Just a few items worth checking out…

• Having been on both sides of the rivalry, Johnny Damon gives the Kevin Youkilis signing a thumbs up. [2]He told George King that Youkilis will be a good fit in the Yankees clubhouse. “He will be fine,” Damon said. “Especially since Boston traded him. Now he realizes it’s a business and you have to take care of yourself.”

• Speaking of Youkilis, the ESPN stats department takes a look at Youkilis’ recent numbers. [3]This stat isn’t particularly encouraging: He had one RBI in his last 59 at-bats.

• Over at Yankees.com, Bryan Hoch tackles a handful of questions in a mailbag. [4] Among the topics: What to do with Eduardo Nunez, whether Austin Romine could make the big league roster and the status of the coaching staff.

• In the American League East, the Red Sox are reportedly in on starting pitcher Ryan Dempster. [5] Ken Rosenthal says there’s no deal in place, but the two sides are engaged in discussions.

• Also in the A.L. East, the Rays are close to signing Roberto Hernandez. [6]That’s the guy formerly known as Fausto Carmona. Could help them make up for some of the pitching lost in the James Shields trade.
