Wednesday night notes and links

There are times when a press release arrives, and you can’t help but wonder whether someone in the media relations department came up with the quotes. No such question with today’s Ichiro Suzuki announcement.

“I believe the Yankees organization appreciates that there is a difference between a 39 year old who has played relying only on talent, and a 39 year old who has prepared, practiced, and thought thoroughly through many experiences for their craft. I am very thankful, and I will do my best to deliver on their expectations.”

That sort of quote can only come from Ichiro himself.

It’s amazing to think that less than six months ago, Ichiro seemed finished, and today he got a two-year deal. I’m not sure he can repeat those late-season results, but on a personal note, he’s a fun guy to cover and seems pretty popular in the clubhouse. I’m glad he’s back, if only for those reasons. And for his quotes.

A few other notes from today:

• First came word that the Angels were interested in trading DH/1B Kendrys Morales for an innings eater, then the Angels did exactly that by sending Morales to the Mariners for starter Jason Vargas, a 29-year-old who’s thrown at least 200 innings the past two seasons. The Angels got the rotation durability they needed. The Mariners got the power they wanted. Makes sense. And no, the Yankees don’t really have a Vargas-type that they could have offered.

• One of the better and more versatile pitchers came off the market today when Carlos Villanueva agreed to terms with the Cubs. Could be a reliever, but Jon Heyman reports that he should get a chance to start in Chicago.

Mickey Storey is on the move again. He’s been claimed off waivers by the Blue Jays. Beginning with a DFA by the Astros, Storey has been claimed by the Yankees, then claimed (back) by the Astros, then claimed by the Blue Jays. He’s on the Eli Whiteside plan, apparently.

• Cody Ross, who’s probably the top right-handed outfielder on the market, reportedly met with the Rangers yesterday. Not sure the Yankees will be able to get either Ross or Scott Hairston, but they clearly need a right-handed outfielder now that the Ichiro deal is finalized and an all-lefty outfield is in place.

• The Red Sox officially announced their deal with Ryan Dempster. “I’m very aware that the AL East is a tough division,” Dempster said. “If you go out there and make the pitches and execute, it won’t matter who you’re pitching against or where you’re pitching.”

hard to believe that ichiro has played more games than mattingly.

  2. RadioKev December 19th, 2012 at 9:53 pm

Ichiro is indestructible. Check that guys games per year.

  3. Pat M. December 19th, 2012 at 10:11 pm

I understand that Texas is a good hoop team who will be there come March, but I took The Tarheels to cover 5 and parlayed them to The Knickerbockers laying 6……….Yanks did themselves well by inking Ichiro, but as we know they need a righthanded stick…….A trade is coming

  4. austinmac December 19th, 2012 at 10:20 pm

    Pat M.,

Good bet. Texas has been pretty awful this year. Their point guard is still awaiting NCAA approval to play.

AndrewMarchand Yanks have listened on Granderson, but no known proposals yet. Makes sense to deal him with FA after this yr. But how do u replace him?

  6. jacksquat December 19th, 2012 at 10:44 pm

Ichiro is 39, but he is in great shape and very flexible, which does and should continue to lower the risk of injury. Last 3 years, 162, 161, 162 games played, and never under 146, next lowest 157. I think he could hit 15 hr playing in YS, Swisher hit 24, not a huge difference.

And he’s easy to root for, I’m happy to have him on the team.

shouldn’t they have thought about how to replace him by now?

  8. Chip December 19th, 2012 at 11:03 pm

Chad – have to disagree with you – the Yankees could have offered up Hughes and gotten Morales plus a little extra from the Angels. Hughes may not have shown the durability of Vargas but he has a lot more front end potential than Vargas does.

I would take a drop off in raw power if the Yankees can replace him with someone who a) gets on base more and b) strikes out less. If you can trade him and the guy who comes in is a 20 – 25 HR hitter instead of Granderson’s 35 – 40 I’m ok with that.

  10. Chip December 19th, 2012 at 11:11 pm

I’m still in favor of dealing Granderson for Olt and Murphy. Maybe expand that deal a bit.

The Mets just got one of the best prospects in baseball and another top prospect for a 38 year old pitcher. The Yankees should be able to get Olt and Murphy for Granderson – possibly get them to include Moreland as well.

  11. Chip December 19th, 2012 at 11:27 pm

Red Sox are interested in trading for Joel Hanrahan, because after trading for Andrew Bailey and Mark Melancon last year they still don’t have a reliable closer. Teehee.

  12. Chip December 19th, 2012 at 11:30 pm

According to HardballTalk.com the Yankees plan to bat Ichiro leadoff – presumably that’s to split up the lefties and have a lineup that looks like:

    Ichiro – RF
    Jeter – SS
    Cano – 2b
    Tex – 1b
    Youk – 3b
    Granderson – LF
    TBD – DH
    Romine – C
    Gardner – CF

  13. charlestonchew December 19th, 2012 at 11:33 pm

I wonder what Brett Gardner’s return will be like… can he be the high quality player he was before the injury? Think about the guy. He was the best defender in the league. He hit for a decent average, got on base even more. Took a lot of pitches per plate appearance. He can bunt well and is an upper-tier baserunner. He had his share of walkoff hits and even can show a little bit of power from time to time.

It must feel crazy for him to play on this team. He gets to play with some of the best players in history. Jeter & Ichiro! ARod. Mo. I mean, mannnn. That’s some kind of honor.

  14. tucker December 19th, 2012 at 11:37 pm

Ichiro may have diminishing skills, but he is still easy to watch. Like the way he gently lays down his bat just so as he runs to first after a line drive to left. He is art.

  15. Chip December 19th, 2012 at 11:56 pm

I think with a full season in Yankee Stadium Ichiro will add power much like Johnny Damon did. I think 20 – 25 HRS is not out of the question.

  19. Pat M. December 20th, 2012 at 1:46 am

Run it out…….Sure lets just trade the one young arm who is finally healthy and is reaching his potential for a power hitter with a damaged ankle that will never be what it once was…….And oh by the way, who replaces the 18-20 game winner Hughes in 2013……..Lets be very clear folks, and I’m on the record with this…….If the NY Yankees have any chance to be playing come October, their tickets will be pounched because of their rotation and pitching staff……..It’s the club’s strength, don’t tinker with it……Buy Cody Ross, improve across the board, keep your future and current quality assests……..Just because Cashman and company had a slow hot stove as far as adding new pieces, there’s no need to start to force peices that don’t fit just because it’s believed that it needs to be done………Get a RH Hitting outfielder, Nuenez righthand hitting utlility inf and fine tune from there……….Pitching is where it’s at in 2013, much like it was in 96

    Buy Cody Ross

    ******

But can you give Ross a 3/25 deal and get into a bidding war with Texas for his services – - – -

Free agent outfielder Cody Ross visited the Rangers yesterday, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports (on Twitter). Ross had dinner with team officials, including manager Ron Washington and GM Jon Daniels. Yesterday was a busy recruiting day for the Rangers, who also met with free agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski.

The Phillies, Braves, Mariners, Red Sox, Yankees, Mets and Orioles have all been linked to Ross so far this offseason. However, the Red Sox don’t appear to have room in their outfield for Ross at this point. Earlier in the offseason it was reported that the SFX client has an asking price of $25MM over three years.

I agree with Pat M. Pitching is the Yankees only real strength. Don’t mess with it. It’s counterproductive to weaken your only real strength to try and improve the offense at this point.

  24. Yankee Trader December 20th, 2012 at 7:43 am

    Good morning

Is Morales going to be the Mariners 1st baseman, making Justin Smoak available, or will he be primarily their DH, pushing Montero into the 1st string catcher role?

The Mariners were interested in Ibanez before this.

Suggested yesterday that obtaining former Yankee Justin Maxwell who hit lefties almost as well as Hairston might be a good option.

  25. The Return of Stoneburner December 20th, 2012 at 7:46 am

Mark Feinsand of The New York Daily News hears the Mariners and Rangers both prefer power over speed as they look to add offense (Twitter link). Seattle acquired Kendrys Morales on Wednesday.

I think David Murphy might be a better option than Granderson. Sure you lose the 25 homeruns – but I think Murphy can raise his HRs into the 20s with the short RF porch – and he hits for a better average – does not strike out much – it would signal a shift from swing for the fence or K. If you could then get another piece back in the deal – say Gentry, Perez, or my preference Robbie Ross – it could make potential sense. Plus Murphy would not cost as much a year from now in FA if you want to retain him and he works out. The natural problem is that Texas is looking for power and will probably settle on Swisher or revive the J Upton talks or trade for Kubel – - – -

  26. Yankee Trader December 20th, 2012 at 7:47 am

The Angels wanted an innings eater which they got in Vargas.

Cubs if they sign Jackson, might they now be listening on offers for Matt Garza?

  28. blake December 20th, 2012 at 7:49 am

Possibly – but Murphy has a nice bb/K ration – and maybe he falls more in line with Cano and a Paul O’Neill – hitters who hit in the 20s HRs with the short RF porch and did not sacrifice batting avg – I don’t think he would fit the Giambi/Teixeira power hitter mold that you mention above that has caused problems in the past – jmo – - – -

  34. Doreen December 20th, 2012 at 7:57 am

    Stoneburner,

I think Cano was more inclined to try to hit HRs last season than ever before. His BA was dangerously close to being under .300. Also, weren’t his K’s up, too? He was a guy who didn’t walk much, but people marveled that for such a free swinger he didn’t strike out much either. Maybe it was all coincidental. Other thing were going on within the “chemistry” of the Yankees’ batting order, but it’s something to think about.

  35. MTU December 20th, 2012 at 7:58 am

Agree with Pat in the sense that Pitching is our strength.

But our O is filled with age-related risk.

And still has holes that need to be filled.

The Yankees really need to rethink the way they deal with impending FA’s, and guys who they know they will not be able to re-sign.

Just letting valuable players walk for draft picks only does not seem to make much sense in a budget-minded environment.

I think we can afford to trade some pitching as part of a package to get us a quality player back.

I do not think it is a good idea to wait till 2014 to start our rebuilding effort.

Would be better to get a head start IMO.

The whole of the AL East has gotten better. If you want to stay on top
you can’t just run in place.

Keep trying to move forward by whatever means are possible.

Right now that is thru trading IMO.

    Ys Guy-

Until these lefties can learn to go the other way vs the shift, they will suffer significant drop-offs in batting average. Seeing that the Rays and Orioles use these extreme shifts more than any other teams, the Yankees might want, in the future, to bring in players[lefties] who are not pull hitters.

    For real?

Also, Cubs signing Jackson isn’t that wacky. If they have money to spend, why not? It’s not a crazy contract and the team needs to win some games throughout the season.

And I agree with you MTU. I seriously doubt the Rangers and Yankees make a deal. These are rival organizations. More so than the Sox-Yankees at this point.

  50. Yankee Trader December 20th, 2012 at 8:09 am

    86w183-

Why do you like Jason Vargas? I’d be interested in some of the lefty pitchers in the Mariners farm system-Hultzen and Paxton.

Granderson to the Mariners for one of those two, plus Smoak. Spin Smoak to the Nats for Michael Morse?

  51. blake December 20th, 2012 at 8:10 am

@Buster_ESPN: The Cubs have made strong progress on a four-year, $52 million deal with Edwin Jackson.

That actually might turn out to be decent value ….but doesn’t make much sense for the cubs to me

  52. RadioKev December 20th, 2012 at 8:10 am

Keeping an out fielder with the ability to hit 40 HR+ alone, all else aside, is worth something. The ship-out Grandy fever is silly.

I also can’t fathom how a trade for J-Up gets done unless it’s a three way deal.

We’ve seen upper level, premium prospects, get traded all offseason in larger packages for older players. Justin Upton commands more than James Shields and RA Dickey. The Yanks just don’t have the pieces to make it happen.

    ———-

No doubt, but as Chad discussed, that’s not an easy proposition. There are reports that the Yankees are fielding offers, but at the end of the day, you have to weigh what you gain versus what you lose.

Suggesting to trade Granderson for Vargas is a losing idea. That’s just an example of the fever.

At least the Yankees will have their 1st 3 hitters who won’t have to face these extreme Maddon shifts, and might stand a chance of scoring a run or two before Tex, batting from the left side pops up with runners in scoring position.

I can’t understand why Teixeira, already guaranteed big money for years, won’t embrace trying harder to go the other way and lift his average and return to the type of player the Yankees originally signed him for.

  62. MTU December 20th, 2012 at 8:19 am

    Blake/Kev-

JU is a goner. The owner wants him gone. And that owner appears to be a loose canon.

If I were JU I would expedite the process by requesting a trade.

It would be great if we could take advantage of that owner’s folly.

But in all seriousness, I agree with both of you that it is unlikely he becomes a Yankee.

But I like to dream. Upton is exactly the type of player the Yankees could use for the future. I wish there was a way.

Because IF they can get him then something like that is probably what it’d take IMO if not more…..

  67. blake December 20th, 2012 at 8:23 am

@Buster_ESPN: With Edwin Jackson just about off the board, the most prominent starting pitcher still unsigned –easily the most prominent – is Kyle Lohse.

  68. AAA December 20th, 2012 at 8:24 am

I can’t understand why Teixeira, already guaranteed big money for years, won’t embrace trying harder to go the other way and lift his average and return to the type of player the Yankees originally signed him for

    =============================

That’s not what he is. Never has been. He starts trying to be that, he probably does so at the expense of some power numbers.

  69. MTU December 20th, 2012 at 8:25 am

    Kev-

He felt the same way about Bauer. Who is very talented.

We saw how that one turned out.

So yeah. He’s gone IMO. Only questions are to whom and for what ?

Towers. You owe us. Pay up !

    ;)

  70. Yankee Trader December 20th, 2012 at 8:25 am

The Yankees have some of the chips the DBacks could use- a starter and a reliever. They are fairly well set at all their position players, and now have Chavez with Chris Johnson at 3rd.

However if a 3 team trade was feasible and Towers wanted Phelps and Robertson and possibly a prospect in the deal, are the Yankees going to be better?

  71. AAA December 20th, 2012 at 8:25 am

Would you do Granderson , Nova, Williams, and Logan for Upton?

    ===============================

Yankees would do that twice. Not sure why the D’backs would do it once though.

The Return of Stoneburner December 20th, 2012 at 8:16 am
Keeping an out fielder with the ability to hit 40 HR+ alone, all else aside, is worth something. The ship-out Grandy fever is silly.

Player A: .239 avg, 40+ HRs, nearly 200 Ks, lefty, 15 million contract

Player B: .300 avg., 15-20 HRs, 50 BBs to 70ish Ks., 6’4? lefty, 5-6 million contact after arb., about two years younger than player A, plays LF – – -

It is not as silly as some make it out to be – – – -
    ——–

Who is Player B, why is this team trading him to us, why are you not listing Grandy’s walks, and why does his height matter?

    ******

    1) Player B is a composite of Paul O’Neill – with when you compare him to David Murphy’s 2012 season you can begin to see similarities – including height – O’Neill and Murphy are both lefty and 6’4″

    2) David Murphy is a FA a year from now. Rangers are looking for:

Mark Feinsand of The New York Daily News hears the Mariners and Rangers both prefer power over speed as they look to add offense (Twitter link).
    Read more at http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/#FVpmBlA5D3zg5GBU.99

Sounds a lot like Granderson with the power.

    3) it is not fair to Granderson to compare his 75 bbs to 195 strikeouts – it is a bad ratio

*****caveat – now before you counter with – it is unrealistic for the Rangers to deal with the Yankees – please note that that is based on opinion and speculation at this point – we do NOT know for certain – it may be true – but to suggest that it is silly to try to entertain and trade Granderson is not accurate – that much is true at this point – - – -

  73. MTU December 20th, 2012 at 8:27 am

    Blake-

Yes. But I’d try to substitue Heathcott for Williams.

I’d pretty much give Towers a list of guys available and let him pick the ones that interest him.

We have few untouchables. Or at least we should IMO.

  74. The Return of Stoneburner December 20th, 2012 at 8:28 am

    Would you do Granderson

    ****

I am not sure Arizona is in the business for more OFers – they have Pollock and Eaton and Parra before you get to Kubel and Upton – - – -

  75. The Return of Stoneburner December 20th, 2012 at 8:28 am

But I’d try to substitue Heathcott

    *****

    injury concerns I presume – - – -

  76. The Return of Stoneburner December 20th, 2012 at 8:31 am

Ahhh breakfast – well maybe we get a trade before the weekend – more likely in January – - – -

  77. MTU December 20th, 2012 at 8:32 am

    SB-

    Correctamundo.

But he put on a show in the AFL and his value is high right now.

Upside is definitely there but so is the risk.

    Kid has a high cieling.

But we have 3 others. One who is probably as good and who might actually stay on the field a bit more.

    JMO.

  78. MTU December 20th, 2012 at 8:33 am

    SB-

Xmas sock with a lump of coal but a belated present in January still possible. Maybe even likely.

    I agree.

  79. Yankee Trader December 20th, 2012 at 8:36 am

    AAA-

These are Teixeira’s splits in 2008, before the Yankees signed him-.311 from the left side, now .239.

    http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/.....k-teixeira

I suppose you can say he’s always been a pull hitter and in 2008 no-one was using the shift, but if he’s your clean-up hitter, hitting .230 with RISP or .125 with RISP and 2 outs[2012], means he’s more likely to kill a rally.

  80. MTU December 20th, 2012 at 8:46 am

What do the Twins need ?

Would they trade Willingham to us for a reasonable cost ?

Put Willingham in rt. Move GGBG to center. Ichiro to left.

Trade Grandy to the M’s, or Phils for ?

Yeah. I know. dreamin’ again. Twins aren’t moving Willingham.

  81. blake December 20th, 2012 at 8:48 am

“Yankees would do that twice. Not sure why the D’backs would do it once though.”

It might take more as I said….but you do get a year of Granderson who was an MVP candidate in 2011, a cost controlled starter….a high upside outfielder that Towers helped draft….and a quality LH reliever….that’s a lot for 3 years of an upside guy your unhappy with.

  82. Shame Spencer December 20th, 2012 at 8:49 am

    @JonHeymanCBS

phillies gm amaro on top free agent OFs: “we feel like the demands are north of where we want to be.” eying trades too

    LOL..we’re not alone!

  83. blake December 20th, 2012 at 8:50 am

Tex’s LH swing win allow him to do anything other than what he does….he’s have to rework his entire swing to change his approach and at 32 that’s just not realistic.

As AAA said….changing could actually take away what he can do ….which is hit homers….

Tex needs to focus on playing D….mashing from the right side (where his swing is more balanced) and just hitting homers from the left side

  84. Yankee Trader December 20th, 2012 at 8:50 am

    MTU-

The Twins already traded away 2/3rds of their OF. Might as well trade two years of Willingham at undermarket value of 7M/year. :)

Pitching and more pitching to the Twins for Josh.

  85. MTU December 20th, 2012 at 8:53 am

    OK YT.

    Make it happen.

    Then trade Grandy for ?

  86. blake December 20th, 2012 at 8:55 am

Upton gets expensive soon….he makes 15 million each of his last two seasons……when you combine that with the fact that he has yet to fully reach his potenwtial I think that’s keeping the offers down for him.

Towers has been trying for the Hershel Walker package for 2 years now and he hasn’t gotten it…..at some point he may just have to take what he can get for him or keep him….

  87. AAA December 20th, 2012 at 8:55 am

    YT:

I hear you. Just sayin’ he’s never been a guy who uses the entire field and he has minimal power to the opposite field. I don’t have the answers, but do know that some guys out there are enjoying considerable success in the face of the same shift.

  88. Yankee Trader December 20th, 2012 at 8:56 am

Tex needs to focus on playing D….mashing from the right side (where his swing is more balanced) and just hitting homers from the left side.
    ———————————-

Then I don’t want to hear any of the usual complaining when he comes up to bat with RISP next season and “Oh gosh rolls over on that one and GIDP, or crap he hits another weak pop-up. :)

  89. MTU December 20th, 2012 at 8:57 am

    Blake-

    ” keep him”

Don’t think that’s likely. Hard to cross back over the Rubicon.

    High probability he gets moved.

If I were him I’d demand a trade.

  90. blake December 20th, 2012 at 8:59 am

Teams are hesitant to give up big chunks of their farms for a guy that has yet to become a star and also who is going to get expensive soon…..that 4 player offer I posted may not be enough….but it’s a pretty good value of players….

  91. blake December 20th, 2012 at 9:00 am

“Then I don’t want to hear any of the usual complaining when he comes up to bat with RISP next season and “Oh gosh rolls over on that one and GIDP, or crap he hits another weak pop-up. ”

I’ve accepted what he is….Yankee fans need to as well….he’s never going to be able to hit a line drive over the SSs head from the left side….his swing mechanics make that nearly impossible for him to do

  92. MTU December 20th, 2012 at 9:01 am

    Blake-

And I bet Giancarlo would like to get the heck out of Miami too.

He’s already made that pretty plain.

    ;)

  93. MTU December 20th, 2012 at 9:01 am

    New thread —->

  94. Cashmoney December 20th, 2012 at 9:02 am

you are essentially getting a 230-240 avg with 760ish OPS from the left side in Tex. I think that is maintainable for the duration of his remaining contract years but with possibility of tread downward. He is dangerously close to becoming a platoon player if wasn’t for his contract and his D. I sit his butt 2/3 of time if we had an young and viable option.

  95. Yankee Trader December 20th, 2012 at 9:04 am

Blake- We’ll see if the LoHudder’s accept Tex for what he is next season.

MTU-Trade with the Twins on next thread.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  209. Home Remedies For Candida Yeast Infection Symptoms September 1st, 2014 at 8:26 am

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

  223. countertops September 2nd, 2014 at 4:00 am

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

You decide what keywords / search terms that you want your blog to be associated with and then you do a search using those terms to see where your blog shows up in the search engines.. . If you don’t like where your blog is ranking in the search engines then basically what you have to do is “out-optimize” those sites that are appearing above yours (in other words – your competition!). . Now there are all sorts of legitimate and not-so-legitimate ways to do this since ranking high in the search engines is what everyone wants. Basically speaking there is going to be a lot of work involved if your site is ranking low and you want it to rank higher – basically involving “tweaking” both your site and its’ contents!. . I realize that this may seem just like “general” advice but let’s face it – to get more specific advice your site (and the search terms that you want your site to be associated with) has to be analyzed for more specific advice!

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
