After yesterday’s Alex Rodriguez news created such a stir, today was naturally going to feel a little more quiet here in Nashville. Dan Haren is off the market, but there doesn’t seem to be one story dominating conversations the way Rodriguez did yesterday.
But there is this tidbit: Derek Jeter’s not fat anymore.
Easily overshadowed by the Rodriguez news, Jeter did a radio interview yesterday and said he actually got a laugh out of the New York Post photos that seemed to show him carrying a few extra pounds. Apparently people had actually been telling him he’d lost weight, and then all of a sudden he being called “Derek Eater” in the Post.
MLB Network’s Harold Reynolds even tweeted a picture of Jeter, and photographic evidence certainly suggests Jeter’s in the same shape he was during the season.
Far more important than a non-story about his weight is the status of Jeter’s broken ankle. He’s still wearing a boot, but Jeter told Michael Kay that there’s no doubt he’ll be ready for Opening Day.
“No question,” Jeter said. “I’ll be in the walking boot for another few weeks, and then I’ll be good to go It’s been a long process. What’s it been, six or seven weeks, where I haven’t been able to move too much? But it’s healing probably just as expected. We still got a long way to go before the season starts, but I’ll be ready.”
