FOX plus YES equals what?

News Corporation has an agreement to acquire a 49 percent equity stake in the YES Network. After three years, News Corporation can acquire a stake that takes it to 80 percent. People, of course, are wondering if these FOX people will try to buy the Yankees from the Steinbrenners down the road.

YES also now has a rights agreement to carry Yankees games through 2042.

Here’s a statement from Hal Steinbrenner:

“This transaction underscores the great value we and our partners created in establishing the YES Network and sets the network on the path for even greater achievements in the future.  We are excited to have News Corporation as a partner.  Its stature and acumen in sports broadcasting on a global scale is unmatched.  We look forward to the many opportunities for growth and development that this investment by News Corporation will bring to YES.  The Steinbrenner family expects to have a continuing, long-term ownership stake in the YES Network and we will continue our yearly commitment of fielding a championship caliber team for decades to come.”

Here’s a statement from YES CEO Tracy Dolgin:

“We at YES, along with the New York Yankees and our financial partners Goldman Sachs, NJ Holdings and Providence Equity, had an incredible opportunity to build a network that quickly became – and remains — the number one regional sports network in the country, based on any metric. We were able to accomplish this because we have the greatest sports brand in the world, the New York Yankees, other important programming such as the rejuvenated Brooklyn Nets, the unwavering support of our board and, last but not least, an incredibly talented and dedicated group of employees.

“FOX wrote the book on regional sports networks, and we are excited to partner with FOX and take advantage of this opportunity to build upon our leadership position. In particular, Ray Hopkins (YES Network COO), John Filippelli (YES Network, President of Production and Programming) and I have all previously worked at FOX, and we are eager to renew our working relationships with the company and with many of our friends and former colleagues. At the same time, we are fortunate to continue to benefit from the vision and support of our current ownership. We are particularly thrilled for our valued employees, who will continue with the YES Network and will benefit from the multitude of resources and opportunities that FOX brings to the table. We look forward to having FOX join our winning team.”

Now that Fox basically owns YES I hope we get the games called by Stewie & Brian Griffin next season.

Considering the team Cashman is putting together, that might be the only reason to watch.

Err, I mean be thankful we even have a team to root for!

I wonder what the pitch to Fox was?

Yankees – “Our plan is to let all our old declining players ride off into the sunset while filling holes with other old declining players who only require 1 year contracts!”

Fox – “That sounds like the baseball version of CSI! We’re in if you can put David Caruso in RF!”

Yankees – “Does Caruso hit left handed?”

  5. Mondoas November 20th, 2012 at 12:30 pm

Just a matter of time before FOX owns the Yankees!!

    He costs too much

Does this money go to the Yankees or did NewsCorp just buy out some other investors? If it goes to the Yankees then I don’t want to hear a damn thing about $189 mil any more.

  12. Duh Innings II November 20th, 2012 at 12:46 pm

FOX, the corporation which promoted nothing but non-stop race-baiting, racism, and just pure hatred towards President Barack Obama throughout the election season through their tv network, and still continues to bash him in their perpetual WAAAAAA ROMNEY LOST!!!! lament. Watch them cry about Obama winning for the next four years.

The corportation which employs Bill O’Reilly who said it’s not “traditional” (code for WHITE, NOT AS WHITE AS I’D LIKE IT TO BE, and NOT WHITE ENOUGH TO DEFEAT BARACK OBAMA) America anymore and employs Sean Hannity who says he “just doesn’t like black people”.

    FOX is a racist corporation.

This is who YES Network has aligned themselves with.

YES Network ought to be ashamed of themselves for partnering up with a business like this.

‘Thing is, I’m not letting FOX keep me from enjoying the Yankees, but I will draw the line if they buy the Yankees. If they buy the Yankees, I will no longer support the Yankees. I will not give my money to a team owned by racists, hatemongers, and fearmongers to take them over.

Oh you’re right.. but Swish has a lot of tools those other guys dont. He plays two positions (fairly well, at that), hits for power, and is a switch hitter. You just don’t find a lot of guys like that. For a team like the Phillies, he’d be a great solution and wouldn’t cost you prospects.

The YES Network also announced a media rights agreement that will keep Yankees baseball on the YES Network through 2042.

If this 2042 deal precludes the Yankees from increasing the amount of money they can get for the TV rights then its such a dumb deal (pending learning the terms). The Yankees already get below market for the TV rights to themselves so the steins can get more un-shared profit from YES.

Different market. Bourne and Upton are CF and Swisher is a corner guy. Plus Swisher is a middle of the order bat for a lot of teams, and Upton should not be for most teams, and Bourne is a leadoff guy.

Probably not but you may not need a ton more….it just depends on what prospects youd have to give in each deal….you might could give Nova or Phelps to Arizona and then prospects to Cleveland…..I dunno….the specifics are hard but if Arizona has to have a SS in the deal…..and Cabrera is available the. But in this case its paying a full time player to back up, which is like the Yankees ideal situation. Most backups are terrible, and the Yankees knew/know they are going to need to rest their infield more AND they have a guy named Robinson Cano who is going to fly away on the free agent market.

You don’t pay Ramiro Pena who will play 20-30 games a lot of money, but if you sign a guy that you can reliably run out there it is worth it. That isn’t even including any trade value he may have once he is signed.

Chavez played like 60 games at 3B last year…

That’s only because Gardner went down for the entire year, which moved Ibanez to OF, which opened up DH vs rhp, which meant Arod to DH and Chavez 3B. Arod DH’d more than he needed to simply because there was an opening.

  102. Shame Spencer November 20th, 2012 at 2:25 pm

    ————————-

Three things screwed up the Yankee plans last year:

    Injury to Romine
    Injury to Gardner
    stone hands of Nunez

With Gardner going down, Ibanez had to play everyday in LF. As a result the Yankees needed a DH; they would’ve loved to use both Alex and Jeter there, but because Nunez couldn’t field they ended up having to keep Jeter in the field because of the offensive drop that would come from putting Jayson Nix there.

  104. jacksquat November 20th, 2012 at 2:32 pm

Shame, did you intentionally or unintentionally completely ignore what I said? DH was opened because of Gardner, so Chavez was either going to DH or play 3B. It was simply a matter of opportunity. We’ll never know how many games Arod could have played at 3B.

Ibanez is probably going to be resigned to be the DH vs rhp again, if there is no OF injury, that’s where he will be. Are you saying then that Arod will just sit on the bench for 60 games? Not happening.

I’m serious. I think they’re going to figure that he was ok in LF (which he really wasn’t) and it’s easier to play RF in the stadium than LF so they will go with him out there.

  112. Shame Spencer November 20th, 2012 at 2:45 pm

They sat Arod in the playoffs, who cares how much he wants to effing play…

When you have the chance to add a younger player that is athletic and a proven talent in another league, you do it. Especially when you have two guys over 35 on the left side of your INF and that young, athletic dude is a SS!! The absolute worst that could have happened was they really couldn’t find the playing time for him they thought they could and had to trade him. That is the worst that could have happened. (Which would have been awesome for us, btw.)

Doing stuff like this takes foresight though, which the Yankees don’t have any of.

Alex is going into his age 37 year in 2013. Chipper started 131 games at 3B in his age 37 year (went down in years after that though).

Hey, if they want to get Headley and make Alex the full time DH, I’m all for it, just don’t trade the whole farm, he only has 2 years left until he is a free agent.

  129. Shame Spencer November 20th, 2012 at 3:14 pm

This is a ridiculous conversation… Arod can just sit! Ibanez doesn’t need to be the DH in EVERY game against RHP (aka, most of them), so he can just sit sometimes too! There are a hundred different ways to construct a lineup. Thats how Lohud started a game called Guess the Lineup, because Girardi can mix and match to his heart’s content!

I wouldn’t expect a guy like Arod, who for two seasons now has not cracked 100 games at 3B, to play more than 100 games at 3B next year. It stands to reason you’d like to prepare by having someone decent around to fill in for roughly 60 games per year at 3B. Jeter is in a similar situation in that you don’t really want him playing 162 games at SS. In 2012, Jeter DH’d 25 times. So.. you’d probably want someone to be able to cover at minimum 25 games at SS.

Total, in just 2012, you have 85 games where a guy that could play the left INF roles would have been really really awesome. It was dumb to low-ball a solid, young option who could have handled the role long term in order to keep on a guy like Chavez, whom I like very much but has his own injury issues and is clearly not a long term solution to our aging INF.

Agree with the general sentiment that the team is headed in completely the wrong direction. I appreciate all of the good posters on here constantly giving me some good reading to do at work. I hope we’re wrong and the Yanks pull it together, I would absolutely hate to see Jeter/Mo/Pettitte end their careers on a non-competitive Yankee team. The Yanks should have been planning for this $189 mess years ago if they were serious about it. I fear the next few years are really going to be down years based on the combination of age, decline, little help from the minors, $189M, and current bad contracts. I just hope they don’t side with the quick fix in trading away the future of the team (Heathcotte, Williams, Sanchez, Etc…)… I’ll also say, I don’t mind News-Corp buying this stake in YES (not terribly thrilled with it either) but if they did end up buying a majority stake in the Yanks down the road I would with out question no longer support the team.

  131. Shame Spencer November 20th, 2012 at 3:15 pm

There were a host of things that led to where the Yankees are….. The Steinbrenner boys were relative new to the game when Arod opted out and Boras perhaps used their inexperience against them to sign that new deal…..then in 2008 they missed the playoffs and Hal and co wanted to be sure they didn’t risk the brand and went out and spent a ton to get them back on top……

I can’t fault them too much for those decision because of the circumstances and becaus the new CBA didn’t exist yet…..I think the issue is trying to get under this cap without having time to prepare for it…..it’s going to be difficult until some of the bad money expires or until they can move it……

Yankees, I have a plan. Try to get under the cap in a few years when AROD is off the books. Until then, don’t ruin your brand.

Chip suggested earlier a bad team wouldn’t reduce rating burst would only decrease attendance. I disagree. Their are many things to watch on TV and many options outside of the house. I have spent many a night watching a game when others in the family would have me do otherwise. If the team is no good, my incentive is removed.

Agreed – he would do better selling off the whole than pieces. No prospective owner is going to want the Yankees without a stake in YES. Which is why it stands to reason that Fox, through this purchase, is positioning themselves as the only viable buyer of the Yankees should the Steinbrenners decide to sell.

  155. blake November 20th, 2012 at 3:38 pm

The Yankees could be in a lot better position to actually get under the cap by 2015 because by then Jeter’s contract will be up and also they should have a lot better handle on what they have with their prospects……if a few of those guys hit then they very well may be able to get down below 189 and be very good still……

I agree to some extent. If there’s a hard budget, which there seems to be, I can’t hate Cash that much for not signing Nakajima I guess.

I think a big part of the Cash hate was brought on by Brian himself though, who was so vocal about building from within in ’06. If Hal was around at the time (stands to reason he was) and wanted to implement a budget, I too would be like: Okay Brian, let’s see the results of these last 6 years that you’ve been touting the farm.

Again.. I do agree and I think Cash is a bit strapped here. He has no wiggle room. But some of that is his own fault. Not all.. but some.

I can’t fault them too much for those decision because of the circumstances and becaus the new CBA didn’t exist yet…..I think the issue is trying to get under this cap without having time to prepare for it…..it’s going to be difficult until some of the bad money expires or until they can move it……
    —————-

Part of what got the Yankees here is like you said, the other part is that they were slow to adjust to a changing landscape. As baseball revenues grew teams started locking up their good young players to team friendly contracts. The result is that the Yankees couldn’t do what the Yankees have done since 1994, find a struggling team with a good player and get that player in a salary dump deal. 10 or 15 years ago if the Yankees wanted King Felix or Justin Upton they could go out and get them, but GMs instead started locking those guys into long term team friendly contracts that kept their salaries from getting out of whack through arbitration so the motivation for these teams to deal those players went away. Additionally, the process culled the free agent ranks. Instead of having huge groups of talented free agents hit the market you get one or two high quality guys and then a lot of guys with red flags.

The Yankees though continued to sign free agents, give away high draft picks – not sign the draft picks they had and straddle the fence when it came to signing young international free agents. The result, you have a farm system with little or no upper level talent and an aging roster.

Any other organization and they would be talking about a three or four year plan with the prospects that they’ve started to develop now that they’ve accepted the current realities of the game – but that’s not the Yankee way. So instead of having a firm plan we have an organization that tells everyone it wants to get younger and less expensive but that also doesn’t trust the players coming through its farm system so they deal them off for “established” players like Granderson or Pineda.

It wasn’t that Alex had to DH because Ibanez went to the field, it was because Ibanez went to the field there was an opening at DH.

The idea would have been to use both Jeter and Alex there but the fact that Eduardo Nunez was awful kept Jeter at SS. So that meant Chavez or Alex at DH and Chavez is the superior defensive player.

So over the same length of time the Angels are likely to make more (as they will get to renegotiate sooner). Perplexing if you’re the Yankees owner, great if you own a stake in YES. Chip – Chavez had better numbers vs. RHP this year. Is it possible he could have DHed? In an ideal world, does Arod have to be the DH….. because there is an opening there? Or would it stand to reason the plan was to have him rest more this year and Gardner had nothing to do with how much Arod DHed?

I just don’t get how you guys draw the conclusion that because Gardner got injured, opening up the DH spot, that Alex then had to just be the DH. It’s way more likely the plan was to DH him quite a bit this year.

  180. Shame Spencer November 20th, 2012 at 4:07 pm

No I agree – and that’s part of why they moved Montero – because they couldn’t have a full time DH because they needed it to be open for guys like Alex.

    ——————-

Right… because theoretically, by the logic applied to that move, the plan was to give Alex at least, what?, 1/3 of his time at DH? I think that’s reasonable.

And also by that logic, since I believe it was also discussed that Jeter would need a rest by being at DH, you would think you could come up with playing time for someone to cover SS and 3B without trying that hard. Wouldn’t you??

A better question might be: If Gardner stays healthy does that mean you never DH Arod or Jeter???? Just because you ‘have’ a DH already? Or do you rest them anyway and treat Ibanez like a bench player?

  185. jacksquat November 20th, 2012 at 4:14 pm

    Right… right.

So we agree Arod would have seen DH time with or without Gardner being injured..? Because.. the whole point of even having Chavez is predicated around resting Arod.

My long-winded point: It seems like the crux of the argument against Nakajima was we couldn’t have predicted how much playing time he would get. I think that’s lie-telling. Boom.

  194. Shame Spencer November 20th, 2012 at 4:28 pm

I’m telling you guys.. Andy is just waiting on Kuroda. Once he knows what Mo and Kuroda are making, he’ll decide how much he’s worth.

It is annoying things can’t just get done with Mo, but I’m more concerned about what’s taking so long on Kuroda……… if he takes his time deciding it’s going to push negotiations with Andy back that much farther and we can’t do two things at once because these are the new JLo Yankees.

  195. Nick in SF November 20th, 2012 at 4:28 pm

Shame, I came in late to this polite discussion, so I may be missing context, but… did you not wager with someone that Arod would start over 100 games at 3B this past season? So before the season you thought he’d be playing at 3B a lot, right?

I think the plan was to have Ibanez and Jones be the DH a lot of the time with some DH days also going to Arod and Jeter and perhaps Chavez, etc. But when Gardner went down and ended up missing most of the season, suddenly Ibanez and Jones were in LF far more often than was hoped for. So with those guys in the field, the DH spot was opened up more often for others.

So, let’s say that Gardner was healthy all year and let’s say that Arod doesn’t get plunked by Felix. He probably plays 3B at a higher rate than he did in reality. Probably.

  196. Shame Spencer November 20th, 2012 at 4:29 pm

Nick – Yes! I bet he would play at least 100 games at 3B. This discussion though, is based on that very prediction!! So I’m glad you brought it up. Because even optimistically, if he’s playing 100 games at 3B, someone has to play 60 games at 3B.

The discussion we’re having now assumes that Arod would be playing well over 100 games at 3B if Gardner doesn’t go down because he won’t be ‘needed’ at DH. I disagree that there was ever an intention of playing Arod at any more than 100 games at 3B this season (max I guessed in my side bet was 110, I knew he wouldn’t go more than that, I was just hoping he wouldn’t go less than 100…. which he did. That assh*le.).

Who is telling the lie? The Yankees or jacksquat/chip? Or are they all lying?

Incidentally, if you’re a fan of — or just curious about — the New Zealand indie rock/punk scene of the 1980′s (and if you’re not, maybe you should be) then an appropriate place to start might be the Alpaca Brothers’ original composition “The Lie” on the great Flying Nun label.

    ___

I don’t know why people worry about that with the Yankees.
How often do the Yankees pull a Marlins or a Red Sox and just start trading people?

I’d be very happy if they locked Kuroda up for 2 years and had him and CC set at the front. I’d also consider trying to extend Hughes now to some sort of 3 year deal… Then worry about Pettitte, Nova, Pineda, Phelps and anyone else they may decide they have interest in….

  212. Yankee Trader November 20th, 2012 at 4:58 pm

    Good afternoon-

ARod 100 games at 3B. 89 in 2011, 81 in 2012. has 19 games on turf just in AL East. Shame-If he finds the elixir of youth that reverses injuries, without getting caught, you might win that bet.

Barajas at catcher. Isn’t he one of the worst catchers at throwing out base runners?

Nakajima was the Yankees for the taking last year. Ironic that now he might be a DBack and then they might not trade Upton.

  213. MTU November 20th, 2012 at 5:00 pm

A SS is not the only reason the D’backs would like to move Upton.

The owner is not happy with him and said as much, in public, last season.

His days there would appear to be numbered.

They’ll just fill a different need when they trade him.

  214. Shame Spencer November 20th, 2012 at 5:00 pm

    Jerkface November 20th, 2012 at 4:48 pm

So the point of all this is to prove that the Yanks lied in some way? They told lies? Lied about stuff?

I think Shame is accusing the people in this argument of lie telling based on their positions about Nakajima’s potential playing time

    ————-

Yeah this has nothing to do with the Yankees lying about anything. They’re cheap, they acted as such. That’s fine. This could have been a one stone, two birds situation but I wouldnt expect them to have foresight (I almost typed foreskin. Really.).

It’s about how people are saying that there was not only no playing time for him.. and then evolved into a discussion about people trying to tell me Arod was only DHing because Gardner got hurt which sort of implies there was in no way a plan to rest Arod in that role anyway (even though the whole Montero trade was based on the rotating DH and the fact that Arod played like 80 games at 3B the year before).

  215. blake November 20th, 2012 at 5:01 pm

I don’t think they’d give Kuroda 2 years…..he’s good but he’s 38 and if they committed 13+ million to him for 2014 and he declined then that would be pretty problematic

  216. ac1 November 20th, 2012 at 5:01 pm

I made the bet for 2012 and was on the exact perfect pace until he got hit in the hand… And no, I’ll never bet on him playing 100 games at 3B again because it’s just highly unlikely.

And ‘ironic’ is a good word to use… better than anyone I would have come up with which would have needed a lot of symbols to not get caught in the filter.

Nick – No one was accused of lie-telling: “My long-winded point: It seems like the crux of the argument against Nakajima was we couldn’t have predicted how much playing time he would get. I think that’s lie-telling. Boom.”

You could absolutely, based on what we know of both Arod and Jeter, have predicted/allotted a fair amount of playing time to Nakajima.

But now he is the Dbacks problem and we have Nunez and Chavez (maybe)… so that’s… awesome.

I hope the plan is Nix and Adams, tbh.

Kuroda returning to the Yankees was no surprise. As soon as unnamed sources, the always unidentfied “friends” of a ballplayer, start leaking information about which team a player wants to play for, take the bet it’s the exact opposite. A supposed friend leaking information that would undermine his negotiating position with the West Coast teams by letting them know he doesn’t want to pitch for the Yankees? With friends like that….

In reality, the friends (who was probably Kuroda’s agent) was trying to drive up the Yankees price.

You evolved it! I was only talking about why Arod DH’d so much, and you tried to pull me into the Nakajima conspiracy!

If Gardner hadn’t been injured, Arod would have DH’d less and would have easily played over 100 games at 3B. You can blame the Yankees’ poor outfield planning for losing your bet.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

The problem is something that too few folks are speaking intelligently about. I am very happy I stumbled across this during my hunt for something relating to this.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
