Report: Blue Jays close to acquiring Josh Johnson
Here’s a blockbuster for ya…
Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal are reporting that the Blue Jays and Marlins are working on a massive deal that will send five players — including ace Josh Johnson, shortstop Jose Reyes and starter Mark Buehrle – to Toronto. The details are still rolling in, and there’s still some uncertainty about which names are involved, but clearly the Marlins are clearing a bunch of payroll and the Blue Jays are significantly remaking their roster.

marlins payroll is going to be ~20 million after this deal
Just shut the Marlins down, they are a joke. Who would ever want to sign there with the hope of building anything and any young player will want to leave. Move the Franchise
Now that’s exciting !
Too bad it’s not the Yankees.
Not sure putting Jose Reyes hamstrings on Toronto turf 1/2 the season is a wise idea, but that is a monster deal for Toronto.
With a healthy Bautista they may actually be a real threat.
Gimme Stanton.
Marlins clearing money for AROD?
Ha Arod for Stanton
G. Love-
May ? Will be.
hankschulman
I just called the Marlins seeking parking passes for next season and they offered me Ricky Nolasco and Logan Morrison instead.
JoeyBats19
Its a good day to be a bluejay!
JJ, Beurhle, Romero, Drabek, Morrow.
I’d say that’s pretty damn good if everyone stays healthy.
Reyes is really the only player that I’ve heard that worries me. Buehrle is fine but nothing special at this point. Johnson is always hurt and his stuff has taken a step back because of the injuries. Getting Buck is a decent addition to.
MTU,
I’m stunned and just wrapping my head around the fact that the Jays, O’s and Rays could all be passing us soon while Hal and Cashman sit in a sweat lodge together playing with their abacus.
Watch Cashman trade for Mike Stanton and think we’re getting Giancarlo only to have our old reliable lefty show up for the press conference!
The Marlins are a joke. I wish the Yankees had gotten Johnson and Reyes. Sucks to be Jose Reyes, this is why you get a no-trade clause.
G. Love-
You forgot the Sux.
They have a ton of free cash to spend.
If the Yankees rest on their laurels now they are punting next season.
the O’s might even wind up w Hamilton.
John Farrell: “Hey guys, I was just kidding about signing with Boston.”
Johnson, Buehrle, Reyes
=============================================================
Any one of those 3 would have looked good in a Yankee uniform.

This isn’t the trade the Dodgers made with Boston if its all true…..this makes the jays a lot better and a playoff contender pretty much instantly
Just trust the process & the budget. In 2025 we’re going to be sensational!
Yea Im sure Reyes is pumped about moving to Canada
Holy cr@p
Yankees should hire Loria & Beinfest if they’re serious about cutting payroll.
Well. The AL East is just about to get more interesting. Good for the Blue Jays.
So the Marlins are basically going to be Giancarlo and the dancing disco out in center?
Did tax payer money go to the new Marlins stadium? Loria deserves to be thrown in jail, if so.
Baseball in Fla.
Well, the Yanks will be in the playoff race but this makes the AL East perhaps the toughest division in baseball. The fans won’t stand for it but it wouldn’t be the worst thing if the Yanks do trade guys like Granderson and other tradable assets to infuse some young talent and hope to get back into serious WS contention by 2015…
The Orioles are legit. The Rays will be tough again. If the Jays are legit…. are the Sawx easily the worst team on paper in the division? and how tough will it be for the Yanks to make it through?
hmm. Yanks can certainly find a way to win – but what’s the best strategy?
The Marlins really are a joke of a franchise. I understand wanting to cut bad contracts but this makes their spending spree seem like a cheap ploy to get fans into the park for the first year…. I figured they’d at least try to keep Reyes….
The AL East is just about to get more interesting. Good for the Blue Jays.
———————————————————————————————
Now, what moves will Cashman make?
Did tax payer money go to the new Marlins stadium? Loria deserves to be thrown in jail, if so.
—
Yes, from what I understand approximately 80% of the new stadium was paid by the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County (the tax payers).
The fact the Marlins didn’t get one of the catchers is surprising as well
RMS-
Do not expect a a signifcant response. Especially if it involves a lot of money.
I guess I’m in the minority, but this trade just doesn’t impress me. The two pitchers have big names, but bigger question marks. Reyes obviously helps. But jays gave away some good young players too.
Giancarlo Stanton ?@Giancarlo818
Alright, I’m pissed off!!! Plain & Simple
Cashman get to work!!!!!
Well BD, the AL East was already the best division in baseball. The Rays should have been in the playoffs, not the Tigers. We had three playoff teams.
I do question the O’s, still. The rotation should improve, but the bullpen is about to crashland to earth. They played way over their heads, and they’ll be burnt out.

—————————————————————
Not much judging by the sound of interviews. Cashman has been stealthy in the past but I really think Hal is limiting what he can do…. I think the goal is to have as few players under contract entering 2014 as possible. That likely means 1 year guys like Ichiro coming back.
MTU
Well, I guess Cashlessman will be looking for cheap leftie hitter beasts.

They also jacked up the free agent market. How can Selig stand for this? This is against the spirit of the game.
Jon Morosi ?@jonmorosi
#Marlins opened season with a payroll of roughly $100MM. After this trade, non-arb 2013 obligations will be ~ $16MM. Historic salary dump.
1. AROD would never approve a trade to the Marlins now.
2. Time for the Yankees to swoop in and trade for Giancarlo Stanton.
Giancarlo in YS would be unbelievable. 50 homers easily… but he seems to be the Loria centerpiece of the franchise. Tough for him…
Trade for an upset Stanton please
mason williams and phelps for stanton?

mason williams and phelps for stanton?
———
That’s an overpay compared to this deal. Adam Warren would be the equivalent headliner for Stanton.
warren for stanton would be great!
Miami-Dade County
$376.3 million
City of Miami
$132.5 million [a]
Miami Marlins
$125.2 million
Cost
$634 million
Congratulations to the taxpayers of Miami-Dade County. Loria just gat ‘ya.
I just cant believe MLB allows the Marlins to function this way. The deal with the Tigers and now this….
Didn’t they get reprimanded a couple years back for not spending enough on the team?
The Orioles are legit
——————–
Based on what? Their non sustainable 1 run and extra innings win record?
They will be lucky to be 500 next year
All the prospects for Stanton
I hope the Rays understand they are never getting a new stadium after this fiasco in Miami…. Florida will never approve something ever again.
i can see Stanton’s numbers dropping this year because of his situation in Miami….
The Marlins are a joke of a franchise. They make a bunch of big signings, open a brand new stadium, and now everyone is gone after one season. One. What a bunch of clowns. And who are they getting in return…. Heccavaria who is all glove, no bat? Freaking Yunel Escobar? And Marisnick who hit .233 in AA last year. Wow. Those guys down in Florida really know what they’re doing.
This is why this luxury tax BS is just stupid. A team like the Marlins can pull crap like this, but lets punish the teams that are in large markets and can afford to spend.
Yea the Marlins were reprimanded by MLB for pocketing the majority of their revenue sharing.
Marlins only team that charges media to park, and you must buy it on their Web site and pay handling fees, too. Cost $78 for 4-game series.
— Andrew Baggarly (@CSNBaggs)
St. Pete has already told the Rays they are not getting out of their lease which I believe runs until 2025. Good luck with that.
Wow just wow, J.P. arrancibia was also included, so as long as the yankees are trading for Stanton might as well as for J.P. too
JP would be a nice pick up. Young and still developing.
You folks don’t get it.
The Marlins want to KEEP their cheap guys.
Stanton is a star and he’s cheap.
FLASH: Marlins included their staduium in the deal too!
Besides South Beach what other reason would any FA sign in Miami?
Also good luck to Tino now…..
Whoever said that the taxpayers of Miami got screwed was dead on.
Whoever said that teams should not be allowed to operate in this fashion was equally spot on.
If I were the Rays I’d demand an immediate release to move to Charlotte.
Baseball in Fla. is a Joke.
And by the way, I’ll take Friedman and all of the TB scouts.
If I were the Rays I’d demand an immediate release to move to Charlotte.
—
If I were the Rays I’d demand to be given Marlin park. Contract the Marlins and just give their stadium to the Rays, a team that actually deserves it. The fish theme still works too so we get to keep the dinger machine and therefore everyone wins.
AND their pitching development people.
don’t know what they are giving back but they are picking up almost 40 mil per
At this point Hamilton could offer to sign for 30 million for 2 years with us and we would turn it down
Here the yankees are twiddling their collective thumbs as every team in the A.L. east gets better. Meanwhile we concentrate on Raul Ibanez and Russel Martin and trot the same 40 yr olds out year after year.

crap
blake-
Process this.
The AL East just got even tougher.
Solid rotation on paper but who would the Blue Jays have worth a damn offensively besides Bautista, Encarnacion, and Reyes to back up that rotation?
The 2012 Blue Jays finished 73-89 with a dreadful team ERA of 4.64 and a dreadful team slashline of .245 / .309 / .407 / .716.
I don’t see Josh Johnson, Mark Buerhle, and Jose Reyes significantly improving on that enough for the Blue Jays to win even the second wildcard slot. 81-85 wins tops.
BTW this would be a one-year rental of Johnson and who’s to say Reyes won’t demand a trade and become a free-agent to get out of Toronto? Buerhle got his World Series ring with the 2005 Chicago White Sox so I doubt he’d care if he was traded to Toronto, but I could see Johnson and Reyes saying “Get me the @#$% outta here!”
The Marlins pulled a fast one with their fans again. Scumbags!
are the Yankees really plannng on playing B Gardner in LF …..do they think he can steal 1st base
I bet mark Buerle is pumped right now…. Id be very hesitant to sign with the marlins now after this stunt if I was a player
I hope Mac doesn’t see this trade.
His head might explode.
The Jays and Red Sox will be better than last year….the Orioles seem committed to staying around….and the Rays will be there as always……..just be content Yanks….you’ll find yourselves in 4th place in a flash

I would love to know how much money the NYY really have compared to other teams. 29 MLB teams are MLB teams, the Yankees are a global brand. I live in England and if I went on a walk around town every day, I would be guaranteed to see at least a dozen NYY items, many of which are officially licensed. I can go into any of the sports shops in town and buy hats, bags and other NYY merchandise and it is all licensed. Go to any developed nation and you will see a lot of officially licensed Yankees merchandise. I just don’t see how they do not have a massive financial edge on all of baseball. yes, they have the highest salary, but lately they feel like they are back in the rest of the pack (with historical signings, like A-Rods albatross deal being largely responsible for their payroll).
Blake-
The Yankees are good just the way they sit.
Ask Hal and Cashman.
The Red Sox are going to be better how exactly? They have a bad team and nothing to trade. Their staff still stinks and the pen is the same. And we haven’t even started on the lineup or defense. I hope they blow all their money now. They will repeat the same mistakes of the past
Paco-
You are not getting it mate.

One of the most amazing salary dump/lopsided trades in recent memory.

Man that AA likes to wheel and deal.

I don’t care about the Marlins. What I care about is another competitor improves. We knowingly regress without a youth movement.
Imagine adding any or all of the trade players? I wish I could anymore.
isn’t there a minimum payroll that must be met by teams?
@jimcallisBA: Looks like Norris, Smoral, Alford will move into Top 10. @rafaanieves: How does the #Bluejays Top 10 look like now?
Mac-
I was worried about you when you caught the news.
Is your head OK ?
I’d say the young Jays GM is doing a very nice job of turning that franchise around. Even ridding themselves of Wells. He stole Morrow from the Ms for nothing. I was really upset Yankees never gave him a look even if only as a reliever. His stuff was too good. And not that Rasmus has panned out but he got him for nothing as well.
Well at least there is finally something to talk about.
Taxpayers in the Miami area must be major-league pissed off. Foot the bill for some BS stadium, get the hype, get an idiotic, fanatical Manager, only to see the owner sell off all the pieces as soon as the snow falls north of the border. What a joke.
Once again while our esteemed GM is saying it is early, that things are quiet, not to expect to much, you have other GMs in his own division that have the utter nerve to think it is not too early to make some moves to improve their team.
Good thing we have a cautious GM as I’m sure all the best deals will be available in mid February.

MTU,
I managed not to bang my head, but strained my neck shaking my head so much. I sometimes remember when. Wasn’t it fun when the team was in on the good players? Now, it seems good players get no consideration due to longevity and cost.
As a great movie character once said “Inconceivable”.
Mac-
Glad you’re OK. I thought your head might explode.
Yes. It was easier when the Yankees were able to flex their financial muscle.
We have a promising Farm but it’s gonna take some time.
And banking on the Farm is always risky.
189 is a straightjacket worthy of Houndini.
Quite a contraption Selig came up with to stifle the Yankees.
My name is Hal Steinbrenner and I love #’s.
And I love spreadsheets too.
Austinmac…..The only thing I’ve heard is that The Dodgers are hot for Kuroda which isn’t really news…..But the hot stove season has started early and with a purpose……..Onething is for certain, The NY Yankees are at a major crossroad and what ever they decide to do will dictate where they’re going to be in 3-4 years from now…….. i always felt that 2012 was their last real shot at a Championship and then the way the playoffs map roaded itself out I felt real good abouut them winning The AL Pennant…….They in my opinion can no longer highwire act themselves from the past and the future and remain relevant in the present…..That shipped sailed at Cormmeca Park four weeks ago……..Move assests and get into position for 2015
And I love the Limbo.
Just watch me limbo under this 189 bar.
I can get under it w/o even breaking a sweat.
See how low I can go. It’s easy Man !
I really hope the Yankees are in on NAPOLI. His low BA last year is a result of an unusually low and uncharacteristic BABIP vs LHP.
He’d be great with his oppo power aiming at the short porch.
Reyes a Blue Jay on turf. Hopefully the 19 times we play them the pitchers can hold him close and a catcher, whether that be Eli Whitside, Romine or Cervelli can keep him from turning singles into triples.
LGY……So I can fully understand this, you rather flop Naps behind the plate over Russell Martin ????? I understand that Martin will cost more but that’s your pick ????
If one looks at the past few seasons, finances have changed how they do business. They signed no costly free agents and made no mid season deals that cost money for three years.
Most all of us have been on the prospect bandwagon for years. Just a few years ago the team had a supposed top flight minor league system. None of those guys panned out for the Yankees, in any event.
Not developing players and not spending can only lead to disaster. Just a couple year’s ago we discussed how the Yankees were relying heavily on their big time pitching prospects a year or two away. Those final hurdles are monumental. It is made by select few.
I would like to see some sign of a plan.

Still on board. Read your piece on It’s About the Money.
Don’t you also include any $6M marketing bonus that ARod receives in any given season toward the final tally at that seasons end toward the LT.
Also how much would you say the team has to factor in for inseason trades and pickups.
I commented this morning that with ARod, Tex, CC and if Jeter opts out and gets a QO and takes it, that the Yankees will not be able to pay Cano what he wants and factor in the other costs, 11M benefits, marketing bonuses, inseason pickups and arbitration cases plus 3 upcoming FA’s plus pay the rest of the 40 man roster.
Hosed or not hosed!

Yes, but I think its not likely A-rod meets one of those milestones in 2014. 2013 & 2016 look most likely right now.
I wanted David Ross behind the plate and feel the Braves made a big mistake not giving him a 2nd year especially with McCann not ready till May.

that’s what I was asking, is that serious ? Napoli and Martin being compared as to which is more valuable ? Joking right ? Minor League Martin’s agent will try anything to get him paid after they dropped the ball on the guaranteed 3 years thinking he should get 7/180.
Ever read Martin comment about being a 35th round draft pick ? “In my mind I was a first round pick”.

That was fast. So if you focus on a number for opening day AAV, is it safe to say that the Yankees accountants, for 2014, would suggest setting aside the close to 11M benefits and leave, maybe a 6M cushion for inseason acquisitions- so for 2014 maybe the figure to start the season would be 189M less 17M or 172M?
YT-
Though they don’t lie I find little solace in numbers.

If A-rod has a crazy season next year it could change, but I don’t think they need to worry about the 6 million in 2014. So they have 189 – 11 million for benefits – ~5 million for the 40 man roster – wiggle room for trades.
If Jeter accepts his option he can earn bonuses in 2014 with a gold glove, mvp finish, or ALCS/WS MVP, so they have to be careful of that too. So maybe 6 or so million for bonuses/trade worry.
Thats 189-22 = 167
MTU-
Yes I found the answers in the #’s, and it doesn’t look good until some of the baby Bombers are permitted to contribute.
The Red Sox and Marlins were able to clean house because they don’t give out any NT clauses in their contracts.
Will FA’s look at the Yankees as a desirable place to play and live?
BTW, can players traded in the middle of their contracts, still demand a trade?
Excellent post at 8:46 mac especially the parts regarding the minor leagues. It’s been 7-8 yrs and the best pitcher to come out of the farm is Drob. I love him and hopefully he is a key piece for yrs to come but when you’re most valuable pitching asset is a relief pitcher it exposes how bad you have been at developing starters and position players.
Thanks JF.
So it seems that the Yankees can’t afford to take on a fourth $20M+ contract that would be in effect years 2014 thru 2016 year end.
New Post——————–>
I shouldn’t have used the word afford-instead the Yankees won’t go there!
Both Alex and Tex need to take salary cuts to help the team reach their goals even if is for just one year. Can you imagine what moves we’d be able to do if Arod and Tex gave the yankees a new contract that backloaded their last 2 years.. Steve Jobs took a $1 salary.. these guys are hurting the team, shoot give them a percentage of ownsweship but somehow get these handcuffs to loosen a few notches. They can’t live up to their salaries by even performing as all star level let alone the legends they are paid for and sure as heck are not.
If Arod wants fans to like him he’ll act. But wait, if he gives them a season for minimum pay he’ll only have 250mil in the bank instead of 270mil OH NO !!! I won’t be able to pay my electric bill.
Team players my tush.. we fans need to be vocal about getting these bums out of NY or at least stop deadlocking us from making the team better. It’s one thing if they earned it, its another that they are playing like 5million dollar players !!!
So frustrating !!!!!!!!!!
maybe not frustrating but disgusting.
Maybe Hank should pay Arod for a year out of his own pocket since he is the idiot that locked him up at the fans expense. A 10 year old wouldn’t have paid Arod what he did. DUMB & DUMBERER
