Ichiro exploring other options

Tweet [1]

[2]Brian Cashman has put right field at the top of his priority list.

Ichiro Suzuki has put other teams into the mix.

A week after saying he was willing to wait for the Yankees, Ichiro’s agent has now told the New York Post [3]that Ichiro is ready to take any other option he likes.

“At the beginning we talked (to the Yankees) a lot but since that time, zero,” Tony Attanasio said. “As far as we are concerned we don’t care what the Yankees do. We have had conversations with multiple clubs. If we see something we like he will go through with it.”

It’s worth noting that the corner outfield market is nothing like the catching market. There are actually quite a few solid outfielders available. The biggest names (Josh Hamilton, Michael Bourn, maybe even Shane Victorino) probably don’t fit the Yankees financial plans, but guys like Ryan Ludwick, Cody Ross, Nate Schierholtz, Scott Hairston, Raul Ibanez, etc., could either handle the job alone or fit into a platoon situation.

Ichiro would give the Yankees an entirely left-handed outfield, and it’s worth remembering that he was pretty bad for a full year and a half before coming to New York last season. He’s not a bad option for right field, I’m just not sure he’s a must-have. The fact he’s shopping around shouldn’t lead to some sort of panic move from the Yankees.
