Happy Thanksgiving/CC to be honored

Posted by: Brian Heyman - Posted in Misc on Nov 22, 2012 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

I just want to wish you all a great Thanksgiving. Thanks for being here with us year-round.

I’m off to a family gathering today, but first here’s a charity-related item I didn’t get to from the other day.

CC Sabathia is going to be honored for his mound and community work at the Thurman Munson Awards Dinner on Feb. 5 at the Grand Hyatt in Manhattan.
Sabathia and his wife Amber have their “PitCCh In Foundation,” doing good things for inner-city kids.
The Mets’ Ike Davis is also going to be honored. His dad, Ron, pitched for the Yankees and was a teammate of Munson’s.
“When I told my dad that I was being honored at the Thurman Munson Dinner, he was thrilled,” Davis said. “My dad and Thurman played together for two years and he always told me he was the fiercest competitor he ever played with during his career.
“My dad always told me that no one wanted to win more than Thurman Munson. I can’t tell you how much I am looking forward to meeting his family.”
Munson’s widow, Diana, always attends. The dinner benefits the AHRC New York City Foundation, meant to help those with developmental or intellectual disabilities.
Anyone interested in more info or tickets should call 212-249-6188.

The smell of bacon permeating through my place forced my hand.. I had to go get a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich.

It is very important to stretch out your stomach the morning of Thanksgiving. Too many people overlook this. They don’t eat all day and when the antipast comes out they attack like hungry wolves… by the bird comes out they can’t eat another bite. Amateurs.

  5. blake November 22nd, 2012 at 10:14 am

Axisa guesses that Martin will get 3 years and between 24-30 million ….which I agree with…..the Yankees simply cannot do a deal like that if the seriously plan to get their payroll down in the 170′s by 2014

  8. ron November 22nd, 2012 at 10:22 am

    Happy tg to all.

    Imo,it is all about value.

Longoria is a fantastic value for the rays, wich allows premium production,at a premium position for far below market value.
What that does is allows the rays to spend more than they otherwise would be able to,elsewhere.
The yankees wait for players to become a maximum expense, and sign them way past their expiration dates.
Cano is a great player, but he loses his value at 23 million til he is 37-40 yrs old, because you have to get the production from him, because of his salary.

This is why hughes should be extended for 5/40-45,because we have witnessed what a 3.5 era pitcher like hughes will get paid through the normal seniority process, and arbitration alone, and it is more than 8-10 million a year, and hughes is going to get better.

Two choices in this new cba enviroment.Extend him to a team friendly deal,or trade him.
A deal that is fair to both.
    Cano also,imo.
There is more value in trading cano, and reeping the prospect/player/financial rewards.
Keep in mind,it is not only the players we get in return,it is the 23 million a year savings in addition.

So if we traded cano,we get a few top prospects at league minimum, and we have 20 + million to replace his production at 2b.
    It is a no brainer.

  9. jacksquat November 22nd, 2012 at 10:25 am

Hughes is not a 3.5 ERA pitcher, wasn’t even in the second half of 2012.

I’m against locking Hughes up. He could improve in 2013 but I wouldn’t bet a 4 year deal on it, and I don’t believe in locking up someone for the #4 spot in the rotation.

  10. DONNYBROOK November 22nd, 2012 at 10:33 am

This is what makes the Yankees soooo Great. Stories about Yankee Legends, handed down, 40+ yrs after-the-fact. It is also commendable and appreciated, that the companions of these great players, grace us with their continued presence and participation in Yankee related events.
Though the Yankees currently lay in fallow, their collegiate counterpart awaits an Epic Game. The magnitude of which mirrors Game 4 of the “96″ World Series. Go Notre Dame. A dynasty awaits your call.

  11. blake November 22nd, 2012 at 10:35 am

Even if Hughes is what he’s been the two years he’s been healthy….a 4ish Era, 1.2ish WHip, 190 innings and 150 K guy…..then that’s well worth a deal around 4/32. That’s a solid mid rotation guy who can eat innings and I think that’s what Hughes will be most years and that he will pitch better than that at times……maybe Im dead wrong but I really liked what I saw from him last year

  12. Against All Odds November 22nd, 2012 at 10:39 am

I wonder if Pineda and the Bs being injured have changed the way the Yankees look at Hughes. Let’s say Pineda didn’t get injured and Manny had a big season in the mL would that have made Hughes expendable. I get the feeling the Yankees view their starters as interchangeable parts. When one gets expensive or struggles then someone else is going to have to step in.

    ——————–

It really all depends on the price.. I think if they could get him for a $7 million AAV they’d be crazy not to do it because of the uncertainty of the rotation over the following years where the budget will be key. That being said… I’m also not opposed to using him to get something else we need. Lots of variables.

  14. yankee21 November 22nd, 2012 at 10:45 am

ron, very good points, it would be nice if the front office actually showed a modicum of pro-activity in terms of acquisitions, trades and contracts.

IMO Cashman and the brass exemplify more of reactive approach to just about everything and it undermines NY’ ability to successfully navigate through their self mandated cost slashing bent they are insisting upon.

  15. ron November 22nd, 2012 at 10:45 am

The hardest thing to do in baseball is predict the future of a player, but imo, hughes is going to be worth more than 7,or 8 million a year.

Maybe not a lot more, but if you give him 8,or 9 million, who knows, maybe he takes 7.5,we prevent having to overpay.

Look at cano, and what not extending him is going to cost us,if we could of extended him at all.
Look at what longoria would of cost the rays.

Twice as much,or more than the peanuts he is getting now because when a player is unaware of his worth, and has not had a few great years,it is the time to lock them up.

Look around the league, and see what pitchers that are not even as good as hughes are getting paid, just by service time.
The worst case scenario is,overpaying hughes by only a few million, instead of 10-15 million like arod, etc…
But if you wait,it might cost a lot more in the future.

Maybe trading hughes for a nice bat is the best thing to do.
Maybe he turns into a number 1,or two pitcher that is worth 18 million a year,or more making only 8-9 million by extending him.
He is making what 3.2 million now?
In arbitration,he will get a little more, and if he has a slightly better, more consistant year in 2013,he will get paid not to far from the 8-9 million i am suggesting.
We are talking about a 26 year old pitcher with 635 major league innings under his belt, not a 1000 inning pitcher.
He is going to get better.Maybe much better.

  16. Shame Spencer November 22nd, 2012 at 10:48 am

Pineda …. man, if he can get going this year that would be such a lift for our team.

Anything in that range would be a stellar deal. Also a trade-able one.

That deal for Guthrie was an eye opener.. I can’t imagine Hughes commanding less on the open market.

  19. ron November 22nd, 2012 at 10:51 am

    yankee 21

    Very true.
    Reactionary.

You can’t wait for every player to become max value, and sign them past 35 year old.
This is why the yankees have no wiggle room, and can’t sign a decent player now.
I’d be much more excited if we traded cano for some top prospects, and signed, just a good 2b,and we’d still have 10-13 million leftover, after getting 2-3 top prospects.

    That is how to build a winning team,not by signing a 20 million dollar player for 23 million a year,and 6 years,minimum.

Hughes was 4.19 in 2010 and 4.23 in 2012, ERA+’s of 103 and 99. Those types of pitchers are not hard to find and I see no reason to lock it up unless he’s very cheap, like you are buying out arb years cheap. I wouldn’t pay 8 or 10+ per year, you can get pitchers like him every offseason. If you want to lock him up for that you are basically hoping he will get better.

  22. DONNYBROOK November 22nd, 2012 at 10:55 am

AFTER signing Pettitte, I would deal any 2 of Hughes\Nova\Phelps. To me, Phelps has a mental toughness that Hughes does Not, making Phelps the guy you wanna hang onto of the 3. The Winter Meetings will tell-the-tale. If Hughes issa Yankee After the Winter Meetings, he will be a Yankee for the entire 2013 Season, and then allowed to walk. The only caveat would be if the Yanks were totally outta the playoff picture at the trade deadline. Then, the Yanks would look to deal him.

The steelers in the nfl do it the best.
In their system, they always fill a vacant hole, after getting the best years out of a player, then saying bye bye, just before having to pay them more than they are wort

Lol I don’t know if he was headed to the pen but he was definitely on the fence. Plus we all forget how he was a little uneasy about Andy coming back. But in the end it worked out he made every start and won 16 games.

  28. jacksquat November 22nd, 2012 at 11:02 am

Guthrie was overpaid and widely regarded as a not smart signing by the Royals.

  29. jacksquat November 22nd, 2012 at 11:03 am

But if the Royals like pitchers like that, maybe the Yanks should look into trading them Hughes…

  30. blake November 22nd, 2012 at 11:04 am

“Hughes was 4.19 in 2010 and 4.23 in 2012, ERA+’s of 103 and 99. Those types of pitchers are not hard to find and I see no reason to lock it up unless he’s very cheap”

I think they are harder to find than you do ….especially if they are 27 years old…..I also think ERA+ undervalues Hughes as does FIP

  31. blake November 22nd, 2012 at 11:05 am

The contract for Guthrie wasn’t that terrible…..it was that he really does nothing to address their needs..

  32. ron November 22nd, 2012 at 11:07 am

Not easy getting a 26 year old pitcher for what you are suggesting that has a chance to get much better.
Maybe a 35 year old garcia that you know simply won’t get better.
That is the difference here, and only that.
Hughes has only 635 innings in the majors, and regardless of ones opinion, that is not a lot,and pitchers are still growing with that little amount of innings under their belt.
Look, hughes might not get better, but paying him 8 or 9 million a year, with a chance he gets much better, imo is not a big risk.

Getting a decent bat in a trade is not out of the question, but not sure what hughes gets you.

  33. MTU November 22nd, 2012 at 11:08 am

Kuroda and Pettitte inked would give the Yankees some options.

It’s interesting to me that many seem to treat Hughes, Nova, and Phelps like they were Thanksgiving leftovers.

I’d be OK with trading one of them as part of a package to obtain a young, high-quality player to fill a need.

But I sure as sh*t wouldn’t let one fo them go for a rental, or for a mediocre or marginal improvement.

IMO guys like them are more valuable than they are given credit for, and they may yet get better.

Don’t just give them away. i hope the Yankees won’t.

    ;

  34. Shame Spencer November 22nd, 2012 at 11:10 am

But squat, it doesn’t matter if the deal wasn’t smart.. it still sets the market. It’s like the Pujols deal. No one thinks that’s a smart deal… but it won’t stop someone from giving Robbie $200 million.

  35. Shame Spencer November 22nd, 2012 at 11:11 am

FTR, I do agree the deal wasn’t a good one lol. Just trying to be realistic because if Hughes manages another 16-18 win season, someone is going to offer him more than a $8.34 AAV.

And the fact that he pitches in the AL East is gonna help him.

  36. Shame Spencer November 22nd, 2012 at 11:13 am

The thing about locking Phil up is it doesn’t stop you from considering moving him… if they could get him to agree to a decent AAV deal, we might be able to trade him for more value than he has right now.

  37. blake November 22nd, 2012 at 11:15 am

I’m very bullish on Hughes. Have been since the first time I seen him pitch in AAA.

It seems like since his call up, he’s never had an extended stretch where he has been able to put everything together. Injuries and other issues have derailed him. If he can stay healthy next year he’s going to dominate. So yeah I would extend him early and cheap if possible.

  43. Shame Spencer November 22nd, 2012 at 11:21 am

I am thankful for the fact that Donny is as amazing as ever lol.

Thank you Donny!! Don’t ever change bro.

But yeah.. signing Hughes doesn’t preclude you from trading him. That’s why I think no matter what their plans are, they should try to extend him now. Because it gives them more options down the road. Options on their terms, and not the players’ or markets’ terms.

Shame, the Guthrie deal was not smart and it will not set the market. The Royals have to overpay because they are the Royals. And let’s not compare in any way to Pujols. Different stratosphere.

If you get him for 8 aav then it might be a tradeable contract, I’ll buy that. But I see no reason to lock him up. And I don’t think he would sign for that anyway.

  50. blake November 22nd, 2012 at 11:25 am

Our Family is in too many locations for us all to be together.

Mrs. MTU usually has to work Holidays. This year is the rare exception so we’ll just have a quiet, non-traditional day together.

She loves steak so we’re having BBQ’ed steak, Asparagus, Scalloped potatoes, salad, and grog.

Quality time. I’m thankful for that.

Have a great day AAO. Worse case get drunk and have someone drive you home.

that you have people you love – and who love you in return – with whom to celebrate the day

that you have blessings such that you remember to be thankful for all that you have

that you have a day where any and all Yankee thoughts bring you joy

Happy Thanksgiving to all … Now, to work on that bourbon pecan pie.

My baseball thoughts. Hughes has value and is becoming a more complete pitcher. Not as dominant as we thought he would be, and certainly not an injury-free road. When healthy, he has been a serviceable mid-rotation starter. That said, if the Yanks can’t extend him to a team-friendly deal and they sign Pettitte, I would shop him. Just can’t afford to sign him for 9-10 million per and fit 189. Need those young position players. (OF, 3b, SS).

Happy Thanksgiving, all. Its very quiet here, the bride has gone to Easton, PA to see her latest granddaughter, no turkey aroma wafting through the house, no yams to peel, nothing but the cat and me. We’ll have our turkey and fixins next week when she comes back. My own daughters are scattered across the country, raising families of their own, and I’ve talked with them all. Still, a little kith and kin would be welcome on my favorite holiday.

One bright spot, a pal gave me a couple of pounds of venison, which is, as I type, being converted to chili, which will be a feast unto itself. Still, it’s a strange feeling being alone on Thanksgiving. Happened only once before in sixty-eight years, and I don’t want it to happen again. I envy everyone who’s with family today.

This year, of the 191 players currently eligible for arbitration, approximately 50 are non-tender candidates. Click here to check out my subjective non-tender candidate list from a month ago (many of the listed players have since been cut loose). Decent names who may become free agents next week include Mark Reynolds, Geovany Soto, Ian Stewart, Daric Barton, Ryan Sweeney, Jair Jurrjens, John Lannan, Mike Pelfrey, and Brian Wilson.
    Read more at http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/.....gaz5JTU.99

Names that jump out at me there obviously are Reynolds , Soto , and Jair

If Reynolds gets non tendered then he’d be a real nice add cause he can play 3b…..don’t know if he’d sign on for a part time role though

Good morning all… hope you are surviving the tryptophan poisoning!!!

Seems like things are really quiet on the hot stove. That should change over the next couple of weeks.

I like the idea of taking a flyer on Jair Jurrjens. He was really good in ’09 and ’11… maybe it’s an odd year thing?

Does the Gomes deal ope the door for a run @ Cody Ross. He’s a much better all around player, though his home/away splits are disconcerting.

  137. blake November 23rd, 2012 at 8:21 am

“Does the Gomes deal ope the door for a run @ Cody Ross. He’s a much better all around player, though his home/away splits are disconcerting.”

Ross would be a perfect platoon guy if they either traded for a LH outfielder or brought Ichiro back….the issue would be getting Ross to accept a role where he wouldn’t play every day and working the money out.

Reynolds is an interesting guy if he’s non tendered as a RH power bag that can play 3B…..the issue with him obviously though is that he ks a ton and he had a reverse split last year.

I think with the catching situation the Yankees probably should get the absolute best back up they can and then just hope Romine can handle it……that’s risky but they really can’t afford to give Martin a 3/30 contract if they are gonna stay on budget for 2014…..

  138. 86w183 November 23rd, 2012 at 8:26 am

    Blake —

What would you think about Youkilis as a 1B/3B/DH??

He’s tailed off lately, but his OPS for LHPwas .878 last year and .987 in 2011.

Would seem like a pretty good fit if the $$$ made any sense. And he could really stick it to the Sawx.

  139. blake November 23rd, 2012 at 8:32 am

“What would you think about Youkilis as a 1B/3B/DH??”

If I could get past the fact that its Youkalis…and he’d accept the role then sure…..he’s be great as a RH DH and part time 3b on a one year deal……

  140. blake November 23rd, 2012 at 8:34 am

Youkalis isn’t that old….put him in the right situation and limit his PT so that he can stay healthy and he will probably hit Id say

  141. blake November 23rd, 2012 at 8:36 am

Could a Romine/Soto catching duo be good enough? Certainly would be cheaper than Martin or AJ or Napoli

  142. 86w183 November 23rd, 2012 at 8:56 am

Soto is a great candidate for a bounce back season.

He was .280/.393/.497 just two years ago. Seems like Martin two years ago.

Don’t know what Romine can handle next year. Wish there was a LH bat to share catching duties.

  143. MTU November 23rd, 2012 at 9:11 am

    Morning.

Hope you all had a good Thanksgiving.

Hope you had a good thanksgiving.

Jair does have health issues ….but if he were non tendered then you could potentially get him for cheap and he could be pretty good still if he could ever get healthy…… It’s the kind of stuff Cashman loves to do….take risks for small money

  146. DONNYBROOK November 23rd, 2012 at 9:28 am

You guys keep looking at free agents, when it’s the trade market that should be getting your attention. The Yanks have the chips, and should use them to reach the $189 Mill. Yea, I know about the needing these youngin’s after 2014 in order to maintain that team payroll, but much like a real ball game, you gotta tie, Before you can win. Let’s get to $189 by dealing Nunez, Nova, Hughes, Phelps, AND Cano, then see what we got and go from there. The Yankees should get a very good return on these players, so they will be inna good position both on-the-field, and on-the-ledger, to move forward. Going with the currently available free agent class, issa return to that debacle we saw when George converted the Yankees into the Bronx Burners. DISASTER.

  147. 86w183 November 23rd, 2012 at 9:44 am

    Ok Donny I’ll bite.

Whatcha think you can get for Nunez/Nova, Hughes, Phelps and Cano?

If your eyes were truly focused on $ 189 M you wouldn’t want to move Nova, Phelps or Nunez because they are the Yanks’ best hopes for inexpensive productivity.

We’re talking about one-year options for 2013 to fill some of the holes on the current roster. If they wanted to ease into $ 189 they could have declined Granderson’s option and not signed Kuroda. I think it’s clear the Yanks are going to have a similar payroll in 2013 with a $ 30-40 M cutback in ’14.

If that’s the plan, they need to speed up the development of Austin, Mesa, Adams and Sanchez and possibly others to plus in 2-4 rookies. those guys should all play every say in Scranton.

  148. Jerkface November 23rd, 2012 at 9:55 am

Unless you plan on Jeter opting out & then not re-signing him Nunez is expendable.

  149. dan l November 23rd, 2012 at 10:03 am

The big question for the Yankees is what can they get for Cano? If they can get a nice return on him they should trade him.

  150. blake November 23rd, 2012 at 10:18 am

    JF,

Any of the non tender candidates interest you?

  151. Jerkface November 23rd, 2012 at 10:25 am

Any of the non tender candidates interest you?

Brian Wilson, maybe. Another team may pay him more to close, and he may not want to sign with the Yankees because of his beard. Ian Stewart looks cooked, but I could see Cashman picking him up since he can play 3B & 2B and he is a left handed. Pelfrey on a cheap 1 year deal + option for 2014 as he recovers from TJS could be a pretty good insurance move. Soto as a cheap catching option.

I don’t think Reynolds is going to be non-tendered. They declined his option because it was too expensive, but they still had control over him. I think they take him to arbitration with a slight raise over last year.

  152. Cashmoney November 23rd, 2012 at 10:31 am

jerk, very good point on bargain player and FA going forward. I think teams are smarter in identifying undervalued assets and also have the money to make modest investments. Scouting, evaluations and projections has become a even more a focal point when it comes to maintaining the welfare of an organization.

  153. blake November 23rd, 2012 at 10:33 am

Yea ….I think Wilson gets a closing gig or stays in SF at a cheaper rate….Jair is a decent risk if he’s cheap….I think the Os probably keep Reynolds as well but Id have Interest if he was non tendered

  154. Cashmoney November 23rd, 2012 at 10:35 am

asides from the big ticket items… what you looks at is a pool of players that is never was and has been. Guys like a Soto, Braden is all about investing short term and at min price and hope
they reached their potential from yonder years.

  155. blake November 23rd, 2012 at 10:50 am

Cashman loves taking risks on cheap guys….. There are some interesting names if they do get non tendered…..I bet he signs at least one or two

  156. DONNYBROOK November 23rd, 2012 at 11:47 am

Reynolds value climbed in 2012 because the O’s stuck him at 1B, and he did well defensively there. The Yanks have No need for a 1B, and Reynolds at 3B is an absolute Butcher. Reynolds in pinstripes? NOPE

  157. blake November 23rd, 2012 at 12:25 pm

Reynolds value hasn’t climbed or he wouldn’t be a non tender candidate to begin with…..the Yanks need a RH compliment to whoever they get to DH and the fact that Reynolds can also play 3B at least a little makes him interesting if he was non tendered and if the price was right.

  158. mklunce86 December 4th, 2012 at 3:25 pm

I love hearing about professional sports players giving back to the community and especially children that need it. CC Sabathia is setting a great example for all his teammates and sharing this honor with a Mets player also shows how important this is to both competitors. This also reflects well on the Yankee’s as an organization which is always important. It can always help an organization to help the community and it strengthens the ties with the New York community. I also like that the dinner will also benefit a charity as this also helps the community and will reward those who need it instead of just the people who can afford the tickets to the dinner.

Today, I went to the beach front with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!
