A few notes and links: Yankees add catching depth

Tweet [1]

Obviously Josh Hamilton signing with the Angels is the news of the day, and the Yankees aren’t going to steal any headlines by signing a former Angels backup.

Making a minor addition to their catching competition, the Yankees have reportedly agreed to a minor league deal with Bobby Wilson. [2]He played in 75 games for the Angels last season, has been a backup catcher the past three years, and seems to fit right with Chris Stewart and Francisco Cervelli as a long-time backup who’s never hit much in the big leagues.

It’s not a headline move, but it’s also a minor league contract. Doesn’t hurt to have him.

[3]• From Buster Olney: Ichiro Suzuki’s agreement with the Yankees seems inevitable, and when he signs, Ichiro will officially turn down a two-year, $14 million offer [4]from the Phillies. That seems to make it all but certain that the Yankees will have to go two years as well. [5]

• Scott Hairston seems to fit the Yankees need for a right-handed outfielder, but Hairston has told ESPN New York that he wants a multi-year deal. [6]Can’t help wondering how that will affect the Yankees pursuit.

• According to Jim Bowden, the Indians are “aggressive” in their pursuit of Nick Swisher. [7]Obviously Swisher would replace Shin-Soo Choo in right field. The market for Swisher still seems fairly wide open. He’s been connected to a lot of teams. Have to think his situation could come into focus after Josh Hamilton signs somewhere.

The Red Sox are adding Ryan Dempster to their rotation. [8] Dempster has reportedly agreed to a two-year, $26.5-million deal.
