@JonHeymanCBS: sources: girardi made special call to PA/scoreboard folks to spare a-rod’s feelings. http://t.co/3DUDZ6Tx
Yankees manager Joe Girardi made a special call to the public address announcer on the press level during a Yankees playoff game to request that Alex Rodriguez not be named when Girardi pinch hit Eric Chavez for A-Rod, people familiar with the situation said.
So when Chavez pinch hit for A-Rod, only Chavez’s name was announced, not A-Rod’s. Typically the announcement contains the names of both the player who is pinch hitting as well as the person who was being pinch-hit for.
The call by Girardi from the dugout did occur, confirmed general manager Brian Cashman.
Cashman said he believes it showed what lengths Girardi went through to protect A-Rod’s feelings. Such a call is very unusual.
Where in California are these GM meetings?
I’d like to interview Cashman as a representative of the comments section.

Society.
“Who is he talking to?”
Seriously, WTF at his endless string of motivational tweets. I keep accidentally seeing them on here. They’re cringe worthy.
Is he talking to himself?
He has 100,000 followers, so those are the people he is talking to.
Being banned and being suspended are 2 different things.
Without contrition this could be a permanent banning.
You are only banned if you ban yourself.
Are most of his followers high school kids?
was anybody here for that bret shootout?
Mr. mick,
Wish I could walk around the corner and get a couple of slices right now.
As for bret, what in the world did he do?
mr tom
i don’t know how you can live like that.
mr tom
don’t quote me but i believe YF and/or jap found something bret directed at women offensive.
Why don’t we ever get a tweet from Jeter?
I follow Joba so he told me!
mick,
He always has, what’s new this time?
tom
this one had to do with wife beating, I believe.
mick,
Oh. OK.

Hi Against, Mick, Tom and all. Thanks for a fun season. Just bogged down in work,…at least I’m gainfully employed!
jmills ready for the storm?
people are stocking up on food in the big apple.
AAO,
If it was just one every now and then I’d be totally cool with it, but it’s like a non stop barrage. When he does it as often as he does at some point it just kinda comes off corny and not as believable IMO
hows your weather mr tom?
Don’t like that trade for the Yanks not enough in return

Cleveland is targeting pitching. Both Hughes and Choo are FAs in a year. Gardner for Brantley is close. Yanks might have to throw in a Joseph or Marshall – Cleveland does like Yankees’ farmhands given their prior hit with McAllister – - – -

I’m not wild about that trade….if I’m dealing Hughes I want somebody that is controlled longer….especially at the moment when he’s our 2nd best pitcher under contract
I like Choo….but he’s a Boras guy and he couldn’t hit a lefty to save his life last year….we don’t need another of those

The two seasons he’s been healthy he’s won 18 and 16 games….pitcher wins don’t mean everything but they can show you who consistently goes deep enough in games to get positive decisions and Hughes appears to be rounding into a #3 type starter who will pitch better than that at times…..he’s pretty valuable for me at 26

How can they be of equal value? Both are only available for 1 year and pitching is SUPPOSEDLY more valuable than hitting so 1 year of pitching should be > 1 year of hitting, right?

That is fair – I just think he can be replaced in-house, he is an impending FA that might require an overpay, there are injury and consistency concerns as his best season to date has been as a reliever actually – - – –
My bad, I thought Choo had two more years of control left.
Anyway, I don’t think I would trade a starting pitcher for a outfielder like that. Choo has terrible splits vs lhp. I guess Reed Johnson is supposed to play all those games?

Again – not all pitching is equal – especially when you in-house comparables potentially – you are assuming that all pitching is valuable – that is not what Sabean was talking about earlier – again – good pitching with surplus versus good offense with lack of surplus is potentially doable – - – -
Anyways I think I’d do that trade, but maybe only Hughes for Choo. I like Choo a lot, most of his value though was before this year when he had more control. I think he could be a huge platoon bat. His OPS vs RHP is consistently awesome. They could have a guy like Mesa as the 4th OFer vs LHP. Would be a decent way to break in some AAA guys.
Brantley for Gardner is a bit more iffy as we discussed before. Gardners defense and potential offensive upside might be greater. Brantley has intriguing offensive potential but hasn’t been as useful defensively, but is cost controlled for longer.
Interesting trade overall.

Choo had terrible splits this year – but in his career his splits are not at the drastic .199 avg that it was this year. Reed Johnson would fill that Jones role – and could spell Brantley and Choo as we go – if not Johnson – you go with Mesa if you feel confident with those two in RF and LF – - – -
While you would lose Gardner’s potential steals – Choo at least gets in the 20s – Brantley however does not have the track record of being a burner. I am actually not sure how Brantley is defensively – surely is a downgrade from Gardner’s plus defense – but I do like having him for 5 more years and he could hit for better average – - – -
Twinkies are looking for pitching – if you deal Hughes and Gardner for Willingham and Revere is this less or more ojectionable than the Cleveland trade idea?
but I do like having him for 5 more years and he could hit for better average – – – -
–
Better average but similar or worse OBP, so do you like popups as long as they are accompanied by less walks and more hits?
I wouldn’t deal for Willingham because he is older and last year was hella flukey. He can provide like 85% of Swisher production but with worse defense. He is cheaper though. The Twins missed a huge opportunity to trade him at the deadline.
I’d like to just get Melkly relatively cheap for 1 year for RF. Seems like they will just keep Granderson. I’m fine with Gardner. I’d move Gardner to CF and Granderson to LF.

I want basehits – and I am okay with Brantley .348 OBP and 113 OPS – plus I would anticipate a few more homers from his lefty swing. For me – the question is the defense.
Good points about Willingham – I think he has more power than Swish – I am not worried about defense in RF as much in YS – but the road is a different matter – - – -

“That is fair – I just think he can be replaced in-house, he”
With who? I just don’t think you can pencil in 15 wins for anybody else they have in house besides Kuroda if he comes back….I know a lot of folks will say Phelps and I like him but we don’t really know what he is as a big league starter yet
Also….I think If the Indians deal Choo then hey would be looking for more controllable players than Hughes…. They stink and they need lots of things….1 year of Hughes doesn’t help their cause much

The same can be said of Hughes – he is been up since April 2007 – there have been many hills and valleys – and I still am not sure what to think. Nova is practically in the same spot as Hughes was just a year ago and Nova has already had a better season – imo – overall starting wise in 2011 than both of Hughes’s starting seasons. And Phelps sure did look right down the stretch – and throughout the years – do I think Phelps can pitch to a 4ish ERA next year and close to 15 wins – yeah – - – -Phelps did strikeout almost a batter an inning – they are not that far off from each other. It is not as if I am asking Phelps to replace Kuroda – which would be unfair for him – - – -
I don’t think they will even consider Melky, unfortunately. They’ll probably just sign Ichiro for RF. They may get a RH OF for some platooning/rest. That’s probably what will happen. I just don’t see a lot of action this offseason unless Kuroda and/or Pettitte don’t come back, then it might get interesting.
I think the difference between Phelps & Hughes is that Hughes is both more likely to pitch better than league average and more likely to pitch to league average than Phelps is. There is more data on Hughes & he has higher upside to start with.

It is an easier potential sign than dealing with Boras and Choo – - – -and Cleveland is at least getting someone mlb tested rather than some guy from AAA or new to the majors – - – -I could see Francona going for Masterson and Hughes in his rotations going forward – - – -
Melky is a total should they/will they situation. I think its pretty clear they should sign him, most likely player to sign for cheap/lower years thanks to the PED test. He is a good young switch hitter. I also think its pretty clear they won’t sign him because dumb PR.
They should have signed barry bonds in 2008
still mad about that

That to me is still relying on the 2006 Hughes – - – -for once – I agree with Cashman that Hughes is what he is – and for the money he could command – this is not someone I would want to lock into a five or six year deal – - – he reminds me of the Wang situation from way before – - – -
Its not about locking him into a deal, just about what he can provide next year.

I cannot – at this time – separate the two – and I am willing to roll the dice for 2013 on Choo, Brantley, and Phelps – instead of Hughes, Phelps and Gardner – - – -

Hughes has had two healthy seasons as a starter….he’s been above league average both times and won 35 games between those two years.
I wanted Bonds in 2008 and I’m pretty sure I said “Mark my words: the Yanks aren’t making the playoffs this year unless they get Barry Bonds” so my words should be marked wherever it is that marked words are kept.

He’s been mid rotation starter – that to me is Phelps – wins I am not counting as much b/c the Yanks have been a 90 win team for the most part and Hughes got crazy run support as well in 2010.
Is try for Gordon with KC with Hughes before Choo….might take more than Hughes but Gordon is a better defender…. Less platoony…..and is locked up pretty affordabley….also younger
