Girardi on third base, the rotation and A-Rod’s injury
A few highlights — I’m using that word loosely — from Joe Girardi’s session with the media…
Describing Alex Rodriguez’s hip injury
“When I told him that I was going to pinch hit for him — that was in Game 3 — he had told me that him and Kevin (Long) were talking, and basically he just felt his hips weren’t firing right. It wasn’t pain, but he just felt there was not the explosiveness. We sent him out for an MRI, I believe it was the next day, but it was on his right hip, and that came back fine. So I kept playing him. Little did we know it was his left hip, we found out much later, and now we’re at the point where he needs surgery, and we’re going to be without him for a substantial period of time.”
On trying to fill the hole at third base
“I think it’s something that we’re addressing during these Winter Meetings, discussions that we’re having, and we’ll look to see what’s out there. I can tell you, by Opening Day, we’ll have something. We’ll have a resolution to it. I don’t know it’s necessarily going to happen in the next two or three days at the Winter Meetings, but by Spring Training we’ll have a resolution to it. … We really don’t have anyone that has a lot of experience in that position. David Adams played some third base last year for us in (Double-A) as he moved up, and I think he played some in fall ball, but we don’t really have a lot of internal people.”
Plan as if you have to fill a full 162 games at third base?
“I think you have to assume those guys (added to play in place of Rodriguez) can play out the whole year depending on when Alex gets back. Our hope is it’s going to be four to six months. You can’t predict what’s going to happen, and you can’t predict how he’s going to come back. The one thing I know about Alex is his work ethic is tremendous, and he’s going to work hard to get back to a level that he can play at a very high level, but you don’t know exactly how the rehab is going to go. Is he going to need some DH days? If that’s the case, then you’re going to have to have someone that can play third base (full-time).”
Eduardo Nunez only a shortstop
“That was something that we tried to stick to last year at the end. We felt that it was somewhat difficult for him to be changing positions. Depending on what moves we make this off season might tell you how much he possibly has to play at another position. I thought he did a pretty good job when we just left him at shortstop for us last year, but is it something that we can expand this year? Maybe. But I expect him to be more of a shortstop than anything else.”
Is there a current favorite to be the starting catcher?
I think it’s an open competition. Chris Stewart, obviously, he played for us all last year, and we like the job that he did for us. Cervy has more experience than Romine, and Romine didn’t get a chance to play a lot last year (in the minors), and Cervy did. It’s still going to be an open competition. We’ll wait to see if someone opens their eyes in Spring Training. I think these guys can get the job done.”
On Curtis Granderson’s second-half struggles
“It’s hard to say. His contact rate went down a little bit. I don’t know if it’s just a matter of he wasn’t seeing as many mistakes in a sense, but we know how dangerous of a hitter he is. He still had 40 homers and 100 RBIs. If you could write that in from an outfielder, you’re probably going to sign up for it. I expect him to have a good year for us this year.”
Safe to say that Sabathia, Kuroda, Pettitte and Hughes are set as the top four starters?
I think so. There are no guarantees. You have to show up in Spring Training. You can’t show up and not perform and be horrible and expect to be in the rotation. With the way they pitched last year, it’s safe to say they should be our four starters. … I think (Ivan Nova and David Phelps) would be the two favorites to be the fifth starter. A lot could change, though, from here till February 10th, and then April 1st.”
That’s an old Associated Press photo, not from today

Cashman has been handcuffed the past couple years. If you can’t hand out multi yr deals, and he’s clearly under orders not to, your not going to get high end players in the FA market.
———
He’s under orders to get under the $189M threshold.
If he can’t find good value either on the trade, free agent, or international market on multi year deals he’s just not a very good or creative GMs.
You’re telling me the Yankees can’t afford for example Cespedes?
You’re telling me the Yankees can’t afford for example Cespedes?
————————-
Kei Igawa scared them off
Cashman has a built in-excuse not to be creative or make any moves, or deviate away form the status-quo.
Cashman could have packaged one or more of the Killer Bs for a young cost controlled player when they were at the height of their value.
Did HAL order Cashman not to sign multi-year deals? Or did Cashman think not signing multi-year deals was his ticket to getting under 189?
You have to consider the end and the means, and whether HAL is dictating one or both.

True he could have it’s all about identifying who to keep and who to move.
Looks like a heated competition in camp this spring between Cervy, Romey and Stewie.
Sources: #Indians’ offer to Victorino was 4 yrs, $44 million. Evidence of their flexibility. Victorino got $2M per yr more from #RedSox.
Seems that every team has money but the Yanks…..the Mayans were right, the world will be ending on 12/21/2012…
The one move Cash did make looking ahead to 2014 was Pineda and it blew up in his face.
He obviously still has the rest of the winter to make a big move but it’s tough to stay patient and give him the benefit of the doubt at this point.
@LostNYY: #Yankees in on A.J. P (cant spell his name) and talked to Ichiro (delay?). solid word is a multi-player trade is brewing #mysteryteam

All is not Lost. In fact according to my breaking news twitter account Cashman is working on something huge.
Cash is in silent but deadly mode. Like a guy on the train who’s been eating prunes all day. Silent but deadly.
That’s all I can say for now.

What does that mean? Is he upset with Hal??
@JeffPassan: The 2014-15 class is an absolute bonanza: Verlander, Felix, Kershaw, Shields, Lester. Next to nobody expects first three to hit the market.
Yea….this is the problem with putting your eggs in the Yanks can just spend again in 2015 basket…..teams are so flush with cash now that by then thereby not be anything left to buy
“Cash is in silent but deadly mode”
Only cause he ate Mexican for lunch
Here’s the problem I have with the constant negativity on this board. I’m not a huge Cash or Joe fan by any means. They make mistakes, just like every other GM and manager in baseball makes mistakes. There are about 3-4 ahead of hte pack and the rest are average. The problem is people here have anti-Cashman and Girardi agendas which drives their every post. If Cashman keeps Montero, he’s overrated and should be traded for a good pitcher, and when he’s traded for a good pitcher, he suddenly becomes the next Johnny Bench. When Girardi removes his starter he should have left him in, and when Girardi leaves in the starter he should have taken him out. With many posters here, it’s like that for every single post, again and again, for hours and hours every day. Nothing original, nothing innovative, just the same pursuit of the “Fire Cashman and Girardi” agenda.
I get I can do nothing to change that. These are the posters that dominate LoHud, and will continue to dominate LoHud. I have neither the time nor energy to come on here every day and argue with these people. But it’s gotten to the point where it’s difficult to trust their arguments, because they pursue the same, tiresome agenda hour after hour, day after day. We get it, JerkFace, Against All Odds, Patrick and Co., you hate Cashman and hate Girardi, want them both fired immediately, think the Yankees are in a lot of trouble going forward. You’re free to express your sentiments on amessage board. Just don’t expect it to result with action by ownership, who, rightfully, trusts Cashman more than you, and realize that you lose credibility when you spend all your time ragging on the GM and manager, because no coach, no manager, no general manager, in the history of any sport, not even Isaiah Thomas, is as bad as you claim Cashman and Girardi are. It’s not humanely possible, and you believe it is only because of your agenda.
Just my 2 cents.
Have a nice evening, all

I’m NOT a Vulcan.
If Cash was to trade Grandy, what would you want back? I’m not asking for specific players, but what you think he’s worth. For example, a #3 pitcher? A young unproven, all star potential OFer? A couple of high end AAA prospects? What would you be looking for?
“If Cash was to trade Grandy, what would you want back? I’m not asking for specific players, but what you think he’s worth”
I don’t think you’re getting impact big leaguers back so as I’ve said Id first target the best SS/3B prospect I could find….if that doesn’t work you move on to the best pitchers or other position players……basically I would use him to try to add to an area of weakness in the system
If they can’t get Keppinger or Scutaro, does that leave Youk as the last option?
It is a difficult position when every other team can offer more in years and money.
MTU,
I have no sources, just a hunch.
Hal is supposedly a bottom line guy and when the Yankees make the playoffs it increases the bottom line. Therefore I can’t see the Yankees taking the risk of missing the playoffs so they can keep to a budget.
The goal is to have a 95 win team on paper.
There’s a trade and a signing brewing.
Nobody expected Tex when he was signed and I envision something similar. Just a hunch.
Maybe Swish & Ichiro come back to NYY on a 1 year deal. Raul too! Chavez too. Platoon Adams & Mustileir and let Nunez be BU SS & RH DH. Trade Gardner for a Catcher.
MTU,
Some of the photos you post are out of this world. Not Vulcan? Hmmm.
@BobKlap: Cashman on the hunt for a replacement for A-Rod: “There’s not a lot out there.”
Does Nate McClouth make sense? he’s looking for a one yr deal and he wants to re-establish himself.

OK Ray.
I’m sensing that too.
Let’s see if our hunches are correct.

If the Nats sign Laroche then Cash should put the full court press on about Rendon who would be blocked for at least the near future ….also check in to Olt who seems very available

I don’t necessarily think so….Rendon has a pretty significant injury history and he’s still at least a year away from the bigs ….it just depends on what the Nats see their needs as and also whether they’d even trade him at all

Dead serious
If he’s talking about defense being important then I guess Stewie is the full time catcher because Romine has zero experience and Cervelli’s is not a good catcher
He has to be bluffing about the catcher spot….has to be…they can’t go into the year with 2 back ups and a rookie
Just a reminder fellas. One time in a galaxy far far away, we lost a third baseman to injury before the season started and cash countered by getting the best player in baseball for our second baseman. Hmmm?? What can at this time not long long ago second baseman fetch us?
IN STEALTH I TRUST!!
As a Yankees fan, I find extremely discouraging when I hear Joe Girardi on YES tonight discussing platoons for RF,C, and 3b and Cashman saying “beggers can’t be choosers”. When you are charging the prices they are for tickets, parking, and food on top of the non-fan friendly environment they create with the stadium moat, limiting fan access to players for autographs and their overall snooty attitude toward their fans, I would at least hope they would put a top of the line product on the field. It’s absolutely disgusting! Can I pay platoon ticket prices? How about I pay half price for tickets on days when they don’t have their nine starters on the field?
It started with Bubbas our centerfielder to Swishers our first baseman to Stewies our catcher. Look at him listen to me. No. Look at me and listen to him. Damn. I dont know which on it is. All I know is that we are the Yankees and we dont field anyone thats at least not runner in the top 5 of his position. Give or take a few.
They at least need to get somebody better to pair with Romine
No offense from the catcher, no evident replacement for Swisher in the outfield and someone, anyone who will sign a one year contract in the infield. And next year, these days will seem like the good old days.
I hate to burst your bubble, but the big deal Cash is working on is signing a certain, ugly, past Red Sox 3B, pukless.

SoS,
Right now they have no one near that level at catcher, 3B or RF. They could fix that, but not if they will only give one year. Those players take one year only for a very good reason.
We all remember when and wish for it again. Now, we are the disadvantaged in acquiring players.

blake,
This silly season is the best news for the Yankees.
1. It undoubtedly tells the Yankees front office that the players with one year left on their contract will be to expensive to resign.
and
2. We could get some good parts for trading them in their low cost 1 year contracts compared to those ridiculous multi year 13 mil + per year deals backup players are getting.
