This morning’s main event: Rule 5 draft

The Yankees have a full 40-man roster, and they have plenty of the fringy, unproven players that the Rule 5 draft provides. They even have one Rule 5 pick already on the roster in left-hander Cesar Cabral. The Yankees might not be active in this morning’s Rule 5 draft — it starts at 10 a.m. ET — but they could lose some guys. Here are six Yankees minor leaguers – each at a different position – who stand out as Rule 5 possibilities.

Juan Cedeno
Left-handed reliever
Signed out of obscurity last winter, the Yankees actually gave Cedeno an invitation to big league camp despite the fact he’d never pitched above Double-A. He wound up in Triple-A and pitched pretty well with a 2.81 ERA and a .240 opponents batting average against lefties. His winter ball numbers in the Dominican Republic are pretty similar. A team could take a shot on him as a lefty specialist.

David Herndon
Right-handed reliever
A solid reliever with the Phillies in 2011, Herndon wound up needing Tommy John surgery last year and won’t be able to open the season. But that doesn’t mean a team couldn’t take him in the Rule 5 and stash him on the disabled list until he’s ready to pitch in June. The Yankees claimed Herndon off waivers earlier this winter, then they designated him for assignment and re-signed him to a minor league deal. Teams have passed on him through waivers, but situations change and someone might be interested in the bullpen depth.

Vidal Nuno
Left-handed starter
Signed out of independent ball, Nuno made Baseball America’s list of players who could be taken in the Rule 5. He opened last season in High-A Tampa’s bullpen, but spent much of the year at the top of Double-A Trenton’s rotation (along with prospect Brett Marshall, who was protected from the Rule 5). Nuno had a 2.45 ERA with 100 strikeouts in 114 Double-A innings. A team could look at him as a back-of-the-rotation candidate or a long relief possibility.

Addison Maruszak
Utility infielder
At this time last year, Maruszak would have been nowhere near the Rule 5 radar, and even now he might be a long shot. But Maruszak is coming off a nice breakout season in Double-A — he hit .276/.330/.457 despite a terrible month of April — and he’s a legitimate utility infielder who’s come up as a shortstop with experience at first, second and third (he’s also caught a little bit in spring training).

Luke Murton
First baseman
A 19th-round pick in 2009, Murton realistically does not seem like a particularly strong Rule 5 choice because he’s limited to first base and hasn’t been an overwhelming hitter in the minors. That said, he did lead the Yankees organization with 25 home runs last season. Power bats occasionally go in the Rule 5, and Murton does have some pop, but it’s hard to see him fitting on a big league roster.

Abe Almonte
Outfielder
Two things that make Almonte a Rule 5 candidate: Speed and versatility. After becoming a minor league free agent, the Yankees re-signed Almonte to another minor league deal. His potential has always kept him on the prospect radar, but he’s moved slowly through the system. Last season he hit .276/.350/.392 in Double-A, but what makes him most attractive is the fact he played all three outfield positions and had 30 steals (while being caught five times).

“Sorry that was more than a tweet. If Greinke signs with the Rangers, they can bag the 3 or 4 team deal and just get Upton directly from Arizona.”

They could get Upton any time they wanted if they would give Andrus…..the whole point of that multi team deal is 1) Daniels trying to get Upton without giving Andrus 2) towers trying to get both Andrus and Cabrera.

That’s why I can’t see it working……if Daniels is gonna cave and give Andrus then he will just cut those other teams out

  2. ac1 December 6th, 2012 at 8:54 am

Instead of then signing their 10th choice, just move forward with the kids. We don’t want Mark Reynolds or anyone else like that. If they aren’t going to sign AJ and they aren’t going to seriously offer something to Youkilis, then just tell us this is our team and move on. I don’t believe they will even trade Granderson anymore…..

I also believe by Cashman being SO PUBLIC about the 189 and telling everyone that will listen about how he can’t spend money, he has created an environment where no one will even want to come play here, even when they can start spending in 2015 or 2016.

And because of this, they better not trade the farm away and set us back another few years….

  3. blake December 6th, 2012 at 8:54 am

Cashman is waiting for Hamilton to say “screw you Texas”.

  4. MTU December 6th, 2012 at 8:55 am

  5. blake December 6th, 2012 at 8:55 am

“Hamilton might have been in play if Cashman had been able to find a taker for Granderson’s salary.

I think he could move Granderson if he wanted….he just can’t do it until he can replace him

  6. blake December 6th, 2012 at 8:57 am

    MTU,

Heathcott does have some injury risk but he seems healthy now and hopefully as he matures he will get smarter….he has lots of upside and he’s closer to the bigs than mason…..I like them both though and would move either in the right deal so long as I got to keep the other…..it’d have to be a big return for mentontrade both

    ____

If they sign Hamilton, there is NO CHANCE of resigning Cano. I don’t think we are resigning Cano anyway, so maybe they have decided that too in which case, go get Hamilton…. (be prepared for injuries and time missed)…

  8. blake December 6th, 2012 at 8:59 am

@BryanHoch: The Yankees’ offer to Kevin Youkilis is one year at $12M, according to source.

    Gross!

    ___

WHOA! Well if they sign him, they will be looking to trade Granderson’s 13 M and there will still be no room for Hamilton or anyone else…..

Can’t see Youk coming to NY. He will strike out and be booed louder than A-Rod…

  11. MTU December 6th, 2012 at 8:59 am

    Blake-

I don’t believe you change the spots on a Rhino.

Heathcott only knows one style of play from what I can see.

He’s an injury waiting to happen.

Given the choice between him and Mason. He’s gone in sixty seconds.

I would not move both. One or the other only.

  12. ac1 December 6th, 2012 at 9:00 am

Agreed but i dont see them doing either, especially if they sign Youkilis and don’t trade Granderson.

  15. Yankee Trader December 6th, 2012 at 9:02 am

    Blake-

I’m not as convinced as you that Cashman can move Granderson that easily and get value in return while freeing up his salary, knowing what you are getting from Curtis for one year.

  16. MTU December 6th, 2012 at 9:03 am

Team Greedy is getting crapped on this OS.

    :(

“I’m not as convinced as you that Cashman can move Granderson that easily and get value in return while freeing up his salary, knowing what you are getting from Curtis for one year”

30+ homers and a guy that can play CF? He was an MVP candidate a little more than a year ago…..I don’t know what they could get back but the way money is flying around for scrubs I definately think a contender would take his 15 million for a one year comittment

  18. spidanyc December 6th, 2012 at 9:07 am

How is Youk worth $12 Million for one year at this point of his career?

  19. ac1 December 6th, 2012 at 9:07 am

Signing Youk and trading Grandy makes the team worse!

    ___

Agreed. The need to decide now if they are serious about signing Cano and if not, go give Hamilton a 4/80 or 4/90, maybe an option for 5th and some incentives for games played.

  20. pkyankfan69 December 6th, 2012 at 9:07 am

Hmmmmm… We could sign an old-fat-washed up-turd who most Yankee fans despise to play 3B for $12M OR we could just let Nix/Adams/Nunez handle 3B for minimal money.

The $12M turd is the obvious choice for this FO.

  21. ac1 December 6th, 2012 at 9:09 am

How is Youk worth $12 Million for one year at this point of his career?

    ____

Same way Angel Pagan is worth 4/40, Scutaro is 3/25, Victorino 3/39, Martin 2/17, 5/75 for BJ Upton and Greinke that has shown nothing will get more than Cliff Lee, Halladay, Sabathia, etc….. The Market is out of control.

  22. blake December 6th, 2012 at 9:09 am

They should offer Hamilton. 4/100 with an opt out after year one

  23. austinmac December 6th, 2012 at 9:09 am

Twelve million for Youkilis. I told Chip Cashman’s efforts for more money were likely about him.

I say sign Hamilton and then trade Grandy for Young. What I say, never matters.

They are offering him what Keppinger got for three years. In the Yankees strange world they would rather do that. They will worry about 2014 then, I presume.

  24. blake December 6th, 2012 at 9:10 am

Anybody still think some team wouldn’t take Granderson’s 15 million? Teams are blowing their noses with 1 million dollars checks

  25. ac1 December 6th, 2012 at 9:11 am

They should offer Hamilton. 4/100 with an opt out after year one
    ____

I say no opt out. Cano will be gone, we dont want to have to deal with replacing him AND hamilton too…

  26. MTU December 6th, 2012 at 9:11 am

    Blake-

Sorry to burst your bubble but that isn’t gonna happen.

Hal approving 25 mil/per for a guy with that much risk.

    Surely you jest.

    :)

  27. brianlopez22 December 6th, 2012 at 9:12 am

PUKE is getting 12 mm? What the F is Hal doing?

Why would you pay another 12 mm for a fat, slow, always injured, washed out moron who the fans hate?

If I could do a deal for Headley with Hughes/Nova, Austin and then one of Hearhcott/Mason then Id strongly consider doing it …. Then Id Sign HAMILTON! ….and try to sign EJax to an affordable deal
    ///

    blake,
I might consider it for Upton, if I could be convinced his shoulder will hold together, though of course they would likely demand more… and I think I would send Heathcott, simply because he thinks he’s a Kamikaze pilot… I really like Heathcott, though. Like Williams, too, and Williams, to me, is a smoother CF than Heathcott, who I like better for a corner spot.

If you traded one of Hughes/Nova and one of HC/MW, and you signed Hamilton and also had Upton, you could then trade Gardner or Granderson, or both, and turn them into something else.. think I’d rather turn Joba back into a starter than trade for EJax…

Upton, Hamilton, Cano fixes the offense…

  31. blake December 6th, 2012 at 9:14 am

“say no opt out. Cano will be gone, we dont want to have to deal with replacing him AND hamilton too…”

Or you win the 2013 WS….let Hamiltton go….and sign Cano

  32. ac1 December 6th, 2012 at 9:15 am

This is what i was saying yesterday. The Yankees have no clear direction. It is proven by a 12M offer to Youkilis. No extensions, no young guys given chances, telling people they have no money then offering 12 M to Youkilis. NO hope of resigning Cano, no willingness to trade to get something back (other than Granderson).

No hope for the future because they will once again trade half the farm to get someone they dont really need.

  33. mick December 6th, 2012 at 9:15 am

i could live with ichiro and youk.

    ///

If this were 2007-edition Youkilis we were getting, (depending on other particulars, of course, but in a vacuum), that would be one thing, but this guy is physically a mess and on the wrong side of 30.

It does seem incredibly insensible to sign a guy who the fanbase loathes, when your team is already so unappealing.

  36. chicken little December 6th, 2012 at 9:18 am

youklis is a panic move pure and simple. if george were around, the panic move would be hamilton.

  37. brianlopez22 December 6th, 2012 at 9:18 am

    mick –

I’ve said this before. That is simply an AWFUL team with those 3.
    Look at what you’re saying.

AJP (the most hated teammate in baseball)+
PUKE (the most Yankeefan hated fat troll)

    on the same Yankee Team?!?

  38. mick December 6th, 2012 at 9:18 am

If one year of Granderson is so valuable, why isn’t he now the CF’er for the Braves instead of Lofton, for the Giants, instead of Pagan, for the Nats instead of Span? Why haven’t the Phillies nabbed him instead of possibly overpaying for Boras client and the return of Michael Bourn?

If I’m trading Granderson I would hope that I’d be getting back a player who can fill one of the holes.

Maybe the other teams in need of a center fielder will come knocking once the rest of the good FA outfielders are signed-Hamilton, Swisher and Bourn.. Did I miss any?

  42. Chip December 6th, 2012 at 9:20 am

My bet is that Almonte goes in the Rule 5 draft – some team will stash him as a PR/Defensive Replacement on the end of the bench this year and hope that the bat develops at the major league level.

  43. blake December 6th, 2012 at 9:22 am

“If one year of Granderson is so valuable, why isn’t he now the CF’er for the Braves instead of Lofton, for the Giants, instead of Pagan, for the Nats instead of Span? Why haven’t the Phillies nabbed him instead of possibly overpaying for Boras client and the return of Michael Bourn?”

I’m just saying I think they could move him….and again CashmAn isn’t really in a position to trade him yet…..they can’t afford to subtract him from the offense if they aren’t replacing him.

I think the Braves and Phillies both would like to have him…..but we have to see how things play out

  44. mick December 6th, 2012 at 9:22 am

    Time to walk the Mops.

    Later.

  46. J. Alfred Prufrock December 6th, 2012 at 9:23 am

    MTU,

Agreeing to disagree is of course, fine. But I think it’s unlike you to say a player has “serious problems” (without qualifying those “problems”). I don’t want to get into a Melky discussion, either, but I find it interesting that Alex begged management to sign him, that when asked, Jeter said Melky was a good teammate and a good clubhouse guy, and the facts are, he hit .274 in 2009 and indeed was a force in the ALCS to help us gain the championship round, and that the last two seasons – so he has a great year and then repeats it – show what was germinating in 2009 bore fruit. Girardi even admitted his evolving right-handed swing earned him the starting job. So, I still am wondering what “serious problems” he had that you state as if they are factual. Could you mean, he alienating SOME people in the FO, for reasons no one has really explained to any objective degree of satisfaction? “Problems” which did not dissuade Jeter from calling him a good teammate and clubhouse presence, or Alex from exhorting management to bring him back?

    Just sayin’.

  47. brianlopez22 December 6th, 2012 at 9:23 am

    mick-

    You are 100% wrong.
The fans would embrace him if he had anything left.

He is an older, slower, fatter version of his former self.

This is not a video game.
He really did hit .236 last year.

  48. blake December 6th, 2012 at 9:24 am

Would Kenny Loften do a one year deal?

  49. Mike Ri December 6th, 2012 at 9:24 am

According to Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times, the Mariners are “very close” to a deal with Josh Hamilton.

The Rangers are going to be given every opportunity to counter whatever offer Seattle has made but are currently locked into a fight with the Dodgers over free agent right-hander Zack Greinke. So this Hamilton thing may take a little while to sort itself out. It would be a surprising but excellent get for the M’s, who have struggled to attract top offensive talent over the past several offseasons.

  50. mick December 6th, 2012 at 9:24 am

Joba might have to go if Youk comes.
We could charade him as a starter and see if KC bites.

  51. Yankee Trader December 6th, 2012 at 9:25 am

Maybe the Yankees should trade for Michael Young before the Phillies nab him[MLBTRs]. The Rangers are willing to pay a good bit of his remaining 16M salary this year.

  52. brianlopez22 December 6th, 2012 at 9:26 am

I would def take Michael Young over PUKE.

  53. PacoDooley December 6th, 2012 at 9:27 am

Just saw you post. If the Yankees could make a deal with the Phillies for Granderson, would at least try to get catcher Carlos Ruiz, also a FA at end of 2013, even though he has a 25 game suspension for 2nd time amphetamine use.

  73. blake December 6th, 2012 at 9:36 am

The only thing worse than signing Youkalis would be trading for Josh Beckett !

  74. austinmac December 6th, 2012 at 9:36 am

    Chip,

With a full 40 man roster, the Yankees apparently cannot make a Rule 5 claim.

  75. blake December 6th, 2012 at 9:37 am

Cashman wouldn’t want the cheater Ruiz….he’s a BUv without the amphetamines

  76. Yankee Trader December 6th, 2012 at 9:37 am

    Mick-

8:06am: As of late last night Young had shown no interest in waiving his no-trade, tweets ESPN’s Jayson Stark.

7:10am: There are signs that Young would be willing to waive his no-trade rights and accept a move to Philadelphia, writes Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com.

12:55am: The Phillies’ reported interest in Michael Young has picked up some steam, with Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reporting that the two sides are in “advanced talks.”

In the proposed scenario, the Rangers would eat more than half of Young’s $16MM salary to facilitate the trade, which would likely send a young Major League reliever and a low-level prospect back to the Rangers in exchange for the 36-year-old Young.

They can’t cut someone before the draft?

Maybe they can have another team make the pick and then trade for him (which has happened before)

Either way – my main goal is to not see Abe Almonte leave rather than who comes.

“I think Greinke’s agent is doing the same with the Dodgers, tbh.”

Or vice versa….throwing all this stuff out there about comfort in Texas to see how far LA will actually go

    ——————

Yeah that’s what I meant, I think they’re playing the Dodgers with all this talk of his wife wanting to live in Texas. It could be a factor, and maybe when you’re looking at the difference of $150 million vs. $170 million you’d go with where you feel most comfortable living and just say ‘hey look at that boat load of money!’ instead of worrying about the $20 million extra………. but I think he’s trying to squeeze the Dodgers on this one. I sort of hope so anyway because if he doesn’t end up in LA there’s no way the Yankees are matching the $300 million dollar offer they throw at Cano!!!!!!!!

Carlos Ruiz and Romine as your catchers-The startng staff would be overjoyed with Ruiz.

Michael Young at 3rd, 1st, DH and just about any spot on the infield would be another upgrade.

Since Kuroda, Pettitte and probably Hughes will be gone in 2014, might as well line up young staff to replace them and give them 2013 to prepare.

Once again illustrating there is no cohesive well formulated gameplan by Yankee decision makers. It also would be a big fat middle finger toAdams Joseph and Mustlier and their minor league development efforts that they would sign an old has been, always hurt player most Yankee fans despise, than give their internal options a chance.

This organization is dysfunctional and it starts with ownership that is completely disengaged from baseball operations except for a budget figure.

I’ll say one thing about the Yanks spending. As we have seen this Winters Meetings, teams are going extra years and over pricing the FA market. Therefore settting this FA market and ridiculous overspending by teams. EX: Shane Victorino 3 for 39 mil from Boston. At least the Yanks aren’t determining this market.

  148. Jerkface December 6th, 2012 at 10:09 am

hahaha we are going to blow youk out of the water by offering 4 million less than other teams… for 1 less year! That makes no sense. Youk isn’t that good, he is injury prone, and should not be playing third. Unless they think he is going to bounce back? And even then, why pay for him at bounce back prices?

  149. BoJo December 6th, 2012 at 10:10 am

Joba to the rotation would have to be preceded by, at the very least, Eppler’s replacement.

I’ve been sending Cashman emails ever since he caved into Eppler and Eiland on this issue, doing a 360 degree turn and showing how spineless he really is.

In January, I started sending emails to Hal suggesting both Cashman and Eppler (and Girardi) be replaced.

Finally, I emailed Hal and requested he fire himself.

  187. BoJo December 6th, 2012 at 10:29 am

A number of us have been saying bring ib Beltran and then Melky for years now. Both are the type of clutch hitters that win WS championships. I felt last season was lost from ST…which is why I didn’t participate too much in the game blogs. It was easy to see that the team is built to win the season, but not the post-season. that was not the way George would have built the roster.

Many said it was stupid. It’s just the way you say it.

  191. J. Alfred Prufrock December 6th, 2012 at 10:39 am

The move itself was chided, and the “wisdom of Cashman” was drilled here night and day, night and day.

My argument was always consistent: that we had pitching, that we needed only to sign Kuroda to shore it up, that the lineup was old.

I was the first person here to post the team’s three-year decline against right-handed pitching.

My first two comments were: if they were signing Kuroda, why did they need to trade Montero?

    and:

Who will protect Cano in the order?

Both of these were highly accurate.

The pitching thrived without Pineda throwing a single pitch, and the aging offense – which people like Stuckey, Irreverent Discourse and many others argued to the death with me was still at its 2009 powers, failed in spectacular fashion.

    I stand by those comments.

  192. mick December 6th, 2012 at 11:05 am

How is any of that questioning your Yankee fandom?
