Yankees announce Canzler claim; no corresponding 40-man move yet

Here’s the announcement from the Yankees.

The New York Yankees today announced they have claimed infielder/outfielder Russ Canzler off waivers from the Cleveland Indians.

Canzler, 26, appeared in 26 games for the Indians as a September call-up in 2012, hitting .269 (25-for-93) with three home runs and 11RBI. He made 24 starts with the Indians (11 in the outfield, seven at first base and six as the designated hitter), hitting safely in 15 of the contests.

A right-handed hitter from Hazleton, Penn., Canzler began the year with Triple-A Columbus of the International League, batting .265 (129-for-487) with 36 doubles, 22 home runs and 79RBI in 130 games. He led the International League in doubles while also pacing the team in home runs and RBI.

Originally selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 30th round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft, Canzler also saw Major League action in three games with Tampa Bay in 2011 (.333, 1-for-3, 1RBI, 1SF, 1BB, 1K). Throughout his professional career, he has appeared in games at first base, third base, left field, right field and designated hitter.

The Yankees will make a corresponding move to make room on the 40-man roster.

But what about Canzler’s favorite color Yankees PR statement – you did not tell me about his favorite color – b/c you told me everything else about the guy – geeesh – - – -

    i agree with daveD.

while the jays are loaded, it may not work out, see the 2012 angels and marlins.

the o’s played way over their heads (much to their credit) but have gotten worse.

the bosox don’t scare me they have no pitching.

and the jays definitely took a step back.

what can a package of Gardner & Cervelli bring back ? Not much you say, then thats what they are worth …not much but as of now they are starters for the NYY

  6. Nick in SF January 4th, 2013 at 4:36 pm

BTW, welcome back, Rich. I hope this go-around brings you less of whatever it is that made you want to leave.

i think gardner’s going to have a great season, especially if they move granderson.

  8. Jerzz January 4th, 2013 at 4:44 pm

The minor league team is gonna be so much more fun to watch than the major league team

I mean we replaced Swisher/Ibanez with some guy off waivers

  9. Rich in NJ January 4th, 2013 at 4:45 pm

Thanks, Nick. There’s some truth there that extends beyond online posting, but I won’t go there. ;)

What can a package of A-rod or Mark Teixeira bring in a trade? Probably not much. That doesn’t mean either is worthless. It means that they are simply more valuable on the yankees than in a trade market.

“As I said, he began lose me after his short-lived move to start Hughes, Joba, and IPK in 2008, and then said nevermind when it didn’t work after a month.”

he lost me when he replaced this guy because he wanted to have josh phelps/ mientkiewicz as a two headed first baseman:

    vs LHP as RHB 71 150 133 43 9 0 7 26 1 0 14 11 .323 .387 .549 .936 73 4 1 0 2 2 0 .308 142 136

think the yankees could use a right handed hitter with .936 OPS against lefties.

bernie williams could still hit when cashman threw him under the bus.

for josh phelps ? mientkiewicz ?

cashman being exposed early for who he was.

posada, jeter, and rivera took notice and did not let cashman ever get them in the position cashman had bernie in.

that is they negotiated hard so they always had that extra year so cashman could not just cut them loose the way he did with bernie.

cashman probably paid twenty million extra dollars to these players because of how he treated bernie.

but he did get josh phelps in the line up.

    cashman is stealth.

oh , and sarcasm is like when cashman’s wife said ” you want your freedom, you got it. enjoy it”. :)

    Okay, so 5 more years.

What does Henry Ford’s quote have to do with our entertaining Yankees?
    ———–

It’s just 4, I misspoke. He’s an FA after the completion of the 2016 season.

Rich – I agree with everything you said in the last thread regarding Cash.. I still think he was under the impression he’d be able to buy a player or two if he needed it, and just got c*ck blocked by the FO.

  16. Shame Spencer January 4th, 2013 at 4:52 pm

    @YankeeSource

Yankees are interested in Tanaka but it’s all about posting bids. Interested doesn’t mean going crazy and bidding off charts when he posts.

  17. randy l. January 4th, 2013 at 4:54 pm

what’s up with the yankees investing so much time in developing montero, romine, and cervelli and then not using them.

do all these players just not take in the excellent yankee catching instruction? also why does it take the yankees so long to throw in the towel against catchers they invest so much time in developing ?

if they can’t cut it why not make changes early instead of wasting so much time in developing these players?

  18. Cashmoney January 4th, 2013 at 4:54 pm

The sooner Cashman is gone, the happier I will be.

Did he honestly believe you could start 3 rookies at the same time in NY of all places and everything would go smoothly.

  20. Shame Spencer January 4th, 2013 at 4:55 pm

Oh and Henry Ford has nothing to do with anything. Just felt like posting it cause it showed up on my feed lol.

Did not know Ford was an anti-Semite.. learn something new every day on here.

gardner is very important to the yankees going forward. hes under control through 2015. who else is going to play CF that is cheap and they won’t have to give up prospects for?

i don’t get why anyone wants gardner gone in these circumstances.

a few ppl probably told Cashman that facking a psycho is not a good idea but eh, the intrepid cashman did anywhere, I do applaud his spirit.

I would be interested to see what Gardner could bring back from Atlanta – - – -not saying I would trade Gardner – - – -

RE: Cashma, how do you guage the importance of the man in charge when he has had huge amounts of money at his disposal?

In order; his selection of what personnel will work with him.
Prior to 2005 season end Cashman was essentially an intern for George who told him what to do on a daily basis.
Cashman protested, the org. relented a made him the man in chargeHis record to date is checkered to be sure.
But,he did not sign Arod to the absurd 13 year deal and has made 1 significant trade for Swisher.

However during his tenure as numero uno his suspect minor leagus org. has failed in the draft both domestic and international, leading to today’s dilemma of having no real prospects ready for the show.

While in the past George pitted the Tampa cabal against NY,his influence has been gone for some time, yet Cashman has essentially the same crew headed by Mark Newman and Damon Oppenheimer.

At the end of the day one can summarize his reign as GM thusly, without the Yankee dollar they do not win in 2009,they have a middle of the pack farm system with only presumed prospects and a further bloated payroll. Not a very distinguished resume’. Oh, and with ownership looking to sell his departure is near!

Based on Cashman’s comments about Romine likely opening the season in the minors the Yankees have to make a move for a catcher. They cannot go with Stewart and Cervelli; it would be better to have the pitcher hit. I don’t like him that much, but Rod Barajas is a veteran with some power in his bat who can be signed to a low salary deal and be replaced when Romine is ready to participate. Chris Snyder is another option to look at though he’s got a history of back issues.

There’s always the possibility of a trade, I think Kurt Suzuki could make some sense.

  29. Jerkface January 4th, 2013 at 5:00 pm

gardner is very important to the yankees going forward. hes under control through 2015

Technically not through 2015. He will be a free agent in the offseason preceding 2015.

  30. Ys Guy January 4th, 2013 at 5:00 pm

its not accurate or fair to cervelli to say he couldn’t beat out stewart. they needed depth at C after montero was gone and they got stewart. (which considering romine’s back injury turned out to be a good pickup.)

to keep stewart he had to be on the active roster but cervelli had options. cervelli also needed to work on his defense.

so organizationally the move made sense, but it never indicated that stewart was a better catcher.

im no cervelli fan, im just trying to be fair to the guy.

hey Kev, hope you had a good holiday and along with everyone else. later all.

    ——————-

A little while ago I was trying to get Morse and Suzuki in the same deal… but I dunno.. I really like saying: “That’s Cervelli.” – Cervelli

Is there enough room for two Suzukis on this team?

jf, we had this same discussion yesterday about robertson.

this is direct from garder’s BP page:”Service Time (01/2013): 4.072, Arb Eligible: 2014, Free Agent: 2015″

same as for robertson who you said would be gone the year after next.

am i reading this wrong? to me that means he’s an FA after the 2015 season.

  35. Nick in SF January 4th, 2013 at 5:06 pm

Shame, Cots has CC through 2016 with a vesting option for 2017:

“2017 salary guaranteed if Sabathia 1) does not end 2016 on the disabled list with a left shoulder injury, 2) does not spend more than 45 days in 2016 on the disabled list with a left shoulder injury or 3) does not make more than six relief appearances in 2016 because of a left shoulder injury”

Just four more years would be his original 7-year contract starting in 2009 and not counting the extension. My original question about CC was in response to what you said about Cano being the only $20MM player on the team in 3-4 years. CC will be there too (or not too if Cano is gone).
