Sabathia has a bone spur removed

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Oct 25, 2012 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Yankees just announced that ace CC Sabathia had surgery to remove a small bone spur today. The surgery has been expected since Saturday when general manager Brian Cashman said Sabathia would visit Dr. James Andrews and a Yankees source said the team expected a bone spur to be discovered in Sabathia’s pitching elbow. Such a surgery is fairly routine compared to over procedures on a pitcher’s elbow.

Here’s the brief announcement from the Yankees.

New York Yankees LHP CC Sabathia was seen by Dr. James Andrews today in Birmingham, Ala. Dr. Andrews performed arthroscopic surgery on Sabathia’s left elbow to remove a small bone spur. Sabathia is expected to fully recover prior to the start of the of the 2013 regular season.

I’d like to see if Cano rebounds vs lefties this coming season before tying up years and money for a Scott Boras client.. Will Boras have a 300 page dossier on why Robinson Cano will go in the history books as the greatest 2nd baseman of all time?
    ——-
Of course Boras will. Question is, can Cano do it three or four more years to prove him right? Somehow, I feel that is a long shot. It isn’t my money, so place your bets and I’ll hold your coats.

  3. Yankee Trader October 25th, 2012 at 4:54 pm

Sabathia will be fine this coming season.

Including the article on Cano again. Interested in knowing whether the Yankees should wait a few months into the season to decide if they want to grant him the kind of extension he and his agent, Boras, will likely demand.

    @mlbtraderumors: Angels Unlikely To Re-Sign Torii Hunter http://t.co/REpfdOiB #mlb

A Hunter Ichiro platoon would be pretty awesome…..Hunter would obviously be more PT than that…..but he’s a Cashman type guy

    Rob (NYC)

Seeing that the Yankees are in MAJOR decline, how good would you rate these “prospects”, Gary Sanchez, Tyler Austin, Mason Williams, Manny Banuelos, Slade Heathcott, David Adams? Are all of them just well overhyped like usual or are some of them legit? Thanks!
    Klaw (1:36 PM)

Banuelos is in purgatory with the arm trouble and I don’t think Adams is more than a fringy bench guy. The other four are all legit prospects with the upside of above-average or better regulars.

  6. Tackelberry October 25th, 2012 at 4:59 pm

Would like to see Melky Mesa get a shot at the RH platoon OF spot.

  7. Yankee Trader October 25th, 2012 at 5:00 pm

    Blake-

Hunter would be what the Yankees might very well want- a FA for a 2 year deal until one of the Baby Bombers are ready. The other option is look for a player who’s contract is up in 2 years.

  8. Tackelberry October 25th, 2012 at 5:00 pm

Many scouts think Adams is more than a fringy bench guy. The guy can hit and his fielding is above average. If not for injuries he might be in the majors already

  9. austinmac October 25th, 2012 at 5:04 pm

    YT,

I don’t think they would give Hunter a two year deal because that goes into 2014, the true Mayan/Yankee end of the world. He is more likely than Upton or any longer term player. He also hits from the correct side.

  10. austinmac October 25th, 2012 at 5:05 pm

Very good news on CC. He has to be the starting pillar.

The previous article on how to build a Giants line up in a very short period of time is really interesting. The Yankees could follow the same model with the difference that they could do it and still spend money on top of that transformation/transition.

  12. Yankee Trader October 25th, 2012 at 5:06 pm

The Angels are set to spend again this offsseason, if they let Hunter go and don’t pick up options on Haren and Santana.

They are probably going to be in the bidding for Soriano when Boras has him opt out.

  13. bruceb October 25th, 2012 at 5:08 pm

Always liked Torii Hunter – and his numbers look great this year – but he’s 37. Any chance of us finding someone whose best years are ahead of them rather than behind them?

  14. be reasonable... October 25th, 2012 at 5:09 pm

What I mean is that in theory the Yankees have a $197M payroll and the Giants did all of that with a payroll of $117M. Even if you grant the plan to bring payroll to under the luxury tax (which I think is more aspirational than actual) the Yankees would be attempting to do what the Giants have done with roughly $60M more to spend.

  15. be reasonable... October 25th, 2012 at 5:11 pm

I like Hunter, too. He seems like a gamer. What would the cost be if you had him and Ichiro in right? I would bet less than what Swisher would cost. And frankly, if the Yankees signed Hunter to a two year deal they could live with him breaking down in the second year of the contract.

No, that’s Scott Boras planting that information. Lohse will be lucky to get more than a 2 year deal as far as I’m concerned.

By the way, found this interesting. Maybe I was wrong in my assumption that Hunter would be low cost. In July he said he would take “$10M to stay with the Angels.” He didn’t want to throw his agent under the bus so he didn’t discuss how low he would go…

You want Justin Upton for right?

Prepare to give Towers what he needs as the Diamonbacks are contenders. He would want major league ready/proven talent in return. Needs a 3rd baseman and SS plus a starter.

Realistically how can the team get younger thru trade when they have few ready, major league, young players to give up?

    Yankee Trader,

I agree with you so I would think the Yankees have to pick the spots where they want to improve and then try to hold serve until better options come along. This is why I think their transformation will be slower but could be done in two to three years while still managing to win and be competitive. So perhaps in right field you go with Hunter as a cheaper option than Swisher or you go with Ichiro for one year and see what happens and what opens up in right field later in the year. It’s a process…

LMAO! Is ARod the throw in to the deal?

BTW I read in USA Today that ARod went out with the Australian swim suit model that same night after game 1 of the ALCS.

  27. Irreverent Discourse October 25th, 2012 at 5:30 pm

What are the Diamondbacks contending for? Last place? They already had a closer, they certainly didn’t need Bell… and they traded Young away for a worse player in Keppinger.

Not alot of options in right field in terms of free agency. From MLB Trade Rumors:

    Right fielders
    Brian Bixler (30)
    Travis Buck (29)
    Matt Diaz (35)
    Kosuke Fukudome (36)
    Torii Hunter (37)
    Andruw Jones (36)
    Ryan Ludwick (34) – $5MM mutual option for 2013 with a $500K buyout
    Xavier Nady (34)
    Juan Rivera (34) – $4MM club option for 2013 with a $500K buyout
    Cody Ross (32)
    Ichiro Suzuki (39)
    Nick Swisher (32)

    Blake-

And I’ll write him a note thanking him and telling him to not let the door hit him on the way out.

The Yankees would be lucky to get away with trading him and only paying the same 66% that they did to rid themselves of AJ Burnett.

  33. trisha - true pinstriped blue October 25th, 2012 at 5:38 pm

One of the reasons I pretty much stay in the middle and don’t get hyped for any player(s) in particular is that posters end up making good arguments on both sides of the spectrum. So I’ll read someone’s recommendation and think, “That doesn’t sound bad” and then I’ll read further down when someone gives an opposite opinion and think “That does make sense!”.

I was listening to EEI this morning and they were talking about the composition of the Giants, how there are no superstars at any position and yet they still excel. I’ve definitely been against having a superstar at every position and have said so on various occasions. Their SP stayed healthy and their top gun had a bad season. I think they said that no SP got over 16 wins, but all 5 members of the rotation had 30 starts or better. When your starters give you 150+ out of 162 starts, that’s something.

So I’m thinking how much fun it would be to have the Giants model. Then I read the posts and someone says we should have it but with Yankee quality players (something like that). So then I think that sounds right.

The one thing I do want, and I have no idea if it will show up, is a team that knows how to bunt and drop in singles. If we have the same group back, I want to see that group do those things as well as hit the long ball. I think it’s silly not to teach your players how to bunt.

  34. Yankee Trader October 25th, 2012 at 5:42 pm

The last time I looked there are only 3 FA outfielders under the age of 30 this next season, that are FA’s this offseason:

    BJ Upton
    Delmon Young
    Melky Cabrera

  35. Jerkface October 25th, 2012 at 5:43 pm

Melky is totally the guy they should try to get. 1 year deal with an option if his value is tanked thanks to his positive test. Could be a really great bargain.

  36. be reasonable... October 25th, 2012 at 5:45 pm

Yankee Trader…if that is true (and I have no reason to doubt it so let’s assume that is true)…would you prefer any one of those three over Ichiro? And why? Of course I am not a GM but I think I would take Ichiro (the age doesn’t bother me with him as much) over those guys considering the cost and the contract. I could then get by for a year in right field and focus on improving the team elsewhere. But again I am not a GM…

  37. Irreverent Discourse October 25th, 2012 at 5:45 pm

“how there are no superstars at any position and yet they still excel”

It’s really sad to hear this repeated over and over again in the media… since the Giants offense doesn’t actually excel at anything I can understand… other than getting hits in the postseason.

There isn’t a person in the world come game 162 that says “This Giants offense will really carry them through the playoffs”.

    Not one.

but that’s why they play the games.

The Yankees can’t do anything startling in the IF. Sign Ichiro for one, Hunter for two and an option, sign and trade Granderson for best AA RH OF offered. (reverse of last trade). Fill in bench, slot Nunez for SS, Adams for 3B next spring – Boom.

I don’t think if you are the Yankees practically speaking you can sign Melky…just because of the off the field issues…I guess I am squishy when it comes to things like that. And I freely admit inconsistent because I would re-sign Andy…and live with A-Rod. It is a tough call in terms of the optics and signing Melky is beyond a baseball decision…it seems more like a brand issue, if that makes sense.

  44. Yankee Trader October 25th, 2012 at 5:52 pm

I wouldn’t mind if the Yankees signed either Delmon Young or BJ Upton as long as they don’t overpay. Young is a Yankee killer & they wouldn’t have to worry about him anymore if he was on their roster. I’d rather have BJ Upton though, he is super talented and I think he could improve in New York.

Yanks should trade for Justin Upton and then sign BJ for an Upton brother OF :)

One golden rule of the offseason is don’t take things floating in the media at face value. Whether it’s players, agents, GMs, or people playing GM in their mom’s basement.

Yeah, another thing to consider is that Mo and Pettitte do this dance every offseason it seems. Don’t know how others feel, but I give them slack because they’ve earned the right. They’ll either play for this club or no one else. It’s a good chance they come back for one more at least.

  61. Bo knows October 25th, 2012 at 6:55 pm

Hunter at 12 plus Ichiro at 8 for around 20 mil gives you fan recognition plus a 10 mil saving compared to Granderson Swisher. A young bat starts addressing youth influx. Martin at some 7 mil stays or goes, can be replaced at that price. Worst approach re talent next to Granderson.

Main question is Kuroda return. Andy will dither and come back. Extend Hughes.

  62. Bo knows October 25th, 2012 at 7:07 pm

The last thing I want is the Yankees to do, is start trading the big four prospects as in Heathcott, Austin, Sanchez and Williams, even Gumbs. For one, you would get fifty cents on the dollar and two, it is the type of short sighted, instant gratification policy that will no longer play. This year, the Yankees were shut out in Rookie/SS top twenty prospects. The sure thing free agent or veteran is a thing of the past until at least the A Rod/Teixeira conundrum is resolved.
