Miley named Manager of the Year by Baseball America
Well deserved honor for Yankees Triple-A manager Dave Miley. Here’s the announcement from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (please note that the Mantle pun is not mine!).
MOOSIC, Pa. – Ironic that the manager of the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate might just need a bigger, “mantle”. Scranton/Wiles-Barre skipper Dave Miley has been named Minor League Manager of the Year by Baseball America, the preeminent publication in the industry. It is the second significant accolade of 2012 for the veteran field general, who also took International League Manager of the Year honors for a second time in SWB pinstripes.
But while his 2007 squad won the division by 7.5 games, and his 2008 unit won the Governor’s Cup, his 2012 efforts might mark the zenith of his career. Despite having to play its entire season without a true home stadium while PNC Field underwent a $43.3 million reconstruction project, SWB posted the second-best record in the International League at 84-60.
“No home games and win the division, that’s pretty unbelievable,” Mark Newman, senior vice president of baseball operations for the New York Yankees told the publication. “He is a really good person and very good at his job.”
Miley championed SWB to its fifth division title in six years as a Yankees affiliate. In 23 seasons as a minor league manager, the 50-year-old Miley owns a record of 1,973-1,610 (.551).
“I tell the players the first day of the season, everybody has aspirations to get to the big leagues or go back to the big leagues. That goes from the clubhouse guy all the way through,” Miley told Baseball America. “If you aren’t going to be in the big leagues, Triple-A with the Yankees is tremendous to me. It’s been great. I have been treated outstanding. The communication involved has been great. We all want to be in the big leagues and go back to the big leagues, but it has been a great experience.”
Miley is currently in Puerto Rico managing Indios de Mayaguez for the second straight year after winning the Puerto Rican League title a year ago. His squad sports several Yankees’ farmhands including an SWB alumnus in right-hander Preston Claiborne, and possible future RailRiders like shortstop Angelo Gumbs, first baseman Luke Murton and outfielder Adonis Garcia.
“Dave’s work in 2012 was mind-blowing,” said SWB RailRiders president and general manager Rob Crain. “Under rare and difficult conditions, he authored the type of season most would find unbelievable on a movie screen. Sincere congratulations to him from the entire RailRiders family.”

What I want to know is, “does he have a binder ?”
@Buster_ESPN: @jaysonst And if the Red Sox signed LaRoche, they would lose their second-round pick. That’s a big deal to this group.
Blake-
Didn’t the Sux have LaRoche once before ?
Yea they had him for like a hit second a few years back
I wonder why a guy like Miley doesn’t get a shot an an MLB job. That was a heck of a job.
Well. I don’t know bout you guys but I’m really looking forward to the
upcoming WM’s.
Maybe it’s just my innate optimism but I’ve been feeling good ever since we settled our Pitching.
I felt that gave Cashman options.
Not expecting anything big to happen but I wouldn’t be surprised either.
I’d really like to see Cashman bust a move than none of us thought of or discussed.
A true Cashman stealth move.
Wouldn’t that be something.
The rumors will be flying.
MLBTR might go into meltdown.
Mr. MTU,
There’s something cooking. Sit tight.
Did we already see this Winter’s blockbuster with the Dodgers and Sux ?
Or, will there be others ?
Personally, I’m hoping for some more because I dig the excitment they generate.
@Ken_Rosenthal
Davey Johnson still wants LaRoche for #Nationals, says he was texting him all day, telling him to bring a pen to Davey’s golf MORE
@Ken_Rosenthal
tournament this weekend and “sign your contract.” If LaRoche leaves, Johnson plans for Harper to bat fourth. Span-Werth-Zimmerman-Harper.
Meant to say this year’s blockbuster.
The Marlins thing certainly qualifies too.
Mister Tom-
I sure hope so. My gut is saying yes but not my head.
Hope the gut is right.
MTU,
When you get a bad burrito, the gut is always right.
Tom-
Don’t ever spend Turkey day alone again.
We’ll leave a light on for ya’ out here.
By the way, your GB comments were moving.
I put out a little photo tribute for him earlier in the day.
I plan on making a yearly USO contibution in his memory.
I know he would have liked that more than almost anything.
I have a feeling we’ll be meeting up again one day.
Tom-
I think you’ll appreciate this.
Ran into a herd of these on a hike recently.
This guys was nice enough to pose for me :

I was within 20 ft.
Enjoy.
MTU,
Mine goes to Wounded Warriors. . Think he would like that better. He and I talked late night about our experiences, neither of us were ever badly wounded, and we talked of friends who were. There will be a meeting, for sure. Valhalla sounds like a good place.
Yes Tom. He probably would.
God bless the both of you for you courage and sacrifice.
It’s something I will never know. Guess the Man upstairs had other plans for me.
sp: your. sorry.
Baa, baa, baa. That’s a Yale song. Bah.
i think this year girardi put that ‘binder’ stuff to rest. he made big decisions in the pennant race and in the PS that clearly went against the percentages and even said he ‘just went with his gut’. They didnt all work out of course, no system does, but the ‘binder joe’ thing is dead imo.
Tom-
Looks like the Dodge hood ornament.
We’ll see Y’s.
Personally, I hope so.
@Ken_Rosenthal: Morse indeed would become trade candidate if #Nationals re-sign LaRoche. Rizzo has created options. “He’s no dummy,” Davey said of his GM.
MTU,
Got one of them on the hood of my truck. Shows how old it is.
Tom-
It’s on the new ones too.
Nats will likely target back end rotation help or bullpen help if they deal Morse as they really don’t need anything else
Have a good evening guys.
Might catch you later.
MTU,
Meant the REAL hood ornament.
@JonHeymanCBS: #dodgers have emerged as a potential surprise suitor for a.j. pierzynski, who was terrific in 2012. http://t.co/KB4m27Rh
ALL the players
Dodgers are going all out. It’s interesting to see what the end result will be.
Then they’ll sign Napoli to catch vs lhp.
Geez…
People can poo poo the Dodgers all they want.. they’ve been reinvigorating that fan base since they got a hold of the team. Smart, smart decision to make the fans a top priority.
Who do the dodgers think they are? the yankees?
MTU,
I loved the photo. Very amazing.

Yankeesource ?@YankeeSource
What would it cost to acquire Span in FA? You could see by Upton deal that it would be a huge price. Span for a A ball talent is puzzling.
1h Yankeesource ?@YankeeSource
I love prospects as much as you guys, but the Twins sold Span at a Dollar Store price. Huge steal.
1h Yankeesource ?@YankeeSource
Prospect for an affordable proven CF? And one? Bad move IMO. RT @90sRememberer Twins did really well on this, he’s an excellent prospect
Nodding head – - – -
im glad for martin that he’s getting big money. and im glad the yankees arent paying him. now put that money into 3b.
Perfect timing.
I came back here to check to see if there were any updates on the Pirates/Martin negotiations and it appears the news is breaking as of this writing.
Not a big deal to me. Certainly didn’t want to see the organization sign him to a multi-year deal.
Given his production since May of 2011, I didn’t quite understand the undeserved Martin love from Cashman and Girardi.
Can’t wait to see the Martin/Burnett reunion.
So what does this mean for lohud’s favorite nephew Tony Sanchez??
Tony Sanchez will make it soon in Pirate organization. Who knows the Pirates may trade Marting after AS Break in 2013.
I’m glad Martin is gone & that he is in NL. LOL!
Martin’s deal is 2 years for 17 million…i would have not been crazy for the Yanks to match
It would*
@JonHeymanCBS
#yankees had offered 2 years for somewhere around $12-ro-14M for martin. not sure if they bumped it at end.
tomingeorgia November 29th, 2012 at 7:28 pm
I missed your writeup on GB. Can you share it with me? Link?
basically 8.5 million per year. Guess cashman didnt want Russel Munson after all.
Perhaps Martin felt disrespected by the Yanks in some way because I am surprised the FO didn’t match the offer from the Pirates.
@DavidWaldstein
Russell Martin has agreed to a 2-year, $17 million contract with the Pirates, according to a person with direct knowledge of the deal.
lol @ that deal. Ok so qualifying offer probably not great if you’re paying nearly the same amount for 1 year that he got for 2 years. Yankees must really not like Martin to not match such a pitiful deal.
I’m starting to like the front office more.
At the very least we know that them not matching a smallish deal like that means they are serious about the 189.
Hope Martin enjoys Pittsburgh and catching his buddy AJ. No pressure to win on either of them.
The Yankees may not have gone more than a year on Martin. Good times. Good luck acquiring anyone helpful under those circumstances. Pierzynski isn’t happening. It looks like Romine/Cervelli /Stewart. Each one is another Munson.
So much for a 4 year deal…
Someone tow Cervelli’s car to the Bronx lol!
i liked martin, but not at that price. good luck to him i hope we play the pirates in the WS.

That’s what I was thinking!!!! It’s kind of amazing for a guy so adept at framing pitches lol
I wonder if Cashman has something cooking. For all the love they showed Martin, I’m a little surprised they didn’t match 2/17.
With the Dodgers supposedly after AJ, and the Red Sox and Mariners after Napoli, I wonder if there will be a trade. Hanigan, Santana?
RayVT,
It was in yesterday’s early morning chat, didn’t save it, best I can do.
@dubnoxious
@sportsJC16 any impact on Tony? @JonHeymanCBS #pirates agree to deal with russell martin
@sportsJC16
@dubnoxious Not with a 2 yr deal.
Thanks Tom! I will find it! I am glad to have corresponded with GB! He was a great guy! I miss him!
The Yanks need a bat for power without Martin and Swish. That said, it does not need to be a catcher. Martin hit basically 200 this year. Cash definitely has something up his sleeve. Relax. There will be someone behind the plate come spring training and a power bat somehwere else.
actually i think that’s good timing for sanchez. he didnt do well when me moved up to aaa and probably needs this season there. then the following year, he’ll be the rookie backup and if he hits, maybe the starter. so he’s got a clear shot to work his way to pittsburgh and prove he can take the job by the time martin leaves.
Nova for Montero please
?@IIATMS
And amusing RT @DCameronFG: Yankees need a catcher. Mariners now have Zunino and Jaso. Montero back to NY would be super interesting.
Fairwell Russ
Wow that’s pretty cheap for Russ….Yanks must have really wanted to avoid that 2 Nd year
I suspect something is in the works, as 8.5 mil is not a lot to add to 2014 for a catcher, somebody will have to catch.
Or they just don’t like him as much as it seemed by their public comments.

The Yankees never made an offer to Russell Martin; they haven’t made any offers to position players so far this offseason.

I think they’re worried… imagine if Mo is returned to form and wants to pitch in 2014…
I’m standing my prediction of them keeping things static until mid-season. If it looks like they can make the playoffs with a misfit toy catching situation and Ichiro and someone like Hariston as the 3rd and 4th OFers.. they might feel okay continuing to stand pat.
The New York Yankees and Russell Martin have PARTED WAYS!!!
This is what it feels like when your team can’t pay market value for players.

Whoa.
…interesting.
Does this mean they:
a) believe in Romine
b) believe they can win without significant production from that position
c) are really just concerned with the cash and not about a or b
How can they make an offer when Brian has been in training for his rappelling? These players need to wait for February.
Oh.. I guess this too:
d) believe they can acquire another catcher

They must have at least talked. Martin is impatient? They flat out told Martin they wouldn’t offer more than one year? Martin got pissed when they wouldn’t reoffer 3/21?
e) slept on it and Martin signed early

@Buster_ESPN
There were folks with the Yankees who thought a month ago Martin would leave. They loved his energy, but had other financial priorities.
I’m for Montero. They owe us.
Hard to believe 17/2 was too rich for our blood. Something has to be up.
This just must be the year of the 1 year deal.
Kinda like it…..
@Buster_ESPN
Texas was also in on Russell Martin, with a two-year overture, according to a source involved in the talks.
d) believe they can acquire another catcher … underestimate at your own peril
$ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $
Absolutely love what the FO is doing so far. They’re finally not being impulsive and being reasonable about who they hand contracts to.
Something is up. It is called payroll reduction. I will be very surprised if anything happens at the meetings. Still in wait mode for bargains.
JF – Sounds like they weren’t expecting him to come back from the onset.

Cervelli has the energy of 3 Martin’s.
Do the Phillies have a young catcher in their pipeline ?
I could see a deal for Carlos Ruiz and his 5m contract for 2013.
Cervelli can start the 1st 25 games.
Martin was a great guy, and had some big hits…but he is what he is, an average defensive catcher with a .220 BA. There are better offensive options out there with similar defensive output. The offense was the problem in the postseason, and ditching a .220 hitter won’t make me sad. It’s really time for a few new faces.
One year deals are the way to go.
Each year is a walk year…
Get Montero back!
The patriotic soul in moi dearly wanted to see a Canadian handler receive the Yanks and some young, recovered Guidry to another statement.
‘Guess I’ll have to put up with Italian clothes and cars ( the clothes I hold, the cars are on request )
blake November 29th, 2012 at 9:17 pm
Get Montero back!
————–
He doesn’t have a position!!!!
Get ready for a Romine/Stewie super duo
Pierzynski on a 1 year deal is a remote possibility.
Please advise on better candidates to catch that will sign for what the Yankees will pay. The reality is Yankee fans a new day is here. Budget before anything else.
There’s no where to pay him!!!! What would we do with these cheap-young-extra pieces???!!!
I’m thinking Ninja Cash is going after Carlos Santana. Total guess on my part, but
a) the Indians appear to be in selling mode
b) switch hitter with high obp and power
Thinking a package of Nova, Romine, Heathcott, and Adams gets it done.
What do you think?
mick November 29th, 2012 at 9:18 pm
Pierzynski on a 1 year deal is a remote possibility.
————–
Not if the Dodgers want him..
Man, that’s gotten annoying so quickly.
We’re off the “who will catch?” topic already?????
Casey stern tweeted the yanks should go after Mauer…..I don’t know what it’ll take for the media to get that the budget is real
I could see a deal for Carlos Ruiz and his 5m contract for 2013.
–
Why would the Phillies trade Ruiz, he is their best player?
eboland11 Source said the Yankees never made an offer of any kind to Martin
He must have looked at Hal the wrong way.
These are the new look Yankees.
You better wanna play here….
he is their best player?
=================
are you asking?
Getting Santana would be amazing….
@JonHeymanCBS
#yankees saw martin as worth $6M a yr, maybe a tick more. cerveli is a v. good backup. they need a starting C but have time
I think they have until the All Star break.
are you asking?
–
yes I am asking why they would trade him
Santana is a perfect fit for the Yankees.
Patient, powerful switch-hitting catcher. Yankee Stadium and Yankee lineup would probably do wonders for him.
Not sure about his salary, but he is still team controlled for a while.
More catcher discussion here, Montero discussion to follow at a later date
Carlos Santana would be sweet but why would the indians trade him now?
These Yankees (Hal) will not be played.
Hard to believe 5m over 2 years would make a difference…
Something else is up.
yes I am asking why they would trade him
======================
thought you were asking if he was their best player.
i ask if they have another catcher in their pipeline being he’s sitting out the 1st 25 games.
thought you were asking if he was their best player.
–
Why, it was a tack on to the same sentence that asked why they would trade him, not a separate statement?
It doesn’t matter who they have in the pipeline when Ruiz is still their best player and he is only missing a month.
Not sure why the Indians would trade Santana, though I’m not sure why they would trade Asdrubal and his name has been bandied about this offseason.
