Ross lands in Arizona; Ibanez generating outside interest
The top right-handed outfielder is now off the market.
Cody Ross has signed a three-year deal with the Diamondbacks, and it’s reportedly worth $26 million with an option for a fourth year. With that contract, the Yankees were clearly never in the market. They’ll still go hunting for a right-handed bat, but Ross was too high of a commodity.
As for a left-handed bat, the Yankees have acknowledged discussions with Raul Ibanez, and today the New York Post reports that the Mariners have “serious interest” in Raul Ibanez. It was previously reported that Ibanez wants to choose a team fairly soon, and he came up through the Seattle system. Could be a fit if he’s interested in going back.
The Yankees have plenty of left-handed outfielders as it is, but the current market is so thin that Ibanez still looks like one of the better DH options out there.

Since the Dbacks have signed Cody Ross, maybe the Yanks could trade Grandy for Upton?
The Red Sox are moving closer to a trade for Joel Hanrahan, reports ESPN Boston’s Gordon Edes. One source cautioned there is “still work to be done,” however. It’s unclear what the Pirates would get in return for their closer.

Don’t leave Raul!
so i hop in the car to run over quickly and pick up some salsa ranchero for my huevos rancheros and wfan is on the car radio and it’s some kid talking about the blue jays. but ed coleman keeps asking him questions….turns out it was alex anthopolous, who really sounds like a teenager.
it was pretty interesting, jmills will like it im sure if he’s around:

@JonHeymanCBS: There is no kubel trade yet for AZ. But ross agreement gives them options. Sure teams will try to run again at upton
Trade for Morse
Hanrahan will help the Sox pen
The options for RH bats are dwindling. Hairston appears to have enough demand and will require at least a two-year deal.
Demon Young is coming off a mediocre year and is still pretty young. Would he accept a one-year deal in order to rebuild his value?
The guy crushes lefty pitching and loves hitting at the stadium. He is a liability in the field, but would he be any worse than Raul Ibanez was last year?
As the clock ticks and more teams sign FA outfielders, Delmon Young’s opportunities narrow. He may be forced to take a one-year deal …. A drawback for the Yanks may be the inability to give him enough at bats to re-establish his value. He will want to be a primary DH and/or starting LF for a club.
Is it me or does Boston seem to collect marginal relief pitchers?
And I thought Raul came up through KC and was later delt to Seattle?
delmon young in ny is a no-go. the yankees are not going to insult a major portion of their fanbase and bring in a loose cannon to fill a backup roll.
In your opinion, does Gardner have a future with the Yanks after he hits FA?
@JonHeymanCBS: There is no kubel trade yet for AZ. But ross agreement gives them options. Sure teams will try to run again at upton
@Buster_ESPN: Arizona is, in fact, working to trade an outfielder, in the aftermath of the Ross deal. Kubel is regarded as the most likely guy to be dealt
hanahan will help the pen. but the red sox are still two to three starters away from being a competitive team.
stoneburner,
gardner is valuable because he’s cheap. but if he starts hitting .300 that’s an entirely different story. lot’s of teams want him for his defense and speed. his trade value is high right now
via mlb 2012 prospect watch:
Scouts swarmed to Connecticut to see first-rounders George Springer and Matt Barnes in 2011, and in the process they got a nice long look at UConn’s shortstop. The more they saw Ahmed, the more they liked him. He’s the kind of player whose tools might not jump out right away, but the way he plays the game grows on you the more you see him. An athletic middle infielder, he can make all the plays at shortstop with a very strong arm. It remains to be seen how much he’ll hit, but he handles the bat well, has shown he can steal some bases and does anything to help his team win.
via BA:
Best Defensive Infielder for Braves: Nick Ahmed
2 more seasons before they have to worry about gardner’s free agency. plenty of time for that to be determined.

No….not sure he will be a Yankee even that long
Had the Yanks been able to replace Granderspn in the lineup….,Amhed was one of the players I had been saying they should target from the braves

I guess what I am saying is – in your opinion – do you see him as having a future past the 2014 season with the Yanks when he hits free agency? Also – does his potential making 4 millionish going into the 2014 season via arbitration factor into anything??

Then does it make sense to think about trading him this offseason?
Gardner is valuable now ….because he’s cheap and because he can still fly…..the minute he loses a step and starts getting more expensive his value nose dives…..considering he’s 30 already next year may be his peak value both to the team and in the trade market
I’m not sure one incident is going to color the Perception of young. An apology, alcohol counseling and a few HRs. He’s good to go.
It’s a bit simplistic to say Jewish NY fans will not accept Young based on that drunken skirmish. In fact, several Jewish fans have been on this board and have said as much.
“Then does it make sense to think about trading him this offseason?”
Depends on what you’re getting for him and how you can replace him in the lineup…..it makes sense to shop him IMO yes and see what teams will offer
@Ken_Rosenthal: #RedSox indeed close to acquiring Hanrahan from #Pirates. FIrst reported by @gordonedes.

But what if he were to make 4-5 million in arbitration going into 2014 (probably more like 4 million) – does that change anything? That’s just 1 million less than all these right handed OFers we are turning down now. Is Gardner going to be worth it for 4 million going into 2014?

I don’t know if Id do that deal for Gardner…..if they added another good outfielder first then I might because AMhed “could ” solve SS and Delgado has more upside than Nova IMO…..so I might ….but Id need to see how they could replace Garnder for 2013 first
It’ll probably be noodle bat Iglesias to the pirates

I guess – a lot of this depends on speculation at this point – but IF Heathcott excels in AA (that is where is starting according to Newman’s remarks to Chad) – I think a year from now we could be saying wow i wish we could have dealt Gardner for two years of control rather than having him one year from FA taking up some coin on the 2014 roster heading on the wrong side of 30 and teams may not want to pony up that much with just one year left til FA – but in my scenario a lot depends on (1) how Heathcott does in 2013 and (2) who you replace Gardner with in 2013 – - – -

Don’t leave Raul!
—————————–
Why not – he hit some memorable home runs, but was otherwise not very good. His ca. 1.4 WAR is a good indicator that he was not a major contributor. He was added to the roster in place of Maxwell out of ST and that was likely a mistake…
“Would you feel more comfortable if you could flip Nova for the Gardner replacement – – – -”
Depends on who it is…..
Would I do this deal:?
Yanks get: Morse , Delgado, Ahmed
Nats get: Nova
Braves get : Gardner
maybe…..
“And I thought Raul came up through KC and was later delt to Seattle?”
~
Raul was drafted by the Mariners in 92 and was there till 2000 then signed as a free agent with the Royals then signed back with the M’s in 2003 before his Phillies and Yanks contracts.

Now in your scenario – are you putting Morse in RF or DH? I have not watched Morse really play – but I seem to remember that some posters on here said his defense is subpar. In RF I guess you could hide him in YS.
I also think more may need to go to the Nats – not significantly more – but if they are looking to move Espinosa in a separate deal down the road to another team – Joseph or Adams could be appealing – but I just think more than Nova would have to go – - – jmo – - – -

Are ready for possibly welcoming Raul the proverbial son Ibanez home?
I know Nova showed uneven results. He grows mid-90s and hitters square up his pitches, which suggests a lack of deception. But I like his work ethic and his competiveness even more so. Yes, those are intangibles, but I like the kid. Still think he has a chance to improve. I’d rather they keep Nova and instead shop Hughes (just one year left on his contract and likely too expensive to retain.)
“Now in your scenario – are you putting Morse in RF or DH? I have not watched Morse really play – but I seem to remember that some posters on here said his defense is subpar. In RF I guess you could hide him in YS.”
Probably in RF where he is bad….but to me the offensive upgrade might be worth it considering you’re also getting a good SS prospect…..obviously Id love to add another outfielder too and make morse te DH
Give Travis hafner a make-good deal and invite to ST. I have a feeling he is due for a big comeback.
I like this idea of Ahmed from the Braves – I know Blake came up with the idea first.
Delgado as a middle starter – the way I see it – Yanks have money for a big ticket no. 2 in their 2014 rotation – whether it be via FA in Hughes, Garza, Wainwright (according to mlb trade rumors), Lincencum or trade – if they are going to resign Cano. But they would need to go for pre-arb starters in slots 3-5 – could it be Delgado, Phelps, and Marshall?? Do the Yankees go affordable with slots 3-5 and make that transition just as they have quietly done with their bullpen in recent years – and upload the bulk of their starters money with slots 1 and 2?
Ahmed could gain time in AAA in 2014 by then – I believe he was in A ball in 2012 but had a good showing in AFL – possibly take over for Jeter after the 2014 season – - – -
Throws mid 90s , not grows mid 90a
Probably in RF where he is bad….but to me the offensive upgrade might be worth it considering you’re also getting a good SS prospect…..obviously Id love to add another outfielder too and make morse te DH

What is your opinion of Gerardo Parra?
Don’t trade Gardner
Gardner is going to put it all together this year. In this case I think a year older and wiser is going to help GGBG.
He’s going to exploit that 5.5 hole. He’s going to be more aggressive on the base paths. He’s going to perfect the art of bunting. He will take over the leadoff position.
IF he stays healthy Gardner will hit over .300.
That’s my bold prediction for the day.
“What is your opinion of Gerardo Parra?”
Meh….
“IF he stays healthy Gardner will hit over .300.”
I don’t know about that…. But I think he could get on base over 35% of the time and if he does that he’s probably a 4+ WAR player
Would you go Ahmed and this guy http://www.baseball-reference......rdos001jos ?
If the Yanks trade Granderson or Gardner then they need to target SS or 3B prospects unless the deal is for a big league player to replace them…..

@DKnobler: Red Sox definitely moving towards deal for Hanrahan. Iglesias will not be in deal.
Some have wondered if the Rangers could be players for Kubel if they can’t come to terms on a long-rumored deal for Upton. Kubel is set to earn $7.5MM in 2013 with a mutual option for the same amount in 2014, significantly less than the $38.5MM owed to Upton through ’15.

He’s got the eye with bat control and just enough bat speed to be a “Gwynn light”. I’ve seen little snippets of it from him, but never has he put it all together for any extended length of time. And I don’t use the Gwynn reference lightly, I spent a lot of time in SD during Tony’s heyday and watched him a lot. Gardner can replicate that approach with good results. (disclaimer Of course i’m not saying that GGBG is TG, just that he can use that same model to become more successful).

i agree i think this is going to be gardner’s bust-out year! Don’t be shocked if he leaves camp as the leadoff hitter and CF.
2013 break-in possibles at some point during the season: Romine, Montgomery, Adams, Marshall, Whitley, Mustelier
2014 break-in possibles at some point during the season: Heathcott, Flores, Turley
@joe_sheehan: Dear #Yankees: Jason Kubel is better than Raul Ibanez, and may well be available. 602-462-6500. Ask for KT.

I do like Kubel…..but I think if he’s available (they have to sign Laraoche first) and the prices are similar then Morse fits a lot better to me….LHP is gonna kill this lineup as it is unless Tex and Youk really bounce back
Mr. Morse must make more sense.
Morse could DH vs all pitchers and if you wanted to play him in RF against some lefties and DH Jeter or Nunez then you could……he really would even things out
Jeff Baker (ATL).
Yankees looking at him ?
Why?
Based on 2006 season in MiLB ?
Pathetic option.
Gardner is the first to go. Nova second and we could package Nunez and the pack of overhyped prospects for Kubel or Upton. Make it happen even if you have to relinquish Hughes …….
