Nix clears waivers; outrighted to SWB

Tweet [1]

Off the roster, straight to the top
of the third base depth chart.

Jayson Nix has cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He signed his $900,000 deal with the understanding that he would be designated for assignment and would go to the Triple-A roster if he cleared. He will
come to spring training with a chance to win his job back.

Even though he is off the roster, Nix is probably the top in-house option to play third base next year. He played there quite a bit when Alex Rodriguez was hurt last season, and the Yankees seem unwilling to let Eduardo Nunez try it again. Neither David Adams nor Ronnier Mustelier has a full season of Triple-A experience.

That said, it seems all but certain the Yankees will sign someone. And it
could happen fairly soon if Kevin Youkilis accepts his current offer.
