No surprise: Trout unanimous Rookie of the Year
First, a bit of advice: If you live in Westchester, and you have a sister who lives in Oakland, and that sister wants to fly to New York for a wedding. Do yourself a favor and tell her she’s absolutely not allowed to fly into JFK. Three and a half hours round trip, and I just made it home to see the not-so-shocking news.
Mike Trout has won the American League Rookie of the Year award. His historic season earned all 28 first-place votes, making him the eighth unanimous A.L. Rookie choice (Derek Jeter is also on that list). Yoenis Cespedes was second and Yu Darvish third.
The Yankees top rookie, David Phelps, did not get any votes. Wei-Yin Chen got two third-place votes, and Jarrod Parker got one third-place votes. They were the only other players in the mix.
In the other league, Bryce Harper was just announced as the N.L. Rookie of the Year, finishing barely ahead of Wade Miley.

I think we should keep our cover for now
Too late for me but you’re still safe.
Bond has nothing on you !
Another time I find myself missing GB.
He’d just come out and tell me I was full of crap.
MTU,
I know you like folksie type music….ever listen to munford and Sons?
Blake-
No. I’m onto Allison Krause these days (so to speak).
Guess I should then ? Any particular song or album ?
Uhm….they are all good… “The cave” and “I will wait” are probably their most famous ones…..

When will he be throwing 97 mph?
Blake-
OK. I’ll try to check them out when I get a chance.
I just found out that my baby Sister also has some inner redneck.
She likes Keith Urban and the guy who wrote “red Solo cup”. Pretty suprising for a preppy girl from NJ.
She and her husband really dig Nashville. They’ve vacationed therir several times now.
I need to send her over to Jack Daniels.

Embrace it

You got your digits reversed on Pineda.
I’ve got to run.
I’ll see you on the sunnyside.

That and why the Yankees have a 189 million budget are the two biggest questions for me. Wish I had answers for you…

On this date four years ago the Rockies officially sent Matt Holliday to the Athletics for a package of players including Carlos Gonzalez and Huston Street.

And how is the greatest Yankees produced hitter since Mickey Mantle did not get any ROY votes???
“Wait – but I thought young position players are not traded – next thing lohud posters will say there is no Santa Claus – – – -”
You missed the part about that being 4 years ago …..they are traded sometimes…..but less and less often because of the way the game is trending….it’s trending younger And because of revenue sharing more teams are locking their young position players up long term
@Buster_ESPN: It’s worth repeating: Trout/Harper to MLB what Bird/Magic were to NBA in 1980.
Maybe when MJ comes along he will be a Yankee! Or he will be traded for a pitcher

*********
Nahhh – my original post has the 4 years in it. Let’s go to the tape:
Before 08 season – Hamilton traded for Volquez
08 season – Tex gets traded for Elvis Andrus and company
’08 offseason – Holliday and CarGo exchange teams
09 offseason – Granderson and AJax exchange teams
2010 season – Lee is exchanged for former top 10 pick Justin Smoak
Before 2011 season – Marcum traded for Lawrie
2011 offseason – AGon is traded for Anthony Rizzo
2012 season – AGon is traded again
Justin Upton and Chase Headley – as well as Elivs Andrus, Mike Olt and others have been rumored in trades during 2012 season or during offseason – - – -
Most of those players were not in the big leagues when they were dealt….they were prospects deals….those still happen…..big league proven position players who are young aren’t traded very often unless there is some unusual circumstance
Justin Upton and Chase Headley – as well as Elivs Andrus, Mike Olt and others have been rumored in trades during 2012 season or during offseason – – – -
Olt is a prospect still , they aren’t trading Elvis….Upton has issues with ownership apparently ….and I doubt Headley is dealt.
So AGon is the only young quality major league position player to be traded in several years. Going to the tape proves Blake’s point.
I see that Cito Culver has dropped out of the Yankees top ten prospect list. Wonder who made that call?
It also doesn’t make sense to go back to 2009. The end of the 09 season really marked the end of the offense rich era in baseball.
We are now watching a sport in which pitching is easier to come by than hitting, but many fans haven’t been able to adjust because of cliches like pitching wins.
Young cost controlled position players are the most valuable and hard to come by commodity in MLB these days.

You can send us Zunino for Salary Relief. We’ll be very happy.
Still say The Yanks need to move Granderson and Cano and start rebuilding for 2015……Kuroda and The Dodgers are exchanging numbers……Starting pitching is now a 20 something mix after Sabathia as the Derek Jeter era is looking to be over……

Correct
Pat M,
If the yanks either won’t sign Cano or will hold the contract against the team then Im all for an aggressive strategy…..I just think it’ll be very difficult to get fair value for Cano…..

And yet we saw two of the best young rookie position players in decades, in the same year. A player finally claimed the Triple Crown again.
And for all the value of these position players, two out of three World Series have been won on the back of the easier-to-come-by pitching.
So what to make of it?
Has there even been a peep about trading Cano or Granderson reported? That would make me think neither are being shopped.
But Cashman is pretty stealthy…
I doubt they are shopping Cano….but they have probably at least gauged the market on Grandy

I wouldn’t hold your breath on that one, JS
blake…..It’s my opinion that Cano’s best years are behind him and his most expensive years lie ahead…….

blake…..It’s my opinion that Cano’s best years are behind him and his most expensive years lie ahead…….
Can’t argue….I think he will be the player he is now a couple more years.. But I could see him declining early
I dunno Pat.
I was disappointed by Cano’s season, and it was a career year. I think he’s got at least two more seasons of even better production. Then who knows? He’s got a great swing. He’s loaded up on power. He could last. However it’s highly unlikely he lasts the length of the contract he’s seeking…
I don’t know if I’d agree that pitching is easier to come by than hitting.
Only one top pitcher available this year, Greinke. The others like Sanchez and Lohse aren’t all that exciting. Next year the top pitchers are Josh Johnson and Lincecum, both with question marks. In fact, the Yankees have no #2 starter for 2014 and I don’t see the plan. Perhaps Cashman is praying that Pineda will return to #2 form.
I think younger players in general, both pitching and hitting are getting locked up earlier and more often.
The Yankees need to trade Granderson and Cano. They don’t have room for them under the $189 million cap.
What could they get for Cano?

Nahhh – going to 2011 and 2010 is not going to the tape – as there is a pattern – it happens almost every offseason and mid-season – that is called a reoccurring pattern – - – -

But Olt is just as much of a prospect as Montero was last year – and now Utpon is not considered in the category of young hitter being shopped b/c he is a special case of trouble with ownership – the parameters of this thing keeps changing.
Oh – and this interesting line drawing of 2009 being the last year of – it is just another convenient addition to the meritless argument that young hitters are not traded – - – -Come on – - – -
Yankeesource ?@YankeeSource
@jpl_007 I agree, no need to be devastated if Martin doesn’t sign.
24m Yankeesource ?@YankeeSource
I’m starting to feel that Russell Martin will fall out of the Yankees price range.
“Oh – and this interesting line drawing of 2009 being the last year of – it is just another convenient addition to the meritless argument that young hitters are not traded – – – -Come on – – – -”
Nobody said they were never traded….just that they aren’t traded often if they are any good because 1) offense across the sport is down and it’s more
At a premium 2) the game is trending younger again with drug testing 3) so many teams are flush with cash that they don’t have to trade them anymore
Comet…….I’m not certain as to what The Yanks could get in return for Robinson Cano, however they need to find out and I’m sure it’d be more than a top draft pick……..Yanks need to circle the 2015-16 seasons as the timetable to being relevant again……I see no way they can just keep bandaiding their way through the next few seasons……..Best thing to do is move valuable assests now….Granderson and Cano will bring back some nice young players if done right…….
It’s not that pitching is easier to come by its that the steroid era is over. Yes guys are still using but many of the big name guys are gone and amphetamines are out of the game.
“But Olt is just as much of a prospect as Montero was last year – and now Utpon is not considered in the category of young hitter being shopped b/c he is a special case of trouble with ownership – the parameters of this thing keeps changing.”
If you notice that now when younger impact players get traded these days it’s often because of a certain problem….guy needs a change of scenery….doesn’t t get along with ownership…..etc…..otherwise players are moved when they are close to their walk year if a team isn’t in contention.
Teams are locking up their position players early like we’ve never seen before….mostly because they have the money to do so
And if its not done right?
Think about the best players in baseball…..Braun, Tulo , Cargo, Cabrera, Mauer, Upton, kemp, etc…. Even Pujols and Cano were all signed before they became free agents…..teams are trying to sign players through about age 30 if they can a lot of times so they can get their best years and then either trade them or let them walk…..
“I see that Cito Culver has dropped out of the Yankees top ten prospect list. Wonder who made that call?”
Me. I’ve been pissed off at that guy ever since they drafted him.
What could they get for Cano?
———
Maybe a top spect and one or two second tier guys
@markasaxon: Source: Dodgers out on Torii Hunter
Nick it didn’t make much sense at the time. How’s like out on West coast?
Always enjoy your humour.
Pat M. your OKC guys are costing me money tonight.
I think it depends on which team you’re dealing with what you could get for Cano… Could they go to Detroit and get Castellanos and Rondon? Or more……maybe….but then you have to consider facing Fielder , Cabrera, and Cano in the same lineup and you’re dealing him for prospects……
I have a hard time seeing them bein able to get enough big league talent back…..
I wonder what it would take to get Carlos Santana (catcher, Indians)…
blake….I think there’s several clubs who think they’re almost there and are just one key player away from the brass / gold ring…..And I also think Granderson would be looked at the same way………I said to Rich in NJ back in May it’s a tough call for ownership and it could be a defining offseason for the club moving forward………..Money will be a deciding factor as we all know………I mean the rotation is young aside from CC, so why not strive to freshen up the everyday lineup as well
It’s pretty chilly out in my part of the west coast, I think I’m too close to the ocean.
Not sure what the theory was on Cito. Maybe he’ll surprise us yet.
Pat M,
I’m with you….I just don’t think the Yanks have the stones to deal Cano….I think they’d be afraid of te fan backlash and they’d be afraid that they wouldn’t get enough in return……
Honestly Id rather them just pay him and keep him and then when he started to decline just deal with it like they used to…..but with the budget and how they are operating now there is a strong case to be made for trading him for max return now to avoid overpaying him or losing him for nothing…….I just don’t see this current regime making that tough decision….maybe I’m wrong
Nick in SF…..A few weeks ago several old timers met in New Haven for a reunion and a homerun contest…….Charlie Spikes and Otto Velez launched 17 each……I made it to the 2nd round with a total of 2……..I did rebook and left the following day ( Sunday ) before hell arrived………UCLA baseketball team looks very very good, and the 6-9 point guard Anderson is the real deal……Magic Johnson clone
“Don’t you think it’s time we come clean and tell the good LoHud folks who we really are and what we really do ?”
Thanks MTU and blake for the greatest conversation ever lol.
Pat M, I was about to ask you how the West Haven trip went, glad you had a good time and glad you made it out before Superstorm Sandy hit.
I see that UCLA is picked to finish atop the Pac 12. Looking forward to the Cal-UCLA matchup. You’ll be very happy that Jorge Gutierrez really did graduate, so he can’t hurt you anymore.
Nick in SF….They still have Allen Crabbe…..And yes finally after 6 years Jorge is no longer hanging around at Haas Pavilion but his ghost still haunts Bruin fans
Hey Shame! You are up late tonight!
Hi comet! Yeah I wanted to check in.. figured the Yanks would be just the thing to put me to sleep
The Yankees are going to make shocking and surprising moves this off season! Stay awake Shame!
