Get used to the name: Shohei Otani

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Oct 21, 2012 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

This isn’t exactly Yu Darvish 2.0, but young Japanese pitcher Shohei Otani has decided to come to the United States. He’s a high school kid, so Otani’s not going to do what Darvish did and jump to the top of a contending team’s rotation. But he’s apparently very good with a huge fastball. Here’s the brief Associated Press story about his decision to leave Japan.

TOKYO (AP) — Japanese high school pitcher Shohei Otani says he will pursue a career in Major League Baseball instead of turning professional in Japan.

Otani, a 6-foot-4 right-hander who has thrown a fastball between 99 and 100 mph, has been scouted by several major league teams including the Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox.

The 18-year-old Otani said “I think I will start in the minor leagues but I want to challenge in the majors. It’s been my dream since entering high school.”

Otani was expected to go in the first round of Thursday’s amateur draft in Japan.

If he signs with a major league team, Otani would become the first potential top draft pick to make the direct jump from a Japanese high school to the U.S.

Kyuji Fujikawa headed to MLB, represented by Arn Tellem/Don Nomura @fukudasun @nikkansportscom ????????????????? http://www.nikkansports.com/ba.....30459.html

I posted about Fujikawa sometime during the year. Very good reliever, may be affordable as a japanese free agent. Uehara was a great pickup by the O’s & Rangers, he could be a cost effective replacement for Soriano.

Ok Chad, give us the obligatory salary implications.
I know there’s no posting fee. What’s he gonna go for? And what will the impact be for the yanks. I’m pissed were missing out on the Japanese , Cuban international market this past year…

  3. Unnamedsource October 21st, 2012 at 5:59 pm

Here is my unofficial list of 31 players from the Yankees organization who would appear to qualify for minor league free agency within the next month:

First, the pitchers. There are 19 of them. Ramon Ortiz, John Maine, Juan Cedeno, Mike O’Conner, Manny Delcarmen, Kelvin Perez, Jon Meloan, Francisco Rondon, Jason Bulger, Kevin Whelan, Lee Hyde, Josh Romanski, Ronny Marte, Jairo Heredia, Diego Moreno, Grant Duff, Tim Norton, Joel De La Cruz, Kelvin Castro

Second, the catchers. There are 4 of them. Gustavo Molina, Jose Gil, Craig Tatum, Francisco Arcia

Third, the infielders. There are 8 of them. Kevin Russo, Doug Bernier, Ramiro Pena, Walter Ibarra, Jose Mojica, Cody Johnson, Jose Pirela, Jose Toussen

Last, the outfielders. There are 3 of them. Cole Garner, Abraham Almonte, Billy Hart

Of course, the list could change due to intervening transactions between now and the time Matt Eddy of Baseball America gets the official list from the Commissioner in a few weeks. I have not included on my unofficial list free agencies that Eddy has already announced.

Ok Chad, give us the obligatory salary implications.
I know there’s no posting fee. What’s he gonna go for?

He is a prospect, he will be signed under the IFA rules so just a signing bonus + normal minor league contract. Most teams have only a million or so left to spend, except maybe the Rangers as I’m not sure what they’ve spent and they may have spent small in anticipation of Otani.

The cost will be between 1-5 million signing bonus only. Will not get a major league deal.

  5. Jerkface October 21st, 2012 at 6:03 pm

The impact for the Yankees if they acquired him would be getting a player worth a top 15 draft pick for nothing but money.

  6. Trigeminal Neuralgia Yank October 21st, 2012 at 6:09 pm

    Thanks jerk.
Sounds like a no brainer, won’t impact their precious salary cap. Tell cashman we said its ok

  7. Jerkface October 21st, 2012 at 6:10 pm

The only negative impact on the Yankees is that if they sign him they will have to go ‘over slot’ and depending on by how much they will be limited to contracts 250k or under next season. Which should be fine, signing guys for that amount is one of the Yankees strengths in IFA.

  8. G. Love October 21st, 2012 at 6:11 pm

Brian Cashman – “He’s from Japan? Forget it! I don’t want another Kei Igawa on my hands! Get me Freddy Garcia on line 1 & Paul Byrd on line 2 stat! Paul Byrd retired? I wonder what Marlon Byrd is doing? Hmmm….I really wonder what that bi-polar extortionist is doing now. Look, the leaves are turning!”

  9. blake October 21st, 2012 at 6:13 pm

    Sign him.

  10. fantasygame101 October 21st, 2012 at 6:14 pm

if it is a minor league deal then just money. Then the pitching coaches will probably mess him up that he will need surgery in a yr.

  11. blake October 21st, 2012 at 6:15 pm

I’m guessing he will sign for 5 or 6 million? Somebody ( hopefully the yanks) will go over the. 2.9 million

  12. Jerkface October 21st, 2012 at 6:17 pm

I’m revising my earlier estimate of him signing for around ~5 million to under 3. I compared him with pitchers signing prior to the limit. I don’t think teams will really go too far over the limit to sign him. Infact, teams like the Dodgers & Rangers may try to just allocate their budget under the limit which would be around ~1.2 mil.

  13. blake October 21st, 2012 at 6:18 pm

“Brian Cashman – “He’s from Japan? Forget it! I don’t want another Kei Igawa on my hands! Get me Freddy Garcia on line 1 & Paul Byrd on line 2 stat! Paul Byrd retired?”

Also get me theo on the line so I can trade all our prospects for that elusive #2!!!

  14. blake October 21st, 2012 at 6:20 pm

    JF,

I guess that’s the thing though when everybody offers close to the same money…..then it just becomes the players choice….if they really want him teu may have to break the rules

  15. Jerkface October 21st, 2012 at 6:20 pm

if they really want him teu may have to break the rules

Well they definitely have to. The Yankees only have 250k to spend, unlike LA & TEX. That may play to the Yankees advantage if they are willing to go over.

“Well they definitely have to. The Yankees only have 250k to spend, unlike LA & TEX. That may play to the Yankees advantage if they are willing to go over.”

  17. theREALkevin October 21st, 2012 at 6:25 pm

lol @ even Kevin Long’s job not being in jeopardy, where the hell is accountability? One of the worst offensive team performances in playoff history and everyone is safe. What a joke.

    Good evening,

YF, if you are still around. Very wise words ;) RE: throne.

    JS,

I don’t believe they are, and I don’t care one bit if they have a different opinion. They are entitled to it, and I respect that. But there are better ways to make a point.

    About Otani,

I hope they sign him, but I doubt that they go that route if that means getting penalized the next year. I would guess that it would depend on what’s available next season.

    G Love,

    Scrap heap, here we come!

  19. blake October 21st, 2012 at 6:28 pm

Cashman is probably trying to talk Ben Sheets out of retirement as we speak

  20. luis October 21st, 2012 at 6:30 pm

To be fair, this isn’t on the coaches as much as it is on the players. Or the GM that built that roster. Of course, he is on cover your butt mode.

They can’t sign any player for over 250k the next cycle (year).

And they have to pay 100% tax on any amount over their limit this year.

  22. luis October 21st, 2012 at 6:32 pm

JAP and YF, I will keep you updated on the progress of the baby bombers down here.

    YankeeTrader,

I saw him play last year for a little while, good soft hands and frames the pitches relatively well. His swing still has a few holes though

  23. jacksquat October 21st, 2012 at 6:32 pm

So if the Yanks have 250k left under the limit for this year, and they paid Otani a 3.25 mil bonus, they would have to pay 3 mil in penalty taxes, so really 6.25 mil for Otani.

  27. Bret The Hitman October 21st, 2012 at 6:37 pm

Because if Cashman fires Kevin Long it makes the guy who hired him look flawed too. And we all know how quick Cashman is to own up to mistakes. He would never downplay the fault lines underneath this team. He would never suggest that everything is smooth sailing when a Tsunami is raging ahead.

  28. austinmac October 21st, 2012 at 6:38 pm

    Luis,

You are on target with Cashman’s act is to as cover his rear. No changes will occur because no mistakes were made. We will add valuable older players on the cheap like Ibanez. Look at his playoff success. Older and cheaper are the watchwords.

  30. NYY_Girl_Penny October 21st, 2012 at 6:42 pm

Giants right-hander Tim Lincecum will be available in trade and it will be interesting to see what kind of market develops for him. The Giants say his problems were strictly mechanical, but other teams wonder why his fastball dipped from around 96 mph to 92 mph for most of the season. The 28-year-old is due $22MM in the final year of his deal.

    hmm…

    I agree, just explaining it.

I don’t really expect Hal to approve anything like this when he is hell bent on getting under the luxury tax cap. It seems like he wants to cut costs but expect the same performance/income. I think it may bite him in the ass. Then again maybe he is setting things up to sell the team.

  32. luis October 21st, 2012 at 6:46 pm

    Mac,

Unfortunately it seems to be the case. G Love proposed a very smart way to deal both with the present issues and still have a comprehensive and coherent long term strategy. But doing something along those lines would be recognizing how flawed the current policy is. Cashman is way too arrogant to correct the course if that means, showing he was wrong all along.

  33. austinmac October 21st, 2012 at 6:48 pm

I like GLove’s plan. It’s biggest drawback is it a departure from Cashman’s vision. We can’t have that.

Exactly – Yanks will add older and cheaper options such as Kuroda and Pettitte – like last year – and then Reed Johnson and Jeff Keppinger for the bench – - – -

  35. luis October 21st, 2012 at 6:49 pm

    JS,

What they are doing goes against a sale of the club. If revenues are down, the prize of the team will go down as well.

  36. Bret The Hitman October 21st, 2012 at 6:50 pm

I like Keppinger. Unlike Chavez he will stay on the field and neutralize Alex Rodriguez.

They should but I think Cash would rather spread the money around instead of putting it all on one player. We’ll see months from now when he signs with someone else. Cash will get asked about it and say “Passing on him had noting to do with his ability. Obviously the *fill in team name here* signed a high end talent in International Free Agency but I felt it was a better allocation of resources to acquire multiple players instead of one. We believe it reinforces the strength of our minor league system and provides numerous options”

Bret The Hitman October 21st, 2012 at 2:06 pm
Montero had a .685 OPS and hit mostly as a DH

There’s not one person in the front office regretting that move and rightly so.

    ~

I would hazard a guess that not one person in the front office feels the trade can be properly evaluated, at this point in time, especially considering….
    - MP had surgery and hasn’t even pitched for the Yanks yet
    - JM just completed his first big league season w/zero offensive help around him

    I’m still hoping for a win-win…
    - that MP heals fast and well and gets back to his “diabolical” self
    - that JM grows into the player most thought he could be (and that he gets some help!)

  40. austinmac October 21st, 2012 at 6:52 pm

Hal’s budget cuts may not be only in roster payroll. I’ve seen nothing to suggest any additional attention to other player development areas.

Last year’s salaries increased in the MLB 4.4 %. We’ll bring that down next year and thereafter.

    Stone,

One thing you are right… It is still to early to judge what they do this OS… I hope the make the right moves… Unfortunately I have zero faith in them… They appear in denial… There isn’t a worst blind person than those that choose not to see what is right in front of them… When and if I see a better MiLB coaching staff, that they try to address the obvious offensive problems this team has, then I will get behind this managing group again… Getting the talent is half the battle, the other one is making sure that that talent develops accordingly… Oppenheimer has done a very good job in the draft, only to see it squandered afterwards.

That is fair – especially what has been said over the past week from Yankees brass. I just do not put much talk with what Cashman, Levine and others say public – - – -

Regarding development of young prospects – I completely agree and have been frustrated to some extent. I still do not what to make of the Billy Connors “reassignment” and whether this means further changes. I am encouraged about Phelps though – and do like that they are pushing Adams and Heathcott in AZFL. Plus, I hope Austin just keeps on hitting – b/c that is one thing I do not think the development staff can *(&* up (hopefully).

They could afford to sign the entire top 20. That list had like 10 short stops, can’t get 1? List also had 4 pitchers. None with the Yankees. There is also more of an unknown quality with latin IFA’s due to age concerns, the fact you’re signing them at 16 so they won’t even be in the system for 2 seasons, the difficulty of scouting all these kids, & the fact that players get in with a manager or the middle men and are steered towards certain teams. Not to mention the corruption!

Otani is a known quantity that has pitched on TV in a first world nation who is ready to join Charleston next season.

And it is a fact the Yankees have not been able to seal the deal on high profile players.

    Nick,

More than citing statistics it is the way and the moment it is displayed… While I wouldn’t call that trolling, I would say that first there are better ways to make a point. Second, context… Lately, it seems that at the first mention of you know who, there comes an unwarranted swipe. The fact that one of those posters only shows up to do that, reinforces the notion. So in conclusion, I don’t think for one moment that they are trolls or that posting statistics to prove a point is trolling either. But only showing up to take a swipe at certain posters could be construed as trolling. Especially after an innocuous comment from Odds. As I said in a previous post, I don’t think is trolling but idiotic and disruptive to the flow of the conversation. Instead of talking of the issue at hand, the conversation got diverted without motive. Not to mention that that certain poster tone was kind of dismissive. And I am not talking about Bret.

Instead of talking of the issue at hand, the conversation got diverted without motive. Not to mention that that certain poster tone was kind of dismissive. And I am not talking about Bret.

Me? I think I only commented after J.A.P. called people trolls…

  68. luis October 21st, 2012 at 7:50 pm

    Tom,

I want you to find one post where I said that no believing in Montero being the rookie of the year was trolling and you may have a point. I don’t think you will find one. And I will be waiting for it. If you don’t find one, I hope that you will correct the record as result.

  69. tomingeorgia October 21st, 2012 at 7:50 pm

    luis,
JAP is one of the most literate and savvy posters here, and you are, too. But you both said that. I didn’t think it was a bad deal, but it hasn’t worked out for anybody, yet. Wait and see, is what I said.

  70. Tar October 21st, 2012 at 7:51 pm

“it pains me to take issue with anything you say after the pain of yesterday’s football results,”

    You mean 21-3 Stanford?

    :D

I disagree with his definition of trolls in this case. But lets be real, Mr. Prufock could post anything and you would analyze it with a micron microscope. Kind of beneath you my good man.

    Tom

We all have posted things that could if brought back up would or could seem wrong. Does not mean it was necessary or called for.

  71. luis October 21st, 2012 at 7:52 pm

No JS… What you posted was perfectly reasonable… Excuse me if you felt that I was referring to you… No I was talking about Pat M

  72. Nick in SF October 21st, 2012 at 7:55 pm

luis, are they trolls or are they not trolls? If not, isn’t it out of line to call them that?

You’re one of the folks who wants fewer personal insults on here, right?

Tar, I was referring to multiple games in which evil triumphed over good, or at least the better.

“But lets be real, Mr. Prufock could post anything and you would analyze it with a micron microscope.”</i.

Not really. I agree with some of the things that Mr. Prufrock says and have over the years. But really, what's your point in questioning me and me only in this instance?

  73. Nick in SF October 21st, 2012 at 7:56 pm

oops, bad use of italics. I’ll take all the blame for that.

  74. jacksquat October 21st, 2012 at 7:58 pm

Although I know I have bought up the issue of Montero and JAP before, but today just commented on the troll thing.

I didn’t really see any bad comments today.

JAP should consider that he brings up Montero quite often and has a rather extreme opinion of the trade, so he may bring some of this on himself, as far as people perhaps offering somewhat extreme views on the other side.

  75. Nick in SF October 21st, 2012 at 8:00 pm

Let me put it this way, Tar: do you think it’s beneath Mr. Prufrock to be referring to regulars on here — Pat M., Bret the Hitman, me, and no doubt others — as trolls?

    If not, why not?

  76. luis October 21st, 2012 at 8:01 pm

    Nick,

Read my post… There is your answer…

  77. yankeefeminista October 21st, 2012 at 8:01 pm

JF, we did sign an IFA shortstop Yancarlos Baez signed for $650K.

  78. tomingeorgia October 21st, 2012 at 8:04 pm

    luis,
Won;t even look, because you probably didn’t say that but, damn, that was the motif for and against the trade. Anitis were/not trolling the pros. All I’m saying.

  79. Carlo October 21st, 2012 at 8:05 pm

Given the red sox trade managers and executives for players annually, it got me to thinking. Can we spin cashman for a 36 year old minor league organizational player?

  80. luis October 21st, 2012 at 8:07 pm

    Tom,

I won’t get on the pros and cons of the trade again… What’s done is done… I do understand you position… But I don’t think taking a swipe at me or JAP would help things, that’s all I am saying.

I do consider you a very esteemed poster, I hope we can keep it that way.

  81. Tar October 21st, 2012 at 8:11 pm

“But really, what’s your point in questioning me and me only in this instance?”

Good question… But I will point out I also just questioned Tom. Anyway I would say it’s because I hold you both to a higher standard.

Also I believe He posted that many hours ago, the statue of post limitations has made it such that responding in such a negative way, when he is not even here ( at least i don’t think he is), is more of a negative reflection on you. Like I said beneath you. But then again if you felt personally slighted I guess do understand responding such as you did.

As for the trolls remark I already said I disagree. But if I think on it some more, I might start thinking about all the times Bret actually did just that.

  82. Shame Spencer October 21st, 2012 at 8:14 pm

  85. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 21st, 2012 at 8:19 pm

Just popping in to say hi and show everyone the latest prediction points chart. Remember that DLS was 1 point for correct team and 3 points for correct team and games to win; CLS was 3 and 5 respectively. WS will be 5 and 10 respectivey. So if you see that I made any mistake in points (a miracle if I didn’t) please let me know.

Haven’t gotten to read any posts yet. Today we had the kind of family reunion where there are people there you’ve never seen before. And we have a big Italian family. I was on the committee so it’s been a ton of work but it was wonderful. Our first (with that many family members going up the family tree.) We had one that just dealt with my dad’s 8 brothers and sisters and their kids. But this went up a level. So it was my dad’s father’s brothers and sisters and their families. Don’t mean to bore you.

Anyway, here’s the point chart. WS predictions will be taken as soon as we know who’s in the WS. It’s not quite as exciting of course as when the Yanks are in it, but I am going to see it through because someone here deserves wonderful Ritter Sports Bars. :) I have a cousin who is a big Yankee fan and he came up to me and said “Who the heck was that team that played the Tigers in the ALCS?”

    Oh well.

    Oh yeah. GO GINTS!!!!!

    POSTSEASON POINTS

  86. Nick in SF October 21st, 2012 at 8:19 pm

luis, I read your post, you said it’s not trolling. Good, we agree on that.

You and I have discussed the trade many times and I think I made it clear that I didn’t like it at the time and, had I been given a vote on it (without being given any inside information or opinions) I would have voted against it.

That said, can we agree that:

    1) Supporting the trade does not make someone a troll.

    2) Citing Montero’s results in Seattle in defense of the trade does not make someone a troll.

    Tar,

You hold tomingeorgia and me to higher standards than Mr. Prufrock? Why would you hold him in such low esteem?

Regarding the statute [as per Seinfeld, there is no statue of limitations] of post limitations, nice try, but it was there when I refreshed the ‘Hud a little while ago. It’s not like I was quoting something from weeks or months ago, a la randy.

And no, I didn’t feel personally insulted in this instance, as I was not part of the conversation, but then I hope you didn’t feel personally insulted when I made my comment. Did you?

  87. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 21st, 2012 at 8:21 pm

Also, if you didn’t predict and you want to get in on the WS, feel free. With 15 points at stake, it’s possible for someone who didn’t predict at all to this point, to win it all.

  88. jacksquat October 21st, 2012 at 8:24 pm

It’s interesting what a pitcher can do at the plate (Vogelsong) but our guys can’t.

  89. Nick in SF October 21st, 2012 at 8:26 pm

It might have helped if our offense had been facing this version of Chris Carpenter, but probably not.

  90. luis October 21st, 2012 at 8:31 pm

    Nick,

That’s basically what I said. I don’t understand why you said that I don’t take a stand. I usually do. Could you elaborate?

Having said that I agree that supporting the trade and using stats to back it up is not trolling… Taking unnecessary swipes and some ironic comments toward certain posters is stupid and disruptive. You can quote me on that.

  91. Nick in SF October 21st, 2012 at 8:33 pm

This is, let’s remember, a discussion board about the Yankees, baseball in general, and other sports, among other things.

Usually sports trash talk occurs between people who support different teams, but here it’s become more intramural. I engage in some trash talk from time to time, so I’m not going to pretend to be any kid of saint.

But if people want everyone to be nice and for there not to be any personal insults, demeaning comments, or anything else that lowers the fabled level of discourse, is that something they want for all or just for some?

This is a time when we should all be coming together with one voice to be pissed off that the Yankees haven’t already signed the Japanese flamethrower Otani. Let’s not lose sight of the big picture.

  92. Nick in SF October 21st, 2012 at 8:34 pm

    ” I don’t understand why you said that I don’t take a stand.”

When did I say you didn’t take a stand? I wasn’t quoting you.

  93. Tar October 21st, 2012 at 8:35 pm

“You hold tomingeorgia and me to higher standards than Mr. Prufrock? Why would you hold him in such low esteem?”

No. To higher standards than what your posts suggest. And don’t put words in my mouth.

Personally insulted.. well maybe a little with that football results remark.

  94. Nick in SF October 21st, 2012 at 8:43 pm

Tar, anytime you want to hold someone besides me and tomingeorgia to standards higher than any particular post suggests, please go ahead and do that. Throwing a yellow flag in my direction and ignoring much nastier fouls is not appreciated, if you’re somehow still not getting what I’m saying to you. See, I’m holding you to a higher standard too.

And if you missed the point of the football comments, I am sympathetic. Both teams — UNC and Cal — that I wish had won yesterday did not.

  95. Carlo October 21st, 2012 at 8:50 pm

This has beeen one of the most heart wrenching string of posts I can recall in a long time. I’m emotional just reading the back and forth. There’s love, hate, honor, respect, disrespect, empathy, understanding, humility, and showmanship. Its all here. Its so beautiful. #baseballforum #emotionalrollercoaster

  96. Nick in SF October 21st, 2012 at 8:51 pm

I feel your pain, Carlo. Maybe we should try a day with nothing but trash talk and insults.

    A temporary sanctimony-free zone.

  97. Carlo October 21st, 2012 at 8:57 pm

Hahaha. Meanwhile, this NLCS game 7 should be a classic. I see guys hitting .260 with some rbi and I think “wow, that guy is raking this postseason”.

  99. Tidrow October 21st, 2012 at 8:58 pm

Can’t understand why people in media keep saying Yankees should bring Martin back because there are no alternatives out there. A.J. Pierzynski made only 6 mil last yr compared to Martins 7.5 mil. Pierzynski hit .278….27 hr…..77 RBI…… .827 OPS. He’s a lifetime .300 hitter in post season career with a .372 OBP and .527 slugging percentage .892 OPS. Only thing Martin has over him is throwing out runners 30% compared to 24%. You offer AJ the 3yr 21 mil you offered Martin i think he would take it. I know he has a reputation of being an ahole but maybe this team needs a little of that abrasive, toughness. He would add some grittiness to this softee team.

I’m going to say no re AJP. Defensively not good. Kind of a bad clubhouse guy as per most accounts. Would rather go younger and cheaper.

  106. Nick in SF October 21st, 2012 at 9:05 pm

I don’t like A.J.P. (don’t any of you sensitive types take that to mean that I don’t like anyone with the anagram of A.J.P.) but he’s exactly the kind of guy that fans seem to suddenly appreciate once they’re on their team.

Eh, I’d rather have Martin back for one year than A.J.P. for three, but that might not be the choice on the table.

  107. Against All Odds October 21st, 2012 at 9:06 pm

Yankees are big on clubhouse chemistry so Aj is probably a no no.

  108. Tidrow October 21st, 2012 at 9:07 pm

Another thing that makes AJ a good fit; the most he’s ever struck out in a season is 78 times. Again he only made 6mil last yr ! Guy is 36 yrs old but i think he hits well enough to be a DH in event one of Yankees young catchers comes on faster than expected.

  109. Nick in SF October 21st, 2012 at 9:09 pm

“I think and hope you know where I am coming from.”

Well, I’m not 100% positive that I do, to be honest. If you would like to contact me privately to discuss it, feel free to do so.

Bret Bret Bret – I see my name pop up all over this thread like I did something.

I don’t have time to keep up with all this Internet gossip in my life.

Here’s what I’m dealing with right now because I can’t find something I want. Every time I drive down the road I wanna jerk the wheel into a Goddamm bridge abutment! (That’s from Tommy Boy)

I’ve been searching for one simple item that is not for sale anywhere in the United States currently.

Compact Jr Camper Trailer 1971-1975 – VW dealerships sold them for VW buses. They are fiberglass camper shells about ’13 and can be towed with any size vehicle. They have queen beds, sinks, propane stoves, electricity, couches, tables. The restored ones have surround sound and retro interiors.

Someone jumps in to tut-tut about some little thing I said, then I point out how completely wrong they are and then the whole things melts into the woodwork. Crickets!

Just once I’d like someone to come out and say “sure, that other guy says some really nasty stuff, but I’m never going to call him out ‘cos he’s my buddy.” Just once!

    Tar,

I almost had one. Texted the guy in York, SC and he had sold his the day before. Since then my quest has morphed into an unhealthy addiction. I want to paint mine a loud yellow with a black pinstripe across the side. On the inside I want to restore everything like sink, fridge, wiring, gas lines etc. I would get really nice hardware and speakers. I would cover the cushions with plad fabric and finish the interior walls with a tacky 70′s looking wallpaper. I’d do flower pattern curtains that clash with the plad. I’d make the plad shades of 70′s weak green, brown, faint orange and cream on the bedding and sofa. I’d want the cabinetry to be new quality wood but I’d make it look aged and cheap.

    Nick

Did you get it out of your system? I’ve responded two or three times and decided not to post. Very Doreen like, I might add.

Doreen was great, I also miss Erica a lot too.

Don’t think so. I don’t want any jellyfish trapped in the net with a mermaid.

Considering that Doreen was stalked and hounded off of here by C R 9, didn’t we already say that discussing her in this way probably wasn’t a good idea? I thought this already happened.

I miss her comments here too, among many others. I’d like to see Rich in NJ come back as well. I missed him more when he left the first time.

Tar, I’m just getting warmed up! I’m also trying to watch the baseball and football games and I have to keep at least some of my limited attention span to instantly change the channel at the first hint of the Springsteen song. It’s just too much. I can’t take it anymore.

But don’t hold back. If you want to say something, say it, either here or privately. You can always contact me via the email address associated with my flickr page (click link in my screen name here), just take that name and add @yahoo.com to it, and I will be happy to give you an unfiltered and thorough reply.

Or do it here. It’s not healthy to keep it bottled up inside, then you just risk exploding in fury later. Whatever you have to say, I think I can take it.

I think I saw them diverge in their thinking just one time but it was brief. And they rarely exchanged posts which was peculiar to me since both are quick on the draw and like to assert themselves in conversations because they have strong opinions. I’m 95% certain, if you want to talk to Rich in NJ, just summon Jerkface.

  158. yankeefeminista October 21st, 2012 at 10:23 pm

Bret, way to conflate two really distinctive individuals.

  159. Nick in SF October 21st, 2012 at 10:25 pm

Jerkface and Rich in NJ both wanted Derek Jeter to be re-signed at closer to what they saw as his market value after the 2010 season, on the theory that the Yankees were operating on a budget and moneys not paid to Jeter could be paid to other players. There was a lot of pushback against them for that. Both strongly against the Montero trade. Not sure about similarities and divergences on other issues.

    Personality wise, very different.

  160. Bret The Hitman October 21st, 2012 at 10:25 pm

The only distinction is each LOHUD handle.

  161. Duh Innings II October 21st, 2012 at 10:26 pm

    No to this kid.

I want the Yanks to sign Jake Peavy after the Chicago White Sox buy him out for $4M to avoid paying him $22M in 2013 so the rotation is Sabathia / Peavy / Kuroda / Pettitte / Hughes or Peavy / Kuroda / Pettitte / Hughes / Nova, Phelps, Warren, or Pineda if Sabathia misses all of 2013 due to surgery and rehab.

I would offer Peavy a one-year $18M contract so he still makes $22M total for 2013 ($18M salary + $4M buyout) because he needs to show he can repeat his 2013 after three years of not having a full season which to me is at least 25 starts and 150 innings pitched regardless of his ERA and WHIP. He’ll still make $22M but he needs to “do it again”.

  162. Duh Innings II October 21st, 2012 at 10:26 pm

Correction: He needs to show he can repeat his 2012.

I do want Rich to come back… Never interacted with Doreen, but read some posts of hers when she was in the morning. I very seldom post in the morning, but I have only heard great things about her. So she must be the real deal.

So Odds, count me in for the recue operation.

    FTR,

JAP is my friend, and I have his back. Despite what many people think here, he is a class act. He sticks to what he believes, whehter is trendy or not, and that’s commendable. Very few people does that nowadays.

  167. Nick in SF October 21st, 2012 at 10:34 pm

And besides It was nothing ..nefarious (is that the correct?) anyway. Just pointing out that I like to think your both my buddies and this feud has run its course. Time to move on, or not, of course your choice.

    Goodnight Yankee fans.

    No to this kid.

This ‘kid’ doesn’t preclude any of the insane stuff you propose. Its an IFA, like any of south americans teams sign each year. Or like a kid out of the draft. Lmao, who says no to someone in the draft? “NO DONT DRAFT ANYONE!! WE GOTTA SIGN JAKE PEAVY!”

Well, that’s pretty close to what I asked for at 9:52 pm. I can’t really say that Mr. Prufrock and I are currently friends now, but we used to have a much friendlier relationship, especially during a previous incarnation. I think he is often a class act; sometimes, in comments here, he is not. I don’t draw any conclusions about the flesh-and-blood person based on lapses here.

  171. luis October 21st, 2012 at 10:40 pm

Yes Nick… A while back, in the time that I was being accused of being this famous poster… I took the liberty then to send you an e-mail to that e-mail of the flicker account.. In the end, I said that I took the liberty and apologized for it and said that I would understand that you didn’t reply. You never did, so I figured that you didn’t want to. In fact, after the worst was over, I actually thought that you had something to do with it. So that’s why a thank you once. When you seemed surprised I let it slide.

  172. Jerkface October 21st, 2012 at 10:40 pm

Since we’re airing stuff out can I see I cannot possibly fathom why or how some people here get so close so fast? Like why would anyone want to email jmills or even entertain any of his thoughts? Sides will naturally form due to the nature of debate, but some of you all take it to the next level. Then there are the oddities (mick & trisha, really?)

Though on one level it would be galling if they someone shut down the Tigers’ offense and hit the Tigers’ pitching.

Jerkface, is this why you wouldn’t get those Muji pens for me? I would say to you what a very wise person taught me: open your heart and love will always find its way in.

Something similar happened on the ESPN board when ESPN first started using message boards. There was a group of defectors (Yankees fans) who found a college board for some obscure sport with zero posts. In order to post there you had to request special permission via email through the founder. I forget what they called themselves but they gave themselves a name and the board was active and the ESPN board dried up for a little bit until one by one they returned. It was all so crazy.

  191. Nick in SF October 21st, 2012 at 11:01 pm

Jerkface, it’s not written anywhere that this board is for Yankee fans, per se, just that it’s “A New York Yankees blog” — Pete Abe used to have a phrase about it being for discussion of the Yankees. Anyway, as odd as this delicate and sensitive soul often seems, he was very, very often more openly supportive of the Yanks and their chances this October than a lot of other people here.

I prefer these wonderful, sensitive souls who are able to restrain themselves from spazzing out and saying really nasty things about other people, if we’re ranking which types of sensitive souls make for a nicer atmosphere.

  206. J. Alfred Prufrock October 21st, 2012 at 11:15 pm

    Jerkface,

We can’t “entertain” fans of “division rivals” here? Really?? So much for my notion of you as a global citizen.

Really, I appreciate what you bring to this space, and applaud your unconditional intolerance for both gender and racial bias, but, you do seem to suffer from a kind of modern-day “enlightenment” pro-rationalist smugness, but perhaps that’s my own bias speaking ;) .

    J. Mills, I would say, you are not built to appreciate. He has a brilliant – yes, brilliant – literary mind. You don’t care for poetry I take it, which is fine. But I don’t particularly care for post-modern zombie or “undead” serial television, myself, but I actually enjoy – and certainly don’t resent – the interactions that stray somewhat from the linear, here. I sometimes enjoy even more discussions I don’t enter into, because I’m interested in storytelling and how people express themselves, as well as their interactions and how language, word choices, represents identity… these things are not part of your DNA, I take it. That doesn’t mean they are not of interest to others….

    ///

As for the manufactured discussion earlier that took place here, I will say that this place’s charm is it’s organic twists and turns, as well as it’s hardcore and passionate baseball discourse. It’s weakest point, for me, is its insistence on constant self reference, and the demand by some to respond and join in this self referencing… like some white collar “Jack” from Lord of the Flies… in order to…?… I’ll leave that to the psychologists… but thank you to those who spoke on my behalf here. I really have no interest in being a topic of discussion, but I’m also not inclined to dilute my opinions to satisfy some false idea of a “united/communal front” or whatever transparent garbage was being promoted here earlier… I dislike no one here, although I have a strong distaste for the Yankee General Manager, but I would imagine that is not news…

Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming…

  207. Jerkface October 21st, 2012 at 11:16 pm

That too me is truly weird, and seems to be solely a Lohud phenomenon.

  209. yankeefeminista October 21st, 2012 at 11:20 pm

JF, but here the divergent opinions are taken so personally. People internalize everything, whereas elsewhere it is always more about the discussion. Lohud is a different bird, which is both the good and bad of the site. Plus no moderator equals a very oddly negotiated space.

  210. yankeefeminista October 21st, 2012 at 11:21 pm

  217. Nick in SF October 21st, 2012 at 11:31 pm

“Is Melky eligible for WS? I thought he was through for the year.”

He’s been eligible to join their PS roster since they won the NLDS. They reinstated him onto their 40-man roster when they had to to preserve their contractual rights to have an exclusive window to negotiate with him after the WS ends. But they’re not going to activate him during this PS, unless it’s, as I said, an October surprise.

  234. Jerkface October 21st, 2012 at 11:53 pm

See now why would anyone consider Bret a troll?

Anyway, JF as per your earlier comment. If you weren’t aware of it, we did sign an IFA short stop this year in Yancarlo Baez.

Yes but I was referring specifically to top 20 prospects. Stoneburner brought up the signing of the #2 & #4 prospect on a list of 20.

  236. jacksquat October 21st, 2012 at 11:55 pm

Melky was eligible to return in the NLCS but the Giants said they were not going to have him play again this year.

And if Cashman is all about “low risk, high reward” players, Melky fits the bill.

Although he is not really big, nor hairy sans the beard.

  237. Nick in SF October 21st, 2012 at 11:56 pm

I manufactured made the Melky reference because Bret The Hitman predicted that Melky would be WS MVP on July 31. Melky is on the 40-man, they could have played him in the NLCS and they can put them on their WS roster if they want to. But they don’t want to, unless they change their mind. Barring injury, don’t see that happening.

  238. Bret The Hitman October 21st, 2012 at 11:57 pm

    Melky forever.

  239. yankeefeminista October 22nd, 2012 at 12:00 am

Nick, my understanding was that Melky was done for the postseason. Thanks for the clarification.

    JF, whose top 20, BA’s?

  240. yankeefeminista October 22nd, 2012 at 12:01 am

js, but he can hit from both sides and can hit breaking balls. Guess that doesn’t fit in with our platoon happy fastball hitting team.

  241. jacksquat October 22nd, 2012 at 12:02 am

“See now why would anyone consider Bret a troll?”

If we want LoHud to be more like other sports chat boards, then we need more trash talking, not less, no? Anyway, I already issued yellow and red cards for comments issued by Bret and to Bret, so I’ve done my bit to maintain civility and decorum.

Besides, Bret paid his real-life debt to me and will hopefully pay his next one too. Can’t be messing with Bret The Hitman.

  243. jacksquat October 22nd, 2012 at 12:03 am

Melky would fit in just fine, he just needs to stop ordering stuff from fake websites.

  244. CompassRosy October 22nd, 2012 at 12:06 am

    YF ~

Surprised there were no AFL games today but, yesterday wasn’t so good for M’s pitchers (Paxton and LaFromboise). Stefen Romero (M’s Minor League Player of the Year) had a nice day at the plate though – 3/5 with a homer and 2 RBI

Scorpions and Javelinas meet on Tuesday :)

  245. yankeefeminista October 22nd, 2012 at 12:11 am

Rosy, I guess Sunday is the day of rest. Looking forward to Tuesday. Also some of the Caribbean league games are being televised on ESPN3.

JS, actually, two posts disappeared, and rightfully so.

  246. yankeefeminista October 22nd, 2012 at 12:12 am

Rosy, how many innings did Paxton pitch?

  247. jacksquat October 22nd, 2012 at 12:14 am

It’s one of the down moments during the off season and we all know there will be more. I did enjoy some posters getting stuff off their chest maybe we can make it an event. Not every day but certain nights when it’s slow.

  250. G. Love October 22nd, 2012 at 12:24 am

    Odds,

It’s been much nicer in here since the games are over. You can actually talk about the team, it’s flaws and what you would like to see them do without having fecal matter flung at you.

  251. yankeefeminista October 22nd, 2012 at 12:25 am

JF, Baez may not be a top 20 in some eyes (BA’s list), but I recall that the “dominican prospect league” site called him the most projectable of the dominican infielders and highest ceiling defensively. So, we shall see…

JS, no, the other two posts that were deleted. But never mind. I don’t want to give them any extra attention.

  252. Against All Odds October 22nd, 2012 at 12:26 am

I will admit the discussions have been a lot better. It felt like everyone was working on a campaign the other day when you laid out your plan. It was interesting.

Paxton gave up 4 runs in 1.2 innings (47 pitches)

    I don’t get ESPN3 :-(

  254. Nick in SF October 22nd, 2012 at 12:27 am

What was the second post to disappear? The one asking Bret if he’s dumb or dumb is still here.

    G. Love, you’ve got a spine and a pulse, let’s mix it up!

  255. Jerkface October 22nd, 2012 at 12:28 am

No doubt the player the Yankees got may have good qualities or whatever, and prospect lists are subjective. The point is that the Yankees could sign the top 5 consensus guys, or the top 10, or the top 20. They don’t. They have their reasons no doubt, and some of them may be out of their control.

  256. yankeefeminista October 22nd, 2012 at 12:30 am

The two sexist ones, Nick. The second one advocating violence against women. Ok, I’m done with this.

  257. yankeefeminista October 22nd, 2012 at 12:32 am

JF, I don’t disagree; with our finances, the more the merrier considering how many will actually make it. However the rankings of somewhat of a crapshoot. I am just saying that Baez may turn out better than any other SS on the BA list. Then he may not even end up playing the position if he gets too big.

  258. yankeefeminista October 22nd, 2012 at 12:33 am

  259. Nick in SF October 22nd, 2012 at 12:36 am

Oh, the joke he recounted. Gotcha. Someone complained to Chad about THAT? The context was pretty clear to me, he was giving an example of the mores of the South, including redneck humor. Bad taste, maybe, but you think Bret The Hitman was advocating violence against women? Really?

What the LoHud statute of limitations on ugly, sexist remarks, btw?

  260. yankeefeminista October 22nd, 2012 at 12:36 am

Exactly. Whatever. But it’s awful that Bret The Hitman made a sexist remark.

    G. Love, I appreciate it. And Bret made one pretty rude remark and one that I guess was just as offensive depending on one’s perspective. And now they’ve been scrubbed from the record. I feel like I’m getting a glimpse behind the scenes at the Kremlin or something.

Cashman’s comments about the possible trading of A-Rod left the door swinging both ways. That’s because this move will be handled by Hal and Comp. 1st it was Soriano, then Ichiro, and Now A-Rod. Cashman continues to lose the autonomy he was promised by George.

  270. Pat M. October 22nd, 2012 at 12:57 am

Well, Cash told Arod if he opted out of his original contract he would not be offered another. Arod opted out, Cash didn’t make any offer (iirc), then Arod ditched Boras and worked out a deal above Cashman’s head. Since Cash wasn’t responsible for Arod’s current ridiculous contract, I think it would be fitting if those who are responsible for it had to deal with getting rid of him.

I still don’t think he’ll be traded though.

  273. Nick in SF October 22nd, 2012 at 1:10 am

Good evening, Pat M. Now it all comes full circle.

I’ve never handed out a blue card. That would be worse double secret probation. Once you see one of those, you’ll be out of here faster then blank through a goose.

Good news for you: there’s an emerging consensus that a Yankee fan is allowed to like or dislike a trade of a player to another team without being a troll. So you’ve been acquitted.

    Good morning everyone…..

take comfort that Cashman and his brain trust are locked away somewhere deep in Hal’s money bin this morning to plan the 2013 budget and to decide which stop gap outfielder and which scrap heap pitchers to pursue .

Will bobby abreu be available? Should they bring back Ibanez? How can they fit Jonesy and Freddy on the roster? What about Ben Sheets ? How can they spin it all to the public? All these iimportant questions will be answered in due time my friends

  278. austinmac October 22nd, 2012 at 7:58 am

Cashman was quoted as defending the roster being the oldest in baseball saying it doesn’t matter. Remember age is a state of mind and a state of low cost. When everyone else thinks a player is washed up, we know better. Now, that’s a GM.

  279. blake October 22nd, 2012 at 8:00 am

  280. blake October 22nd, 2012 at 8:11 am

The one thing I would ask of Cashan this winter is to spare us the the spin…..when somebody asks what he’s up to just say he’s working on te team like every other GM does…. Spare us the “we hate the prices” garbage….nobody wants to hear that

  281. Yankee Trader October 22nd, 2012 at 8:50 am

    Good morning.

Cashman-If your thinking cheap, have I got a free agent catcher for you.

David Ross, Age: 36, 2012 Salary: $1.625M, 2012 OPS: .770, Career OPS: .769: Ross is probably the most intriguing name on this list to me. He’s never been a starting catcher, but over the past four years he has consistently hit above league average and is a very good defender. It’s possible that given a full time opportunity that he could have a good year and he would come very cheap as well. If the Yankees want to begin to work Romine into the major league roster it may be best to pair him with Ross. It’ll also save them quite a bit of money compared to Martin.

Okay this is getting absolutely ridiculous… when the fans are a storyline you know you ate it hard.

The last time the Stadium and fan base were a talking point was the beginning of 2009 when the NYS first opened… it’s amazing how winning a championship drove that storyline into the ground.

  291. Yankee Trader October 22nd, 2012 at 9:03 am

    Blake-

    YS is a hindrance.

Tex worked in the offseason on trying to hit the other way. After a short time, failing at it, it was back to aiming for the short RF porch-swing hard and hit it over the shift. Usually he rolled over on the pitch-grounding out to the 2B/short RF’er or popped it up.

Granderson-He could go the other way but it’s pretty much all or nothing. Get lucky and guess right, or miss terribly on the CU and strike out.

Swisher-One of the best options to work the count and get on base via the walk, but in a “walk” year you want to maximize the reward so swing from the heels and pad your homeruns to the short porch for that big next contract.

  292. Shame Spencer October 22nd, 2012 at 9:03 am

Annnnnd.. I’m officially talking to myself.

I still think we should institute merits and demerits. If someone says another poster deserves one or the other, we can all discuss and keep track like we would with GTLU.

Whoever has the most merits at the end of the year gets….. something.

  293. Shame Spencer October 22nd, 2012 at 9:06 am

Yes, of course, we in the media contribute and the Yankees stoke all the fires with their championship-or-bust mantra and mandate. But it is hard to ignore what this means to the fans and that Stadium.”

How kind of Joel to take a small, minute portion of responsibility….
