A few mid-day notes from Day 1 of the GM Meetings

Tweet [1]

The General Managers just broke for lunch. Brian Cashman and his crew, including Billy Eppler and Jean Afterman, just walked through the lobby without really stopping to say much. So far it’s a predictably quiet day out here. A few notes from here and there …

• Back in New York, CC Sabathia said this afternoon that he’s been lobbying to get Andy Pettitte to pitch one more year. [2] Sabathia also said he’s hopeful that Hiroki Kuroda will be back next season. The Yankees feel the same way.

• Joe Girardi did not rule out the idea of shifting Brett Gardner to center field [3]next season, but he also said no firm plans are in place because no firm roster is in place.

• The Yankees announced that Joba Chamberlain will be at Yankee Stadium to help with storm donations tomorrow. Chamberlain will be at Gate 2 beginning at 2 p.m.

• The Yankees also announced that the New York Urban League Football Classic has been cancelled in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The game was supposed to be played at Yankee Stadium on November 17, next Saturday.

• Here’s a popular name around here: Justin Upton is reportedly back on the trade market. [4] Ken Rosenthal reports that Upton had the Yankees on his no-trade list this year, but that list has changed his offseason. By the way, the Diamondbacks do need a shortstop, but Rosenthal dropped Elvis Andrus as a possible trade target. That’s a nice way of saying Eduardo Nunez isn’t enough to get the job done.

• Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal as been suspended 50 games. He tested positive for a high testosterone level.
