broken hand!!!!!
Arod has been beaten by 91mph.
Think he’s going to meet and greet one at 98???
SS Defensive Rankings:
Nix > ARod > Jeter with broken ankle > Doug Fister’s wrist > Nunez
There is no smaller Small Ball than a weak K, so I’d say we’re moving away from Small Ball and towards Rock ‘em Sock ‘em baseball. Woo hoo!
Holy smokes….I am shocked. I like the move, but long term, this has implications for Arod. Are they trying to push him out? No way he stays on the bench. He would take a trade to anywhere instead.
I think the Yankees are really trying to distance arod from the team….
The way Francesca is describing it, Nunez has no arms.
Arod’s 2 HR’s off verlander were in another lifetime.
Girardi’s turned into Billy Martin.
I love it….Arod will be gone next year, if not sooner, company decision.
He would take a trade to anywhere instead.
Dangerous game of chicken. I’m spiteful enough that I would sit awhile and watch them sweat having to write checks.
Heres GirARDI on arod

He’s harping on Nunez…inconsequential, he’s looking to spark this team.
I hope Arod is getting message. Yanks don’t want his steroid ravaged body. Retire and make it easy on everyone.
Locke,
That was funny.
There were times in game 5 vs the O’s where Alex could have pinch hit. And they still left in Chavez. So if Chavez has 3ks in his first 3 at bats. Joe will probably pinch hit Nix
He’s making this a battle of Nunez vs Arod at SS.
That’s crazy….Arod can’t hit, Nunez might.
Francesa – This is organizational. A-rod has played himself to the bench but there is a lot more here than meets the eye.
Mike apoplectic….but that’s his job….very shortsided, losing credibility.

They gladly accepted it in 09.
A-Rod is a narc of the highest order. He isn’t going to give back any money or approve a trade unless it is to a glamor destination like LA or Miami. Both LA teams probably have no money left to absorb even half of his his deal and the Marlins are rebuilding.
A-Rod is stuck here, so for the Yanks to try and alienate him is digging their own grave.
Arod can pull a Reggie and pinch hit for Chavez if needed.
Billy benched Reggie against the Royals and he won the game as a PH.
Arod will beg to be traded b/c the Yanks won’t play him. They will pay him but not play him.
He wants a record remember….the will trade him and pay 1/2 -3/4 of his salary if nec.
I’ve had enough of francesa, he’s repeating himself ….
Arod will be gone next year?
I don’t see any club will be as dumb as yankees to take him.
Arod to the Marlins to boost attendance makes sense.
The Yanks could probably trade Alex if they ate 80% or more of his contract …. But Im not sure how that helps them
It could mean a lot of off season activity.
A-rod just hasn’t been the same since coming back from the wrist injury. We all know how bad he’s looked in the playoffs but take a closer look at his numbers in the regular season after returning from the DL
.261/.341/.369
His second worst month was in April where he hit .244/.354/.415 .. even in his second worst month of the season the difference in SLG is stark. The wrist injury has pretty clearly sapped A-rod of his power. I still think he can be a decent player going forward but right now he is not productive at all.
It doesn’t matter that he’s 4 for 7 with 2 HR off Verlander this year, those games took place before he got hurt.
mick October 16th, 2012 at 6:19 pm

The same Marlin team that dumped players during the deadline.
A-rod is basically unmovable at this point unless the Yanks are willing to eat $100 milliion in payroll
Arod has always been the scapegoat for our Yankees troubles. I root for the laundry but with that being said Arod benching is asinine. Cano 0/26 is flying under the radar. The lohud writers got what they wanted but just remember if the Yankees now lose this series you can’t use the blame Arod card because he didn’t get the chance at least in the biggest game of the year. I give it by the 4th inning before the buckering starts. Lets go Yankees
Gritner should bunt towards that chubby mvp first ab.
So would Arod ride the bench just for the money? I mean if you won’t play him here, when would you play him?
don’t like the arod move.

Agree.. I have never been an arod fan but the move is puzzling. Also if you are a rod aren’t u bothered that you are the bench because you’re not hitting but the “greatest second baseman ever” is the having the worst post season in history and is still out there?
hello, I don’t post much (almost never) but i just thought I’d add to this topic. I see most people on here don’t like Nunez playing (whether it be for defensive or offensive purposes) but I remember last year when Jeter went down Nunez stepped it up big and was very productive. Maybe this might also be the case this time around.

He will still be seen as the scapegoat. “If Alex hit we wouldn’t be in this position”
Arod isn’t the scapegoat, he is the goat. The guy has never been worth 1/2 his salary/contract. Ibanez had more memorable Yankee moments in 2 games than Arod has in his Yankee career. He has never been the “straw that stirs the drink”. And I thought it was impossible for anyone to top the Dave Winfield postseason fiasco.
I mean if we are benching super stars for back-ups could we bench cano?
Love the added speed, but how badly did you overestimate your talent that you are now forced to bench both Alex and Swish? And you are talking again about making adjustments that you didn’t feel were necessary in the regular season. Really? That is all I will say. Just win, baby.
Is a rod. A Yankee next April… Not so sure… I see a bad contract for bad contracts kinda trade coming
Let’s see, Cano isn’t hitting, Granderson isn’t hitting, Swisher isn’t hitting, Chavez isn’t hitting, Martin isn’t hitting. So while Alex is doing poorly, benching him isn’t going to answer the issue of the Yankee TEAM not hitting.
I get it, he has not been hitting since coming back, maybe it’s due to his weeks off, but prior to his having his hand broken (which last I checked wasn’t something that was his body breaking down) he was hitting the ball well, even if the power wasn’t impressive.
I like Swisher being benched, but if the Yankees benched everyone who is doing as poorly at the plate as Alex, they would have to send out the AAA team as all of them are doing poorly at the plate.
This team had gone through this earlier this season. Couldn’t hit a lick, from around the time they got swept by the A’s.
It isn’t a brave move by Girardi. It is scapegoating Alex to make it seem like he is doing a tough move. Why not bench Granderson? He hasn’t been benched and has looked even worse than ARod at the plate.
Have you seen that Det OF, it’s huge, so Gardner Grandy Ichiro is your best OF.
Chavez for Arod has happened before…
Why are people talking about moving ARod?
Its not even remotely possible. He is a bum with a gargantuan contract.
Who would want that? What possible value does he bring to any team at $30M/year?
Even if we ate 50% of what he is owed, what does he bring to any team at even $15M a year?
NOTHING. That’s what ARod is now: NOTHING.

hmm, don’t agree at all.
If you employer gives you a huge raise, will u reject it or accept it? Money is money, no one forced Yankees sign that contract. Arod has every right to take every penny, based on the contract. It’s dumb on Yankee part, smart on Arod&Co, business wise.
