Twelve Yankees file for free agency
No surprises here, but the Players Association has announced its full list of 137 players who filed for free agency this morning. They become eligible to negotiate with any team at 12:01 am ET on Saturday. For now, there is an exclusive negotiating window with each free agent’s former team. These are the 12 Yankees who filed.
Eric Chavez
Pedro Feliciano
Freddy Garcia
Raul Ibanez
Andruw Jones
Hiroki Kuroda
Derek Lowe
Russell Martin
Andy Pettitte
Mariano Rivera
Ichiro Suzuki
Nick Swisher
Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson and David Aardsma have club options in their contracts, so it’s at least possible — though unlikely — that those three will also become free agents. Rafael Soriano has a player option in his contract, so it’s also possible — and very likely — that he too will become a free agent.

That’s a lot of potential FA’s.
I’d rather take a 2-3 year deal on A.J. than bring back Martin at $13M +.”
Depends on the price but AJ is a lot older than Martin and is highly unlikely to repeat 2012 because he’s never really been that player before and he’s past his prime age.
As JF said in te prior thread….the Yanks need to keep as much potential dead money off the 2014 books as possible as its going to be extremely tight getting under 189…..they can’t afford to tie up players that aren’t very good beyond 2013 if they can help it
I would eat a chunk of A-Rod’s contract and send him to Miami for John Buck. Martin does Not merit a multi yr deal, and the $$$ you guys are throwing in his direction is ridiculous.
Have a good day.
For those of you in the path of Sandy. Stay safe and I hope you fare well.
Keep us updated if you can.
I love the hit and run etc, I’m sure Girardi does too. Right after the hit and run you need another hit or a sac fly. Therein lies the problem.
And we haven’t got to slower than Jesus base runners yet.
The problem with the three run HR is that you don’t know when it’s going to happen. It’s kind of a “Are we there yet”. It’s like going to an Emergency and waiting three hours. Hurry up and wait.
So you sit for seven innings, nothing happened. Finally there’s two men on, no outs and there’s two SOs and a pop up.

Hot Stove!!!
Do you sign Keppinger? Do you bring in Scutaro if ARod is gone and you are worried about Jeter’s ankle?
Do you bring in J.P Howell?
If no Andy – do your bring in Saunders on a team friendly deal as another lefty stopgap (ditto if no Kuroda back)?
Be safe from Sandy – - – -
sign Sori!

The 2012 Yankee offense was 2 walks and then Lucy pulling the football out from under Teixera
Free Bret!!!
I don’t think the Yankees need to sign a free agent LOOGY unless they end up dealing Boone Logan, even then maybe not so. We have Cesar Cabral on the 40 man & Cedeno in the minors.
I would say big time no to Saunders. All he does is give up hits & HRs, bad combination for NYS. Doesn’t strike anybody out. Not quite the type of pitcher the Yankees should be going after.
Keppinger is a guy I’ve said they should be going after for the past 2 seasons, so I’d be down with him as a backup IF. Scutaro would be a good part time guy too. I wouldn’t replace A-rod with Scutaro though. That is a big loss of offense.
Scutero would be an awesome utility guy if they could sign him as that…..he will probably get a full time gig with somebody though
The only reliever I’d be looking for the Yankees to sign is Fujikawa, because he has a chance to be a huge steal. A reliever no one in the MLB has seen who throws 95 with a split finger for 4 AAV or less, who has extensive experience closing, could put up a very sick year out of the pen worth a lot more than what the Yankees are paying him.
Scutaro’s versatility is what makes him attractive.
He could get 500 AB’s backing up Jeter and Arod and occasionally Cano.
He could virtually play every day.
It’s time we get players who know how to win.
Role players not heroes.
2012 WS TV rating is the lowest ever.
shocker, I watched 2 innings total.
They have currently about ten players that contributed significantly this year who will be free agents. Plus, Soriano, Cano and Granderson could become free agents. We pretty much know Soriano will and the other two will not.
I wonder how they will fill all these holes without multi year contracts and still field a competitive team. Mo is far from certain to return or be effective. He will be 43 with a year off. They would not have won the division or been in the playoffs without Soriano last year. I would look into the Japanese closer that is coming over.
I think they are, in reality, as bad or worse off now than the Sox. The Sox can and will spend to improve. The Yankees will not.

It was so painful to watch. SMH
please let martin go.. unless he takes garbage money for a year. Jk, i checked those videos of Fuji and was impressed by it. though I don’t know how big of steal he would be in terms of money but talent yeah.

He is going to make 4 AAV or less on a 2 to 3 year deal most likely. I’d say 2 years with an option & free agency clause would get it done. Japanese relievers simply do not make a lot of money coming over which is why they are great deals. Saito got 3 million total in his first contract. Okajima made 1 million a year. The only reason Uehara got 5 million AAV in his first 2 year deal with the orioles is because he was supposed to be a starter (he was kinda like Smoltz in the NPB) .
Its why I think he will end up being a huge steal. They can replace Soriano for 1/5th the cost. Japanese relievers already end up being pretty good in the majors, and this guy is the cream of the crop.
Do not retire injured Mariano.
Get a deal Mariano, Yankees!
Sign all the Japanese pitchers !
Eric Chavez – YES, 1 year.
Pedro Feliciano – no
Freddy Garcia – no
Raul Ibanez – YES, 1 year.
Andruw Jones – NO
Hiroki Kuroda – YES, 1 year.
Derek Lowe – no
Russell Martin – Yes, 1 year.
Andy Pettitte – YES, 1 year
Mariano Rivera – YES, 1 year, with a mutual option on a 2nd year
Ichiro Suzuki – YES, 1 year, with a club option on a 2nd year
Nick Swisher – not unless you can’t sign Ichiro
Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson and David Aardsma – all YES. Aardsma, is for insurance.
yanks grossly overpaid sori and I am glad he is opting out and we may garner a pick from it. JK, if the AVV is less then 5-6, then he is a bargain.
I have been watching Sports Center for 35 minutes… and thus far there has been no mention of the world series, including on the crawl.
Yeah – I am not seeing Howell as a loogy – and his splits are decent for both RHP and LHP – I would add him to the pen – - – -
Give me Howell, Keppinger, and Reed Johnson as low level additions before dealing with the RF/OF situation, ARod situation, and Kuroda/Pettitte situation – - – -

It’s football season….that’s all they care about
I don’t see the Yankees outbidding everyone for Fujikawa, or for that matter on anyone else of note. My opinion has been, and is, the Yankees are among the least likely teams in baseball to spend on a costly player.
My hope is many people can tell me how wrong I was in a few months. I doubt it. I see Adams, Mustelier, Ichiro and Dickerson being important pieces next year. If Kuroda and Andy odn’t return, add Warren to that list of contributors. Youth is a good thing, but none of the replacements are consider starters on a decent team.
I expect the for first time ever, the Yankees name will not be mentioned by the media when it comes to teh better free agents. They may finally be listening to Cashman and his money blues.
Howell is most definitely a loogy.

2013 roster with staying the course/planning for youth movement:
C: Martin, Stewart
Infielders: Teixeira, Cano, Jeter, ARod, Keppinger, Nunez
Outfielders: Gardner, Granderson, Ichiro, Ibanez, Reed Johnson
Rotation: C.C., Kuroda, Pettitte, Hughes, Nova
Pen: Mo, DRob, Howell, Logan, Joba, Eppley/Ayala, Phelps
@BloggingBombers: The Yankees have chosen to exercise the options for the 2013 season for RHP David Aardsma, 2B Robinson Cano and CF Curtis Granderson.
Soriano was worth every penny last year. He got top closer money and pitched like it. He is an unpleasnat sort it appears, but he saved the games and the season last year.
Like all the other folks that are leaving, hold your joy until you see the replacements. It is the replacements that scare me.
I think the Yankees have a significant chance to drop out of the playoff picture next year and thereafter. Look at the roster, look at the ages and see if you believe the team will improve or regress. They haven’t added any significant free agent for the long term since 2008. How many more years will pass until they do?

*******
Not he is not – 2011 he was coming back from an injury – and that is the closest it comes to loogy stats. The splits are the same career wise for RHB and LHB. And he has pitched to more RH than LH.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L.....specialist
He does NOT come in for the one left handed batter.
Stoneburner,
I think your future roster is quite possible. It doesn’t demonstrate any desire to get younger or better. Sounds like their plan.
mac, you forgot 11.. unless you live in a Yankee universe which Yanks won’t be occupying much longer at this rate. top closer are about 8-10 a year.
As for 13, wait and see I guess.
He is a loogy stoneburner, just because Maddon doesn’t use him like one is his own issue. It is not a winning strategy to have Howell with a .340 OBP against & over .400 slugging facing multiple right handed hitters.
Look at a guy like Jim Johnson, OPS against under .600 vs both sides. Uehara same thing. Mike Adams in his career.
Yankees need Soriano to opt out, especially if Mo does not retire or sign very cheap (unlikely it seems). Paying 25 mil for two bullpen guys is not good for 2013, assuming they will still have a budget, and the target may be lower than 2012.
Near .800 OPS against right handers in 2012! Total LOOGY.

That and the WS was boring beyond belief.
2008 JP Howell would be a great pickup. But 2013 JP Howell coming off an injury followed by 2 LOOGY years is not that guy.
Cashmoney,
Even last year the media acted as if the Yankees would get involved in big free agents while we knew they would not. I remember when the GM meetings and the winter meetings would be an interesting time in Yankeeland. Now, we get to hear about how high the prices are and how they didn’t want to get involved.
My only remote hope is the team sees the ratings decline, hear the booing fans, see the empty seats in the playoffs and realize the fans are unhappy and not optimistic. I wonder what an 8.3% ratings drop means in lost income for next year. Penny wise and pound foolish not to see NYY fans expect some buzz from the team and the consequences if they do not.
I don’t think the Yanks will engage in any long and expensive contracts either.
Yankees (7)
Phil Hughes – $5.7MM
Casey McGehee – $2.9MM
Brett Gardner – $2.8MM
Boone Logan – $2.8MM
David Robertson – $2.7MM
Joba Chamberlain – $1.8MM
Jayson Nix – $900K

McGehee. Why?
Those are projected arb salaries BTW
The Tigers somehow thought they had a good team. If they were in the East Division with the Yankees, they would have finished in fourth place, same is true for West Division, fourth place. Worst team to represent AL in decades.
