Red Sox signed Shane Victorino
Joe Girardi just met with the media, and I’ll have highlights in a bit. But honestly, I wouldn’t expect much. This time of year, managers don’t have a lot to say, and Girardi certainly didn’t drop much news.
The Yankees don’t have an in-house third baseman. Their top four rotation spots are pretty much set. Their in-house catchers are good on defense. Pretty standard stuff, really.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox have made their second significant move of these Winter Meetings, agreeing to a three-year deal with Shane Victorino. He didn’t come cheap. Victorino will make $39 million.

That’s a bad contract, Victorino can be good but $39 million? Glad the Yankees stayed away from that one, not that they have $39 million to spend on anyone.
BOS overpaid.

Basically at this point the Yankees have to hope that Williams, Austin, Sanchez, etc work out and become above average starters or better in the major leagues. Otherwise we could be in for a rough few years starting in 2014

Add to that if they let Cano walk
“Basically at this point the Yankees have to hope that Williams, Austin, Sanchez, etc work out and become above average starters or better in the major leagues.”
Think it’s on the worse side. They are going to have to hope that they get at least one all star from that bunch, one close to all star and an above average everyday player. Something like that. Maybe even 2 all stars tbh.
They are basically going to need to get remarkably lucky to salvage this situation.
cb,
of those three, who do you think has the most potential? have you seen them play much?
I like the other moves Boston has made….don’t like this one….Victorino is a step away from being a 4th Ofer
@gbakermariners: Source: Mariners have contacted Raul Ibanez’s agent about the veteran returning to Seattle for a third go-around.
You can’t have our Rauldemort….. Cashman has awoken now
Strange move. Why not go for Swisher?
On his way out, Theo was blamed for all of the awful Boston signings. I guess the ghost of Theo drew up that contract for Victorino.
That’s just an awful signing.

Yeah
Or get really lucky with a good trade. Like you mentioned earlier, acquiring Upton could be a huge help.
Otherwise, we are looking at probably 2018 time frame for when the Yankees can be great again. In other words, when Tex and A-rod are off the books.
Of course this goes out the window is something changes with ownership and they decide to ignore the luxury tax. Unlikely…

I know you asked CB, just wanted to throw in there that Heathcott is probably the guy with the most upside and I forgot to mention him. The Yankees have some good position prospects but none are close to the majors so it’s very unlikely they get the kind of production that we are predicting they need.

So skeevy
A lot of people are bashing Cashman. I’m curious, who has signed these past 2 days that you think the yanks should have gone after?
@Buster_ESPN: The Arizona Diamondbacks have constructed a four-team deal that’s currently dormant. Would net them Asdrubal Cabrera, if it’s revitalized.

Darvish, Cespedes, Soler, Holliday would have been nice
I think the Cashman bashing is more of a cumulative frustration from the past couple seasons and his lack of proactive moves to better prepare the team heading into 2014.
Depends on where the Sox bat Victorino will decide whether this is good or a bad signing. If he leads off with Ellsbury batting third I like it.
none of these moves matter.. Red Sox have no pitching.
kd,
Just by intuition – I’d say Williams but I haven’t seen enough of them to really make too much of a meaningful distinction. Form what I have seen I do like all three of them mechanically at the plate (again small sample). I do worry about Heathcott getting injured.
I would say if I had to pick 1 of the 3 who I hope will work out – it’s Sanchez. The opportunity to find a plus hitting catcher is just so rare. Look at the free agent market now. Now CF is nearly as difficult but I do think that catcher is an opportunity to generate even more positional advantage.

@FeinsandNYDN
Source says the Yankees have been considering trading Curtis Granderson since early-November, as they’re unlikely to re-sign him next year.

Keep trying to get on my good side, Cashman

I’m surprised at what the Red Sox are doing. They rid themselves of all that money and now they feel like they have to spend some of it. They would have been better off giving Hamilton 25 mil for 4 yrs instead of Napoli/Victorino.
Whether Grandy is traded or walks I’m going to miss having him on the team.
I liked what I saw from Heathcott in the AFL a lot.
Never easy to make a move like this it would have been real nice if the Yankees traded Grandy last year.
Just once I’d like to see Cashman sell high on a player.
Do the Yankees have a team for 14? NO!
an all-star catcher for 10 years is just what the doctor ordered
there’s potential in the farm, i guess that’s all you can hope for
Cashman has been handcuffed the past couple years. If you can’t hand out multi yr deals, and he’s clearly under orders not to, your not going to get high end players in the FA market.

Then he should have been more persuasive in how potential long term deals help them with the 189 limit.
@JonHeymanCBS: Keppinger said looking for close $12M plus for 3 yrs. Had nice year in tampa. Nyy likes. #fibula
Guess he’s out then
@LostNYY: #Yankees in on A.J. P (cant spell his name) and talked to Ichiro (delay?). solid word is a multi-player trade is brewing #mysteryteam
