Report: Youkilis signs with Yankees
Ken Rosenthal has the story: Kevin Youkilis has signed for one year, $12 million.
UPDATE, 6:37 p.m.: As you probably expected, the Rosenthal report is true. The Yankees have agreed to terms, but Youkilis still has to take a physical and actually sign a contract. The Yankees believe Youkilis will hit for a better average than he did last season — he reached a career-low .235 last year — but mostly they seem to like that he can still grind at-bats and hit for power from the right side, something the Yankees lineup is lacking.

the most deplorable bandaid yet.
Youk and Ichiro is nice but they definitely need to add another bat. They can’t be the only additions. The middle of the order is really lacking power.
I don’t know why we are paying so much for a guy who may only be a platoon hitter vs LHP & who should not be playing third base.
Grossssssssssssssssssssssssssss

Thome? Hairston? Soriano? All might be available ..

Yeah his bald sweaty head is pretty gross.
So.. where does Youk bat?
Maybe he’ll be our DH and Adams can man 3B.
Still can’t believe we could have had Beltran for how much we’re paying Youk…
There is no plane.
Also, his defense is terrible.
————–
His defense is definitely better than what Arod’s will be after 2 hip surgeries. Arod is lucky if his defene is decent at 3rd when he comes back.
What a bore.
Jerkface,
because he would play for one year.

Of course he will, the Yankees know best :>
1 year deal
the problems the yankees have are because of 7,8,10 year deals…. not 1 year deals.
this signing is small potatoes even if it’s too much $….

I am not convinced Yankees are finished spending. All they have done is bring back 2012 pitchers and Youkilis in as sub for A-Rod.
We’re the Yankees, not the Padres!

Sweat & Grime are two of Youkilis’ key exports.
$12MM for Youkilis is ridiculous but their options are extremely limited. what are you gonna do?
One of my big problems with signing Youk is that I made fun of the red sox so much for moving him back to third and laughed heartily when he both sucked there & got hurt a lot, and now my favorite team just paid 12 million for the privilege of doing the same thing I made fun of :<
Ichiro and Youkilis are the Yankees all in moves for the winter. Now, we’ll add a crummy RH bat for the outfield.
I hate this.
I will only forgive them if they sign Josh Hamilton
$12MM for Youkilis is ridiculous but their options are extremely limited. what are you gonna do?
=========
yep. you can argue that the Yankees left themselves poorly prepared…. but that’s old news. As far as improving the team for 2013 without affecting 2014 payroll, this isn’t a terrible move.
It’s a minor move that looks like a big deal because of who it is.
Oh I like this game!! Here are more of my thoughts on the situation: http://i1075.photobucket.com/a.....ious/o.gif
If Youk bounces back and oPSs .850 them ill love with it if they out a bag over his head
I’m not happy about this, but there’s nothing I can do about it. Sighhhhhhh
The other thing is I have no faith he’ll stay healthy. It could end up being a bad deal all around. Chavez was making a mil the last couple years, if he got hurt it was no big deal. This is different.

Yanks should also sign John Rocker and Ty Cobb to make the team more likable.

When Youk takes Lester and Doubront over the Monstah, Red Sox fans will go apoplectic …
This year is going to be very painful to watch. In essence we have a team of 40year olds on one year contracts.
Ugh.
The Knicks do know they are playing the Nets tonight – - – -
Relax. This will be fun. The oldest team in baseball–by a lot. One last hurrah before the team is blown up. Maybe ARod retires after this year–icing on the cake. $100 million freed up.

Cash …..your know there are a lot of teams looking for a leadoff hitter
alright, after you get over the fact that he’s……well…. kevin youkilis, it actually does make alot of sense…
knicks sleepwalking

You know a guy, who knows a guy, who knows a guy?
the yankees needed a 3bman (and a dh) and they need a RH bat, youkilis was the best guy on the market to fill those roles.
As usual the Nets getting away with murder on the boards.
Melo gets hammered again and no call

and all that for 12 mil……again he’ll hit the DL before May
youk is the only real option to b/u tex on the roster, too.
and now Felton gets the ticky tack call.
Wow,youk had one more triple than cano.
in spite of the overall Lohud dislike of this signing Youk will be a fan favorite in New York-he plays hard and will appeal to those of us who celebrate Hanukkah instead of Christmas.
A little bit of my Yankee fandom died today.
I always hated him as a Red Sox, he was such a misery as an opponent. So I now hope that he brings that same package to the Yankees.
Sign Ichiro and call it a successful off season
happy hanukkah to Youk
Kevin Youkilis had a nightmare of a season between Boston and Chicago in 2012, hitting a career-low .235 with just 15 doubles and 60 RBI in 122 games. His .745 OPS and .336 OBP were also the lowest of his career. Youkilis was pushed out of his third base job in Boston, traded to Chicago and never dug himself out of a season-long rut, complicated by nagging injuries to his knee, toe, rib and back. It was the second straight season Youkilis saw injuries accompanied with a dip in production.
Tyler – Leave the gun.. grab the cannoli.
@AndrewMarchand: With Ichiro and Youk about to make it official, Cashman can think hard about making some big deals with the base of the team set.
happy hanukkah mg.
this is an addition. it didn’t cost them much and it fills a hole. he’s far from perfect but they are better with him than w/o him.
i wanted them to try nunez over there. but that wasnt going to happen. the fact is that all of their options had flaws. this just gives them more cover. im ok with it.
i rooted for megajerks like clemens and randy johnson, so ill get over rooting for youlilis if he contributes.
Finally blocked Reggie Evans!!!
MG – If Youk comes in and hits/plays like he did a few years back, even with his poor D, sure we’ll all be happy.
Do people really root for other people just because they share a religion?
hey if youk is as bad as last year, all the in-house options will still be open to the yankees. in fact this might be a good thing for adams who might win the b/u job and get alot of playing time.

But the greatest megajerk of them all – he who shall not be named – I had difficulty with:

He’ll only get a lot of playing time if Youk dies. All their back up choices are right handed… would have made more sense to sign Chavez and let the younger players fill in the other half of the platoon.
Do people really root for other people just because they share a religion?

Unfortunately yes
Youk was good in 2010….hurt in 2011 and 2012…Zune he will find it…..I’ll amend my master plan lineup now.
Gardner CF
Jeter SS
Cano 2B
Tex 1B
Hamilton LF
Youk 3B
AJP C
somebody DH
Ichiro RF
Can’t wait to hear Girardi say Youkie

Oh yeah..? When did they finally give up on Andruw Jones…..???
I’d love to see his face if Girardi calls him Kevy!
@jcrasnick: No Greinke, no Shields and no Upton match for #rangers. What impact addition is left for Texas besides Josh Hamilton?
Please steal Hamilton and leave Texas with nothing

Ppl root for other ppl for all reasons.
phil baseball has a very long history of fans rooting for teams and players according to religion, ethnicity and race. its a fact. going back to the turn of the 20th century, a main ‘feature’ of teams is that they were protestant and drew from the more established fans or ethnic or even catholic and drew heavily from the immigrant communities.
just like there is an irish baseball hall of fame, id imagine there is a jewish hof and an italian hof.
there is nothing inherently wrong with rooting for people from a similar culture to yours.
@jcrasnick: If Kevin Towers & #dbacks can get their new SS without trading Justin Upton, ripple effect on #rangers would be interesting.
can he be called by his real name…..Youkilis
..I root for Italians just because they’re Italian.

no (I never rooted for Sandy Koufax when he pitched against the Yankees or any other team) but it adds something when he plays for your team.
The greek god of walks is a yankee?? OH MY!
Picture Joba is on the mound and runners at first and third. Let’s hope Joba resists the urge to toss one off Youk’s noggin when the bench calls the third-to-first fake pickoff …
phil rizzuto always let you know that he liked the paizanos in baseball.
nothing wrong with a little ethnic pride, this is new york!
yanks need a guy that will get dirty and shows he cares out there like Oneill did…
with gardy out last year they had few that epitomized that.
If Arizona gets their SS from the Reds I wonder what they would want for Upton now? The Rangers can probably top any Yankees offer but I wonder what they would be looking for. The Yanks could always trade Granderson, move Gardner to CF and get Upton or another corner outfielder.
I still think Upton will be traded ….if Towers gets a SS elsewhere though then maybe that opens up other deals?
This is utter complete BS. Nets getting every single call right now
Extremely terrible signing. I will not waste 1 dollar on the parent club this year. I will not watch 1 game. Thank You Cashman for ruining Andy and Mo’s send off season.
not one tweet by a Yankee so far about the big signing
@Ken_Rosenthal: Three-team trade, per source, will look like this: Choo, Jason Donald to #Reds, Gregorius to #Diamondbacks, Stubbs, AZ pitcher to #Indians.
the Marshon Brooks 3 point play made me sick – - – -
@Ken_Rosenthal: Corbin, Skaggs and Bauer were among #Diamondbacks pitchers who were in play. #Indians would get one in this deal; Skaggs unlikely.
Ken Rosenthal?@Ken_Rosenthal

Nooooooooo
I’d like the have that Choo player
Rosenthal seems to kill all these other guys in sources
I guess not, but ethnic pride and religious fervor have been big ingredients in most wars.
now is the time for joba tweet…”we welcome youk to our team”, maybe he’s waiting for him to pass the physical…..
I have no problem with Youkilis. Just be healthy and play reasonably well. We would all play for the Red Sox if they drafted us, traded for us or paid us enough money.
Happy Hannukah, MG and others.y wife also will be happy for the signing.
yanks manage to find someone worse than ADud for his replacement and for $12MM no less

I for one hopes he fails the physical
Whyyyy did they pass on Beltran last year???
I get that the fact that if he stays healthy (big if), he can help with his hard-nosed style of play.
Yipee I am so looking forward to saying wow good play Youk.
What I think is stupid is you pick a broken down platoon 3b, over young in house candidates and a freaking catcher. You could have went with either Martin for more defense, or AJ for more offense. But no we get Youk. SMH
So who exactly is going to be the Yankees catcher this year?
Cashman will sign a rightie hitting outfielder and that will be it.

I don’t get the allocation of resources unless they are also going to sign AJP….and also if they really think Youk can bounce back.

Absolutely. He just never seemed like that nice of a guy to me from his whining on the field to his picture where he’s flipping the bird to the camera. I think it’s more of that for me than him playing for the Sox. For example, I wouldn’t mind at all a guy like Ellsbury coming to NYC. Loved Damon coming here too… Youk not so much. Same reasons for a guy like Beckett.
I worry that a Scott Hairston signing is coming and that’ll be it…..
@keithlaw: Right. “@gladdyontherise: @keithlaw It’d be nuts for the Reds to think Choo can play CF well, right?”
The Rockies have made it clear since the end of the season that they are not shopping Michael Cuddyer, but they have to listen as they look to acquire more pitching, tweets Troy Renck of the Denver Post. The Phillies and Yankees could both use a corner outfielder and Renck says the situation is worth monitoring.

Wasn’t in the budget… had no position… there is no plane…
maybe we can trade Gardner for Ellsbury, would have to get another player back from the RS to make trade even
=====>>>>>>>>> (next)
Cashman could probably get Clemens to comeback on a cheap 1 year deal : (
I think this is a good signing. If we’re lucky, Youk will have a bounceback year, fill in adquatedly at 3B, be the primary DH, and the primary 1B backup. If we’re unlucky, he’ll be injured or he’ll decline so much he’ll be worthless. Twelve million is a lot to pay for someone who has only a 50-50 chance of helping the team. However, aside from the high cost, I like this signing.
P.S. I think the Red Sox background is a non-problem. It will disappear the first day Youk puts on a Yankee uniform.
