AFL Rising Stars game features three Yankees prospects

If you want to catch some of the more intriguing young players in the Yankees system, you can see them tonight on the MLB Network.

The Arizona Fall League doesn’t really have a traditional all-star game, but it does have the Rising Stars game, a showcase of players selected as some of the elite prospects in the Fall League. It’s not necessarily the guys putting up the best numbers, just a collection of players chosen by scouts and farm directors and various Fall League decision makers.

Three Yankees were chosen for the game, which is played tonight at 8:10 p.m. and aired on MLB Network.

David Adams
Who he is: An ankle injury took two years to fully heal, but when it did, Adams returned in a big way this season. He hit .306/.385/.450 with Double-A Trenton, and he’s been a regular No. 3 hitter in Arizona.
Why he matters: Because he could be an offensive-minded second baseman, or a reasonable backup plan at third base, or a valuable trade chip. He was a third-round pick in 2008, and the kid can hit.

Austin Romine
Who he is: At the very least you probably remember Romine from his brief big league call-up in 2011. He had a chance to make the team this spring, but a back injury sidelined him through much of the season. He’s the top upper-level catching prospect in the organization.
Why he matters: Because Jesus Montero is in Seattle, and Romine has a reasonable chance to be at least a big league backup next season. Jury is still out on whether he’ll eventually be an everyday solution.

Mark Montgomery
Relief pitcher
Who he is: The top relief prospect in the organization, Montgomery had 99 strikeouts and 22 walks through 64.1 minor league innings this season. He’s been compared to Dave Robertson.
Why he matters: Because it’s not unreasable to wonder whether he could be in the big league bullpen as early as next season. This guy has seen nothing but overwhelming success in the minors — and in Arizona — and he’s positioned to move quickly.
