Phillies catcher Ruiz suspended for positive amphetamine test
One of my absolute favorite guys I ever covered in the minor leagues. I wasn’t happy to see this one, but here’s the announcement from Major League Baseball.
The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that Philadelphia Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz has received a 25-game suspension without pay after testing positive for an Amphetamine in violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
The suspension of Ruiz is effective at the start of the 2013 regular season. He will be eligible to participate in Spring Training, including in Spring Training games.

He doesn’t really play GG defense

“[Martin has a] Huge impact on the pitching staff,” said the scout, who requested anonymity because he’s not authorized to speak about another organization’s player. “He makes all the starters use all their stuff. He has those guys believing they can throw any pitch in any count. He’s got a great setup behind the plate, so the umpires get a good view. He blocks balls in the dirt and encourages, no, demands guys throw their off-speed stuff down so hitters chase…”
…The scout also praised Martin for his ability to help Yankee pitchers make in-game adjustments: “I see a guy who’s way more than a catcher who’s reading the scouting report and putting down fingers.
It baffoles me someone as smart as A-Rod can’t figure out how to adjust to his existing skills. Jeter fixed himself last year, A-Rid should be able to also. It’s about recognizing pitches, shortening the swing and making contact. Forget the 40HRs. I think it would be great if A-Rod could hit 20HR/80-100RBI and hit .280+.

True or not, you CANNOT assign 10 Mil over the next 4 years, particularly 2014 and 2015 to Martin with Sanchez, Romine, Murphy, etc in the pipeline….
Am I the only one sick of bringing the same team back every year? Kuroda, Andy, MO, Martin, great. ARod isn’t going anywhere. Cano/Tex/Jeter will be back. Ichiro will probably be back and did nothing in the playoffs. Ibanez is 40. Swisher will be replaced by some average player.
It’s the same damn team every year

Martin is a pretty good defender IMO….not gold glove caliber but feel free to go off on one of your crazy tangents

suggestions on what can reasonably be changed?
Ruiz had a career year on Ampetamines…..Mantle, mays, Aaron all have admitted to taking them…..the horror….records tainted
@Ken_Rosenthal
Not good: #Phillies’ Carlos Ruiz suspended for first 25 games of next season after testing positive for amphetamines.

The scout = Martin’s mother

“We are disappointed by the news of this violation of the program.” – @Phillies statement on Carlos Ruiz suspension
Huh?
@JSalisburyCSN: Suspension means Ruiz tested positive for amphetamines once before. Second positive carries suspension, first does not and is kept private
I would take me over any anonymous scout
Oh, I missed that. I thought that was Ruiz’s statement. Now I get it.
It’s still a clunky statement.
@Ken_Rosenthal
Ruiz suspended 25 games instead of 50 because discipline is not same for stimulants as it is for steroids. This was his second positive test
I don’t understand the point of being an anonymous scout. Being an anonymous source is one thing.. an anonymous scout is probably up to no good: http://imgace.com/wp-content/u.....scouts.jpg
So should HOFers who took amphetamines (most of them) get half the scrutiny that steroid users do?
@JimBowdenESPNxm: Los Angeles Dodgers are considered the front runner for Zack Greinke according to source with knowledge of the negotiations…. but NOT over
Of course
Heyman: Yankees believed to have interest in Shane Victorino

i like the switch hitters, but not long term and not for the money he wants….
I can’t see how Adderall can help a baseball player out that much but I’d like to hear opinions.
I couldn’t even understand how it helped college students.. it would help them stay up so they could procrastinate on facebook all night..
@Ken_Rosenthal
I am quite tired of quoting statements from teams saying they “support” the drug program and are “disappointed” in players who violate it.
@Ken_Rosenthal
I am also quite tired of quoting players who apologize in their own canned statements. Not picking on Ruiz. The whole thing is just old.
@Ken_Rosenthal
Folks, I know both sides really can’t say anything else. It’s just ridiculous already.
Kenny goin cray cray!

That Ruiz is a BUC without the drugs…. /cashman’d

jmills that an odd comment. I think your Jays will beat my Yankees in 2013 unless Mr. Cashman has something up his sleeve.

Hi comet
. I’m guessing he has a lot of hair up his sleeve, or at least the players he’ll be acquiring have a lot of hair up theirs. Hairy monsters, and all that.
MLB gave 105 players therapeutic use exemptions for the same type of amphetamine that Ruiz was suspended for using. Ruiz just needed a better doctors note.

Lol!

Or Cashman trying to qualify that 4/40. I wouldn’t be surprised. However, we know that scout isn’t CC…
Alex did give us a .848 OPS vs. RHP in 2011. I am going to be optimistic that he hits righties better in 2013.
J-Ram actually pitched 11/20 and 11/25. Good to see: http://mlb.mlb.com/milb/stats/.....pid=542432
If Cash was into his “Mike Fast phase” of framing a couple of years ago, he could have kept framer numero uno, Jose Molina, on the cheap, and paired him with a hairy beast for some pop. Molina’s .680 OPS vs. RHP is 37 points better than Russie’s at only 1.5 mil for Josie.
