Late afternoon notes on Day 1 of the Winter Meetings

Tweet [1]

Just a few notes from Nashville, none of which specifically mention Alex Rodriguez…

[2]• Robinson Cano has officially committed to play for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. A total of 32 players were announced as having committed to the WBC, but Cano was the only Yankees player on the list. I’m sure there will be others eventually.

• One name consistently connected to the Yankees is former Mets outfielder Scott Hairston. [3]That said, Hairston seems to be gunning for a fairly substantial contract. He reportedly already has a two-year offer from the Tigers, [4] but he’s not planning to accept it.  [5]Hairston would, in theory, form half of a right field platoon (or simply provide some right-handed balance across the outfield).

• One name consistently coming up in wishful thinking for the Yankees is Padres third baseman Chase Headley, but a Padres official told Joel Sherman: “We’re not going to move Headley.” [6]

• Another infield depth candidate is Jeff Keppinger. His agent claims that teams are not at all hesitant to sign Keppinger [7]in the wake of his offseason injury. Could make sense for the Yankees in the right circumstance. The two have been connected in speculation.

• Doesn’t matter that the Blue Jays already have more catchers than they need, they claimed Eli Whiteside off waivers from the Yankees. [8]

• So much for signing Joakim Soria to a team-friendly one-year deal so that he can reestablish himself. He reportedly got two years and $8-9 million from the Rangers. [9]

• Another significant name came off the board today as Angel Pagan re-signed with the Giants. [10] Pagan got a four-year deal.
